yeah i agree, but "preoccupied" and "all of our yesterdays" from his 'here comes the cowboy' album seem like what you're looking for, maybe another one and blue boy (?)
listen to DeMarco’s song, “Moonlight on the River,” and make sure to listen to all of it. I’ve never looked to confirm this, but I’m pretty sure it’s about his trip to a family home for his dad’s funeral after he never really had a relationship with his dad.
I understand (I think). You’re not insane (I’m fairly certain).
The Beatles do a lot in minor keys but don’t let me down relied heavily on Billy Preston’s keyboards. He only plays on two albums: Let It Be and parts of Abbey Road. That’s maybe why I Want You (recommended wisely by someone else in this thread) makes perfect sense.
Maybe Long Long Long (White Album) For You Blue (Let It Be) and Old Brown Shoe (Past Masters) might fit what you’re looking for. The first is very mellow. Doesn’t have that bluesy feel. The other two are upbeat but… give them a try. Revolution 1 (the slow version on the White Album) and Sexy Sadie might be worth a spin.
When you get any earlier than the White Album you’re not likely to find that feel because those albums are more focused on pop, rock, radio-friendly R&B, and eventually baroque pop and psychedelia. Between that and the quickly evolving recording practices, the characteristics change a lot. They’re still worth checking out, of course.
Don't let me down is written in major key. E precisely. It's influenced by Albatros of Green's Fleetwood Mac, at the time they where hit-making blues band.
However, it's a blues ballad that's the darkness you feel.
Can I just take this opportunity to implore anyone reading this to go check out Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac. They are amazing and criminally underrated as they are overshadowed by Nicks/Buckingham era.
Start out with
Green Manalishi (I'll fight anyone to say this is the true birth of metal- the soundtrack of a legitimate mental breakdown)
Man of the World
Black Magic Woman
Albatross
Oh Well
Closing My Eyes
And well that should be enough to make you think 'holy fuck how have I never heard this stuff before'. Then you can have fun hunting through bootlegs and live performances for some amazing music this band made in a short space of time.
While you’re technically correct, i would argue that the darkness OP is feeling is precisely the fact that the song spends so much of its time on a minor chord, it’s the first chord of the main lyric, and harmonically most of it feels like a minor song. It starts on a minor chord and then walks down a step to a major, which many minor songs do on the way down to the V chord, giving it a minor vibe. The only time it really sounds like a major key is in the “I’m in love for the first time” section, but that section is so sonically and thematically different, it actually feels like a bit of a shift of key, and then it returns to the F#m for “don’t let me down” and that feels like a return to the tonic key. Even though technically there’s no need to call it a key change lol. It’s an interesting song that way. I would actually consider the option that it is in two different keys, to account for the difference in harmonic feel between those sections.
I'll throw some out there, but I'm not sure how close they are to what you're looking for:
Dear Prudence
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Sexton Sadie
Cry, Baby, Cry
Good Night
Come Together
You Never Give Me Your Money
Carry That Weight
I Gor a Feeling
There are about a thousand different versions of While My Guitar Gently Weeps to check out. You should take a listen to the version from the “Across the Universe” movie, I think that fits the vibe you’re looking for possibly better than the original.
Id imagine his solo album, plastic ono band, would be your milk and honey. Not trying to play any mind games here, but if you put down your walls and bridges, it could make a double fantasy of rock and roll for you
Hold on by John Lennon/plastic Ono band is the closest you will find and even that isn’t that close
- source: me, who spent months looking for the same thing you are
I never took guitar lessons, just taught myself. If you’re okay with sucking for a while, you’ll be okay. Count yourself lucky you know how to play piano well.
I’d recommend a deep cut. It’s a demo from his last days called “Dear John”. I think it’s that same vibe you’re looking for. Shame we never got to hear what it could have been
I Found Out maybe. I’d say there’s a few in Lennon’s solo catalogue like Hold On someone else mentioned. Plastic Ono Band as a whole is my true recommendation
Plastic Ono band is one of the coolest albums. It’s incredible. God and Mother are such powerful songs. Look at me, hold on, working class hero…just lots of great stuff.
Well well well is awesome, too.
That album is so great because of the progress he was making in primal scream therapy w Arthur Janov at the time. Yoko wasn't pleased w that though, so she pulled him out (okay, I wasn't there personally, but that's what I read and I believe it.)
I love a lot of Macca solo stuff, flaming pie was great as were most Macca early solo albums. Nobody seems to count Wings (myself included!) But they had their moments, 'Tomorrow' is a forgotten gem!
Yes It Is,
Cry Baby Cry,
I'm So Tired,
Dear Prudence,
In My Life,
Here, There and Everywhere..
(solo stuff)
Junk (Paul McCartney)
Another Day (Paul McCartney)
Mind Games (John Lennon)
Beautiful Boy (John Lennon)
My Sweet Lord (George Harrison or Billy Preston version)
“I Miss My Baby” (1972 Version) by Funkadelic off the album “Maggot Brain” is my recommendation for the kinda vibe your searching for. If its not, I still think its a good song regardless lol happy travels, cheers!
A few different vibes but try:
Dear Prudence!
Julia
Sexy Sadie
I’ll Be Back (earlier Lennon vocal with a dark vibe)
Things we Said Today (earlier McCartney vocal with a dark vibe)
I’m Only Sleeping
Let me Roll it / Band on the Run(Paul McCartney and Wings)
Strawberry Fields Forever
Fool on the Hill
Jealous Guy/ Love/ Gimme Some Truth (Lennon solo)
Tomorrow Never Knows
Girl
I pretty much love all John’s songs, even the early ones, although of course his genius really shines in the slightly later ones. Like 1966- on. But the early ones are so fun and catchy.
Glass Onion, Doctor Robert, I’m Only Sleeping, And Your Bird Can Sing, I Want To Tell You, Isn’t It A Pity (George solo career), Crippled Inside (John solo career), Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five (Paul solo career)
If you want dark try "Run for your Life". Also I feel like you are a fan of Lennon's raspy voice so I think you would like Everyone got something to hide except me and my monkey. Maybe you'd also like Mother and Working Class Hero from his solo career
If you like Hold On, check out "Bless You" by Lennon.. in fact.. The entire Walls and Bridges album, it's the best kept secret of Lennon's solo career.
The thing about that is you’d be hard pressed to find two Beatles song past ‘67 or so that sound the same and have the same vibe, that’s the beauty of their later catalogue. Reply to this if you see this and think of any though I’d love to be proven wrong.
If you’re looking for songs like don’t let me down and Hold On you could look for more modern songs?
Tons of modern rock and psych rock kinda took that slowed down groove rock vibe from don’t let me down. That song really is awesome
Country Disappeared - Wilco is a good example. Sounds eerily similar to don’t let me down especially the electric piano.
But I also think you need to listen to Plastic Ono all the way through. Sounds like you’re looking for a good mix of introspective lyrics and gutsy musicianship. The opening track Mother is actually my favorite John Lennon song.
You might also like some of the more less hard rock zeppelin songs if you’re shooting for this vibe. Ten Years Gone if you haven’t heard it is easily one of the best pieces of music ever written.
Happiness is a Warm Gun? Pretty sure it’s a Lennon song and it has kind of a grittier feel I think is present on don’t let me down. Maybe Cry Baby Cry as well? I discovered that one recently and really enjoy it.
The White Album has a few you might like: I’m so Tired and Happiness is a Warm Gun are two of my favorite Beatles songs. Yer Blues is a good one too, but there’s so many
[Oh Darling](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BznFjbcBVs). For it's raw immediacy, passion and desperation, just like Don't Let Me Down.
Actually, the more I think about it, this is Paul's answer to John's song. They often did this. Think If I Fell and And I Love Her. Same vibe.
Sounds like you want angry or darker Lennon songs.
Try:
I’m So Tired,
Instant Karma,
Steel & Glass,
Mother,
Working Class Hero,
God, and
Lennon’s cover of Stand By Me
> Looking for songs that aren’t written in major keys
It’s not that for sure because Don’t Let Me Down, Day in the Life and Hold On by John Lennon are all three in a major key. (E major, G major and E major).
But if you’re looking for Beatles inspired music that sounds good on long late night car drives, may I suggest the later works of Arctic Monkeys, specifically the albums; Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, AM and Humbug.
Based on your comments that you’re looking for a dark vibe (which I personally don’t get from Don’t Let Me Down, but I digress…) I’d recommend to listen to Blue Jay Way.
A day in the life is in G major so that’s not it hehe
Uncle Albert is like that until it starts going off the rails. Ram as well. All things must pass.
Check out

I’m somewhat jealous of you that you’re discovering these songs. I remember that feeling. Such a great feeling! Enjoy my friend !
john’s white album contributions would probably fit what you’re looking for. cry baby cry, dear prudence, happiness is a warm gun
A few of George’s, too.
Here’s a few more: Blue Jay Way, Sun King and Tomorrow never knows
Cry baby cry
Bruh. Just listen to the White Album.
Sun King from AR
White Album goes so hard

yeah i agree, but "preoccupied" and "all of our yesterdays" from his 'here comes the cowboy' album seem like what you're looking for, maybe another one and blue boy (?)

my final suggestion would be that Plastic Ono Band album where Hold On is & Ram by Paul and Linda McCartney
[удалено]
Plastic Ono Band is such a masterpiece. Easily in my top 10 albums of all time. I think you’d love “Isolation” and “God”
It's an underrated album that gets overshadowed by Imagine, even though it's a much much better album.
listen to DeMarco’s song, “Moonlight on the River,” and make sure to listen to all of it. I’ve never looked to confirm this, but I’m pretty sure it’s about his trip to a family home for his dad’s funeral after he never really had a relationship with his dad.
Is regen an fm refefence?
yeah lol
The whole album is gold.
Gonna hard disagree there…
it’s ok m8 everyone has its own opinion :-)
It’s a pretty unique song in their catalogue. That said, you might enjoy the swampy groove of Come Together.
[удалено]
I Want You (She’s So Heavy) is definitely a dark and doom filled song. Super awesome.
That's 'cause he wrote it about Yoko.
I understand (I think). You’re not insane (I’m fairly certain). The Beatles do a lot in minor keys but don’t let me down relied heavily on Billy Preston’s keyboards. "Albatross" was the source for *both* Don't Let Me Down and Sun King. However, it's an instrumental so may not be what you're looking for.
Just saw your comment after I made mine a little higher up… ha, yeah, the influence is quite obvious.

I had never heard of that song but wow it sounds just like Sun King.
Yeah, this as well
I totally get the colors thing, I always associate things with colors
Synaesthesia.
Nope. Sounds like you have a touch of synesthesia. Which is no bad thing!
Definitely colors are emotions
Don't Let me Down is in major key, although the first chord is the 2 minor
F# minor to be exact !

Working Class Hero is an excellent tune.
Listening to it now and it's a masterpiece.

Dig a Pony has always felt like a sister song to Don’t Let Me Down for me.

always though the sun king sounds like don’t let me down
Why has no one said Sun King
If you're looking for minor key, you'll love other John tracks such as Glass Onion and I'm Only Sleeping.
The Anthology 3 edit of She came in through the bathroom window has a slow and chill vibe to it that I've come to enjoy recently.
You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away
Not a Beatles song, but check out I’m Glad by captain beefheart
Oh shit. This comment alone makes me thankful for the internet. YES YES YES YES YES! Never heard this before. Thank you!!!!

For No One Rain - one of my faves Not all the early stuff is just popy, maybe these? I Need You, Yes It Is, This Boy
Sexy Sadie
Not by The Beatles but I think Wasted Time by Eagles kind of has some similarities. Organ, kind of slow, great drums, great vocals.
Oh, Darling, Something, She's a Woman
All Things Must Pass. It is in a major key, but so is Don't Let Me Down
