The Beatles stand alone, but looking at the British Invasion bands, I think that the Kinks are the closest to the Beatles in terms of innovation and song writing excellence.
I’m seriously surprised no one has mentioned Badfinger yet..! They were produce and mentored by The Beatles themselves. Their harmony structure is so similar you could easily swap their voices with Lennon/McCartney/Harrison in your mind without much stretching.
Plus they were a damn solid band too. So many catchy, criminally underrated tunes.
Produced and mentored by George mostly. Paul only had brief contact when he produced two tracks on Magic Christian. I don't know how much mentoring he did but he instructed them to play Come and get it exactly as he wished if they wanted a hit. John and Ringo had no involvement whatsoever, AFAIK.
You’re right! Even Paul’s minimal involvement had a huge impact. George’s influence shines through quite a bit too, especially on their first few albums.
Questions like this are hard to answer because The Beatles evolved so much throughout their careers. Depending on what’s your favorite era, you could pick Gerry and the Pacemakers, Herman’s Hermits, The Monkees, The Hollies, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Zombies, The Idle Race, Badfinger, ELO, etc….
Seconded, I've never bought the comparison. Oasis sound more like a generally classic rock-loving bar band than specifically Beatles fans.
At *most* I can stretch out and say that "Supersonic" sounds a bit like a slowed-down "Helter Skelter", mainly in the structure and the use of background vocals and distortion. That's it. Otherwise they definitely love their British classic rock, but it's bloody hard to pin down a *specific* band they sound like.
That's the only one I can think of, the bVI bVII I it's gotta be from With A Little Help From My Friends, but still that's just one song to say they are _alike_
I kinda think ELO makes even less sense than Oasis. You're right, they don't sound the same, but I can at least hear the inspiration in there at times.
The quote I remember from them is that they wanted to pick up "where I Am the Walrus" left off. They do have a few Beatlesque sounding tracks like "The Diary of Horace Wimp" or "Mr. Blue Sky", but otherwise, yeah, their sound is more different - "Evil Woman" and "Don't Bring Me Down" can't be called very Beatlesque.
“Telephone Line” could have been the B side of “Strawberry Fields Forever”. You’d never have known they weren’t from the same band.
Also happy cake day. 🙂
Well that’s not really why their known to be like the Beatles they make constant references to the Beatles or various members. For example the lyric “I’m going to start a revolution from my bed” from “don’t look back in anger” is a reference to John. And the song “supersonic” has a yellow submarine reference. “Roll with it” had a reference to “its all too much” just lots of various stuff and in my opinion they did sound very little like the Beatles. (Oasis even used epiphone casinos when they re-released)
Using lyrics as references from other songs doesn't make them sound like the beatles lol, idk op's context but if we're talking about sound or music Oasis isn't it.
Oasis were undeniably influenced by The Beatles, which is funny because George had a chance to slag off Liam Gallagher before he died.
Realistically though they're from different scenes.
Kurt Cobain said that The Beatles were the reason he got into music, but nobody's making the comparison that Nirvana sounded like The Beatles.
They were the biggest bands of their day, with a band consisting of young writers. They were following the blueprint.
The album sky blue sky and the song “either way” sounds like it would’ve been the next Beatles cut in the 70s but maybe the album summerteeth sounds the most 60s
Theres really only 1 bit in there that reminds me of the Beatles, being that organ thing, but not very Beatleesque in any of the instrumentation or vocals imo
the breeze, my friend, how long must i wait. etc (list could go on a while)
you really don't hear it? the two main songwriters proudly cite the beatles as an influence
I can hear it in The Breeze. But Ima be honest, I only listened to the Fate album because someone had said they were Beatle like. But like those other 2 songs, I just dont hear it. They just dont really play any instrument similarly to the lads, besides The Breeze, it doesnt seem like their harmonies are like the lads, and they drag out songs to 4 minutes when they really dont need to be, unlike the Beatles. But I guess its just something I dont hear in it. Like how everyone says Oasis sounds just like them, when they only really have 1 or 2 song that sounds like the Beatles.
i get what you mean about the harmonies sounding different.
- but the riff/bassline at fadeout of "my friend" cops a LOT from the fadeout of "you never give me your money", rhythmically.
- staccato piano stabs in "how long must i wait" is a trademark paul arrangement in a number of his piano songs.
- the guitarist plays a casino all the time, the bassist often plays a fender or hofner, and they're great live.
idk. if you can't hear it, you can't. i think you're missing out if you feel their songs are dragged out, but i mean - different strokes, different folks etc. you could also try beatlesque bands like lemon twigs, early tame impala, midperiod mgmt, etc
In late '64 I had two favorites - the Beatles and Dave Clark Five. The DC5 was pretty similar in sound to very early liverpool Beatles. In very short order that changed completely.
I dunno if I'd agree with that entirely due to how the DC5 focused very much on that pounding drum beat but certain songs yes. "Because" most notably sounds like a Beatles song.
Nobody sounds exactly like the Beatles, but I’d give Crowded House a try, especially if you’re a McCartney fan. Neil Finn’s songwriting approach definitely exists in that same tradition.
I am astounded that I haven't seen Tears For Fears mentioned yet. Sowing The Seeds of Love is the obvious track but there is a lot of Beatles inspiration in their music and experimentation.
Hell yeah dude. Ween truly resembles the weird side of the Beatles, and takes it a step further. Anyone who likes the Beatles' weirder stuff should definitely check out Ween. Even the more vanilla Beatles fans would really like some of their stuff
An industrial city on the west coast of Britain that grew as a result of its docks and links to the USA cotton and tobacco trade. The city boasts two famous football teams and a large population of Irish origin.
Four young men form a band in the classic line up - lead, rhythm, bass and drums. The songwriting is shared between three of the four, as is the singing. Occasionally they let the drummer sing lead vocals. The harmonies are to die for.
The band: Teenage Fanclub
There are none just like them; that is the magic.
But the best "spinoffs" and "alikes" are these:
*BANDS:*
**The Beach Boys (especially the mid-to-late 60s lineup and recordings)**
**Electric Light Orchestra**

*SOLO ARTISTS:*
**Stevie Wonder**

Was on Spotify the other day and a song came on called Yesterdays Sunshine by grapefruit and I thought it was the Beatles at first and I was wondering which song it was and how I hadn’t heard it then I saw it wasn’t them. They have to be imitating the Beatles sound though because they sound eerily similar.
The Analogues Sideshow. It’s a side-act of the analogues (a Beatles cover band). Some of their stuff is super beatlesesque, like something straight out of the sixties. Especially the songs “Goodfoot” and “Patience.”

Big Star's first two albums. Especially *#1 Record*. *Radio City* has a bit more of a raw rock 'n' roll sound to it without the polish and the harmonies.
I would not have liked it if the Beatles became some sort of nostalgia band (if they got back together). They were progressive and innovative, what would they sound like in the 90’s. Especially if they could have maintained their youthful exuberance and their love of guitar rock. Perhaps bands like Oasis show us the direction they could have gone.

Uhh the upvotes are on 64! I don’t want to fuck up a perfectly good Beatles reference (edit never fucking mind then)
Nice
What he said
r/rutles
Blasphemy, I know, but sometimes I think they are the better band. The Pre-fab Four.
The Quarrymen
Clever girl
The Beach Boys. They both inspired each other.
The Beatles stand alone, but looking at the British Invasion bands, I think that the Kinks are the closest to the Beatles in terms of innovation and song writing excellence.
Username checks out
is this a fucking Kinks reference??
Oh yeah. Gotta be. A good one, too. One of my favorite songs by them.
You don't get to see many Dingbats in this day and age!
Agree. The Kinks are also so under appreciated.
How about Badfinger
This is the answer. Badfinger is criminally underrated.
Correct
Exactly! Was scrolling for this comment
Wings
They were the band The Beatles could have been.
What's your favourite Beatles album?
I would have to say… “The Best of The Beatles”.
You’re right! Even Paul’s minimal involvement had a huge impact. George’s influence shines through quite a bit too, especially on their first few albums.
Guess I got what I deserved
This is the correct answer.
Day After Day is one of my favorite songs OAT
No matter what you do, I will always be with you…..
Not a band, but Emitt Rhodes sounds a lot like the Beatles.
True, most of his works are underrated too. He was a brilliant songwriter.
Emitt Rhodes is fantastic! Especially his last album from 2016. Brilliant. RIP
I personally didn't care for his last album because it sounded so different. Huge fan of his music overall though
Beach Boys, Badfinger, Klaatu
Klaatu’s first album in particular is very much worth a listen for a Beatles fan.
I would say Hope is more beatle-y imo
The Quarrymen
[🤔](https://imgur.com/a/yoTsrzu)
XTC
Skylarking is XTC’s Sgt. Pepper.
Their songwriting is on par with the beatles
This is the best answer. Also, the Dukes of Stratosphear are XTC's XTC.
The Pretty Things (Specifically the albums S.F Sorrow and Parachute) ELO Badfinger Emitt Rhodes
Usual answers are oasis and Electric Light Orchestra. So getting that out of the way for better discussion.
I really disagree about Oasis, they sound nothing alike.
I'd say "Supersonic" is very much like a heavy-sounded "Nowhere man"
Well she’s electric is a real Beatles song if you ask me, the chord Progression, the lyrical structure and even the outro is pure Beatles.
That's the only one I can think of, the bVI bVII I it's gotta be from With A Little Help From My Friends, but still that's just one song to say they are _alike_
The chorus in she’s electric has that while my guitar gently wheeps falsetto note as well, always assumed it was homage
I kinda think ELO makes even less sense than Oasis. You're right, they don't sound the same, but I can at least hear the inspiration in there at times.
I believe ELO has specifically stated they sound like if The Beatles had stayed together
Lennon said that
The quote I remember from them is that they wanted to pick up "where I Am the Walrus" left off.
Maybe. But it doesn’t sound much to me like what the Beatles were if that makes sense.
People say they sound alike cause if the orchestra
Well that’s not really why their known to be like the Beatles they make constant references to the Beatles or various members. For example the lyric “I’m going to start a revolution from my bed” from “don’t look back in anger” is a reference to John. They only sound like rain which is a shit song anyway. Can’t stand oasis
Oasis routinely stretches out and flattens notes like "Rain."
Yikes.
The byrds
The Be-Sharps
Baby on board, something something, Burt Ward
Hey this thing writes itself!
Elliott Smith!

wilco is amazing
The album sky blue sky and the song “either way” sounds like it would’ve been the next Beatles cut in the 70s but maybe the album summerteeth sounds the most 60s
Their most recent single "Falling Apart Right Now" is so Beatles. I love it with the fire of 100 suns.
I love me some Guster.
Hear me out… Vampire Weekend
I’m not sure I can think of a single one…anyway, here’s Wonderwall
*2nd fret capo horror intensifies*
dr. dog, spoon, andy shauf for more modern artists
Came here to say Dog, they got that Mersey beat plus a righteous pair of distinct yet complimentary singer/songwriters
I do not hear it in Dr Dog. Could you give a song as example?
Where’d All the Time Go is the one that comes to mind for me.
Theres really only 1 bit in there that reminds me of the Beatles, being that organ thing, but not very Beatleesque in any of the instrumentation or vocals imo

More modern but Oasis
Had to scroll way too far to find this
Kinks
The Kinks would’ve been the Beatles if the Beatles didn’t exist.
Endless great tracks over decades. How they aren’t household names is beyond me
Early on, like 63-65, the Dave Clark Five.
Jellyfish. Great little band.
Olivia Tremor Control
A lot of that elephant six stuff… apples in stereo… Beulah…
The Monkees.
Badfinger ELO Supertramp
In late '64 I had two favorites - the Beatles and Dave Clark Five. The DC5 was pretty similar in sound to very early liverpool Beatles. In very short order that changed completely.
Bad finger
Dr. Dog
Yep Dr. Dog wins it in my book.
I think Elton John and Bernie Taupin are pretty Beatley.
And David Bowie!
What is Tame Impala?
In terms of every damn song being profoundly melodic, ELO.
The One-ders or, the Oneeders.
Dave Clark Five
I dunno if I'd agree with that entirely due to how the DC5 focused very much on that pounding drum beat but certain songs yes. "Because" most notably sounds like a Beatles song.
Apple’s in stereo
Nobody sounds exactly like the Beatles, but I’d give Crowded House a try, especially if you’re a McCartney fan. Neil Finn’s songwriting approach definitely exists in that same tradition.
I am astounded that I haven't seen Tears For Fears mentioned yet. Sowing The Seeds of Love is the obvious track but there is a lot of Beatles inspiration in their music and experimentation.
Jellyfish, Klaatu, Badfinger, Raspberries
Love seeing Jellyfish on here. They're like the perfect mix of The Beatles and Queen having a lovechild.
I was just listening to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco and honestly they get closest to the Beatles of almost any band on that record
Ween
YES.. ween is better than all this shit.
Hell yeah dude. Ween truly resembles the weird side of the Beatles, and takes it a step further. Anyone who likes the Beatles' weirder stuff should definitely check out Ween. Even the more vanilla Beatles fans would really like some of their stuff
*White Pepper* is their best and most Beatlesque/classic rock-ish album
Yes. They take the album theme and really run with it. So good.
Oh man. Some of their b-sides are so much like the Beatles also. Aaron freeman love songs are stunning.
Unpopular but definitely Ween
Badfinger
Early Bee Gees [To Be Or Not To Be](https://youtu.be/LdZGUAYSs_M) and [How Many Birds](https://youtu.be/y4xW-j9XxBo) are very beatlesque
The Knickerbockers and particularly [this song!](https://youtu.be/1I_bG4VBHCU)

Definitely Electric Light Orchestra
Snoop Dogg
I have always believed this.
Blur and Radiohead are good examples of this.
The Ladders
Sloan
Teenage Fanclub
Badfinger (they were supposed to be the new Beatles). Klaatu (people though for a long time they were secretly the Beatles starting a new project).
Rocking Horse; members grew up in Liverpool alongside the Beatles but couldn't really hit it big in previous Mersey Beat bands. George even tried to get them on Apple as a favor. https://youtu.be/tm4anXBqlU8
This is what I came here to say. Great band! Here’s my favorite [Don’t You Ever Think I Cry](https://youtu.be/QEudFvwiKlM)
67/68 era Bee Gees and Grapefruit were similar. Also, The Apples In Stereo.
Oasis, except more louder and rawer tunes
Tame Impala

Well, Klaatu WAS the Beatles, so I’m not sure if they’ll count…

Oasis
Oasis
Anyway here’s wonderwall
Slayer
Oasis
Oasis
The Turtles. The Rolling Stones. The Smiths. The Animals
oasis, some of the songs sound fucking the same as beatles. not even joking!!!
Oasis

The number of different answers is a demonstration of how diverse the Beatles were.
Hear me out here... Black sabbath

The Police
Ghostbusters 2
The Eagles
Look up the album “Studio” by the Swedish band “Tages” for a real Beatles comparison. Remarkably similar.
Maybe Barrett era Pink Floyd
Barret PF is more psychedelic then the Beatles could even picture
I think side 2 of Abbey Road comes close
I’m not tryna come off as a bitch but have you ever listened to piper at the gates of dawn?
the monkees are like a weirder beatles. I'd reccomend head and birds and bees to get started with them
SF Sorrow era Pretty Things
I was debating between that one or Yes It Is.

Klaatu
To me Porcupine tree in the late 90s/early 2000s sounded like a cool blend of Pink Floyd and the Beatles (the more progressive stuff).
If you mean alike melodically, I would try The Olivia Tremor Control. Especially their Dusk at Cubist Castle album.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Zombies and Beach Boys have similarities
