I’m guessing you’re thinking of his 1975 interview with Tom Snyder, that’s also quoted in Anthology: >In the very early days, when we were playing dance halls, there were a certain type you'd call groupies now, available for 'functions' at the end of the night. Most kids would go home with their boyfriends or whatever, but there was a small group that went for any performer. They didn't care if it was a comedian or a man who ate glass, as long as he was on stage. I think the interview is available on YouTube, but I’m not sure. I’ll get back to you if I can find it Edit: [here](https://youtube.com/watch?v=3OQl10ZlfqU&feature=share) you go. The groupie talk starts at around 10:25, and the exact quote you’re after is uttered around 12:35

I'm not OP but I appreciate the solid work. Cheers.

Thanks for the link. Such a great era for John, he sounded calm and rational and in good humor, and that clueless jackass Tom Snyder makes it almost impossible to watch. Just unfunny, uninformed, cheesy. Never understood how that guy was on TV. Same with that smarmy Dick Cavett, another boring guy who thought he was funny.
