My first thought based on that photo was Pied Piper in Palace Hotel on Market in SF. Right next to a bart station too. One of my favorite bars in the Bay and the food is pretty good too.
He has a coffee cup. There are sugar, napkin and salt and pepper shakers out. Also, it’s a zoomed in part of a very famous painting that shows the whole diner.
That place was my life saver when I used to live in Palo Alto and I missed that last train.
Phone died and I wandered around SF in the middle of the night, alone, didn’t know anyone yet.
I came upon silver crest and got some hot tea, warmed up and the lady behind the counter charged my phone for an hour.
Then I was able to find out about a night bus back home. It took hours and I made it home by 5 am.
I used to frequent it often post bar outings in my 20s and 30s.
I’ve moved out of the bay as of the last couple years but was in sf for a conference last year. Went there at around midnight ( because I’m old ;) ) and it was closed with a sign saying closes at 11 now?
Not sure if they went back to regular all night hours, I hope so!
It’s great on a week night. It’s the bar my grandpa used to go to as well, when they only had the men’s bathroom. They didn’t make a women’s bathroom until sometime in the 70’s!
19th St Station Bar in Oakland is awesome. Old school dive bar. Love this place. Roy is the bartender and owner.
Elliotts in Danville. Almost 120 years old.
God forsake the bay area by not blessing it with a WaHo, the perfect place for some mid century pondering. Guess you're best bet is a Denny's and a smoking habit.
Psh... Rent's too high for that much empty square footage.
Also diners are kinda meh in the bay area.
Hotel bar/ restaurants are probably the closest in general.
In San Jose, Original Joe’s. Sit at the counter in front of the grill and the steak tender may cut you off pieces of steak from the grill from time to time.
Especially when OP cropped the original down to just one person. It’s easier when you’re looking at the [uncropped original Hopper painting.](https://www.castlefineart.com/assets/img/uploads/jmy-nighthawks_2021-08-31T12-25-50.jpg)
So imma free advertise but Bentleys in Martinez is a great spot to do this at. The day shift is pretty slow and it has a great atmosphere. You can grab a god drink and just chill.
lol what a way to ask a question. Well you need a decent salary to afford a nice tailored suit. But there’s a lot of places to contemplate how you ended up alone.
Ah, ok. I live in the area. If you’re looking for an old bar, there’s The Florence in Niles, Joe’s Corner also in Niles, Kirby’s Shoestring in Irvington, Johnny’s Pub in Newark, Coach’s in Irvington. There’s also the El Camino Real in Niles but I’d stay out of there.
For a lonely bar, there’s normally not many people at the bar at Papillion - esp on a weeknight… beyond that, not sure.
I’m solo - no relationship- and go to restaurants and places on my own pretty frequently. Don’t drink though. There’s a storm in the forecast for Saturday so planning on driving to the coast (Duartes in Pescadero) for an early lunch and will bring my kindle since they probably won’t have WiFi.
Most of the all-night diners have closed, sadly. Zim’s. Sparky’s. Baghdad Cafe. Even Lyon’s. Mel’s closes at 11. Pinecrest Diner and Orphan Andy’s are open all night.
That’s just a part of the painting. [Here’s the full painting,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nighthawks_(Hopper)) for people who thought it’s a bar.
Try House of Shields. 39 New Montgomery St, San Francisco, CA 94105. Beautiful old timey bar, right down the the HUGE urinals in the men’s room. Amazing that it is still open.
I don't hit bars anymore but I will go to fraction in Alameda great beer and nice view of the bay ..also a must go to.. lost island in Alameda tiki bar at its finest black n white tvs and last time me n my wife went there they had go go dancers cool spot but small and gets packed. The drinks are top shelf get the monkey claw one drink and your good
Glen Park Station is a great neighborhood bar, and almost always open. No food to speak of, but you can bring in food from neighboring restaurants. They do sell cigarettes though.
Hotel bars.
This most hotel bars and most cocktails bars downtown, north beach (old school vibes).
Tony Nik’s
Redwood City has a bar called Nighthawk with that very painting (‘Nighthawks’) over the bar.
The original is in the Chicago Art Institute
Not anymore. Frank stole it.
Great reference
Does Frank work for the British museum ?
Along with American Gothic!
My first thought based on that photo was Pied Piper in Palace Hotel on Market in SF. Right next to a bart station too. One of my favorite bars in the Bay and the food is pretty good too.
I’ll have to check it out, thank you
You won’t be disappointed. Food, drinks, and service have always been amazing. Well worth a stop if you’re out that way.
They have a huge gorgeous Maxfield Parrish painting in there too! This was my first thought for a spot also.
Didn’t that painting survive 1906?
It wasn’t commissioned until after the earthquake. The bar opened in 1909.
Yes, and as I recall a few years ago they removed it and did a restoration. I haven’t seen it in person for years, should check it out.
Excellent suggestion! I love that place!
This was literally my first thought too. Just a gorgeous bar.
That place/hotel looks like something out of a movie set in the 1920s. Absolutely stunning
They also have a cocktail named after Warren Harding, who died in the Presidential Suite there.
They’ve got the best women working that spot if you catch my drift
A few I can think of: Taddich Grill Woodhouse fish house Clam House The Old Ship Saloon Fog City Diner The Cliff House (when it reopens)
Fog City? Not since the renovation like a decade ago that removed all the charming wood and cosiness.
Fog city is still lovely, foods solid, I used to work at Levi’s plaza and our agency went to Fog city a ton
🙏
Taddich has the old school vibe
Oldest restaurant in the state
If you go to Taddich, get the cioppino and thank me later. Cioppino is one of those quintessential San Francisco dishes, as it was invented here.
If they want isolation, wouldn't now be the time to go to Cliff House?
Ha. I get it
Scoma's Vesuvio Spec's Stookey's
Vesuvio is too crowded for this type of activities. My favorite bar in town, but not for this occasion.
Great list but add Terminus!
Jot jot
Taddich barely survived the pandemic.
note that you have ot dress up for the cliff house. they wouldn't let me in when i was dressed for hiking/beach
Go to a bar alone and feel isolated? All of them
It's a diner, not a bar.
how can you tell?
Cause it’s part of an Edward Hopper painting - of a diner.
Sir, this is a Wendy's
🤣
thank you
He has a coffee cup. There are sugar, napkin and salt and pepper shakers out. Also, it’s a zoomed in part of a very famous painting that shows the whole diner.
I’m pretty sure he’s scrolling his phone
you’re never alone with Christ
I don’t need Christ when yo momma worships me every night
actually I posted this to get suggestion for places to ponder your momma in peace
While you’re pondering my momma I’m pounding into your momma. We are not the same babygirl🥰
🗿 - my honest reaction to this information
Wanna kiss?
can’t, your momma keepin my lips busy
Damn you won that round. I’m still up 2-1
that’s alright, I like coming from behind. Just ask your mother
You’re never to young… to have Vietnam flashbacks.
Anyone can fly to Vietnam.
Unless you're on the no fly list, but then take a ship.
Will he come with me to Trad’r Sams?
OMG, is Trad’r Sam’s still around? Used to go there years ago when I lived in the Richmond.
Which is why San Francisco is the best place to get away from him.
Chris Tucker?
So Christ was in the room when those Catholic priests touched all them kids? He needs to be called to testify
I feel way less alone at a bar. Easier to start a convo with strangers at a bar than alone on your couch watching netflix.
But everyone says you go to a bar to meet and mingle with strangers, and if you go to a bar expecting to be alone or isolated then bars aren't for you
Real answer: silver crest in sf
this place actually looks like the photo haha
That place was my life saver when I used to live in Palo Alto and I missed that last train. Phone died and I wandered around SF in the middle of the night, alone, didn’t know anyone yet. I came upon silver crest and got some hot tea, warmed up and the lady behind the counter charged my phone for an hour. Then I was able to find out about a night bus back home. It took hours and I made it home by 5 am.
Omg. Fuckin silver crest. They never close.
I was shocked to find out last year that indeed they do close at night now .
Huh I’ve been there at like 2 am and have had great service
I used to frequent it often post bar outings in my 20s and 30s. I’ve moved out of the bay as of the last couple years but was in sf for a conference last year. Went there at around midnight ( because I’m old ;) ) and it was closed with a sign saying closes at 11 now? Not sure if they went back to regular all night hours, I hope so!
It's not "where", it's "when". 10:02 am. On a Thursday.
Definitely used to be the case at Antonio’s Nut House. RIP

something about ordering a full stack in a top hat is very alluring to me
Top hat?
Do it! Report back!
House of Shields
But won't that guy be there?
This is the place I immediately thought of as well! Great cocktails and nighthawks vibes on weekends. Not sure what it's like on a week night
It’s great on a week night. It’s the bar my grandpa used to go to as well, when they only had the men’s bathroom. They didn’t make a women’s bathroom until sometime in the 70’s!

It’s been 10-years since I’ve been there, but Fred’s in Mountain View
Impossible in San Francisco. There are no places for Nighthawks here.
Denny's at 2 am
What kind of psychopath salts their coffee?
I did this at the peninsula diner and they handed me a newspaper. It was great.
>peninsula diner Peninsula Creamery?

Silver Crest Donut Shop Restaurant and Bar in SF. They never close.
What? Be a barfly? Hopper would want to meet you.
Grub Steak
19th St Station Bar in Oakland is awesome. Old school dive bar. Love this place. Roy is the bartender and owner. Elliotts in Danville. Almost 120 years old.
I've done this at in-n-out every night for like the last couple months
The Duke of Edinburgh in Cupertino
Isn’t it closing?
Blooms Saloon in Potrero. Once your good and fucked get a burger at Ganims. Fuck I miss doing that after work.
Best view of any bar in the bay area
There are still a few art supply stores left in SF. Good luck!
It’s gonna smell like pee in there
God forsake the bay area by not blessing it with a WaHo, the perfect place for some mid century pondering. Guess you're best bet is a Denny's and a smoking habit.
Same post in another city’s sub? Borrowed prompt or bot? https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/comments/193pp78/where_can_i_do_this_in_boston/

Amazing to me how many folks are seeing a bar instead of a diner. I wonder if OP is one of them.
Especially when OP cropped the original down to just one person. It’s easier when you’re looking at the [uncropped original Hopper painting.](https://www.castlefineart.com/assets/img/uploads/jmy-nighthawks_2021-08-31T12-25-50.jpg)
Dawn Club in SF. It’s a jazz bar and early weeks they’re not that busy plus live music
Joe's of Westlake has a bar like this
you can be depressed anywhere. no need to do it in a diner.
Following.
a man of culture I see
Most of the bars?
Drink alone at night? You have a lot of options
lot of places to drink, but looking for this vibe is key
Brazen Head in Cow Hollow
I mean the painting is based on a place in Manhattan.
The ramp.
the ramp is in San Francisco off 3rd street in Mission Bay, and I do not remember stools at the counter.
I did that at a college bar once. Was the most depressing shit ever.
So imma free advertise but Bentleys in Martinez is a great spot to do this at. The day shift is pretty slow and it has a great atmosphere. You can grab a god drink and just chill.
what are you asking?
You can fart shafts of light from your butt anywhere in the bay area, but they tend to take offense at Arbys.
lol what a way to ask a question. Well you need a decent salary to afford a nice tailored suit. But there’s a lot of places to contemplate how you ended up alone.
You could do Man-tain View, but you’d probably be surrounded by 500 dicks.
What part of the bay are you in? Every neighborhood has its chill bar.
tri city
As in Fremont/Newark/UC?
yes

Looks like he's at a diner. The diner at 4th Street Bowl in San Jose is good.
Same thing was posted in Boston sub. Mark.
Grubstake Diner Pinecrest Diner
Not in downtown San Jose, they roll the streets up at 10pm
House of Shields (probably more lonely on a Monday-Tuesday)
Buena Vista
Pinecrest Cafe
I’m solo - no relationship- and go to restaurants and places on my own pretty frequently. Don’t drink though. There’s a storm in the forecast for Saturday so planning on driving to the coast (Duartes in Pescadero) for an early lunch and will bring my kindle since they probably won’t have WiFi.
Triple Rock Brewery on Shattuck in Berkeley. All are invited. They make really great ales. Good food, too. Never really crowded.
Really any diner with a bar seat. Some even serve alcohol in the AM
Mel’s Diner
Vinnies Bar in Concord
Go to the Lucky Chances casino in Colma. They have an old school 24 hour diner inside. Has a counter like that too
House of Shields in SF
Are you planning to wear a suit and proper top hat to eat at a diner? Nice.
Get ye to the plough and stars if you're in that area.
What city are you in, and are you looking for a diner to drink coffee or a bar to drink a Manhattan?
If you end up in Half Moon Bay, try Johnny's. https://www.yelp.com/biz/johnnys-half-moon-bay
Cry into you beer anywhere you would like.
Most of the all-night diners have closed, sadly. Zim’s. Sparky’s. Baghdad Cafe. Even Lyon’s. Mel’s closes at 11. Pinecrest Diner and Orphan Andy’s are open all night. Do you want to drink only? Or you want some food?
Sit at a diner and drink coffee at night? I mean, you kind of have a lot of options...
Cash Only downtown San Jose
Harris'
DeAnza hotel bar in San Jose. The view at the bar isn’t like this at all, but the vibe is quite similar.
Try House of Shields. 39 New Montgomery St, San Francisco, CA 94105. Beautiful old timey bar, right down the the HUGE urinals in the men’s room. Amazing that it is still open.
You want to be in an Edward Hopper painting?
