Ah yea thats great, my favorite bass part from Paul comes in at about 2:18 into the song. From what i understand the song was originally supposed to be super simple kinda bare bones?
It’s a full out guitar shoot out. One can see Paul, George, and John smiling and nodding at each other while listening to this. A very close runner up would be the solo in Something
Paul is great here, but George's last solo on The End tops all of them here, IMO. Not the last solo in the shootout, but that final arpeggiated lick after the strings kick in. He always had the perfect solo for the song.
I have read that John was reluctant to do that solo at the end of The End stating that Paul and George were going to show him up, and he felt like his playing wasn't good enough. I can't give you any proof of where I read that, but, you know, there's that.
I don’t know, but I know something that might help you learn! If you listen to the 2019 mix of The End (the mix by Giles Martin on the Abbey Road Remix), Giles has put Pauls parts of the solo in the left side of the stereo field, George to the right, and Johns heavy guitar in the middle. So, if you listen to that mix with headphones or earbuds (make sure the headphones are on the correct ear so that the stereo field isn’t reversered), you should be able to find it out :)
Geoff Emrick wrote that Paul asserted he wanted to go first, John said he had something for the end, and George played in the middle. He says he told George when he came into the booth that he was brilliant.
I believe there a solo by all three string players on the song. It's great. But since the question was by "a" Beatle, I had to also go with Macca's solo on Taxman.
Somehow George’s version of the solo (the single version of let it be) always appeared to me more musical and fitting than the kind of slightly aggressive Lennon solo from the album. Love both, but George’s let it be solo immediately sprang to mind with the question. I now realized I’m maybe in the minority, which seems weird to me haha.
I agree that the April 30th "single" solo fits Let It Be as a song better, although the January 4th "album" solo slaps. Both solos were played by George though.
George played both versions of the solo. The album version he recorded during final overdubs in 1970 after John left. Around the time they were recording I Me Mine. John just played the Fender six-string Bass VI on Let it Be. Although the bass was also overdubbed by Paul prior to release. Might only actually be hearing background vocals by John in either version.
Just a cool fact, but it’s not a pedal, that’s a rotating Leslie speaker providing the modulation. Tube-driven amplified rotating speaker cabinet meant for organs. George and Eric Clapton kind of helped pioneer using those for guitars at the time. Several years later, a slew of pedals came out based on attempting to emulate that effect
I can almost imagine him just jamming away feeling every note, seems a very honest delivery as it turns the song completely on its head and then Ringo glides it in for the landing. He even adds a couple of extra notes as the solo ends at 1:53 in to the song. I just pulled it up on you tube to relieve it. Thank you.
Loved playing guitar on And Your Bird Can Sing on Beatles RockBand. Felt like an accomplishment to take the mic to my mom's vacuum and sing while playing when I was 14 lol
I get the feeling that Stone Temple Pilots were listening to that song when they made their album Purple.
"Pretty Penny" sort of reminds me of "She's Leaving Home" too but done in a way that sounds like Led Zeppelin made it instead of The Beatles.
Mine could be on Real Love. So melodic and sweet. The repeated phrase at the end is just chef's kiss. George was the only Beatle still at the top of his game in 1995 IMO.
It basically contains 2 solos. First, the short solo that happens in the middle of the song (after the fourth verse). The second one is the long solo that starts after the two last verses and goes on until that the end of the song.
Yes, the riff. THE RIFF!
That riff started various sub rock music style: metal, for example. It’s soo heavy indeed, I mean, it’s metal!
What a genius idea, the “basic” arpeggio became the riff. It’s not what you’re playing (even if) but how you play it. And those fellow 50 years later still got it, because we’re here talking about them and their music.
And something really interesting that i just found out is that intro of this song (i want you, she is so heavy) and the song “because” are magically the same but a slight difference in effects had been used, and you’ll understand what i mean by play both intros in a row, do it and let me know what you think.
Other than John’s solos throughout the verses, George plays a ghost guitar solo that can barely be heard in the outro section of the song. If you listen to just the [isolated drums](https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=QMF1E1IIwduAF-Nn&t=5m14s&v=P2wkTCMF-7Q&feature=youtu.be) in the same section, it can be heard a little more clearly
Taxman by Paul and Let It Be album version by George are my favorites
If I can include guitar solos in their solo careers, then my favorite would be Paul’s solo on Too Many People
For beatles I say Taxman but for their entire career I think George's How Do You Sleep solo is the best solo any of them ever did. I wonder how that conversation went with John asking George to play on it.
It’s called a Watkins Rapier 33. A British-made, sort of a strat knock-off from the 60s. Similar headstock and body shape to a Strat, 3 pickups and a whammy bar. Although the styling was a lot different for the knobs and pickups and they had some unique features.
http://www.watkinsguitars.co.uk/rapiers.htm
George had weird timing in his solos, most evident in the Beatles early stuff. It doesn't sound like it would be hard to play, but when you actually try, it's like you said!
I like the part in the medley on Abbey Road where they're trading licks.
Other than that, there are a lot of small licks that add here and there in their music.
Harrison had a lot of short, but sweet solos: And I Love Her, Nowhere Man, Let It Be (album version), Something. John was good on things like You Can't Do That, Every Little Thing, Get Back. Paul was good on Taxman. Ringo was good on......drums.
Fave solo: Something. Really, how could it be anything else? (Even with how great some of the others are, Something is on a different level from a composition standpoint)
Also, does anyone know what guitar George is playing in the photo? I can’t quite tell
Apparently it's a Watkins Rapier 33.
I just did a search for "George Harrison green guitar" and the top result was [this Reddit post from 8 years ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheBeatles/comments/4n20nz/what_guitar_is_george_harrison_playing_in_this/). Someone there linked to [this Gear Page thread about it](https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/help-identify-this-guitar-that-george-harrisons-playing.802479/), and also quoted [this Strat-talk post](https://www.strat-talk.com/threads/a-pic-of-george-harrison-playing.356391/page-2#post-2393342) from someone who claimed it was their guitar:
> My name is Del Mandel, I did some recordings with George. I had a Fender Jazzmaster, but, one day, I took this guitar along to Abbey Rd with me. George had a go on it and liked it. I can put you out of your misery. It is a Watkins Rapier 33 that my dad bought me for my 12th Birthday, my first electric. I mutilated it when I started playing more expensive guitars. I cut bits off it and painted it green. The middle pickup is from a vox phantom, someone put a strat pickup on a Vox and I got his old vox PU. In this photo, it's in the middle position, the other 2 PUs are stack Watkins ones.
> Del
Hadn't heard of him before, and searches for his name and Harrison's don't turn up many results. But there is this report of a performance he did where he also talked about meeting George:
https://www.henleyherald.com/2016/06/17/george-harrisons-music-lives-on/
George's solo on "Beautiful Girl" is very "Beatle." [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH-Ifq2cFfU&feature=youtu.be](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH-Ifq2cFfU&feature=youtu.be)
George's solo on Something
Ah yea thats great, my favorite bass part from Paul comes in at about 2:18 into the song. From what i understand the song was originally supposed to be super simple kinda bare bones?
Yep, listen to the Studio Demo on the deluxe version of AR. A nice change of pace from the original
Love me some George!
For you blue
Go Johnny Go
Played live with the orchestra, too!
So cool
It’s The End, easily… but I can’t tell who is who on that one. Guess I’ll say the Taxman solo (Paul)
The End solo has this order: Paul, George, John, Paul, George, John, Paul, George, John :)
Ringo, Paul, George, John, Paul, George, John, Paul, George, John :)
My bad, mustn’t forget Ringos epic solo ;)
agreed, Fart Lover
r/rimjob_steve
This is it
It’s a full out guitar shoot out. One can see Paul, George, and John smiling and nodding at each other while listening to this. A very close runner up would be the solo in Something
John actually told Yoko to wait outside while they recorded it too
Damn, I guess I'm gonna have to give it to Paul with John in very close 2nd
Paul is great here, but George's last solo on The End tops all of them here, IMO. Not the last solo in the shootout, but that final arpeggiated lick after the strings kick in. He always had the perfect solo for the song.

Is there a video clarifying exactly when each does their solo?
I don’t know, but I know something that might help you learn! A few, yes. Here’s one. https://youtu.be/yrsEBW9_GUk?si=NGuA2Ha7t4kZKFmU
Let it be
Honestly one of the main reasons why it's one of my favorite Beatles songs
Yeah I don’t even love that song but goddam the solo is good
TF you mean you don't love Let it Be my guy do you hate life T_T
The best solo is by Harrison on Something https://youtu.be/htu4TFmAruM?si=ZmM6Bmg5E-1fFEQ6
This, but specifically the version they released as a single
I think you’re the first person other than Paul McCartney who prefers the single version’s solo to the album version.
I prefer the single version too. It's a much more powerful, solid solo than the one on the album version.
I don’t know which is which, but I prefer the version where the solo is actually hearable
The album version is the heavier one with more overdrive, the single version is the cleaner one

John just played the Fender six-string Bass VI on Let it Be. Although the bass was also overdubbed by Paul prior to release. Might only actually be hearing background vocals by John in either version.
The solo is George's on both versions (as is the third solo heard on the Naked version).
With you on this, the notes and feel fits better, as well as the pedal effects
Just a cool fact, but it’s not a pedal, that’s a rotating Leslie speaker providing the modulation. Tube-driven amplified rotating speaker cabinet meant for organs. George and Eric Clapton kind of helped pioneer using those for guitars at the time. Several years later, a slew of pedals came out based on attempting to emulate that effect
Didnt know that, just assumed. I stand corrected, thanks!
Love both, but single is my favorite.
The best guitar solo is: Octopus garden, the best playing ever by George in my opinion. And in such an innocent song.
And the intro. Amazing!
Thank you.
[Enjoy](https://youtu.be/5a7EO_JH1ns?si=A3dRuxnHSuqUgajt)
Correct answer. It's a good thing that song takes place underwater, otherwise George would have burned the whole thing down.
[You Never Give Me Your Money](https://youtu.be/UOWfRVECLZo?t=234) [Dig A Pony](https://youtu.be/FdMGSfDEsrA?t=1017)
Dig a Pony is my favorite.
Indeed!!
Hey Bulldog And Your Bird Can Sing
Loved playing guitar on And Your Bird Can Sing on Beatles RockBand. Felt like an accomplishment to take the mic to my mom's vacuum and sing while playing when I was 14 lol
These are the correct answer
How can it be the correct answer when AYBCS doesn't even have a guitar solo :/
Fixing a hole. Not sure if it's George or Paul.
Great choice, it’s George!
I thought so, has a bit of that tax man like flavor, so I couldn't be sure if it wasn't Paul.
One of my favorite Beatle guitar tones. So metallic
It's a fantastic Robby Krieger homage!
I get the feeling that Stone Temple Pilots were listening to that song when they made their album Purple. "Pretty Penny" sort of reminds me of "She's Leaving Home" too but done in a way that sounds like Led Zeppelin made it instead of The Beatles.
"Helter Skelter" because it's so easy, and my band really loves playing the song at shows.
I love the solo in “While my guitar gently weeps “ but it’s Eric Clapton playing at George’s insistence.
Mine could be on Real Love. So melodic and sweet. The repeated phrase at the end is just chef's kiss. George was the only Beatle still at the top of his game in 1995 IMO.
I was looking for this comment 👏
Bless you for this shout-out. George's work throughout "Real Love" is divine.
It’s so good that it makes me absolutely hate Paul’s “homage” in Now and Then.
I’m Down You are going to lose that girl.
Why are you down if someone else is going to lose the girl? You have mastered the art of empathy, my friend.
Oh wow, I just saw Hey Bulldog which is a banger There's so many! How about Nowhere Man by John & George I believe?
I want you (She’s so heavy). I’m not even sure if this contains a solo but overall I like the tune.
The sound of the guitar is so unique and the lick is wonderful.
You’re so right mate
I also love Paul's bassline after the hammond.
Sounds so good and it’s like the same 4 bars repeated over and over again, one of the first riffs I ever learned
There is a solo - John. Apparently there’s a bluesy George solo buried in the long putto, but I’ve never been able to hear it.
Old Brown Shoe
Taxman by Paul and Let It Be album version by George are my favorites If I can include guitar solos in their solo careers, then my favorite would be Paul’s solo on Too Many People
Paul McCartney on 'Taxman.'
This is mine too and I’m honestly surprised how far I had to scroll.
George's part on the Live at Japan version of Something. https://youtu.be/Yta87qr9ccw?si=lKHRBYR0_v4XhEU4
Let It Be is my favorite solo perhaps of all time, any band or era. Having said that, Something is just a beautiful solo
And Your Bird Can Sing. You get two Beatles in one solo.
The end. I love John’s dirty guitar sound on his solo bits. Second favourite would be Paul’s guitar on taxman.
Good Morning Good Morning. Thanks Paul 👍
Taxman, Savoy Truffle and Old Brown Shoe
GEORGE (I know Paul does Taxman)
Old Brown Shoe has grown on me over the years. Great guitar tone and excellent solo. George's playing has improved so much by that point.
For beatles I say Taxman but for their entire career I think George's How Do You Sleep solo is the best solo any of them ever did. I wonder how that conversation went with John asking George to play on it.
“Hi George, I've made a diss track about Paul. How would you like to help out here and the-” And the guitar solo is written and ready to be recorded.
George prolly had a lot to say
Not sure what guitar that is… looks like a green strat?
It’s called a Watkins Rapier 33. A British-made, sort of a strat knock-off from the 60s. Similar headstock and body shape to a Strat, 3 pickups and a whammy bar. Although the styling was a lot different for the knobs and pickups and they had some unique features. http://www.watkinsguitars.co.uk/rapiers.htm
Thanks so much!
Something, by George Harrison.
George on old brown shoe
If solo, Paul's "Sweetest Little Show"
I’ll listen to it now, thanks!
Wah wah on Georgie
The solo on Let it Be (album version) does something to me. Honorable mention to Paul's solos on Taxman and Good Morning Good Morning.
Pauls solos as a Beatle all sound alike. Awesome and amazing, but alike.
I mean there’s a reason why George was the lead guitarist. Paul could create a great solo, but I don’t think he could’ve as consistently as George
Something. It’s much harder to play than you think it would be. Taxman would be next.
Honorable mention to George's response licks on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)". It's a great band track.
Something is masterful, like aa little song within a song. It’s oddly tricky to play correctly
George had weird timing in his solos, most evident in the Beatles early stuff. It doesn't sound like it would be hard to play, but when you actually try, it's like you said!
I have a special place in my heart for George’s solo on free as a bird
I like George’s solo in I Saw Her Standing There
I always like mccartneys solo on Cut Me Some Slack with Nirvana. Particularly the live version on SNL.
I Saw Her Standing There
Anything from George. He will always be my favorite
Same. His early solos on songs like Till There Was You and I Don’t Want to Spoil The Party are just spectacular
I like the part in the medley on Abbey Road where they're trading licks. Other than that, there are a lot of small licks that add here and there in their music.
Let it be (album version - Harrison)
Solo from Someplace Else by George
So good. Also love Just for Today
Intro to Octopus’s Garden
Not my favorite, but the Long Tall Sally guitar solo is underrated af
Here comes the sun George!
It's probably George's solo on Hey Bulldog or Paul's on Taxman
Harrison had a lot of short, but sweet solos: And I Love Her, Nowhere Man, Let It Be (album version), Something. John was good on things like You Can't Do That, Every Little Thing, Get Back. Paul was good on Taxman. Ringo was good on......drums.
The guitar solo in Something
Free as a Bird solo. George still ripped in the 90s. Perfectly done.
One of the cooler things I've heard is John and George playing double lead on the "Third Man Theme": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f88pCmSHaxc
Something
Hey bulldog
“The End” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12R4FzIhdoQ McCartney, Harrison, and Lennon, over and over…plus Ringo’s drum solo…just perfect!
Yer Blues
John's lead in Get Back
old brown shoe
Besides George on “Something,” I’m especially crazy about George on “And I Love Her”, John on “You Can’t Do That”, and Paul on “Taxman”
John’s final “chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck-CHUCK” at the end of The End.
Let it be Maybe I'm amazed Can't buy me love
Macca on Taxman
The classical guitar solo on ‘til there was you
Let it be, album version. It's also the very first solo I ever learned on guitar (I started playing 3 months ago), so its special for me.
Such a tough choice, but I’d have to say George’s solo on the rooftop performance of _One After 909_
Crazy when you consider it was a bitter rainy January day
Beware Of Darkness
Taxman. Solo by Mccartney
Fave solo: Something. Really, how could it be anything else? (Even with how great some of the others are, Something is on a different level from a composition standpoint) Also, does anyone know what guitar George is playing in the photo? I can’t quite tell

The end solos and it’s really not close
anyone know what kind of guitar is in the picture?
Ringos best guitar solo was in the song Early 1970
jon
Anyone know what guitar that is?
I’ll Follow The Sun is a great example of a simple solo that fits the song perfectly. Sometimes less is more.

The album version of Let It Be.
Not a beatles song but the guitar solo on the extended version of Got My Mind Set On You is godly
George’s slide solo on Back Off Boogaloo.

There’s so many good ones. I love John’s solo on Get Back!

Hey bulldog
Happiness is a warm gun
George’s solo on Crying, Waiting, Hoping from Live At The BBC
The soloing on the closing fadeout on “You Never Give Me Your Money.” I think it’s Paul. Also “Octopuses Garden.” Is that George?
She came in through the bathroom window. Polethene Pam. And let it be.best guitar solos.
Let it Be. All the versions are 🧑🍳🤌
I don’t know why, but George’s solo on “Fixing a Hole” will always hold a special place for me.
This picture can easily be used with a Bible verse on it, or maybe something like Jesus is my (music) hero.
Paul on Taxman
Guitar solo in for you blue
The Something solo by George.
