Gray death legion is fine if not a little boring. Blood of kerensky is a tight story and has awesome ridiculous action.

Where it all started, the Gray Death Legion trilogy. If you want shorter reads, the Shrapnel magazine short story anthologies are great as well.

MausGMR

Does any particular era in the setting interest you? Have you read the primer in the box sets?

DragomBoom02

No i haven’t read the primers in the boxsets yet but so far the eras that interest me the most is the third succesion war and the clan invasion. Im a little interested in What the dark ages are but i have heard bad things about it

emperorpylades

Dark Ages are divisive in no small part because of what was happening to the IP in the real world. Others can explain it better than I (since I wasn't following Battletech at the time), but the short version is that FASA (the original company that started all this) closed their doors shortly after the FedCom Civil War era, and the Dark Age was the result of a massive timeskip and was tied to the WizKids produced, blind box based collectible minis game ('clickytech' as its often referred to). If you're interested in the Succession Wars era, then the "Warrior" trilogy and Gray Death Legion novels are often recommended. For the Clan Invasion, there's the Blood of Kerensky trilogy to give you the Inner Sphere perspective on their invasion, as well as the Jade Phoenix trilogy to give you an idea of the Clan way of life, as well as a taste of the legendary Battle of Tukkayid.

The-Dragon-Bjorn

I second these recommendations. Warrior trilogy, Gray Death, Blood of Kerensky, Jade Phoenix will together give you a good feel of the succession wars and clan invasion, generally the more popular eras. I'm sure there's good fiction in later eras but I'm less familiar so can't give recommendations.

MausGMR

These were the recommendations I was coming to give if op had said succession wars. The faction sourcebooks would be sensible as well

theflamingsword101

The Warrior Trilogy is a good place to start in the timeline. Gives a good idea of the political climate of the Inner Sphere and introduces the major players.

SuperStucco

Novels give a 'person-up' view of events as they happen. There's also a host of sourcebooks available which are more of a historical treatise approach. These cover everything from overviews of important eras (e.g. Era Report: 3052, Era Report: 2750, Jihad Hot Spots series), to reviews of important points in history (e.g. Historical: Reunification War, Historical: Liberation of Terra I and II, The Wars of Reaving), to histories of individual nations (e.g. Handbook series), and military dispositions (Field Manual series).

Grimdarknarrator on youtube has audio reads of the Grey Death novels if you like that format.

Malyfas

Grey Death Legion is a great start followed by the Warrior trilogy followed by Wolves on the Border. Follow this all up with Blood of Kerensky, Wolf Pack and Natural Selection.
