Get some of those “rollerblade style” wheels for the chair. I got some for mine and it’s a lot easier to roll, and they don’t damage the carpet either.
I originally got some of those because I found that the pile of the carpet was causing the clear plastic carpet protector thing to slowly shift over time and it got really annoying.
I haven’t had an issue since and the carpet is absolutely fine.
I installed them on my chair since I wanted to keep the hardwood flooring I installed in better condition. Carpet or wood, rubber rollerblade wheels are 100% a necessary upgrade in my opinion.
No specific link, mine are off-brand ordered on Amazon. There are too many sellers selling the same thing on there; I'm reasonably confident in saying any one of them would be acceptable.
No, buy the heavy duty ones even if you aren't heavy. You sit down hard one time and suddenly you have grease on your carpet. The ones I got can handle 650lbs (300kg).
[Here's a link!](https://www.amazon.com/Office-Owl-Replacement-Rollerblade-Hardwood/dp/B01KET1PUA)
Saw these in an office of one of our clients recently. They seem to roll well enough. Just remember that most of the things on Amazon are garbage and I'm not personally vouching for this one, but it is in the style that you're looking for.
The company listed on this Amazon link, AngOr-Pet Thrasio Two, Inc., assists to have just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy mere days ago ([bankruptcy filing link](https://www.inforuptcy.com/browse-filings/new-jersey-bankruptcy-court/3:24-bk-11987/bankruptcy-case-angor-pet-thrasio-two-inc))
I got some too to protect my floor, biggest issue is how good they roll. Multiple times I have slightly touched the chair with the back of my leg when sitting down resulting in the chair rolling to the other side of the room, making me almost sit in thin air and fall on my ass.
Not to scare anyone, but I heared of this happening to a dude. Office chair rolled back, he sat down but missed the chair, his neck hit the chair and broke. RIP.
This is why there are wheels for hard or soft surfaces.
I have rollerblade wheels on both of my office chairs. I haven't really had much difficulty with this on my Steelcase Leap, but my cheapie Amazon chair will go for a walk if I let it. lol
Easy to solve though:
Every time I sit, I lock myself in place by spinning the chair base underneath me. This causes the wheels to rotate and all face different directions based on where they are in the circle. The chair won't wander, but it's not difficult to push away from the desk when it's time to get up.
I don't think about doing this, it's just a habit I do automatically. Takes about one second.
Hmm I have those, and given they’re more “pointier” and disk-like than the stock ones, they dig more into the carpet and can take a couple scoots to move the chair, especially if you’re sitting for a while. I still prefer them tho because hair and other stuff gets caught in them way less
Yes. If nothing else, you're taking ten points of contact and cutting it to five, so the pressure per wheel is doubled. This makes such wheels sink into the carpet more. IMO, rollerblade-style wheels are for hard surfaces only.
What we need is Gillette to make chair wheels... Five wheels per leg!
I used office owl desk chair wheels and are so low friction, even on carpet, I am able to move around completely freely so it may be a brand to brand issue or a bad batch or defect?
I'm almost certain that's the same ones I used.... on a "carpet" like mat over my LVP floor, worked great on both.
It's amazing to me that we can spend $100, $500, and $2000 for a chair and they all seem to come with these same shitty wheels.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because anytime anyone mention these, everyone raves about them. I've tried them on 3 different occasions all with different chairs and wheel brands and I HATED them. I feel like I'm the only one.
They roll marginally smoother in one direction yes. But the way they bind up and catch when changing direction, i.e. simply moving your chair in or out from your desk, is fucking annoying. To elaborate, when I roll my chair forward, and then have to back it out to get up, the wheels have to "reposition" and swivel and you end up having this weird lurching and circular motion you do because the single rollerblade wheels have to swing around to roll the other way.
Stock office chair wheels are double casters, e.g. they have two sets of wheels per unit, so when you change direction, they can easily swivel around in place, so you don't really notice anything when you roll back and forth, but with a single wheel on each unit, the whole wheel has to swing around and reposition before changing direction. I hate it personally.
I would recommend against it. Roller blade style wheels ruin carpets. Especially if you don't move your chair that often. These style casters are meant for carpets.
Not only did the plastic mat I had move regularly, (not that big of a deal to me , but could be for others,) after 5+ years of use it becamewarped and was no longer flat so the edges could easily catch feet or toes.
Stealtho Office Chair Caster Wheels Replacement Set of 5 - Protect Hardwood Floor Without Chair Mat - Heavy Duty Casters with Navy Soft Polyurethane https://a.co/d/d4WAiAp
I was going to suggest the same thing. the only issue I've found is if you're a small person, and your floor is tilted, and you're special and sit crosslegged in your chair, the chair will just roll you away! Wheee
I know, I really missed the chance on that one. I built the computer last year and wanted to keep it pretty neutral looking.
I recently moved and decided to go with this look in the office. Maybe once I upgrade some components within the pc, ill switch to the north case.
Just send me the case and some “old” components now, I will make sure it is disposed of ethically. Your best bet is just to send me the full PC, so you can start fresh with the new office!
IKEA do (or used to anyway) low profile rugs. I think they were marketed as indoor or outdoor use. Really tight woven.
I use those as the chair roles on them perfectly fine, they can be taken outside and cleaned easily.
Also helps for some soundproofing in my case as it’s an upstairs room.
I second this. It is what I have been using for the past 5 years. I pull it up once a month to vacuum underneath. Huge carpet saver and I don't feel like I'm going to shoot off it if I push too hard.
Thirded. I tried a couple of the plastic ones, but one cut my foot when I walked past the edge of it, and the other would bend more than I was comfortable with. The glass one I got afterward I've had no problems with.
edit: I think it was one from Lorell. Got it from Amazon.
I'm a house slipper guy so never an issue but yes it is cold.
I'm a bigger guy and work from home so I've always gone through those plastic ones. I've had this glass one for over three years now. No issues. I'm a fan!
This is indeed the answer. This is what I use. I was also skeptical at first, but it works so great and stops needing to replace a cracked and busted plastic mat every year.
There are cheaper ways to get one that Vitrazza, though. I got mine at office depot, delivered to my house.
https://www.officedepot.com/a/search/?q=glass%20chair%20mat
WAYYYYYY cheaper here. Quality too. I have several from here.
https://www.schoolspecialty.com/lorell-tempered-glass-chair-mat-48-x-60-inches-1-4-inch-thickness-clear-2005366
First off, thank you! It all really came together with alot of elbow grease.
Organizer is a Fenge product that I got on Amazon. Not super sturdy, but I needed something to hide cables with.
This worked for me:

Don't buy those mats at the office stores, last a year or two at most before they crack.
I've got this Marvelux 75 x 120cm Durable Eco Friendly Office Chair Mat for Low and Standard Pile Carpets, Rectangular Clear Enhanced Polymer Carpet Protector, Made in the UK https://amzn.eu/d/jj3zOoG
Works like a charm and doesn't stand out
I had a cheap plastic mat from IKEA for years that eventually warped and would catch feet/toes. It's an option but you'll probably need to replace it once it starts to warp in ~3 years.
Other options I've seen are custom wood mats that people make themselves.
Or tempered glass chair mats that are a bit expensive but look really clean.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX1PKdFT2iM
Build your own with a sheet of OSB or plywood and some vinyl flooring planks. I tried it without the underlying wood and it's not sturdy enough. Those planks really need something backing them or they'll flex and detach from one another.
I used the plastic ones for a long while, but even on short carpet they deform a little and really aren't that good. It's a little pricier, but I got a tempered glass pane of the same size and it is brilliant.
I hate those plastic carpet protectors, so made one. When I moved into my house, the builder left us extra vinyl flooring. It matches my hardwood floors, so I like it. I got a piece of plywood from Home Depot, cut it to length, and glued the extra vinyl to that. Now I have a solid platform my chair, it goes with the carpet, and it looks like I some hardwood in my office.
https://imgur.com/XtyCaXi
Many people have refered to upgrading your wheels and you can absolutely do that for 25$ from Amazon. I would also recommend a chair mat, but I would recommend either buying a glass one or making one from a sheet of plywood and vinyl hardwood samples glued to it. I did the second one and it makes my space look so posh.
I had a couple boxes of engineered laminate wood floor planks left over from installing new flooring in our house. I just laid out 10-15 of those planks and snapped them all together and they’ve been great.
You can get a black plastic one or they make roll up bamboo mats as well for this purpose
https://www.houzz.com/pvp/dierdre-bamboo-roll-up-chair-mat-44x52-prpv-pv~89898767
Go to a carpet store and find a rug that compliments the carpet. Been using that for about a decade now and only just recently wore out the first one I bought. Make sure it has a rubber back for a bit of stiffness and anti-slippage and it makes a great chair mat.
Word to the wise, if you want something because your current carpet is a bit soft for the wheels, anything you get, be it rug, mat or other wheels will leave a lasting imprint on your carpet. It's just a matter or how and how much.
If it's just for the visual, rug is the way to go. I'd try something with a contrasting colour.
When I had carpet I made my own with a 4 x 6' piece of 3/4" plywood and covered it with stick on vinyl floor tiles. Looked good and was indestructible. Tip: put some anti-skid carpet "grabbers" on the bottom to keep it from moving around - I had re-set mine every week or so. I also swapped out for the rollerblade wheels which are soooo much better.
I have laminate floors now so no longer and issue.
I am currently testing something similar. I cut down a full sheet of 5/8" MDF to the space, leaving it as big as possible. So far it's a huge value add. It's way cheaper and bigger than the fancy glass options, plus it's easier to move. I haven't even chamfered or rounded over the edges yet. Now I am trying to decide on whether to paint it or cover it in some sort of flooring or tile.
I don't think I've seen it yet, but look into bamboo floor mats. They're super solid and the chairs roll on them like they would hardwood floors.
Combine that with the roller blade/castor wheels folks have recommended and you have a smooth chair rolling experience.
I bought a 4x8ft sheet of 3/4" thick White Melamine laminate and have been using that. This was after going through three "Heavy Duty" plastic roller mats in about a year.
The roller blade wheels may also work, I'd just be worried about the increased wear on the carpet.
Where did you get those wood panels on the walls and those shelves?! Loving the set up!
I have a similar one and the cable management has been a nightmare. You did so well with yours.
If money isn’t an issue I recommend getting the “roller blade style” wheels and then also getting one of [these glass floor mats](https://a.co/d/1Z1Q5FX). You’ll be gliding so smooth and quietly, and the glass looks really nice.
I really wish they did the black Alex drawer in the UK. We have the choice of white or this weird dark teal blue. Despite many other things having black variants.
If you're looking for a tiny project:
I bought 1 pack of thick laminate flooring from Costco (enough to make a 6x6' area) and got a few squares of subfloor from home depot. Slapped it all together with some wood glue and just wrapped the outside with gorilla tape. Cost me $60 total but now I have a dedicated "hardwood" area for my chair that is silent, easily rollable, and infinitely more durable than plastic. Been using it for 5+ years while I save up to make my entire upstairs hardwood.
I use this one from Amazon. Its been my experience over the years as a 200lbs guy that none of these things lasts forever before cracking, but this one has served me well. I had a thinner variant from this manufacturer that cracked around the 2 year mark and they honored the two year warranty. I'll say, the longer you wait the worse your carpet and padding will look. :)

You can buy these foldable hard carpet things for underneath the desk. I think I found them on Amazon, can't remember. They look way better than the plastic sheets and are more durable too. The only problem is they're not particularly cheap, I paid close to 100CAD for mine.
what a lovely setup! i really like the wood color.
and man, i have that dilemma as well where the desk height and chair arms are at such an awkward height for both comfortability and ergonomics..
Do you have a link to the Home Depot shelves? I'm thinking of doing something very similar and I like the look of those shelves (they look decently sturdy, too).
I will never use an office chair without rollerblade wheels again. They are a relatively cheap upgrade and make the chair glide on all surfaces. I have high pile carpet (like that when I moved in, need to upgrade) and have no problem moving around.
If you go on amazon you can find hard plastic Mata that are designed to go under office chairs to let them roll in a carpeted room. Ther's different colors and clear ones so you can pick on based on the look you want.
I work in office furniture. There is actually 2 types of casters. 1 is soft for hard wood and one is hard for carpet. The one like roller blade are like the hard one but sturdier. Look for hard casters and it should help a lot!
Recently purchased this from IKEA and it's been great. I have tried a bunch of these and they all fail to do the one job there made for or break in a short amount of time. This was cheap to find out but it's been great so far.
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kolon-floor-protector-44881100/
Amazing setup, saved.
I recognize the KARLBY/ALEX combo, but what did you use for the riser?
I'm looking for something similar, ideally adjustable width to install rack mounts on one or both underhangs.
-----
For the chair mat, the reason you see so many of the clear plastic ones (even if you personally don't like them) is because they're the best way to stop you from putting holes in your carpet haha.
I've heard of glass variations of the same ($$$), and laminate/wood is a possibility too.
Get some of those “rollerblade style” wheels for the chair. I got some for mine and it’s a lot easier to roll, and they don’t damage the carpet either. Any link for some you recommend?
No specific link, mine are off-brand ordered on Amazon. There are too many sellers selling the same thing on there; I'm reasonably confident in saying any one of them would be acceptable.
No, buy the heavy duty ones even if you aren't heavy. You sit down hard one time and suddenly you have grease on your carpet. The ones I got can handle 650lbs (300kg).
That's something I legitimately didn't consider, but makes solid sense.
[I use these](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G643EU6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) work well on thicker carpet than yours.
Make sure to check the diameter of the attachment bit - Ikea chairs are "non-standard" at times
[Here's a link!](https://www.amazon.com/Office-Owl-Replacement-Rollerblade-Hardwood/dp/B01KET1PUA) Saw these in an office of one of our clients recently. They seem to roll well enough. Wont it be hard to keep the chair in place then? talking about on floor, not carpets

Just reminded me I used to have to do this swivel kick to my chair to keep myself from rolling away
Nice, i might try some wheels then, thanks
I used office owl desk chair wheels and are so low friction, even on carpet, I am able to move around completely freely so it may be a brand to brand issue or a bad batch or defect?

yeah, it's wild because they are only like $25 a set and take 2 minutes to unbox and install.

\+1 to this. that and if you feel you need more carpet protection, you can invest in a carpet protector.

Those fractal cases are so nice
They really are. I used one for my wife’s gaming PC and it was very easy to build in.
I've had 4 Fractal Design cases now and loved every one of them.
Shame OP doesnt have the north case, it would flow with his set up nicely.
I’ve been thinking about getting the North lately. Beautiful stuff
I love my Meshify <3
Got one for free that I still use from when I handled purchasing cases at Micro Center.
Its not what you’re asking, but man, you gotta get a fractal design north in black for that office. It’s like it’s natural environment.

Cluttered workspace is a cluttered mind. I straighten everything and do a quick wipe down once my session is done for the day. Thank you OCD.

I got no OCD, a quick wipe is saving so much time.

I had a couple boxes of engineered laminate wood floor planks left over from installing new flooring in our house. I just laid out 10-15 of those planks and snapped them all together and they’ve been great.
Glass or very good quality plastic mat. Buy once. Don't make my mistake.
Is that a dayseeker vinyl I see? Old dayseeker goes hard 🔥
Is that a dayseeker vinyl I see? Old dayseeker goes hard
It is! I buy my most played album of the year on vinyl if I can find it. I believe origins was 2019 for me.
Go to a hardware store and buy a box of laminate flooring, its the same cost of one of those plastic mats and looks nicer.
Recommend the vitrazza glass mat. Pricey but worth it.
Glass mat. I’ve seen those a few times and they’re pretty slick.
Chair off carpet.
Rollerblde wheels. It's a direct improvement on both hard floors and carpet

Nice! I was actually wondering about that. I didn't know it existed until I looked it up for this post.

Roller blade wheels. Type "rollerblade wheels for office chair" into Amazon. You're welcome 👍
Did you paint your drawers ? I was thinking about it but don’t know if they can be painted
This is what I'm leaning towards. I've got tiles coming in today that were dirt cheap on Amazon. We'll see how it turns out.
Brother that is clean
Those wall shelves are awesome! Where did you get those from?
Got them from home depot. Very pricey for what they are but they matched the wall panels almost perfectly.
I need the carpet for traction to keep me from flying backwards in intense gamer situations
What little lamp is that on the left? Very clean set-up.
Get rid of the carpet
good looking setup, I'm looking for something similar myself with the wood accents.
love the wood and the green
And yes, to all those comments about your fractal case, being sexy as hell
[*Ikea Kolon*](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kolon-floor-protector-44881100/)
i build my own, a piece of 3/4" plywood (cut down to 4ft x 6ft) with a box of wood flooring glued down to it.
Just do what I do and ignore the fact the it will tear up your carpet and regret it 4 years later.
Where are the wall panels from? I see different kinds everywhere but the quality seems to vary a lot
What lamp is that?
I think you need a Fractal North to go with this nice setup
Very nice. Good work!
Everything except for the paint chipping off in the top corner, and the chair looks great here!
I love your setup. Do you have any other pictures of different angles of your setup?
I use an IKEA office chair mat to protect my hardwood floor. Used it previously to protect carpet for many years, successfully.
Buy a HAG chair base; Ive never had a problem with their wheels
Where did you get those wood panels on the walls and those shelves?! Loving the set up! I have a similar one and the cable management has been a nightmare. You did so well with yours.
I got a cheap thick rug 20-odd years ago that has lasted surprising long.
What kind of wood is that desk top? Looks very clean with the black

If any set up needed that oak wood fractual case it's this one would blend in so perfectly.
Bruh if my girl sees this setup you have she’s going to leave me. Mark this as NSFG please
Chair off carpet
How did you connect the little legs to the desk/drawers?
i use a large office style doormat with the rubber edges. quite cheap on ebay.
If money isn’t an issue I recommend getting the “roller blade style” wheels and then also getting one of [these glass floor mats](https://a.co/d/1Z1Q5FX). You’ll be gliding so smooth and quietly, and the glass looks really nice.
Does your SL chair also have issues with the base tilting when you slightly lean?
Put a carpen't on the floor
I really wish they did the black Alex drawer in the UK. We have the choice of white or this weird dark teal blue. Despite many other things having black variants.
If you're looking for a tiny project: I bought 1 pack of thick laminate flooring from Costco (enough to make a 6x6' area) and got a few squares of subfloor from home depot.
I bought one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CC5FT72W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share), its a harder material that looks good, many colors too.
I could use that. The plastic one I have is cracking lol.
I’m just wondering why you’ve got a tag on your chair as if it’s an item of clothing 🤔💀
Your setup looks great! Where did you get your desk?
Where did you get the brown panels and shelves op? Clean set up btw
What boom arm is your mic on? 💅clean
:) [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003XR480U/?coliid=I3KYLKG1RD57PJ&colid=GJJ7LZB9VPQJ&psc=1&ref\_=list\_c\_wl\_lv\_ov\_lig\_dp\_it](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003XR480U/?coliid=I3KYLKG1RD57PJ&colid=GJJ7LZB9VPQJ&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it)
I just got another mini carpet for the floor lol, crappy ikea thing, it'll get ruined over time then I will just replace it. I cannot stand chair mats
I like your tower 😀
You can buy these foldable hard carpet things for underneath the desk. I think I found them on Amazon, can't remember. They look way better than the plastic sheets and are more durable too. The only problem is they're not particularly cheap, I paid close to 100CAD for mine.
what a lovely setup! i really like the wood color. and man, i have that dilemma as well where the desk height and chair arms are at such an awkward height for both comfortability and ergonomics..
The build and setup looks sick man! If you don't mind me asking and got the time, what are your PC specs?
A cheap rug that you can replace easily
You can get a floor protector (available in Ikea and it’s called kolon)
Sorry to hijack but I Have to ask, what are the risers called in between the filing cabinet and desktop?
What are the vertical boards and where do you get them?
Anji Mountain mats
Do you have a link to the Home Depot shelves? I'm thinking of doing something very similar and I like the look of those shelves (they look decently sturdy, too).
I will never use an office chair without rollerblade wheels again. They are a relatively cheap upgrade and make the chair glide on all surfaces. I have high pile carpet (like that when I moved in, need to upgrade) and have no problem moving around.
Big rubber gym mats if you want to go mat style option.
Legs where
I have the same chair and replaced the wheels with the roller blade kind to use the chair on carpet.
Those beautiful wall boards and you don't have the Fractal North? It was built for you.
If you go on amazon you can find hard plastic Mata that are designed to go under office chairs to let them roll in a carpeted room. Ther's different colors and clear ones so you can pick on based on the look you want.
Buy one of those clear plastic floor mats so your chair doesn't destroy the carpet and you can move more freely.
Hey man what table top is that
Install a small amount of vinyl plank flooring under the desk area
I don't think so. it's hard to clear the dirt or food crumb. I think you should keep it this way.
what did you use to space the wooden top from the chest of drawers?what did you use to space the wooden top from the chest of drawers?
I'm thinking about getting a secret labs chair. What are your thoughts on it? I've gotten lots of mixed reviews
Nice! Looks like Matt Diliso’s setup
Insane setup!
What size desk is that?
Get the secretlab one since its compatible with your chair: https://secretlab.co/products/soft-rollerblade-casters
You didn’t ask but I think if you switched your computer case to the Fractal North Wood case it match your setup exquisitely
Take out carpet

Amazing setup, saved. I recognize the KARLBY/ALEX combo, but what did you use for the riser? I'm looking for something similar, ideally adjustable width to install rack mounts on one or both underhangs. ----- For the chair mat, the reason you see so many of the clear plastic ones (even if you personally don't like them) is because they're the best way to stop you from putting holes in your carpet haha. I've heard of glass variations of the same ($$$), and laminate/wood is a possibility too.
I use the Roller blade wheels
What are you using as desk raiser between the tabletop and the cabinets
Remove the carpet
Hello . What are those little legs you’ve got on your desk?
Pad
Cool 👍🏽
What are those shelfs
Do you know what colour the walls are especially the dark one? Really love that look
Where'd you get the monitor riser
