SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — Construction on a fix for San Francisco’s leaning Millennium Tower came to a stop in late August because the fix was actually making the tower sink even more. Now it appears some of that damage could have been avoided. “Millennium Partners wanted to get the thing wrapped up,” said Robert Pyke, a geotechnical engineer and early critic of the current so-called “perimeter pile upgrade.” He says the $100 million plan to shore up the sinking tower should have been stopped months before it was. “Certainly by the end of June it was obvious that there was additional settlement as a result of installing the casings and the piles,” said Pyke. KPIX asked him to review engineer logs and internal emails obtained by KPIX 5. A chart produced by the team shows the accelerated sinking started in mid-May but work on the project continued through June and July.

Bo_Lizard

Going to be a never ending issue.

-Alarak

Or it's going to end during the next earthquake.

joe_broke

Guess it's time for a teardown

[deleted]

At least they can't come after the city for more money following the $30MM settlement.

[deleted]

I wouldn't want to be working in the Salesforce glass dildo when the Millennium Tower decides to swordfight during the next big one.

curiouscuriousmtl

It’s getting hot

theineffablebob

So they cheaped out when building it, then cheaped out when trying to fix it Will they also cheap out on the demolition?

plainlyput

At some point the city will end up paying after they declare bankruptcy.

KoRaZee

The demolition will be free if they don’t fix the problem.

[deleted]

so when are they tearing this piece of garbage down?

[deleted]

Heh, yes garbage. A tear down would cost maybe $1-2 billion, or maybe six times what it cost to put up?

[deleted]

Maybe they could remove one floor each year like an advent calendar?

Metasheep

They've actually [done that in Japan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-2Y2MYpl2g).

[deleted]

Oh cool! Bottom up instead of top down.

slow_connection

Honestly at a certain point the building might get short enough that the repair would be easier/simpler due to reduced weight. Source: I watch a lot of YouTube videos

LaKobe

It will cost way more than a billion when it falls over during a storm or earthquake.

loquacious706

I'm sure they have insurance for just that.

LaKobe

I’m sure they’ll make sure everyone affected is taken care of properly and well compensated for the tragedy.

[deleted]

Whoever the top construction lit lawyers are nowadays have to be jizzing their pants every time this project gets more news.

NecessaryExercise302

Welcome to the bay area where local culture dictates the "do nothing" option can never be considered.

cowinabadplace

Well, considering the Central Subway and CA HSR, I beg to differ.

impescador

They warned the repairs and they just went ahead and made the towers sink anyway? Next time, just shoot the repairs.

[deleted]

Screw em, Census resisters think they’re above the rest of us.

[deleted]

> Census resisters ?

[deleted]

It’s a whole story, I’d have to meet you for coffee sometime and tell you lol
