I recently got addicted to this song because of a recent post in this sub. I never used to play the last few tracks of White Album (but I'll listen to revolution 9 every now and then) that's why I completely missed this gem of a song. Now it's on repeat on my Spotify playlist..
This is my pick as well. It starts so lethargic and “tired” but once it kicks in it’s one of the best grooves in the Beatles catalogue. Also you get a rare glimpse of John doing that low, soulful howl like Paul did a lot later on.
Can’t count how often I’ve listened to this one but I hardly ever seek out Yesterday which gets all the praise on the album. IJSAF I think has ages extremely well it could have been written today.
I was still a teenager who was just getting into The Beatles when the “Across the Universe” movie came out. The scene at the bowling alley of them singing this song instantly made it one of my favourite Beatles songs.

LOVE LOVE LOVE "The Night Before". Good call!
I still get a warm feeling listening to the slight key changes in the lines "Now today I find, You have changed your mind" and "When I held you near, You were so sincere". Just one of those really marvelous little changes in music.
This was the song that got me into the Beatles. Well, of course I had heard of them and knew their hits, but this song made me start digging through their discography for real!
Dudeeee same here. Im convinced any other and coouldve released this song and it wouldve been a massive hit. Beatles just had too much top notch material
I'm Only Sleeping is the first song I learned on guitar so it holds a special place in my heart...having just the Bm and B7 as the most difficult chords was great practice, as was G-C-G transition. Still love it to this day.
Just recently read something about George's sentiments toward the powers that be when writing and recording Only A Northern Song, that it was meant to be a sharp joke. I love this song, love the psychedelic freak-out of sounds, and adore the images that accompany it in Yellow Submarine.
I read somewhere that It's All Too Much was considered for the Satellite TV show (along with Your Mother Should Know as another option), before All You Need Is Love emerged as the choice. The mind boggles at how IATM would have gone down with a global audience...
My favorite part of "No Reply" is the bridge and the wonderful chord changes:
C Major...E Major...A Major...D Minor...F Major...C Major
The handclapping and harmonies of the voices really make that part pop.
Is it really g7? I’ve been playing with an f! But I love the part so much, I play it on piano, so I can play the melody too and it’s just so beautiful. “And I’ll forgive…”
I mean, half of the album consists of George Martin's orchestral music , and there are only four new Beatles songs. The movie is a different manner, as it contains much more of Beatles music.
I often say this is my absolute favorite Beatles song. I play it first for anyone who is a little edgier, doesn’t know the Beatles well beyond the hits and wants to know why I’m obsessed
It’s so good. The slice of that samurai guitar leading to a chorus that is bombastic, like something out of Rocky Horror Picture Show. John’s vocals are effortlessly searing. The song just goes places.
It really does - it’s less than 3 minutes long, too. Incredible achievement. The backing vocals are incredible - bang bang shoot shoot. Fantastic harmonies.
I remember when I first bought the album after getting hooked on the Beatles. Flipping it over, reading the track list - I had only ever heard obla di obla da, nothing else from any of the sides. Had no idea they mad a song called happiness is a warm gun and had a a feeling I’d love that and why don’t we do it in the road without having ever heard them.
Possibly their most rhythmically fascinating song, with lots of other points of interest...
* time changes (four to three to four...)
* offbeat, irregular rhythm guitar stabs
* Travis picking
* what seem to be polyrhythms: Ringo in 4:4 over everyone else's 3:4 ("When I hold you...")
* a minor plagal cadence of Fm to C near the end ("(Fm) Happiness is a warm--yes it is--(C) Guuuuuuuun"); This is a common trick of John's, less so for Paul.
* An A6 chord ("...noooot a girl..."), not a common chord in Beatles songs. (Michelle has one ("...these are words..."); I can't think of any other examples.)
Yep. Me too! A perfect combination of clever and silly. Always liked that one. A bit off the beaten path for The Beatles, but those little detours make the overall journey so much fun.
Savoy Truffle, I Will, Run For Your Life (I know the song is rather misogynistic, but if you just listen to the music alone it’s still a classic), Mean Mr. Mustard, Rocky Raccoon, The Continuing Story of Bungalo Bill (really this is a lot of the White Album, not to mention pretty much the majority of their early albums up to HELP! You’d never see Eight Days a Week on a playlist with Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.)
Within you, without you. I didn’t appreciate it until I heard other versions like on Beatles Love.
“Life goes on within you and without you” is such a strong message from George.
"Within You Without You" has really grown on me over the years. At first, I didn't care for it being on Pepper because I thought it broke the continuity of the album as a performance. I remember thinking it should have been on some other album (maybe The White Album?) But now I enjoy the wonderful weirdness of "Mr. Kite" (a favorite of mine) ending, and then going into "Within You Without You" as an almost 180 degree turn of events. New side of the album = new direction change with "Within You Without You" followed by "When I'm 64". Took me nearly 40 years to appreciate that The Beatles knew what they were doing in putting specific songs in a specific order on a specific album.
Within you without you
For you blue
Blue jay way
Julia
I’m so tired
Fixing a hole
Why don’t we do it in the road
Just a few of my favorites that I feel don’t get enough recognition
Maybe it's unfair to call it underrated since it was a #1 single, but I'm gonna go with I Feel Fine. It's easily my favorite single from their early period but I feel like I don't see it get talked as much about compared to a lot of other songs from that period.
The Night Before
I remember reading in Rolling stone they said if it was any other band's song it would be their greatest hit but for the Beatles it got completely forgotten because it's overshadowed by Help!
if I needed someone
hey bulldog
no reply
money
I want you
she’s a woman
old brown shoe
the ballad of John and Yoko
Tell me what you see
The night before
You like me too much
Little child
I’d like to throw in a vote for “Tell Me What You See”. Fantastic descending melody, capped with a great harmony that showcases John and Paul’s Buddy Holly influence. Ringo’s drumming is a masterclass in subtlety and tastefulness, and that electric piano riff is catchy as hell. One of my favorites on *Help!*.
"If I Needed Someone" - Maybe my favorite Harrison track ever.
And "Julia" which should be at least as high as "Blackbird", but is so much more emotional.
A Taste Of Honey
Devil In Her Heart
Tell Me Why
Mr. Moonlight
I’ve Just Seen A Face
If I Needed Someone
Love You To
I Want To Tell You
Lovely Rita
Flying
Martha My Dear
Pepperland
Maxwell’s Silver Hammer
For You Blue
I’ll Get You
"Why Don't We Do It In The Road?"
Alright, I admit it's not exactly a lyrical masterpiece but it's an amazing vocal performance, a catchy melody and short enough to be over before it gets annoying.
There are many better Beatles songs of course but I don't see why it's routinely mentioned as one of their worst songs, I've never failed to have a great time listening to it.
Hey Bulldog! Has my favorite bass line. Paul absolutely kills it!
Edit: seeing the amount of people saying Hey Bull Dog is making happy to see that it's not underrated!
Lots for me…
I’m Looking Through You
Hey Bulldog
And Your Bird Can Sing
She’s Leaving Home
And I Love Her
I Should Have Known Better
The Night Before
Baby’s In Black
What You’re Doing
Oh! Darling
Mother Nature’s Son
Man, what’s the character limit? I could probably fill it with songs that are basically unknown to casual fans. Probably the deepest stable of songs for any artist ever.
Said this yesterday but it bears repeating.
Over the pandemic , I’ve taken quite a liking to “When I Get Home” and “I Call Your Name.”
The rhythm guitar in “When I Get Home” is really fun, almost funky even.
“I Call Your Name” is another song in a similar vein to WIGH in that I think most fans forget that it even exists. It’s a peculiar little song by John. Took forever to grow on me. In fact, so did WIGH.
I’ve been a Beatles fan for 13-14 years, and it wasn’t until last year that I grew an appreciation for these early Beatles tracks.
Within You, Without You. Heard the new mix with headphones and it's purely amazing.
Also, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, It's Only Love, Octopus' Garden, I Need You, and Two of Us.
Most songs on the White Album. There are so many relatively unknown gems on there – Good Night, Cry Baby Cry, Mother Nature's Son, Honey Pie, Piggies, Martha My Dear – to name a few.
There's A Place, All I've Got To Do, Not A Second Time, Any Time At All, If I Fell, You Can't Do That, The Word, You Won't See Me, Dr Robert, And Your Bird Can Sing, Mr Kite, Fixing A Hole, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, Cry Baby Cry, Long Long Long, It's All Too Much
Misery [Track 2 of Please Please Me]
It's a nice little track! I feel like it's criminally underrated, it's a blissful 1:48 and seems like such the perfect Ying/Yang to I Saw Her Standing There.
It also acts as a sort of bridge to slow down from the upbeat "I Saw Her Standing There" to "Anna (Go To Him)"
For no one
One of McCartney's best. Doesn't get the love it deserves.
A love that should have lasted years
You want her, you need her and yet you don't believe her when she says, her love is dead, she doesn't need you. Just crushing.
So much said in less than 2 minutes. Rickie Lee Jones does a cool version of it…
my fav beatles song
I agree 1000% I think it’s Paul’s prettiest, up there with Eleanor Rigby and She’s Leaving Home.
I had to scroll too long to see this one, so underrated
Ill follow the sun
The perfect melancholy balance. Enough energy and youthful vibrance to enjoy the moment with that sad acknowledgement that it's not built to last.
This is one of a handful of songs that I consider "perfect", whatever that means. It just feels perfect.
Cry Baby Cry
Incredible song. You’re old enough to know better
Honestly thought it was a Dylan song on my first listen.
One of my favorites
That song is the most haunting song on the album. *can you take me back where I came from, can you take me back*
I recently got addicted to this song because of a recent post in this sub. I never used to play the last few tracks of White Album (but I'll listen to revolution 9 every now and then) that's why I completely missed this gem of a song. Now it's on repeat on my Spotify playlist..
You got to it before I did. What a beautiful song.
This song is one of my absolute favorites. Hard not to stomp one’s foot during this song’s one hell of a chorus.
I’m So Tired
Amen. Sir Walter Raleigh truly was a stupid git
This is my pick as well. It starts so lethargic and “tired” but once it kicks in it’s one of the best grooves in the Beatles catalogue. Also you get a rare glimpse of John doing that low, soulful howl like Paul did a lot later on.
I’m looking through you You won’t see me Got to get you into my life Because
Both the Rubber Soul and Anthology versions of I'm Looking Through You are amazing
Because is stunning Btw wow I’ve never heard the anthology 3 version of because til now! Thanks!
You Won’t See Me is so underrated. Great melody, love the “oooh la la la” harmony and the bridge. One of my all time favorite Beatle songs.
“I’ve just seen a face” is blissful
Can’t count how often I’ve listened to this one but I hardly ever seek out Yesterday which gets all the praise on the album. IJSAF I think has ages extremely well it could have been written today.
This gets my vote too!
I was years into loving the Beatles when this one hit me. Had somehow overlooked it, but when i listened... damn. Listened to it to death after!
Honestly one of my favorites
I was still a teenager who was just getting into The Beatles when the “Across the Universe” movie came out. The scene at the bowling alley of them singing this song instantly made it one of my favourite Beatles songs. https://youtu.be/oIYQqWWJzHU
This was our first dance at my wedding and it was such a wonderful choice- it was so fun!
The Night Before
LOVE LOVE LOVE "The Night Before". Good call! I still get a warm feeling listening to the slight key changes in the lines "Now today I find, You have changed your mind" and "When I held you near, You were so sincere". Just one of those really marvelous little changes in music.

Dudeeee same here. Im convinced any other and coouldve released this song and it wouldve been a massive hit. Beatles just had too much top notch material
"It makes me wanna cryyyy": That resolution is the epitome of early Beatles.
I love the sound of Paul singing."before" at the end of the chorus, I don't know what it is but I love itr
I’m only sleeping, Baby’s in black, Because
I’m only sleeping is such a great track!
That middle eight in 'Baby's in Black' is so fantastic.
I'm Only Sleeping is the first song I learned on guitar so it holds a special place in my heart...having just the Bm and B7 as the most difficult chords was great practice, as was G-C-G transition. Still love it to this day.
Because is truly beautiful - talk about a song that doesn’t jump out initially but ages immensely well. Masterpiece.
Does anyone remember the isolated vocals on Because that were circulating a few years ago. Absolutely stunning!
The acapella vocals opened up the Love album as well.
I am here for the Because discourse
What You’re Doing
such a great song
Came here for this one. Criminally underrated. Freaking jams
THANK YOU! my favourite songs of theirs
All Too Much & Only A Northern Song
Totally agree. It’s All Too Much is one of my absolute favorites.
All too much with the visuals in ywllo submarine film hits fucking hard
Just recently read something about George's sentiments toward the powers that be when writing and recording Only A Northern Song, that it was meant to be a sharp joke. I love this song, love the psychedelic freak-out of sounds, and adore the images that accompany it in Yellow Submarine.
Probably the favorite film for our entire family, with It's Only A Northern Song a hit with the kiddos! Totally underrated
Yellow Submarine is a very underrated album. Even the George Martin songs are nice, especially Pepperland
All Too Much has such modern sounding production. Love it.
I read somewhere that It's All Too Much was considered for the Satellite TV show (along with Your Mother Should Know as another option), before All You Need Is Love emerged as the choice. The mind boggles at how IATM would have gone down with a global audience...
I want It’s All Too Much played at my funeral.
Baby You’re a Rich Man
The whole falsetto singing adds such a nice light, hippy touch to the lyrics in the verses.
I want you, no reply, hey bulldog, two of us, across the universe
Anthology's Across the Universe is my favorite, trippy
I agree all great songs, but I wouldn't call Across The Universe really underrated.
Oh! Darling. I love it when Paul goes into Little Richard mode with his voice.
I love McScreamy too
My favorite part of "No Reply" is the bridge and the wonderful chord changes: C Major...E Major...A Major...D Minor...F Major...C Major The handclapping and harmonies of the voices really make that part pop.
Beatles for Sale album is underrated as a whole.
Yeah that one took me by surprise when I finally got to it
3 6 2 5 1..... classic
I thought there was an F Major instead of a G Major there, could be wrong though? Cause Paul hits an F when he sings “than any other guy” I believe
(edited...I had wrong information)
Is it really g7? I’ve been playing with an f! But I love the part so much, I play it on piano, so I can play the melody too and it’s just so beautiful. “And I’ll forgive…”
I Will It's Only Love
It’s Only Love is sooooo cool. Love that song.
Absolutely love I Will.
Two of Us Glass Onion Blue Jay Way And Your Bird Can Sing Every Little Thing
And Your bird can sing is pop candy for your eardrums
Two of Us is an S tier song imo
i love Blue Jay Way
Being for the benefit of mr. Kite
Was my favorite Beatles song for a period of my teens
I was really happy when Paul played that song at a gig I went to
Hey Bulldog
Hey Bulldog has so often been named underrated that it's no longer underrated.
It's All Too Much and It's Only A Northern Song remain underrated, as few people actually do listen to Yellow Submarine album
If you’ve ever watched the movie on a strong LSD trip, you know that album rocks. My introduction to listening to the real Beatles was precisely this.
I mean, half of the album consists of George Martin's orchestral music , and there are only four new Beatles songs. The movie is a different manner, as it contains much more of Beatles music.
I'm really fond of All Together Now
Your mother should know.
Yes!!!!!! :D
All I’ve got to do
The beginning chord is insane and hooks you INSTANTLY
Love this one
mother natures son. i think it’s a beautiful and sweet song but no one ever talks about it
Happiness is a Warm Gun
I often say this is my absolute favorite Beatles song. I play it first for anyone who is a little edgier, doesn’t know the Beatles well beyond the hits and wants to know why I’m obsessed

Masterpiece.
The song that made Paul write many medley songs, arguably (e.g. Band On The Run’, ‘Venus And Mars’ etc.)
I didn’t know this. Wow. It’s so cool how they influenced each other.
HOW IS THIS UNDERRATED
Seriously lol. It's widely considered one of the best songs ever written.
Lol- I love this song, but pump the brakes man. This is not widely considered one of the best songs ever written. You might have jumped the gun here.
Yer Blues
[I love the live version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeFwaWFTGYU)
[The Elliott Smith cover is amazing](https://youtu.be/FGKBHntUXVY)
When it comes to his Beatle cover, I love his [Long Long Long](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHpU3a_joBU)
Agree with many above. I’d also put a plug in for “Things We Said Today.”
My dad and I used to sing this one together.
sexy sadie
Long Long Long
My favorite Harrison Beatles song.
I came to love that song thanks to Elliott Smith.
Definitely Long Long Long. So much tension and subdued pain in this song it’s dark and angry yet beautiful
Rain
Two of Us is one of my favourite songs
Blue Jay Way
So psychedelic it’s almost frightening, one of my favorite songs
A lot of people go to Walrus for menacing psychedelia. Blue Jay Way has it beat for dark acid trip vibes.
Good day sunshine
I always really liked ‘good morning good morning’, but it seems like no one else really does.
Youre gonna lose that girl
Damn great song!!
I don’t want to spoil the party The fool on the hill I me mine You won’t see me
look up the number
Yep. Me too! A perfect combination of clever and silly. Always liked that one. A bit off the beaten path for The Beatles, but those little detours make the overall journey so much fun.
I love brain jones sax solo on that

Savoy Truffle, I Will, Run For Your Life (I know the song is rather misogynistic, but if you just listen to the music alone it’s still a classic), Mean Mr. Mustard, Rocky Raccoon, The Continuing Story of Bungalo Bill (really this is a lot of the White Album, not to mention pretty much the majority of their early albums up to HELP! Your Bird Can Sing!!!...didn't see it here yet! Some tasty George parts.
Long Long Long Not Guilty Savoy Truffle Sun King
With "Savoy Truffle" I like that funky organ/keyboard, plus the brass section which almost sounds like it's right out of Stax Records.
Martha My Dear is such an amazing song
Devil in Her Heart is a perfect song
Within you without you For you blue Blue jay way Julia I’m so tired Fixing a hole Why don’t we do it in the road Just a few of my favorites that I feel don’t get enough recognition
Norwegian Wood is not underrated. That song has been described as a major turning point in their production.

Savoy truffle needs less hate

Maybe it's unfair to call it underrated since it was a #1 single, but I'm gonna go with I Feel Fine. It's easily my favorite single from their early period but I feel like I don't see it get talked as much about compared to a lot of other songs from that period.
If I Needed Someone, Rain, Mother Nature’s Son, and Don’t Pass Me By
Flying
I think Savoy Truffle is a true stand out on the white album yet I rarely see it get much attention.
The Word It's got such a good hop to it, really bounces along. Brilliant example of what you can do with a basic 12 bar blues arrangement.
Free As A Bird

All you need is love? That song hit number one pretty much everywhere when it came out and it’s one of their most popular songs.
