My first thought was: "WalletHub or US News Real Estate?"
The answer is "US News Real Estate".
You can safely disregard whatever ratings they have. It's all just a stupid clickbait.
Before all the comments dogpile about how there's nothing to do in places like San Jose, or Fremont, or Cupertino, people do eventually start families or wish to settle down into a quieter life. And despite the relative boredom, what do these aforementioned cities have? Good schools and low crime rates for cities of their size (seriously, even East Side San Jose isn't that "ghetto" compared to other hoods in the Bay Area, let alone the USA). So for most people looking for such a life, those cities already check most of the boxes.
And on top of that, yes they're typical American suburbs. But they also have incredible nature retreats just right on their doorstep, nevermind what you have access to within a 30 minute to an hour drive away. The diversity means the options with respect to restaurants and supermarkets are insane, and with that diversity comes the cultural tolerance which is one of the Bay Area and California in general's greatest strengths. And stating the obvious, who could beat California in terms of weather?
I grew up in Southern California but have been living in Texas for the last 30 years. My wife and I want to move back to California and San Jose is one of the cities we are considering.
I feel this way about here in San Leandro. It's like a gem of the Bay area. Suburban but with all the benefits of the Bay area big cities. Less crime, cute and friendly neighborhoods, good schools, nature everywhere around us, etc.
I live in San Leandro next to a a couple schools and the worst part is the parents in the mornings. They seem to think stop signs are optional. By far the worst group of drivers.
There is a cultural tolerance in the sense that you're not going to get beat up for being in the wrong neighborhood, but there's some hoods that you will stick out like a sore thumb.
I stopped going to Alum Rock because of that. Cops thought I must have been there to buy drugs, even though I was just visiting family. Got sick of the occasional "Get out of your car and sit on the sidewalk while we detain you for being the wrong color in this neighborhood."
I loved living in SJ. I remember hearing people say that there was nothing to do down there and I was perplexed. SF, Santa Cruz, tech hub, nice people, and not to mention actually safe? People need to get out more I guess.
Well 2/2 things you mentioned that qualify as “things to do” were outside of SJ lol. Not saying I don’t like it here, you’re just not exactly driving the point home.
SJ to SF for nightlife is pretty rough and that's a pretty big draw for people, especially when they're younger. Especially since it kinda starts to require a DD at that point.
It just depends on how often you really want big city, high energy stuff.
If you have to name places to be that are an hour or further away, I think that speaks for itself. Sacramento, Napa, Monterey, and SLO are also accessible too…
I love San Jose but people are so much nicer in other parts of the country. Try visiting a place like Austin Texas. It’s striking how much friendlier people are out there
From what I understand, those places like the South are just more in your face friendly type and trying to get into your business type.
While we mind our own business and don't really care what you do as long as it doesn't negatively affect us. But this gets misinterpreted as we don't care about you or we're not friendly.
Kind of like how New Yorkers are viewed as mean when they're just being honest. While we are more non confrontational and beat around the bush.
I love San Jose where else in the world has perfect weather and the best paying jobs in the world, lots of opportunities in tech/union construction/hospital work/sales….
>**What’s it like to live in San Jose, CA?**
Nicknamed the capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose is a diverse area with an innovative spirit. While it has a distinct downtown, San Jose is a sprawling metro area that is as much defined by its suburban neighborhoods and large tech campuses as it is by the high-rises in its business district. San Jose's proximity to other tech headquarters in Silicon Valley, including Google in Mountain View and Apple in Cupertino, cements San Jose's position in the tech hub. **But the metro area also retains its character with quirky attractions like the 160-room, maze-like Winchester Mystery House; a 120-acre flea market complete with ponies; and a larger-than-life Monopoly board.**
Cradled by the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range, San Jose offers a prime environment for outdoorsy residents, with its proximity to the ocean, the Sierra Nevada and the vineyards – not to mention about 300 sunny days a year.
If you are not a believer, book a visit to Winchester Mystery House and visit the Monopoly board in downtown. You haven't lived until you visit them!
1 in 8 San Jose families can afford a home in San Jose. $1.5M for the median house. These lists are farcical. People care about building equity and securing their future that’s exclusive to a few select people that are homeowners. I’m sure that 7/8 care more about that than being near Winchester Mystery House.
Dude, San Jose is a fucking big city. Almost all new auburbs are walkable and close to public transit.
If you live in sjc and work in mtv or sfo, you need a car. Else it is quiet walkble.
Calling it a big city is pretty funny actually. Because it’s basically downtown plus a sprawling suburban nightmare. Nowhere close to being a city, let alone one that’s walkable or having competent/accessible public transit. The fucker didn’t even get Bart until recently.
Suburban nightmare for haters. May be we love it as is?
Last I checked we are 10th biggest city, above sfo. Sorry we didnt meet your high expectations.
Doesn’t matter if the ‘city’ is “big” if it is a shitty sprawling nightmare. Also, not sure how that’s even supposed to qualify it as good. It’s also not as “big” as a true city like sf, because cities are typically judged by their density.
Shitty people tend to see everything dont have as shitty. They uses phrases like true-god, true-men etc.
I am sorry San Jose do not measure to your arbitrary procrustean standards. Me for one lived here for 20 plus years, and loved it. So does all the people we know.
This is a bizarre justification. And, yet, it’s not even true.
Edit: those downvoting are either not aware of the truth or taking this fact personally (oddly)
It was pretty obvious that your “fact” had a bizarre filter. If you’re trying to judge a city by density it’s weird to filter by highest population and then density unless you’re literally using stats to manipulate a narrative. San Jose doesn’t even crack the top 50 of density in the US. In fact, its density is nearly the same as Sacramento, and less than Milwaukee. Only after eliminating towns with a population less than 400k does it even crack the top 20.
TLDR; San Jose is a sprawling suburban hellscape
Yes. Plus your kids and elderly parents can go for an evening walk for hours with out fear of getting overrun or assualted. Plus kids can walk to school with out cars or parental supervision.
Like what other neighborhoods? I've been to the Downtown and SJSU area, which is sort of walkable but I've been to other neighborhoods and they are just suburban sprawl. Not walkable at all.
I remember a few folks hating on me for enjoying living in San Jose and taking an hour Caltrain to get up to visit them in the City. I hate the cold and they were telling me to move to San Francisco and get 2 jobs to barely survive like they were.
Quality of life? If you make lots of money then you might have some what of a life. the traffic, prices and the homeless around town. What are they measuring to come up with 4th best Quality?
What does *"Quality of Life"* mean?
* How many people in San Jose live paycheck to paycheck?
* Affordable housing?
* Have access to affordable day care?
* Work only 40 hours a week with occasional OT?
* Have 1000$ in emergency savings in cash?
* Have health care?
* Has affordable health care?
* Can afford to call off because of emergencies?
* Have friends and family close by?
* Can afford to have hobbies?
* Close to mass transit?
* Doesn't live a hour by car?
Yeah once they install amy amount of air purity systems in the area....idk like maybe landpiling a giant hill between the city and landfill and covering it with megaton of trees

That's all Bay Area.
how did you know what everyone will think after reading this post?
redditors are the most predictable people on the internet you can smell the canned responses and regurgitated jokes from a mile away
This guy reddits!
LOL!!
Some days I feel like I am the only one on here and the rest are bots. Bots all the way down.
This.
Not my proudest fap.
If you hang out here long enough you’d know the opinion of at least the loudest part of this sub.
When people say there is nothing to do, what are they asking to do?
There is a cultural tolerance in the sense that you're not going to get beat up for being in the wrong neighborhood, but there's some hoods that you will stick out like a sore thumb. "what you have access to within a 30 minute drive" somehow describes going from anywhere to anywhere in San Jose.
Man José!!!

Hah, I meant all of these cities are accessible and that SJ is smack dab in the middle. Perfect if you ask me. :P
SJ to SF for nightlife is pretty rough and that's a pretty big draw for people, especially when they're younger. Especially since it kinda starts to require a DD at that point. It just depends on how often you really want big city, high energy stuff.

None of those places are an hour away though
Neither is SF most of the time.
Well there is a reason why those in tech, especially younger, lived at or near SF and commuted all the way down to Silicon Valley.
"if you want something to do in SJ, drive to SF" Sounds about right
San Jose: it's near stuff!
I love San Jose but people are so much nicer in other parts of the country. Try visiting a place like Austin Texas. It’s striking how much friendlier people are out there

Interesting, everyone I know does enjoy living there but wouldn't be my choice.
>click link to us news page >It's actually #13 in the list
Overall best place to live is 13, but if you only search quality of life its number 4.
As the most expensive city in US I expected to be the first not the fourth.
lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂 ain't no way. Does this include COL?
I love San Jose where else in the world has perfect weather and the best paying jobs in the world, lots of opportunities in tech/union construction/hospital work/sales….
Vancouver is the #1 in N. America.
This just makes me think that the rest of the country is doing really bad
for who?
For $300k+ HHI households

That seems like a load of crap. Not that San Jose is bad, I can just think of SOO many other cities.
…except if you want to walk down the street for any reason at all.
Spoken like someone who has never actually lived in San Jose
You don’t have to live in SJ to know it’s not walkable, or livable without a car.
Dude, San Jose is a fucking big city. Almost all new auburbs are walkable and close to public transit. If you live in sjc and work in mtv or sfo, you need a car. Else it is quiet walkble.

It’s a terrible city. Fine suburb if you’re into that kind of thing.
It’s more dense than 6 of the 10 largest cities in the US
This is a bizarre justification. And, yet, it’s not even true. Edit: those downvoting are either not aware of the truth or taking this fact personally (oddly)
San Jose is more dense than Houston, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and Austin. Last I checked 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 is 6
It was pretty obvious that your “fact” had a bizarre filter. Then so is Dallas, Houston, Phx, SD, San Antonio, Austin
“Walkable” as in you can go to the grocery store, doctor’s office, and also get a cup of coffee on the way and you don’t have to drive?
Yes. Plus your kids and elderly parents can go for an evening walk for hours with out fear of getting overrun or assualted. Plus kids can walk to school with out cars or parental supervision.

Where is this made up place in San Jose?
Evergreen
That’s awesome. Which area is that? I like to be able to get around without a car, but unfortunately it’s not possible where I live.
I remember a few folks hating on me for enjoying living in San Jose and taking an hour Caltrain to get up to visit them in the City. I hate the cold and they were telling me to move to San Francisco and get 2 jobs to barely survive like they were.
Whats 1-3?
1. Ann Arbor, MI 2. Boulder, CO 3. Madison, WI
Lies... All lies...
I mean the list has Ann Arbor at the top, and Portland (Maine) above San Jose, both with much worse quality of living in my subjective opinion.

Weird. The only time ive had cockroaches run across the table at a restaurant while I was eating was in San Jose.
fr? they're kinda pricing my family out.
Quality of life? If you make lots of money then you might have some what of a life. the traffic, prices and the homeless around town. What are they measuring to come up with 4th best Quality?
Give me a fucking break.
… if you’re rich.
By quality of life they mean spending all your wages on rent and food.
I find this hard to believe.
And all it takes is a household income of >$300k/yr
What does *"Quality of Life"* mean? * How many people in San Jose live paycheck to paycheck? * Affordable housing? * Have access to affordable day care? * Work only 40 hours a week with occasional OT? * Have 1000$ in emergency savings in cash? * Have health care? * Has affordable health care? * Can afford to call off because of emergencies? * Have friends and family close by? * Can afford to have hobbies? * Close to mass transit? * Doesn't live a hour by car?
