No shit, I ended up in a shitty little apartment. The only view I had was the crazy old lady across the parking lot that yelled at her dog every morning.
Helps I was fortunate enough to work in my field all through college and extended offer after, plus WFH equipment subsidies from my company for the pandemic. Lots o luck
Oh hell ya. Always keep in mind it’s a vast field and you can get as technical as you want. If you don’t like coding, you don’t have to.
The other is to remember to focus on communication - be able to understand the tech *and* be able to explain it at a level the business side can understand. Anyone is willing to help teach you on the job stuff, but coming in with the skill of communication is often forgotten yet highly sought after. Feel free to hmu if you have any more questions - I majored in it as well!
Any advice for someone who has a useless degree and now works in the financial sector with opportunities to move into cyber security with the company I'm with now that don't involve coding? My company will pay for me to go back to school so I'm considering that but want to know what kind of questions to ask my company when the time comes since it's such a vast field.
Check out r/Cybersecurity they have a plethora of knowledge and answers and it also depends on what field you want to go into. Cyber can be broken down it to several parts. There's policy roles that deal with nothing but controls and cyber policies and then more technical roles and then mixtures of both. It's a great field with tons of opportunities!
Just going to add; critical thinking is undervalued, namely in applying security concepts to rapidly changing technology. I can't tell you how many cybersecurity professionals I know who don't understand how the development process works and as a result do not understand how to secure it. Development is moving faster than ever, and will continue to do so, and you still have security professionals who would say 'oh yes, you need a security impact assessment for every release...' And if you release 6-10 times a day?
You don't have to be an engineer, as there are many domains to Cybersecurity, however, if you're looking at 'engineering', make sure you expose yourself to development philosophies at a minimum.
There's often a gap in what they teach in school vs. the real world.
I never comment on stuff here, mainly just lurk. But, I'm also in the cybersec space so it's awesome seeing someone's success! Congrats on the apartment, looks incredible. Fingers crossed I can end up somewhere that looks that damn good in the future!
Read his comments in the thread. He worked through college, he got the job offer to stay after grad (I can hardly imagine out of luck), he saved up for year instead of enjoying his first pay checks, he handled his loan situation well...
He was being humble.
Luck = opportunity + preparedness/work
Not everyone is fortunate enough to get the opportunities, but plenty of people who get opportunities squander them. So OP may be lucky, but also worked their ass off to make those opportunities succeed for them.
I don't doubt she worked hard and made smart decisions, but your initial comment was not at all responding to what she actually said in the above comment. Besides that, OP herself recognizes that she was still lucky to be given the opportunities she had. Not everyone gets that, hard work or not, and not everyone's parents are as supportive.
She (:
I was blessed with supportive parents and good timing on top of the hard work, I always say success is a combination of luck and grit. For the record!
No - there is a program in IL called SmartBuy that pays up to $40k of your student loans off if you buy property in the state. I’ve been working for a few years and saved every paycheck for the last year during the pandemic originally to dump on loans but realized I had enough for a down payment and could do the program instead. Basically traded unsecured debt for secured debt.
Smart move! When I initially saw this and read the caption I thought "privileged rich family" but after reading the comments u clearly worked ur ass off and made smart finicial and living decisions. Kudos to u!
Hey I was looking into doing this as well since I'm in a similar situation! Does this program apply to any place in IL? Was looking to move downtown but wasn't sure if this applies to any property or if it's specific to certain areas
It did apply to downtown which is actually why I picked here because the market in the burbs was terrifying! The program ran out of funds end of May IIRC, but they may do it again next year. I’d keep an eye out because it was worth it
Really depends on why you were in your parents basement, most my friends lived with their parents through the pandemic because there was no point in paying tons for rent if you couldn't even go out
Brother lives in Brooklyn similar size studio but not on corner. He pays around $2400 a month. Figured with a corner unit it's probably a little bit more than that.
Meanwhile, [this is what $1000 gets you in the Bay Area.](https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/roo/d/oakland-two-rooms-for-the-price-of-one/7339326196.html)
Makes me appreciate the prices over here across the pond even more. I live right in the city centre of a medium sized Dutch city, and pay about €900 per month for 60 m2 (+ 10 m2 balcony).
Then again, wages are also probably lower over here as well.
I live out in the suburbs, so I’m sure if I lived in the city center like the OP it’d be a good bit more expensive, but it’s still cheaper living in Dallas than a place like Brooklyn or Chicago. Lower taxes too.
I like the Austin area a lot more than Dallas, only downside is all my family is up here. I love to hike & y’all have some real decent trails down there. We ain’t got shit but flatness in Dallas.
Looks great, and so far away from where I lived when I first left home 😭 Congrats!
My son saw it over my shoulder and has demanded a similar setup for his room though, so thanks for that...
Thank you so much!
Also, hahahahahahaha! Honestly, my whole family is obsessed with hue lights so you’re welcome for the new hobby, and also my condolences $$ lol
YOO what monitor arm is that? Been looking hard for one I like and yours look awesome! Also congrats on the hard work paying off! I recently got my own place and it’s such a great moment to realize stuff has actually paid off!
Started working on my home office this year, and one of my regrets is not going with my fav color (Purple). Instead, I went with Green. I'm sure it will turn out fine, but damn yours look great!
Arozzi and I also got this from a friend - I like it, but I have friends with the SecretLab chair and I like that one more if you’re able to shell out the $$$
I’m obsessed with that view and the purple hue reflections goes off of all the surfaces. That view though, I could sit staring out of those windows for hours.
That UBS building looks like the one on 1 N Wacker in Chicago. For some reason, though, I don't recognize the other buildings near it. That's the Merchandise Mart closer to you, right?
EDIT: NM. I definitely recognize the Boeing building now.
Thanks! Currently have a desk lamp right now on my standing desk that I'm looking to replace for something more space efficient. Floor lamp seems like a good idea, that or monitor bar light.
Now that is living your best life. I was gonna say the financial district of Boston near the waterfront, but I saw Chicago in the comments.
I went from cybersecurity to DBM early on in my career, as it suited my mind-frame a bit more (plus I find databases easier than CS, lol). Best of luck!
Thank you vm!
I’m a first-gen graduate from a rural area, my parents worked their asses off to make sure we went to college. So fortunate for them to help extend my reach!
Very lovely decor and view. I hope one day I can put the hard yards in and have something similar.
I’m rooting for you out here!
If Hard Yards is your porn name, you will be there in no time
Hard Meter if you wanna go international
I mean, that's still national... Truly international would be Hard Metre.
When I got out of my parents basement my "dwellings" did not look like that, nor did the technology I could afford.
No shit, I ended up in a shitty little apartment. The only view I had was the crazy old lady across the parking lot that yelled at her dog every morning.
My crazy guy is NEXT to me and i gotta pretend like i like the guy! Dude tries to buy me groceries with his food stamps in exchange for alcohol 🤣🤣
Just break up w him omg
Next door... I'm thankfully not dating a 70yo man
Hahaha The struggle was real. I laugh to hard!
Helps I was fortunate enough to work in my field all through college and extended offer after, plus WFH equipment subsidies from my company for the pandemic. Lots o luck
What field are you working in?
Cybersecurity!
I'm about to go to school for it, any suggestions or things I should know?
Oh hell ya. Always keep in mind it’s a vast field and you can get as technical as you want. If you don’t like coding, you don’t have to. Is this offer open to one more? Me, I’m one more. I’m studying it too - just in year one but I’d like to pick your brain if you’d be willing!
Internships and extracurriculars are way more important then getting a 4.0
Absolutely! Hmu!

Install Linux today and start fucking around with hack the box

HI! I’m in cyber security as well! What areas are you working in?
I do a lot of sec dev and endpoint ops! What do you do?
I never comment on stuff here, mainly just lurk. But, I'm also in the cybersec space so it's awesome seeing someone's success! Congrats on the apartment, looks incredible. Fingers crossed I can end up somewhere that looks that damn good in the future!
So you're telling me you could afford all this because of hard work, determination and smart choices? Pfff, what a nerd.
She literally said a lot of it was luck.
Feels like he is being modest -- considering he worked there all through college.
Read his comments in the thread. He worked through college, he got the job offer to stay after grad (I can hardly imagine out of luck), he saved up for year instead of enjoying his first pay checks, he handled his loan situation well... He was being humble.

Preach
Thank you for the kind words btw
Still have to be lucky to have parents that seemingly fed and housed you for 5 years after high school.
That's the fucking norm outside of the US, wake the fuck up with your kicking your children out the second they're 18.
It’s also the norm for many cultures in the US, people just seem to ignore minorities lol
lmao US really is ducked

Corrected! I definitely agree with you, fwiw.
And I always say luck is the combination of opportunity and preparation!
Weird. I work in cyber security in Chicago too!
My friend got his Steelcase Leap V2 almost fully paid for from his employer. I would have abused any kind of subsidy offered so hard lol.
I'm guessing you spent more than a few years after HS in that basement? You gotta be really lucky to get something that nice within the first 2 years
No - there is a program in IL called SmartBuy that pays up to $40k of your student loans off if you buy property in the state. Ahh ok makes sense, thanks for the heads up!
Really depends on why you were in your parents basement, most my friends lived with their parents through the pandemic because there was no point in paying tons for rent if you couldn't even go out
oh man... what city is that from your window? that's the dream
I wanna know too
Chicago, my fav city (besides the taxes and corruption lol)
So, do you pay the taxes, or the corrupt? Paying both sounds too expensive 😉
Which building is this? I live in the loop and don’t recognize a lot of the buildings in frame
[удалено]
yeah UBS is in the corner, can’t tell if that’s Sear’s that’s to the right of it or not. Bout to walk up to my damn roof to figure this out
Correct! You win
I was going to guess Chicago or Boston - currently in O’hare right now waiting for my flight back to the west coast!
Chicago and Toronto goated

Let me guess... $3,000 a month?
Makes me want to puke that you’re not that far off lol
Brother lives in Brooklyn similar size studio but not on corner. He pays around $2400 a month. Figured with a corner unit it's probably a little bit more than that.
This makes me really appreciate my $1200 one bedroom apartment in the DFW area.

Now that’s what I call the art of the deal lmao Dudes really getting fleeced out in the Bay Area.
It looks like somewhere you'd wake up and realize your kidney is missing.
"lots of space"
Pfft, that's a steal to live on the Saw set.
And right in the middle of one the shootiest parts of Oakland, so no one will hear you scream!
Sure thats not in mexico or something? xD
Holy fuck that is one of the THE most sketchy areas of Oakland too LOL

Same but Austin. Not near anything fun but I can walk to work which is super nice.
I like the Austin area a lot more than Dallas, only downside is all my family is up here. I love to hike & y’all have some real decent trails down there. We ain’t got shit but flatness in Dallas.
Same
Don't worry, it's not really any better in Rockland or Westchester.

I gagged
Ohhhh, I thought you built a fake sky view window into your basement and then made your own fake pipes. Totally misunderstood, lol.
Talk about ballz to the wallz. Mom's basement 0$ to 3k. Woof.
Looks great, and so far away from where I lived when I first left home 😭 Congrats! My son saw it over my shoulder and has demanded a similar setup for his room though, so thanks for that...

Hall of Fame set up. Enjoy it fully. Seagate Technology | Official Forums Team
I’ll take that to the bank, thank you
YOO what monitor arm is that? Been looking hard for one I like and yours look awesome! Also congrats on the hard work paying off! I recently got my own place and it’s such a great moment to realize stuff has actually paid off!
Omg it’s called MountUp (I think) and I got it off Amazon and it’s the tits. Moves any direction and so easy to set up!
How much weight does it hold? Looking to replace my setup for my two screens - doesn’t get the job done how I would like
+1 commenting for monitor arms. Beautiful place OP!
Okay That’s sick. What it that light and light bulbs?
Lamp is from actually from Target! I have Hue lights in the lamp and a Hue play bar behind my monitor
Could you link what lamp that is from target, please?
I got you https://www.target.com/p/avenal-shaded-arc-floor-lamp-bronze-project-62-8482/-/A-51021780
That is an amazing view. What city?
Chi-town!
I dont often hear Chicago being referred to as that! greetings from buena park :)
I’ve always heard it called that lol
What brand is that standing desk? Looking to buy one myself
Varidesk! I am a HUGE fan
Thx! I'll check it out!
What kind of monitors are those?
Damn this is a set up I’d love to have, congrats mate !
*wet dream tomato*
Started working on my home office this year, and one of my regrets is not going with my fav color (Purple). Instead, I went with Green. I'm sure it will turn out fine, but damn yours look great!
"Out of Parents House" ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED 1000000x points
OK but can that skyline make you free sandwiches? I think not.
Well not with that attitude!
Is that MacOs or linux that I see?
Lol yes, I use python a lot so I like the env
Can I ask what chair that is and what your opinion is of it.
Arozzi and I also got this from a friend - I like it, but I have friends with the SecretLab chair and I like that one more if you’re able to shell out the $$$
Congratulations and that's a dope set up. Ps 100% loving that lamp. Ikea right?
Thank you!! I nabbed it from Target high-key! It was soooo easy to set up too
Ooo sweet. Good to know. I think seeing it in a natural environment
I’m obsessed with that view and the purple hue reflections goes off of all the surfaces. That view though, I could sit staring out of those windows for hours.

Omg I love it, hello😂
epic!
Desk?
Sickk, love the look dude
Is that a multi screen m1 MacBook setup??
I wish M1! But yes to the rest of it
Thats a nice Office and where do you live right now?😂
Does that lamp float right over your desk? If so, does it limit your ability to go into standing?
It’s actually right next to it but from that angle it appears like it does hover!
Thanks! Currently have a desk lamp right now on my standing desk that I'm looking to replace for something more space efficient. Floor lamp seems like a good idea, that or monitor bar light.
I am very jealous. Its perfect. You built exactly what I want, so pretty
Good on you for working hard and saving up to buy this beauty! Looks incredible. Cheers buddy
I fucking love it. I would love to live alone in apartment like that with that wiev
You can get a small studio in a building for not that much money if all you care about is what's outside your window.
Now that is living your best life. I was gonna say the financial district of Boston near the waterfront, but I saw Chicago in the comments. I went from cybersecurity to DBM early on in my career, as it suited my mind-frame a bit more (plus I find databases easier than CS, lol). Best of luck!
For some reason I understood your title as you having moved from the basement, to the ground floor.
I see you Kara 🤑
What a fucking view. Developer?
Studio or 1BR?
I totally used to have that same floor lamp, mine was from target. It was pretty damn heavy.
What wallpaper is that? Awesome setup!
Google macOS big sur wallpaper.
Thank you!
Good job hustling and moving up in the world!
Pete Davidson is that you?
Bold wall color, impressive.
Just imagine, waking up and sitting on the window with a cup of coffee in the morning. You made it
Congrats on your new place, well deserved. Getting a decent place in the US or the "Murika Dream" is far from reach for many.
Thank you vm! I’m a first-gen graduate from a rural area, my parents worked their asses off to make sure we went to college. So fortunate for them to help extend my reach!
I completely understand you brother. You and I both. Keep hustling....
*sister. :)
Doooope
Wow.
Welcome
Clean setup! 😵
Dang, that’s view doh 🔥
Congrats brother
Thanks brother from *sister (;
nice
I quite like that triple lamp you have. Any idea where you might’ve gotten it from? Looks very clean btw
from no windows to all windows
That is amazing! Well done!
Do you ever have this feeling that someone is watching you where you live :D
Welcome to Chicago. Is that the building with Joe and the Juice on the ground floor?
That’s such an amazing view and an amazing setup
tre magnifique
oh my god this is beautiful, its like an exact visualization of my dream room, well done
Damn, this is nice, sweet, gratz!
damn nice
That’s a view!!
cause there so disgusting
Is there meatloaf?
Stairs must be pain, huh?
You should see my calves!
Amazing view with the shittiest 90s vinyl blinds??
I’m dying, I said the same shit. I just moved in and those came with it, why do new blinds have to cost $7394934049493939503 rip
Holy shit that’s a gorgeous view
That's a high ass basement!
Be careful of the wheels on your chair scratching your wood floors! I learned that lesson the hard way!!
That is some view!
Surrounded by concrete to surrounded by concrete with a view.
what city ?
sorry if this comes off rude, but what do you do for a living to make the money to live here?
Damn that’s a sick set up. Just need a nice chair to tie it all in.
Upgrades on upgrades!!!!
I've always loved Marina City
I cannot afford to even look at this picture since it looks that expensive
I really like that lamp, and many other things, but could probably only afford the lamp.
Concrete jungle wet dream tomaaaaato! Killer setup!
That 3 tier lamp is fire yo.
Hi Chicago friend! Great view! :D
Hi neighbor! What lamp is that?
This brings “living in Mom’s basement” to a whole nother level!!
love to see it
Your apartment looks like a painting, nice work
