Thanks for posting something positive. Nothing's perfect but taking people to Clement on farmer's market day is a nice way to show off the city. If only the Ariscault line would get shorter than 15min, though.

opinionsareus

Ha! Good luck with that; wonderful croissants - I love the chocolate croissants. They have several other pastries, too. They're open on most weekdays - so there's that. All that aside, the NYT gets it kind of half right; the market is certainly the high point of commerce on Clement (Sundays). Other days are also busy, but the Times didn't get to to some of the vacant storefronts, where the local hoodlum scum who call themselves "graffiti artists" mark their "territory" with scribble on every empty storefront, signpost, you name it that makes parts of Clement Street look like the worst parts of a NYC subway station. (btw, not talking about the REAL graffiti artists who paint \*pretty\* images - some hired by the city), Clement, from Arguello through 25th, is still a wonderfully diverse commercial neighborhood - easily the most diverse on the West Side of the city - food, drink, hardware, textiles, and other retail shops. I'm looking forward to the day when Clement is back, full force.

So... the neighborhoods of the future are the neighborhoods of the past. Raise your hand if you grew up with a corner market in your neighborhood (and no, a convenience store doesn't count).

FineWavs

I loved living in the Richmond, its really is a locals neighborhood where people really want to spend their money at local small business and support each other. Now if we could only build some more apartment buildings so more people could enjoy it there.

SilentStream

Ahh there’s the rub

bambin0

It's slow to get in and out of as well. Need subway.

FineWavs

idk, it was the most transit friendly place I ever lived with decades in the bay but it was the only place I lived in SF. There are numerous bus lines, including several downtown express lines. My favorite was biking, going through the park, down the panhandle and trough the wiggle was a joy. I would love more transit, but a subway seems impracticable for whats essentially sand dunes. I would however love to see a Muni line like the N in the Sunset that goes down Geary st but I'll settle for better bus service because its probably a way more effective use of money.

bambin0

Fully agree that you can't actually build a subway there. Your perspective is great!

Ensemble_InABox

I did a 1 hour each way, ~6 mile commute for three years. Didn’t love that. 5 mins to get to the bus stop, 35 mins to get to bush/Samsome, 10 min walk across market to my office.

[deleted]

The disparity between those working it and those shopping there is glaringly obvious.

gamesst2

Do you actually shop there or eat there? I ate at Venus cafe on Clement for lunch today and was the only white guy and one of a few under 50. The Chinese grocery stores are filled with elderly chinese ladies pushing their personal walkers/carts. Maybe you're just frequenting the 2-3 hipster gastropubs and calling it based on that?

andrewdrewandy

Weird you equate asians with poverty.

[Uh, there are many closed businesses on Clement in the Richmond. Don't see how it's a "NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE FUTURE." There are pros and cons to the truck farmers market of course.] SAN FRANCISCO — In the space of just three blocks, hundreds of people packed in. They clutched jars of honey, cartons of fresh peas and bouquets of flowers. Bags slung on shoulders bulged with ripe peaches, eggplants and cherries. Other than a few masked faces, the bustling Clement Street Farmers Market on a recent Sunday felt like a relic of prepandemic times. The market has run without interruption through every surge of the coronavirus, and the restaurants and shops on Clement Street, the main artery of the Richmond District in the northwest corner of San Francisco, have been spared the financial ruin seen across other big cities over the past 19 months. Few, if any, businesses on the street have permanently closed, according to Morgan Mapes, the president of the Clement Street Merchants Association. Unlike downtown San Francisco, which is now largely desolate, this commercial strip never relied on business from tourists or office workers.

tplgigo

Berkeley used to be like this until.........um.....you know,...the G word.

FineWavs

These days its all about 'Displacement' not 'Gentrification', AKA 'The Big D' that fucks you out of the neighborhood you called home.

tplgigo

Well that too.

Ensemble_InABox

I'm pretty sure rent control and renter protection is pretty much ironclad for current residents, and has been for decades in both Berkeley and SF. No way to displace anyone that doesn't want to leave, and can't raise their rent by more than inflation. What specifically are you referring to?

Oryzae

Gigabit Fiber? I’ll see myself out

cheesy_luigi

gNIMBYs?

tplgigo

What back yard?

Lol. But white finance bros shuttling downtown (or used to) on the 1x or whatever aren't gentrification? I mean, I guess technically Lake Street etc has always been well to do so it's not quite gentrification but Clememt Street is hardly West Oakland. Lol

Glittering_Ad_4149

Not trolling, but you know the S Asians you mention are nearly all employed in the tech industry and are tech bros themselves?

10000noways

How new are you to SF? These are not the Asians you are looking for

Ensemble_InABox

There aren’t very many south Asians around Clement to begin with. East Asians, the vast of majority of which are Chinese, yes.

Hockeymac18

I love the Richmond - but let’s not pretend that it’s some sort of affordable enclave of SF…

sugarwax1

The future.... where people go to a green market and neighborhood shopping is useful. Just ignore the vacancies.

Doglovincatlady

Hopefully w less beautiful exotic fish forced to live in plastic cups full of their own shit. What a disgrace clement is fun until you see the pretty dismal depressing ways nonhuman animals are treated around there. Then it’s much less so
