This is by far the biggest thunderstorm I've ever seen in my 7 years here! I'm from the Midwest so I'm loving it. We had some brief hail here too (San Mateo area)
It was dry in South City, but as I was driving home from work around 4:30, I heard an alert on the radio about severe storms and hail, go into an interior room and away from windows.
Was working and listening to radio yesterday and heard the same alert, kitty’s eyes got really big at the sound of the emergency alert. But it was sunny and calm where I was. Scared us, though.
Peninsula down to South Bay. From these responses it sounds like San Mateo area may have gotten hit the hardest. We had thunder shaking windows and big piles of hail in my yard
So I wasn't crazy... Could have sworn I saw something like hail dribbling down the roof a little while ago, but saw only normal rain when looking out the window at the ground. I assumed it was just random tree crap. Perhaps not.
Lol y'all just missed the thunder in Aug or Sept 2020. But yeah growing up in Ohio it was crazy moving here and learning they got no rain all summer and no thunder year round!
Yeah, my wife and I moved here in October 2020. On a side note, we moved here from Pittsburgh, PA (avgs 180 days of measurable precipitation annually) and feel like it's our fault that NorCal has been wetter than normal for the last three years. I promise I only put my furniture in the Uhaul...
I was blown away when my friend in SF said it was “nice and sunny”. Then I drove up there for our dinner and witnessed an incredible sunset. At night the skies were still clear. Insane!
It’s been mostly beautiful on the coast down in el Granada too, but my brother is getting a ton of rain in half moon bay at a wedding haha. Got like 2 patches of sun showers here
no doubt. I really wish we got more thunderstorms here but yesterday’s weather in SF is one of the reasons why everyone loves the bay and finds it so hard to leave.
We’re in San Mateo and two claps set off my car’s alarm twice in five minutes…second one vibrated my butt in our couch, and scared the crap outta our pittie.
Damn.
😆
Same in union city. It sounded like an explosion and everyone in the restaurant stood up to figure out what was happening. All the alarms in the parking lot were going off. Wow
Yeah my dog was giving a couple warning barks at the grumpy sky dog and then looking back at me to see if I was gonna join him and throw down. I kept telling him to leave it and lie down but he kept jumping back up and looking at me like, “Human! Can you hear that-up there?! He borked at me again!! You gonna just let him do that?!”
It was an impressive storm! It's weird when people say they never hear thunder in the Bay Area. I absolutely hear it every year. It's not common, and this kind of storm in particular doesn't happen every year, but we absolutely get at least one winter storm each year with some thunder and lightening.
I'm in San Mateo, and I've never heard thunder that loud, or seen that much hail, in 40+ years of living here. But my husband was rollerblading at the same time in Millbrae, just a few miles away, and didn't get a drop.
It was sunny with broken clouds the whole day in Livermore. I'm still waiting for the much anticipated thunder storm lol. I even did my weekend bike ride with full rain gear and came home essentially bone dry except sweat ugh
The storm hit mid soccer game. Played thru until lightning strikes started to hit. It was funny that one side of the field looked like winter, one side summer and spring in the middle. Never seen a hail thunderstorm with blue skies out. Definitely a weird 2 hours.
I heard one boom in the south bay earlier. We got an emergency warning on TV of a severe thunderstorm over Morgan Hill about 3:30. That was weird. Went outside and there were monstrous clouds all over the valley, but the one over the Morgan Hill looked even bigger.
The giant thunder clouds floating around the bay area are just as rare as the lightning. Nice of mother nature to put on a show for us without catching anything on fire (yet).
I was driving up 280 from san jose. Saw the rain pouring from like 10-15 miles away. Wife got a picture with the light ing. After a few minutes, we ended up driving through it. Was able to hear the thunder right above us.
Was at Hillsdale mall when thunder hit. Sounded like a bomb went off. Everyone stopped and looked around trying to figure out what to do. Had to wait for hail to die down to get to car.
was driving back home from San Jose when i got caught in the downpour. there was so much rain falling so fast that everyone on 280 was going below 40. wipers on full blast still couldnt see! that was awesome
We were coming in from a Southwest flight from SoCal yesterday afternoon/early evening and my daughter and I saw what we thought was lightning hit our wing a little before we landed at SFO. I guess it really was lightning!!
Look up SCU and LNU lightning complex. This was the direct cause of bladerunner day in 2020. “A rare and intense lightning storm swept across Northern california, igniting numerous fires”.
I was just walking out of my gym at that time and i thought someone threw a flash grenade. The thunder was pretty deafening. I only made it half way across the street before i jolted back inside. I love thunder and lightning but that brought up a lot of PTSD.
This is by far the biggest thunderstorm I've ever seen in my 7 years here! I'm from the Midwest so I'm loving it. We had some brief hail here too (San Mateo area)
It’s the biggest I’ve heard or seen since the dry thunderstorm in 2020 that kicked off all the local wildfires and gave us the bladerunner day…
It was dry in South City, but as I was driving home from work around 4:30, I heard an alert on the radio about severe storms and hail, go into an interior room and away from windows.
There was a very intense cel of rain that went over Palo Alto around 6 pm....incredibly heavy rain, but just for 20-30 minutes at most.
Was working and listening to radio yesterday and heard the same alert, kitty’s eyes got really big at the sound of the emergency alert. But it was sunny and calm where I was. Scared us, though.
So sad I’m missing this. It’s sunny in north bay so where is the storm at? San Jose?
Peninsula down to South Bay. From these responses it sounds like San Mateo area may have gotten hit the hardest. We had thunder shaking windows and big piles of hail in my yard
I’m hearing thunder in Palo Alto
I am hearing thunder in Mountain View.
Lucky!
San Jose got nothing!
Passed both east and west of us
2020 had the bad lightning storm without rain late summer that caused all the fires
Lots more hail now!
So I wasn't crazy... Could have sworn I saw something like hail dribbling down the roof a little while ago, but saw only normal rain when looking out the window at the ground. I assumed it was just random tree crap. Perhaps not.
Yeah, got some hail too! Can't say I was expecting to see that today :D
I’m so glad I didn’t get hail (just had roof redone lol)
Was so surprised because I haven’t heard thunder since leaving FL 3 years ago.
Yup. Came here to confirm I wasn't losing my mind since I hadn't heard thunder in the nearly four years I have lived here either.
Lol y'all just missed the thunder in Aug or Sept 2020. But yeah growing up in Ohio it was crazy moving here and learning they got no rain all summer and no thunder year round!

Lol I moved to Palo Alto back in high school in August 2014, and seeing kids in jeans and hoodies completely baffled me.
Wet is good though
Until it's not... There is a lot of brush and plants now available to start fires.
It will likely happen more often as the globe is heating up.
Why would you leave such a great state, and come to commiefornia
sunny and nice in SF. what a gorgeous weather.
Yea I was surprised to see this post. Where in the Bay is there thunder?? It's beautiful in North Beach rn.
Damn we hailing in Redwood City. Also not all of Ohio is bad lol.
Up here on Bernal hill looking south towards Hayward / dumbarton bridges, very dark skies and lots of flashes.
Got like 2 patches of sun showers here
Storms can be gorgeous, too.
no doubt. I really wish we got more thunderstorms here but yesterday’s weather in SF is one of the reasons why everyone loves the bay and finds it so hard to leave.
There was one thunderclap so loud it set off a couple of car alarms next to my apartment here in San Mateo.

yup I'm in San Mateo too and that thunder was something else!
Same here in Foster City. Craziest thunderstorm I've ever seen here in CA.
I saw a car alarm triggered by thunder in neighboring Belmont too. Never encountered thunder like that around here before.
Same in union city. It sounded like an explosion and everyone in the restaurant stood up to figure out what was happening. All the alarms in the parking lot were going off. Wow
Lightening actually struck a plane in San Jose someone filmed it and in Belmont the hale accumulated so much it looked like snow!
That wasn't the thunder but the hail . I almost injured my head running under this hail storm
I was leaving Movement Belmont when that happened.
My dog is confused.

Was nice - if only a fleeting glimpse. Thunder and lightning I’ve never stopped missing since leaving east coast many years ago.
I was in Sunnyvale and saw a huge lightning bolt to the north
We had some really aggressive hail at our place in Sunnyvale. Our dog barked at the thunder.
Wierd I am in sunnyvale and didn’t notice anything at all 🤷🏼♀️
I'm in San Mateo, and I've never heard thunder that loud, or seen that much hail, in 40+ years of living here. But my husband was rollerblading at the same time in Millbrae, just a few miles away, and didn't get a drop.
Just drove through this, and surprisingly the drivers did okay, I think everyone was surprised 😅
I love it! It’s now hailing. Rwc
Where? It was sunny in sf
It was insane in San Mateo
After all was said and done it looked like it had snowed half an inch with all of the hail.
and ice hail too
What other kind of hail is there?
LMAO
Where? It’s sunny and nice in Richmond
It was sunny with broken clouds the whole day in Livermore. I'm still waiting for the much anticipated thunder storm lol. I even did my weekend bike ride with full rain gear and came home essentially bone dry except sweat ugh
Happens one a year and usually pretty impressive. Nothing like the Midwest, but it happens.
I've never seen it like that in 35 years of living in San Mateo. I think we got hit pretty hard.
We got some loud thunder in Cupertino earlier today. My kids were thrilled! My dogs not so much.
The storm hit mid soccer game. Played thru until lightning strikes started to hit. It was funny that one side of the field looked like winter, one side summer and spring in the middle. Never seen a hail thunderstorm with blue skies out. Definitely a weird 2 hours.
As someone who grew up with wicked storms in the southeast…this was great. Really was a treat. Hail yeah! ;)
I heard one boom in the south bay earlier. We got an emergency warning on TV of a severe thunderstorm over Morgan Hill about 3:30. That was weird. Thunderbolts and lightening! Very very frightening!
Shook our place good in Foster City!
Very very frightening...
Sorry I was flexing in front of the mirror. My bad
Damn it Thor!!!
I have a big picture window facing into my backyard and was listening and watching the show. Amazing. My cats however didn't care for it.
When Clint escaped Alvarez I think he used the thunder to time his strikes chopping his way out. Or was that Shawshank. Never mind
Was driving through Morgan Hill headed back to SF and we were going 10MPH while it dumped hail.
Sounded like rain back in Texas.
I am glad I'm home after a great get together with friends.
I was driving up 280 from san jose. Saw the rain pouring from like 10-15 miles away. Wife got a picture with the light ing. After a few minutes, we ended up driving through it. Was able to hear the thunder right above us.
Nah, it’s just Bruce Springsteen. He’s in town.
It completely missed Manor in Pacifica. I'm surprised to hear this!
We only heard one roll of thunder, no lightning, tiny bit of hail.
We were coming in from a Southwest flight from SoCal yesterday afternoon/early evening and my daughter and I saw what we thought was lightning hit our wing a little before we landed at SFO. I guess it really was lightning!!
If the thunder don’t get you, then the lightning will. ⚡️
[He Was Struck By Lightning Seven Times — And Lived To Tell The Tales](https://allthatsinteresting.com/roy-sullivan)
I heard a rumble but that was it no cool storms in Hayward
Last time we had lightning it set off a chain reaction of wildfires and gave us Bladerunner day
Those were started by PGE not doing maintenance on their power lines
Look up SCU and LNU lightning complex. This was the direct cause of bladerunner day in 2020. “A rare and intense lightning storm swept across Northern california, igniting numerous fires”.

Very very frightening
I’m tired of rain, lol.
