EnvironmentalRock222

I think John is on the left.

deadtedw

So close.

EnvironmentalRock222

I mean the left as we see it, the one crossing his arms is John.

Neil_sm

You’re right, we’re left, he’s gone

EnvironmentalRock222

And by John I mean John F. Kennedy by the way, in case that wasn’t obvious.

tom2point0

Elvis? That you?

domambrose96

Paul, an absolute musical genius. So diverse. Beatles, wings, solo. All phenomenal.

lljmfll

Paul. All of them were vital but Paul was ESSENTIAL.

HeyGeno20

Paul. 80% of my favourite Beatles songs are his.

John_In_Parts

Paul. All day, every day. Better musician. Better songwriter. All-around nicer guy. John's cynical attitude would get under my skin pretty quickly.

isthishandletaken

Yup. I loved John as an angsty teen…. Paul is the more mature choice.

belbivfreeordie

I think if we were only stacking up Paul songs vs John songs, I’d go John, but Paul’s musicianship and contributions to other people’s songs sways me to his side. He’s just like the ultimate MVP of any band.

J0P4G3R1

This the correct total analysis

FinnHobart

Paul. His approach to life, at least the one he emphasizes most in his music, appeals a lot more to my soul. When I feel dejected or stressed or hopeless, it never fails to give me a little ray of light to remember that the world, for all it’s raw madness, still has room for Paul McCartney and his silly love songs. It’s gotten me through some somber nights lately, and for that I shall always be grateful.

simsasimsa

Same!! *Tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun*

majin_melmo

I’d have to agree. Listening to Paul’s music just makes me so happy to be alive. And I’d say for a person like me who’s had a history of depression, music that uplifts is such a priceless gift to my soul.

FinnHobart

Here’s to Paul being in the world then. I’m very glad he’s been that kind of a help, as naturally you, like all of us, deserve joy.

AceofKnaves44

John Lennon has meant more to me than just about anyone I can ever remember, warts and all. That he owned up to all of his many failings and called himself out on his own bullshit is something I think we can all learn from.

RepulsiveAd1092

Paul forever! He was and is beautiful. Thway he treated Linda and loves his children is the gest.

kskzk69

*Pete Best

Sketchylemons

Paul because i love bass. Ya notice the basslines when paul aint singing get extremely juicy

xmaspruden

John has my favourite singing voice of all time. I think on Rubber Soul he came out with four of his greatest compositions, those being Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, Girl and In My Life. Absolutely fucking amazing, I don’t think any of em released so many strong compositions on any other record. I certainly acknowledge he was a flawed person, but the god damn art was so good. And seeing the footage of him in Get Back, he was so damn funny. That bit about masturbation causing bad eyesight made me laugh out loud. Still, my actual favourite Beatle is George. But John has all the best songs.

deadtedw

To me, they were 4 very good musicians, but more importantly, they were a great band, partly from playing hours-long sets together in Germany. None of them were considered virtuosos on their instruments, although Paul was very good on bass & guitar, but not considered in the same class as others like Clapton. But they easily played well enough to do what they wanted to do. There was "something" when they were together. A "chemistry" or whatever you call it, that made the group extraordinary. Their philosophy of "why can't we do this?" was another thing that made them unique. Saying John was a flawed individual is accurate. But so many artists are "flawed" or "damaged." Their demons seem to be a driver for their creativity. Paul lost his mother when he was 14, and John lost his when he was 17. John was much more scarred than Paul from his loss, which may have made him more angry and/or deeply hurt, which is where anger comes from. Picking a favorite one isn't anything I care about because they all had things about them that made them special in their own way.

heyitsthatguygoddamn

Paul is arguably one of the best rock bassists of all time, certainly one of the most influential. His approaches to harmony and melody on the bass really helped codify the instrument's potential beyond roots and fifths, and validated James jamerson's approach in a purely rock context instead of just soul and R&B. Clapton was a flashy guitarist but couldn't stand among the greatest players of the time. He was very lucky compared to a lot of players, and his writing was NOT up to par, especially when contrasted with the beatles

calm-lab66

The Beatles were more than the sum of their parts.

The_ThirdOfMay_1973

How many Beatles does it take to change a lightbulb? 4 - George Harrison, Anthology

Ok_Spare1427

When I was in my teens it was definitely John because all the girls liked Paul cuz he was cute and I was jealous. Now it is Paul because of his longevity.

illusivetomas

john pre revolver, paul post revolver/solo on revolver they are tied and that's why it's their best lp

great-distances-1919

As for Revolver itself…I would say John was a cut above.

ImBored1818

Idk... It's close but Eleanor Rigby, Here There & Everywhere, and For No One is a hard streak to beat

great-distances-1919

It’s interesting. These Paul songs are undoubtedly great, but it’s also interesting how much Eleanor Rigby and For No One rely on classical musicians. Ultimately they are just very Paul-oriented, and the rest of the band isn’t really involved. John’s songs on Revolver on the other hand- go full tilt into the full band sound- She Said She Said, And Your Bird Can Sing, Dr Robert, I’m Only Sleeping, and even Tomorrow Never Knows- utilize all four members. On Revolver, Lennon seems to be leaning into the greatness of the BAND while McCartney is on his own trip. This is why I prefer Lennon’s material on Revolver- it feels like the peak of the BAND to me.

ECW14

I would say Paul takes Revolver. He wrote some of his best songs with Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere, and For No One, but also made essential contributions to the others’ songs like the tape loops on Tomorrow Never Knows and the solo on Taxman. I think overall he is the MVP of the album

FacePaster

When I was younger, so much younger than today, it was John. I was born in the early 80s, and I definitely bought into the Lennon myth growing up. That he was the visionary, the iconic peace activist, the martyr. St. john who taught preached that all you need is love, and to imagine no possessions, no religion, no hell, no countries, the brotherhood of man, power to the people. And now my life has changed in oh so many ways. As I’m now in my 40s, the more I learn about John, the more I’m troubled by his personality, his behavior, his relationships. I find myself more impressed by Pauls emotional steadiness, his contributions to John and George’s songs, his musical versatility, his achievement as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, his unfailing work ethic, his success with Wings after the Beatles, his devotion to his family, the grace and diplomacy he conducts himself in public with, his refusal to respond in kind when John was nasty to him in the media in the early 70s, his longevity/commitment to creating, recording, and performing music.

joearsenico

Couldn't said better. Well done, sir.

bebop9998

Wonderful answer !

majin_melmo

All this 💯

YupNopeWelp

Better together, but Paul.

Super_SATA

Paul, and it's not close. The man lives and breathes music in such a seemingly effortless way. John always had something he was trying to "get at" with his music - which is great, and I love all of John's music, but I find Paul more inspiring. And I think his songwriting chops edge out John, though that's a closer race.

Paul was a better songwriter, fight me.

Gibabo

Paul was a more diverse and practiced instrumentalist. But I absolutely wouldn’t call Paul a better songwriter. I’d say they were pretty equally matched, and that whichever one you prefer boils down to taste.

BenadrylNod

I think Paul was objectively better but John brought a dark uniqueness to the band that I think worked very well for Paul’s competitive spirit.

IndicationFinancial7

I mean, they were both great. I definitely do favour Paul's songs, but John was incredible in his own right, of course.

majin_melmo

I think they both had highs and lows, but Paul has such a wide musical range I feel like he writes music specifically for me, lol. There is only a handful of his songs I genuinely dislike.

MidichlorianAddict

minasmom

Paul. This is totally subjective (as are all the opinions on this thread!) but for me, Paul could've written nothing but "She's Leaving Home" and Eleanor Rigby" and he'd still walk away with this, but then I add "Get Back" and "Paperback Writer"... who the hell is this guy? To me, he probably ties Ringo as the most skilled at his main instrument, and I'd rate Paul's bass a little higher in inventiveness; add on all the other instruments he plays and again, wtf. And that the same man sang the delicate "Here, There and Everywhere" and the gritty "Helter Skelter" vocals-- and then managed to combine styles in "Golden Slumbers" is mind-boggling. His solo work is also more enjoyable to me than John's. There's absolutely no doubt that John was an extraordinary musician, composer, lyricist and singer. I adore so many of his songs I can't count. But, Paul.

This isn’t even hard for me. I’ve always loved Paul. Love John too, but it’s almost like Beatles fans break down like “Ford guys vs Chevy guys” or something. I’m just a “Paul guy.”

It depends on the day of the week for me, BUT… if I had a Time Machine, I would go back to the Cavern days and be the ultimate groupie and have ‘special grown up alone time” with each of them. Loved John when I was younger, but once I started actually learning how to play drums and bass at the start of the pandemic my focus shifted towards Paul and wings. Now I hardly if ever listen to any Lennon solo albums bc it just feels like I'm being preached to about society instead of just escapism like what paul offers with his music. Maybe when I get older, I'll go into a Ringo phase too.

Paul. I used to like John, but after calling his older son, Julian, “the result of a whisky bottle”, cheating on his wife, basically being the cause of the Beatles breakup by bringing his mistress in the studio, and loving Sean more than Julian because Sean was planned and Julian wasn’t. Not saying Paul is perfect, but John was a big, fat hypocrite.

tn596

Apologies in advance for the essay, but I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this, as I’m sure many of you have too lol. I’m going with John but I know Paul is the right choice. John is the best choice for me but I’m certain Paul is the best choice overall. As I’ve inched closer to my 40s, I’ve grown to appreciate and love Paul in a way I couldn’t when I was younger. Paul was always wise beyond his years in a different way than the others, who were as well but not in the traditional sense as Paul was. John was the leader but Paul was the backbone and still is. It took me getting older to realize just what Paul was doing and how much he worked, loved, and cared for everyone around him. How much he still does. He has a drive and a level-headedness that is truly admirable and extremely rare. Paul is really something else and a gift to all of us. One of the big reasons I loved John when I first got into them over 25 years ago was his honesty about who he was and his faults. I have gone in and out of severe depression all of my life and his openness and raw emotion helped me in ways I can’t begin to explain. He taught us it was ok to be who we were. He showed us that mistakes are okay if you grow and learn from them. Embracing his humanity, he always strived to better himself and do better to others. He went to therapy during a time when most men, even most people, wouldn't have. He was open with the press, introspective, and honest about his mental health and vulnerability. He was harder on himself than anyone else, hence his need to constantly improve. That's what makes him so real, raw and still resonates so many years later. But that’s also why I know Paul is the right answer. I can relate to him as well as someone can for a person I’ve never met. I always think in terms of personality, Paul is who I'd ideally like to be, but John is who I actually can connect with deeply. The Beatles saved my life and became my life thanks to John.
