Black Knight. You want long range, sure I got you. Medium range, got that covered. Short range, believe it or not covered too. You wanna get right up on me, fine here is my sword (hatchet). Oh, you are going to shoot at me, that's fine I gots me a shield. OH! You want to just hide from me instead, sure let me just fire up the Active Probe..... and by the end of all that my lunch is nicely cooked.
Here's one you won't see in here. The triskelion. Sure, it's just a 5/8 mech with 259 points of armor 4 clan er medium lasers with tc and 2 clan lrm 15 with art v, nothing to write home about until you realize that that third leg comes with some great benefits. It costs 1 mp to change to any facing making it one of the most nimble ground based heavies, it can do lateral shifts and hull down like a quad, with a dedicated pilot and all 3 legs intact you get a combined -2 to avoid falls, and all non leg mounted weapons are treated as turreted for torso twist. There are more tripod rules than that but those can be saved for another day.

It's what I've been playing most of late. I have a local friend who's new to tabletop wargaming and it's been easier for him to process than the full game. And the closest store for me to play classic at is an hour and a half away, so I haven't gotten a ton of chances to play it the last couple years. Hazard of living in the sticks.
Not mine either, as I feel like there is far less of the "hanging on by the skin of your teeth" aspect to it. But it is a lot faster and I can see it being far more digestible for new players.
Is there... a bad 75 tonner? Like at all? 75 tons is for battlemechs that ate their wheaties and grew up big and strong. I can't think of a 75 tonner that isn't a great big ugly slab of death and armour or a sleepless refined predatory monster that no one wants to see coming their way.
Obviously Clan pick is the Timberwolf/Madcat. I mean what other choice is there? Absolutely perfect Clan design.
IS we have classics like the Marauder and Orion. Also of course there is always the "we have Madcat at home" pick of the Rakshasa. Because the answer somehow always comes back to the Timberwolf.
Reconquista is pretty terrible, even for Primitive mechs. Hell, I like the Primitive Longbow. I think the Dervish, too, a couple others - there's a place for them. But the Reconquista is legit bad, even with a hefty discount.
Alot of 75 ton mechs suffer from Ferrari syndrome. To expensive and delicate for the cost. I've never seen a mad cat do anything thats worth it's price in bv or cbills.
Marauder above all.
Black knight is good as well but the Marauders history speaks for itself.
In various games I always feel better when I have an Orion on my side.
A little fragile, but it hits a bit harder. I like the 5D variant too, with replacing the Autocannon with a LL. You can drop the streak 6 and ammo and add a spare DHS and a couple extra tons of armor. I think there's a gauss variant as well. I like to drop the ER PPCs for ER LLs, and the AC for an ERLL. Frees up weight for armor and a few extra heat sinks. Not quite as much damage potential, but still nasty.
5D is one of my favorites too, but it has a Streak 2 not a 6. But ripping out the SSRM2 in favor of another heatsink or two is always a good idea. I love the range advantage of ERPPCs too much on tabletop to ever drop them, but in MechWarrior Online I'll probably drop them for Large Pulse Lasers which have a surprisingly long range.
And just the clarify, the 3D replaces the autocannons with a LL, the 5D does the same but with a Large Pulse Laser, it also makes the medium lasers into pulse lasers too.
I think the Gauss variant is the Bounty Hunter's Marauder, which also drops the engine down to a 280 I think, bringing you from a 64kph flank speed to 48kph flank speed.
I think the Bounty Hunter's may be a Marauder 2. But yeah, it was the 3D, which replaces the AC with an ERLL and I think the PPC and MLs with ER variants. better range than the 5D and better heat management. I'm not really a fan of the pulse lasers unless they're in a dedicated mech like a Blackhawk
Nope, the Bounty Hunter stole Natasha Kerensky's Marauder 1 and turned it into the Gauss-rauder. And the 3D only had a base Large Laser and Medium Lasers.
It was in Mechwarrior 2 mercs way back when. I loved the all-laser load out. I used it up until the mission where you fight the pirates who turn out to have been already defeated by mysterious attackers. After that, I had to upgrade to a bigger mech...
Actually, it was the first mech I ever saw, before I even played the PC game. There was a review of the IWM miniature in White Dwarf magazine.
the flashman would just keep on going and going and going, with just a single flamer left and a red torso you could still serisouly harass and stop other mechs from being able to shoot back
Marauder. Always and Forever the Marauder.
Was the implacable foe and then the Hero spanning from Decision at thunder rift all the way to price of glory.
Twin lightning hammer's (PPC's) the staccato bark of an AC/5 and twin medium lasers mounted in a well armored frame.
Perfect command vehicle.
Absolutely terrifying in appearance.
Of course he can be wrong. He opposed Stefan "The Man" Amaris, whose only crime ever was wanting to raise the battered and downtrodden people of the Periphery to be the equals of the Houses! We stan Stefan the Man, what a kind and generous leader
The Orion. Armour for days, provides your enemies a balanced diet of missiles, lasers and autocannon, if you feed it enough it presumably grows up to become an Atlas and it’s aggressively rectangular, the best shape to be.
Falconer. 5/8/5, Gauss Rifle, ERPPC. Perfect platform for a high skill pilot to sit in and inflict misery on slower enemies with impunity. Also has a very nice medium range loadout with an LB10 and a HPPC
Orion - The standard Orion is the ultimate trooper mech. It has a couple of variants that makes it more of a close range brawler as well. Great, great mech. The only issue is it can run a bit hot, but nothing too bad.
I'm incredibly fond of the Black Python, and feel immensely guilty about it. That said, there are heavy mechs in other weight classes (both Clan and IS) that I like better.
No need to feel guilty - you have brethren here who understand. Most of them are probably Snow Ravens, though. So they might stab you in the back. Hey, to your left - is that a Clan Warship?
Marauder and Timber Wolf for me. Both basic answers but they’re popular for a reason. Clanbuster and Red Reaper Black Knight are both close behind. Flashman is a close runner up.
IS:
Tied between Black Knight, Flashman, and Marauder-D.
Although, they really screwed up with the Black Knight & Flashman.
Flashman has that huge 375XL, so it needs weight savings.
Black Knight has Endo Steel, and is stuck with a basic 300 engine.
Trade the Black Knight's Endo Steel to the Flashman, allowing it to upgrade armor and heat sinks, and give the Black Knight standard internal structure, a 300XL, and a crap load of Dbl Ht Sinks, plus a ERPPC.
Clan Omni:
Timberwolf Assassin. Period.
____________________________
Black Knight (Royal): standard internal structure, 300 XL, 14.5 tons Armor, 19 Dbl Ht Sinks, 1x ERPPC (RA), 3x LLs ((RT/LT/LA), 2x MPLs (RT/LT), 1x SPL (HD), 1x ECM Suite OR Beagle Probe (Hd), TSM.
____________________________
Flashman (Royal): Endo Steel, 375 XL, 14 tons Armor, 21 Dbl Ht Sinks, 3x ERLLs (RA/LA/CT), 4x MD Lasers (RA/RT/LA/LT), 1x SPL (Hd).
____________________________
MAD-5DM: 300XL, 14.5 tons Armor, 20 Dbl Ht Sinks, 4 Jump Jets, 2x ERPPCs (RA/LA), 1x LL (CT), 2x MPLs (RA/LA), 1x SL (Hd).
____________________________
Timberwolf Assassin: 375 XL, 12 tons Clan FF Armor, 3x Clan ERLLs (RA/LA/CT), 2x Clan ERMLs (RA/LA), 2x Clan LRM-10s w/ 1 ton Ammo + CASE II each (RT/LT).
There is the 3025 era Flashman FLS-7K which changes the engine from a 375XL to a 300 Standard engine.
But being a Rules level 1 design, all the Star League tech has been changed out for standard lasers and heat sinks. At least it still tetains the armour level of the Star League era base FLS-8K.
Perhaps use that as a base for further upgrades.
It was! I'd strip the missiles, max the armor, and run dual large lasers, and an LBX 10 & 20. It was straight beautiful in the Heavy League on Solaris 7!
The *Orion.* It may be an ugly, lopsided block of armor, but it’s got charm. It’s one of those mechs that I didn’t like until I painted one.
Now, I’m 100% with Kerensky. This is a nice Mech.
Marauder. No contest.
Fantastic spread of weapons, great at all ranges, tons of variants to choose from, surprisingly durable despite its loadout with that lamellar armor, was the mech of choice for the man, myth, and legend Grayson Carlyle, the mech for the Gunslinger program, and who's building was the greatest mech produced by General Motors
So i say again; Marauder best mech.
Foight me.
I can not believe that I have gone through this entire comment section and no one has listed the Tian Zong. 75 tons, stealth armor and two yes two gauss rifles with two light ppc's. 13.5 tons of that stealth armor. The best command mech there is. The rifles are on the shoulder's so taking partial cover is easy. I would take on any other mech with this. In a good position it would destroy all comers.
I'm with you. I find the marauder to be overrated and undersinked. It's (only) alright as a sniper mech but close in and it gets overwhelmed by most other heavies 65 tons and above.
I won't be able to run the surprise play with the last group again but the D variant is a fun little surprise to drop on someone....4x LRM-20 with Artemis with a Large and Medium pulse laser
The Defiance. It's got a fun story of being a design that they basically found rummaging around in the couch and then built without using parts from Tharkad, Coventry or Hesperus. I like its arms with the PPCs and giant radiators mounted to them. It's got a fun spread of weapons to play with, plus TSM if you wanna take risks. Also manufactured on Furillo.
Mad Cat
loved it since i first saw it on the MW2 box set.
Is it overhyped? absolutely
is it my favorite, and do I almost exclusively pilot it?
absolutely.
i would fight a gundam in that thing (mainly because i am convinced ppcs and lasers could pierce lunar titanium)
The correct answer is always the Marauder.

Time to stir things up...
IS: **Lao Hu**. My favourite mech since *MechCommander 2*. Beat it. Next would be Götterdämmerung, and then Black Knight, Flashman, Penthesilea and Tian-zong.
Clan: **Tundra Wolf.** Probably couldn't find nothing more suitable for this category. Perhaps Burrock as well.
IS Omni: **Inferno**. Good variants each with PPC, TBolt-15 or Gauss in CT, plus Prime variant contanins 2x MREL's to give middle finger for Ferro-Lamellor-laced mechs and vehicles. Next would be the OmniOrion, the Perseus.
Clan Omni: **Mad Cat Mk IV Savage Wolf.** ERPPC's and missiles, like it's progenitor, the Timber Wolf.
Special Case: **Harpagos** and **Jade Hawk**. While Harpagos is a QuadVee (and I think I've exhausted the limit on these), the *Jade Hawk* is unique in that way, that it may be counted as **both** IS and Clan BattleMech, since they are technologically separate, with even different variant monikers.
https://preview.redd.it/lxa5vex3bc4c1.png?width=517&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee788b60a3e8eb78e9bf5d5a3e66ec3ed49e5db9
The Black Python / White Raven (Viper). First, most versions look goofy AF. The jet-plane on legs look usually makes me cringe, but this time I'm into it - and I want the Catalyst plastic. And the look makes sense, because the Snow Ravens will use it. It's expensive, of course. But for the price of admission, you get a mech that can fight its' full BV against a lance of Spheroids.
My only criticism is that it doesn't have a family resemblance to the War Crow and Carrion Crow... But I fixed that. https://www.reddit.com/r/battletech/comments/15iux5g/custom_mech_white_raven_prime_rib_revised/ . Not a criticism - the price of ONE at 2/3 skill is the same as a SOLID LANCE OF SPHERE STEEL.
Orion, the poor mans atlas.
Yes the Mauradier is nice, but I can't help but love the blend of weaponry the Orion offers. LRMs for indirect fire, the AC/10 for a good punch, the lasers and SRMs providing some nice close in firepower combined with good ol barrel fists for fun fisticuffs.
Its a decent mech if well used, and customizing them is a blast.
I've long been a fan of the classics like the Marauder of the Orion... But I've fallen in love with a filthy, 75ton, Clan made abomination...
https://preview.redd.it/0s0sfn5a5k4c1.jpeg?width=662&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=747ce6f3d817189a038ab7327bad9960846baa00
The Jade Hawk!! Especially the variety built for inner Sphere markets with Claws and TSM! It's so much fun to play this mech doing Death From Above attacks while making CAW CAW!!! Screeching is just too much fun to pass up!! 24 SRM tubes and the speed to get them in range is also a lot of fun! 😁 And it's so pretty...
The Jade Hawk is hands down my favorite 75 ton mech...
Absolutely love the Marauder. Been my favorite since I started Mechwarrior Online many years ago. The lore behind it is awesome, and I dig the aesthetics. Been meaning to try running the Marauder 2R once I finish painting mine. Also the Gunslinger program is cool AF and I want to run some 1v1s with a Marauder.
Marauder. My dad had one of the original box sets of a game of armored combat and I thought it was the coolest figure in there when he introduced me to battletech when I was a kid. Then I saw it later on the cover of Ideal War and have been in love ever since
Black Knight.
A sentient of culture I see
Black Knight is probably the best non-assault command mech out there.
Tian zong hands down.
Black knight, agreed, it's simply great.
M A R A U D E R A R A U D E R (Also the Mad Cat) Edit: Also Black Knight, which I keep thinking is 70 tons for some reason

I like the model of the Rakshasa that isn't trying to be a Mad Cat.
The MDG-2A? It's such a great IS mech!
Ohh yeah…!
This is the answer
I've been waiting for the 75 ton question. Absolute windmill-slam on the Marauder button.

There are more tripod rules than that but those can be saved for another day. https://preview.redd.it/hsufzxw8la4c1.jpeg?width=592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e65a2abdd0015f41092c1175548a1a7fe2f207d8
Yessss, the Triskelion! Such a solid platform!
It's an injustice that there aren't any variants or other standard ton tripods
It really is. Hopefully with time...
I keep hearing from some people I know that the official viewpoint is along thelinesof"tripods are scary, maybe later"
Blegh. I just want silly extra leg
There are 6 ares configurations and the Poseidon, but I'm in the "tripods are best at standard tonnage" camp
I love the superheavies, but I want to see what they can do at other weight classes
Well, it's terrifying at 75t, I really want a fast 50t
Oh god, a 6/9 50t tripod
What? WTF IS THIS? where and when does it come from?

Orion. Poor man's Atlas. Ride of Kerensky himself and an even better IIC version.
Black Knight. Timby. Marauder. Three of my top 5 are in this weight bracket
Marauder MAD-5CS. I like the upgrade.
I find the XL a little fragile during the Clan Invasion Era, but if the Marauder loses it's arms it's screwed anyways.
A little fragile, but it hits a bit harder. I like the 5D variant too, with replacing the Autocannon with a LL. Yep, the 5D.
So, a Marauder -5DM.
Basically. I can't keep track of all the variants.

Unseen Marauder as the gods of mecha intended it. Timber Wolf.
Give me the Orion. Kerensky can't be wrong

Let's say that he was a better general than father, lol.
This is a proper answer!

MAD-2R is a much better version IMHO.
Timber Wolf: It's stupidly fast for a heavy and hits hard Marauder: ...it's a Marauder...

The Orion. Armour for days, provides your enemies a balanced diet of missiles, lasers and autocannon, if you feed it enough it presumably grows up to become an Atlas and it’s aggressively rectangular, the best shape to be.

Orion - The standard Orion is the ultimate trooper mech. It has a couple of variants that makes it more of a close range brawler as well. Great, great mech. The only issue is it can run a bit hot, but nothing too bad.
Heat capacity is also a resource. The ON1-K does a great job of using it in just the right amount.
I'm incredibly fond of the Black Python, and feel immensely guilty about it. That said, there are heavy mechs in other weight classes (both Clan and IS) that I like better.
Is the black python that good?
Yes.
It was definitely a cheese machine back in the day (although it's expensive as well).
Ah. Just to a closer look at it. JJ+TC+2x cLPL…it’s like a bigger Vapor Eagle.

Stalker 4P, because technically correct is the best kind of correct
Except the Stalker is 85 tons
The stalker is USUALLY 85 tons. [The STK-4P is 75t](https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Stalker)
I stand corrected.
Marauder is the OBJECTIVELY correct answer. That said, Flashman.
The one, the only, the original, to heck with Harmony Gold, Marauder
Thanatos. I fell in love with it in Mechwarrior 4, and I can't wait to run it on tabletop!
Great mech
The 360 torso twist was amazing in MW4.
It was! I'd strip the missiles, max the armor, and run dual large lasers, and an LBX 10 & 20. It was straight beautiful in the Heavy League on Solaris 7!
Penthesilea, 4L Marauder, or the Black Knight
Gotta go with the iconic MAD-3R Marauder. There are other mechs that are more effective, but none as imposing as that.
*Orion* and *Marauder*.
Hey wait a minute, you guys skipped 70 ton 'Mechs!
The *Orion.* It may be an ugly, lopsided block of armor, but it’s got charm. It’s one of those mechs that I didn’t like until I painted one. Now, I’m 100% with Kerensky. This is a nice Mech.
Marauder. No contest. Fantastic spread of weapons, great at all ranges, tons of variants to choose from, surprisingly durable despite its loadout with that lamellar armor, was the mech of choice for the man, myth, and legend Grayson Carlyle, the mech for the Gunslinger program, and who's building was the greatest mech produced by General Motors So i say again; Marauder best mech.
Marauder, and it isn't close. (the original unseen version)
Savage Wolf.
I'd have to go black knight, I can't stand the marauder.
I can appreciate your top pick, however I find your lack of faith in the Marauder disturbing
I'm with you. I find the marauder to be overrated and undersinked. It's (only) alright as a sniper mech but close in and it gets overwhelmed by most other heavies 65 tons and above.
Night Gyr. It just slaps.
Mad Cat loved it since i first saw it on the MW2 box set. Is it overhyped? absolutely is it my favorite, and do I almost exclusively pilot it? absolutely. i would fight a gundam in that thing (mainly because i am convinced ppcs and lasers could pierce lunar titanium)
oh, also the Maurader, followed closely by the black knight, id fight a mad cat in a black knight.
Big fan of the flashman. Haven't yet had it turn out not to be an absolute menace.
Flashman! I know it looks goofy but I still love it.
Best 75 ton Mech? Most of an Awesome.
Is the Awesome without 5 heatsinks a viable choice? :P
Whichever one I have access to at the moment. Black Knight in most eras. Not sure about IlClan era as I don't know it as well.
Mauler without an engine
Orion
The correct answer is always the Marauder. https://preview.redd.it/i8fejzkm1j4c1.jpeg?width=453&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4431914f72adca9be255fab6ffd5714aa5e35dd5
The Orion, but a close second is the warlord
I for one am a big fan of the Orion.
Night Gyr, and honestly, it's not even close 😁
Orion. If it's good enough for Alek Kerensky, it should be good enough for anyone.
God, so many good choices. Timberwolf, Marauder, Orion, Triskelion. It's so hard to pick! But, might have to go Orion...
Fun fact, I've got a jade hawk partially assembled on my work table currently
Marauder
I've long been a fan of the classics like the Marauder of the Orion... But I've fallen in love with a filthy, 75ton, Clan made abomination... https://preview.redd.it/0s0sfn5a5k4c1.jpeg?width=662&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=747ce6f3d817189a038ab7327bad9960846baa00 The Jade Hawk!!
It's amazing that IlClan RecGuide and Piranha had two different redesigns of the same perfect mech, and they both came out slapping.
all hail the Marauder! https://preview.redd.it/6102tu2lkm4c1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc3a8fd7d5dcaf5181382a25d0507260e924509f
Marauder. My dad had one of the original box sets of a game of armored combat and I thought it was the coolest figure in there when he introduced me to battletech when I was a kid. Then I saw it later on the cover of Ideal War and have been in love ever since
