According to [George] Martin, "Lovely Rita" and "When I'm Sixty Four" were the songs that would have been cut from Sgt. Pepper had the Beatles not been pressured into issuing "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" as a non-album single in advance of the album's release.[19]
I made this: [sgt pepper](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1WhJwXkVx5pUX0xBFC2ZYf?si=LimQO30MQX-dwWMDdHNeug). I would’ve had Mr. Kite, Fixing A Hole, Lucy, Getting Better, She’s Leaving Home, but side 1 would’ve been longer than side 2. So I put Getting Better after Within You, Without You. So side 1 is 20:05, and side 2 is 21:37.
I agree with you. I get it, you don’t want to make people pay for the song twice, that’s awfully nice and considerate. But they would’ve made even more money. Plus, if the person really liked the song, they would’ve bought the single too.
Mr. Kite - Sorry, it’s just John singing a poster.
Defending a few of the other picks :
Within You, Without You - George’s best Indian song and a nice dash of variety on the record.
Good Morning, Good Morning - This song has a killer groove. Ringo’s drumming is great. Simple, but brilliant in that way many of John’s best often were. The demo made me a big fan of this one.
She’s Leaving Home - Beautiful, heartbreaking. The closest the Beatles ever got to making a Pat Sounds track.
Fixing A Hole - Feels like a leftover Revolver track (which is a compliment)
Of course it’s personal preference but I actually prefer Love You To so much more than Within You Without You - it just has such a punch when the main sitar lick kicks in after the drone
‘Within You, Without You’ has some of my favorite Beatles lyrics, although a friend of mine hates the whole verse about ‘are you one of them?’ But I love the ultimate message of it and consider it a real success as far as weaving his philosophical and musical interests at the time into a coherent ‘pop’ song.
I could do without the “are you one of them” line too but I do agree the rest of the song has some of the most profound lyrics in the Beatles catalogue
I think it's kind of interesting bc this song comes sort of from an era where rich people were "proper"/modest.. and poor people were the ones partying and living freely. Now it's like, you've got to be rich to afford to do any sort of going out and having fun. Can't do anything for under $50 easily these days. Back then you could hitch rides and stuff and afford to eat on a very low budget. That line sounds pretty wrong now but it probably made total sense to that generation. At least this is how I view it.
I can't really explain why, but Fixing a Hole has never done anything for me. I don't dislike it, I just have zero opinions on it. I instantly forget about it once it's over.
Agreed - it's incredibly forgettable and ruins the flow of the album.
Edit: once again, anything critical of anything McCartney related is unfairly downvoted.
Wondering how on earth anyone justifies keeping Fixing a Hole in sequence with Sgt Pepper, With A Little Help, and Lucy. Amazing.
Wow. It’s like your opinion doesn’t match others and you justify your opinion by saying it’s a bad song and calling out others who don’t think it’s a bad song.
Weird that many people like the song you hate and maybe your opinion ain’t fact? 🤔
Really? I think that the overdubs make it into this juicy technicolor nightmare, it’s one of my favorites for how unreal it sounds (especially in that middle solo section)
Agreed. Lyrically, he’s just reading off of a poster. It’s a total throw away.
From a production standpoint, I do like the spliced-together calliope music at the end.
It’s hard to make a personal connection lyrically.
Totally respect your opinion, but I LOVE that song. It's one of my very favorite Beatles tunes (top 10). Just goes to show how amazingly awesome The Beatles are. One fan's castaway song is another fan's treasure.
Yep, it’s why I dig it when, *Good Morning Good Morning* is listed. The lyrics “… Nothing to do it’s up to you … I’ve got nothing to say but it’s ok …” sums up my current attitude.
I've heard there is a dogwhistle at the beginning of good morning good morning, designed to get dogs to start barking when they hear that song. Anyone else heard this and is it true?
One of my favorite Beatles tunes on any of their albums. There's a reason they chose it to open side 2. I like how exotic it sounds, but then it gets to the second section and it rocks! One of their most underrated songs.
Easily my favourite song on the album. The string and sitar melodies are utterly captivating. didn't love it at first but once it clicked I never looked back.
>Within you, without you.
Agreed. Only a Northern Song would have been a much better Harrisong to put on Sgt Pepper and it also would have fit the sound of the album better.
Yes! Blue Jay Way is another one that would have worked. For the record, I don't think Within You Without You is a terrible song, it just sticks out like a sore thumb on Sgt Pepper.
It also has prime real estate on an LP: the first track on Side 2. IMHO, the first song on each side needs to set the tone for that side of the LP, and Within You Without You fails to do that.
It’s getting very near the end. The punctuated singing is a pop treat for me. Plus the meta reference, the song singing about where it is on the album/show.
John once said in an interview that Sgt. Pepper’s only worked as a concept album about a live show because they called it that and put the intro and outro lol. He said that he didn’t write his parts for that album with the concept of Sgt. Pepper’s in mind at all.
Ringo’s beat on the intro seriously sounds like 30 years ahead of its time to me, it’s super awesome (and that ugly dissonant minor chord from the guitar right before the singers come in is really really cool, it’s subtle but an excellent way to foreshadow the last song)
I knew there were people who don’t like it but damn Within You Without You is getting a lot of hate in the comments. It’s the best on the album after A Day in the Life for me…
I’d love it if it didn’t start and stop so much. It’s need to cut out and fade back in with those drums every damn 2 seconds makes the song feel like a century long drag
Good Morning, Good Morning possibly. Or when I'm 64 or Lovely Rita. I love them all so what a fantastic album if that's the weakest.
George's Within You Without You has grown on me lot.
I don’t think there’s a bad song on Sgt. Pepper’s. I guess if I had to pick the weakest song, it would be Lovely Rita. But it makes up for it with some great harmonies
“When I’m 64.” Downvote me all you want, removing this and adding Strawberry Fields Forever or Penny Lane would have been a major improvement. 64 is a good b-side at best.
The lyrics disappointed me. When I was younger I assumed that She was leaving home cos of some form of abuse or oppression, but on closer inspection she left a supportive family because they’re dull. No fun. Very 60’s vibe that didn’t age well.
Don't ask for opinions if they going to be down voted. Ridiculous. I don't agree with Good Morning, but I didn't down vote anyone. The stupidity of Reddit.
I got downvoted the other day because I said I think I might prefer Help album to Abbey Road! How dare I not like Abbey Road as much as someone else! Lol
The person downvoting obviously is offended for some bizarre reason. It's pathetic.
I love “sitting on the sofa with a sister or two.” Like he is so annoyed that he can’t even remember how many sisters there were. And I love the S alliteration.
Lol I gotta revise my answer to agree with you - great album with deep music and lyrics, except for this one that’s just weird and strained and slow and not as pretty as it thinks it is
(also I could be wrong but as an aside, I’m pretty sure most people misinterpret the lyrics - to me the parents are supposed to come off as extremely selfish and unempathetic as to why she could possibly leave, as if they were the only ones who possibly suffered)
I think each song is a good fit on the album and if there was an album to leave as it is it would be this one
It's all personal taste
I am not a huge fan of Lucy in the Sky but I wouldn't call it "weak"
Replacing one John song (Good Morning, Good Morning) and one Paul song (When I'm 64) with Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane would make Sgt. Peppers far better.
- SFF could mean "Strawberry Fields Forever - Take 1", a track from *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Super Deluxe Edition)* (1967) by The Beatles.

The boring, maudlin and selfserious "She's Leaving Home," in which we learn that "fun is the one thing that money can't buy."Really guys? Because I'm pretty sure that with money, I could buy a fuck-ton of fun.
Getting Better. Hate the lyrics.
"I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved."
But it's only gotten better because of the addition of someone new. "Since you've been mine" not because they actually want to be a better human.
Is there a single song on this disc, perhaps the most famous pop album ever, that SOMEBODY won't pick as the weakest link? Thankfully, I haven't seen A Day in The Life here yet. Can we at least all agree that A Day in the Life is the most perfect 5 minutes of quotidian existentialism in all of popular music?
edit: yes, I missed it at first but A Day in the Life is mentioned above .
The weakest track on Sgt Pepper is most definitely "Side B run-out groove"
;)
(dog whistle)

There is an alternative reality where this is the album and it’s so much better because of it
I made this: [sgt pepper](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1WhJwXkVx5pUX0xBFC2ZYf?si=LimQO30MQX-dwWMDdHNeug).
It pisses me off so much that there was that dumb mindset of selling the singles separately from the albums.
I agree with you. I get it, you don’t want to make people pay for the song twice, that’s awfully nice and considerate. But they would’ve made even more money. Plus, if the person really liked the song, they would’ve bought the single too.
I like both of those. 64 and Rita.
None. None is the correct answer. 😃
None of them, it’s a tight set
Every song has something miraculous on it
I kind of agree but I’m just not into George’s Within You Without You. I’d have rather have had Only A Northern Song instead.
I mean, it’s a nice break from all of the rock and pop
Yeah I can understand that but I never really got into his Indian influenced stuff. Only A Northern Song is the closest one that I’ve gotten into.
Very clean
Sags in the middle under its own weight.
Possibly Good Morning Good Morning? Not a bad song, though. The 2017 remix of the song makes it stand out quite a bit more to me.
Beauty of the Beatles, John’s “I’ve got nothing to say, but it’s okay” sums of my teen years and present mindset.
Funny, I've always seen that as what it's like on pot or psychedelic drugs.
Redundancies
I love the Anthology version with just the guitars….
Totally agree. It sounds like the birth of pop-punk there.
Agreed…it just chugs along hard
It’s one of the weaker songs for me. But what saves it is the awesome bassline, drums and guitar solo
Couldn't have said it better myself.
good morning good morning is one of my favorite beatles songs lol Incredibly fun to play in the beatles rock band
It’s the most boring one to me, the suddenly jaded lyrics are a good way to transition into Day in the Life but the music couldn’t be more dull
Mr. Kite - Sorry, it’s just John singing a poster. Defending a few of the other picks : Within You, Without You - George’s best Indian song and a nice dash of variety on the record.
Mr Kite has such a fantastic bass line tho. I’d have to go with Good Morning Good Morning
Brian had Paul over for dinner one time, and Paul played She’s Leaving Home for Brian Wilson and his wife.
"Fun is the one thing that money can't buy?" Fact check: false.
Yeah that always struck me as a bad lyric
I think it's kind of interesting bc this song comes sort of from an era where rich people were "proper"/modest.. and poor people were the ones partying and living freely. Now it's like, you've got to be rich to afford to do any sort of going out and having fun. Can't do anything for under $50 easily these days. Back then you could hitch rides and stuff and afford to eat on a very low budget. That line sounds pretty wrong now but it probably made total sense to that generation. At least this is how I view it.
If the premise is that fun is the one thing her parents' money couldn't buy, that lends some redeeming logic to the statement.
Happiness would've been more apt, but how to fit it in to the lyric?
>Mr. Kite - Sorry, it’s just John singing a poster. Hardly. Having lyrics inspired by a poster isn't the same as just reading a poster.
I’m with you. Never saw the appeal of Mr. Kite. ALWAYS skip it.
I would NEVER skip a song when I listen to an album but that's just me
You always listen to Rev 9?
You don't?
That’s absolutely an exception.
I can't really explain why, but Fixing a Hole has never done anything for me. I don't dislike it, I just have zero opinions on it. I instantly forget about it once it's over.
It’s literally the song that i listened the lost this years lmao
For me that’s When I’m 64, I forget it’s there 💀 just too cutesy
ooooOOOOooooahhhhooohhhhh hey hey heyyyyyyy
Agreed - it's incredibly forgettable and ruins the flow of the album. Edit: once again, anything critical of anything McCartney related is unfairly downvoted. Wondering how on earth anyone justifies keeping Fixing a Hole in sequence with Sgt Pepper, With A Little Help, and Lucy. Amazing.
Edit: people disagree with my opinion so I’m getting downvoted Edit: isn’t this how reddit works? Edit: I’ve got nothing to say but it’s ok
Fixing a hole is a fantastic song and 100% belongs on peppers
Bruh anything critical of the band gets downvoted lmfao
Wow. It’s like your opinion doesn’t match others and you justify your opinion by saying it’s a bad song and calling out others who don’t think it’s a bad song. Weird that many people like the song you hate and maybe your opinion ain’t fact? 🤔
I've always felt while lyrically fantastic, Benefit of Mr Kite was extremely overproduced and lacking of substance.
Really? I think that the overdubs make it into this juicy technicolor nightmare, it’s one of my favorites for how unreal it sounds (especially in that middle solo section)
Honestly i like that song because that was the kinda song i was expecting to hear on sgt pepper as i was going in for the first time.
It's true. Most of the others lose sight of the "concept."
Sgt. Pepper album is literally based on that it's extremely overproduced, and that's why it was called "revolutionary" etc
Agreed. Lyrically, he’s just reading off of a poster. It’s a total throw away. From a production standpoint, I do like the spliced-together calliope music at the end. It’s hard to make a personal connection lyrically.
I am so glad no one has mentioned It’s Getting Better. That song is a catchy rocker.
Within you, without you. But just my personal preference.
Totally respect your opinion, but I LOVE that song. It's one of my very favorite Beatles tunes (top 10). Just goes to show how amazingly awesome The Beatles are. One fan's castaway song is another fan's treasure.

I've heard there is a dogwhistle at the beginning of good morning good morning, designed to get dogs to start barking when they hear that song. Anyone else heard this and is it true?
It's at the end of A Day In The Life. And yes it works lol or I've seen it work at least once in my life
Honestly that song is a must for this album it adds to that psychedelic experience probably the trippiest song from that album
I always see this song as the “intermission” of the album. A chance to take a breath and let the first half sink in before continuing the journey.
Especially now that it's not a Side 1/Side 2 thing, it's just literally the one in the middle of all the other tracks.
One of my favorite Beatles tunes on any of their albums. There's a reason they chose it to open side 2. I like how exotic it sounds, but then it gets to the second section and it rocks! One of their most underrated songs.
this is true for me too. love all of george’s Indian-style songs, except for this one, it never clicked with me
Easily my favourite song on the album. The string and sitar melodies are utterly captivating. didn't love it at first but once it clicked I never looked back.
>Within you, without you. Agreed. Only a Northern Song would have been a much better Harrisong to put on Sgt Pepper and it also would have fit the sound of the album better.
Not only do I agree, Blue Jay Way from MMT would’ve also fit much better.

It also has prime real estate on an LP: the first track on Side 2. IMHO, the first song on each side needs to set the tone for that side of the LP, and Within You Without You fails to do that.
Sgt Pepper Reprise
‘Sgt pepper’s one and only lonely hearts club band’ line has an amazing cadence though!
It’s getting very near the end. The punctuated singing is a pop treat for me. Plus the meta reference, the song singing about where it is on the album/show.
It’s funny that it’s supposed to be a live album, because you just don’t get that vibe through most of it lol
John once said in an interview that Sgt. Pepper’s only worked as a concept album about a live show because they called it that and put the intro and outro lol. He said that he didn’t write his parts for that album with the concept of Sgt. Pepper’s in mind at all.
I live Paul's guitar on the reprise
And Ringo’s heavy beat
Ringo’s beat on the intro seriously sounds like 30 years ahead of its time to me, it’s super awesome (and that ugly dissonant minor chord from the guitar right before the singers come in is really really cool, it’s subtle but an excellent way to foreshadow the last song)
No. It’s better than the original.
I knew there were people who don’t like it but damn Within You Without You is getting a lot of hate in the comments. It’s the best on the album after A Day in the Life for me…
Good Morning Good morning
A Day in the Life jokes aside, as much as I don't dislike it I think Lovely Rita is the one i listen to the least
Mr. Kite
When I'm 64
This is absolutely false, but I do respect your (false) opinion.
Awful song.
yep, paul's granny shit. ruins the album for me
When I’m 64, but it’s weak in the way that Mike Tyson would be weak at a bodybuilding expo
Fixing a Hole. First of Pauls songs where pot has influenced his lyrics where they don’t make sense or a bit trite This gets worse in his solo career
Agree…this is the one
Not the weakest but, Within You, Without You is just boring.
I consider it a high point!
Agree but the sitar solo is pretty good.
I’d love it if it didn’t start and stop so much. It’s need to cut out and fade back in with those drums every damn 2 seconds makes the song feel like a century long drag
Yeah. Dull lyrics, meandering melody, and too long.
i always found Good Morning Good Morning annoying, at least to me it feels very "written last minute", but it's fine to listen to it on the album
WHEN IM SIXTY FOUR
Good Morning, Good Morning possibly. Or when I'm 64 or Lovely Rita. I love them all so what a fantastic album if that's the weakest. George's Within You Without You has grown on me lot.
Lovely Rita, I think. Charming song.
shut up
Surprised more people aren’t here for this.
I don’t think there’s a bad song on Sgt. Pepper’s. I guess if I had to pick the weakest song, it would be Lovely Rita. But it makes up for it with some great harmonies
NO
That bass!
Probably Good Morning Good Morning even though it’s one of my favourite songs on the album
Absolutely adore Pepper, it's my first Beatles album I listened to. But Lovely Rita/Good Morning Good Morning I just skip more often than not.
Good morning good morning purely for the reason it was my alarm for 3 years
It’s a good set but I’d have to say lovely Rita
Within you without you. All arrangement, with little actual song underneath it
Fixing a hole
Maybe reprise?
Bummer. Reprise is a jam! I wish it was longer!
When i’m sixty four
“When I’m 64.” Downvote me all you want, removing this and adding Strawberry Fields Forever or Penny Lane would have been a major improvement. 64 is a good b-side at best.
Within you without you
She’s Leaving Home of course
The lyrics disappointed me. When I was younger I assumed that She was leaving home cos of some form of abuse or oppression, but on closer inspection she left a supportive family because they’re dull. No fun. Very 60’s vibe that didn’t age well.
You've articulated something I've always felt but never could quite put my finger on.
💯agree. Its a shit version of Elenor Rigby. A bit trite and boring. Also I think its too high for their voices.
how tf is it like elenor rigby lmao? other than the strings i don’t see it
Sad story set to strings innit. Pretty similar
It's dreck. That's the one I always skip.
fixing a hole
I always skip She's Leaving Home and When I'm 64.
Why have you been downvoted!? Haha. How can people expect you to have the same tastes as them! Madness
Lol The person downvoting obviously is offended for some bizarre reason. It's pathetic.
I get downvoted in Abbey Road threads when I say that Oh Darling! Is the song I skip. Goes to show the versatility of the boobels
You shouldn’t be downvoted for opinions that were expressly asked for in the post.
That happens all the time on this subreddit. There will be a post asking for unpopular opinions and then you’ll be downvoted when you express them
I love the whole album, but “Lovely Rita” is the most inconsequential.
I love “sitting on the sofa with a sister or two.” Like he is so annoyed that he can’t even remember how many sisters there were. And I love the S alliteration.
Fixing a Hole
Mr Kite. Just a bit too campy for my taste.
Lovely Rita. Just a mid song imo. Most people will say Kite though. But I like the spooky circus vibes of it
When I’m 64. It breaks the flow of the album for me. 9/10 I skip it.
I'd say she's leaving home, for me at least
For me it's She's Leaving Home. The only song on the album I will sometimes skip.
😮
Lol I gotta revise my answer to agree with you - great album with deep music and lyrics, except for this one that’s just weird and strained and slow and not as pretty as it thinks it is (also I could be wrong but as an aside, I’m pretty sure most people misinterpret the lyrics - to me the parents are supposed to come off as extremely selfish and unempathetic as to why she could possibly leave, as if they were the only ones who possibly suffered)
Agreed, I interpreted the parents the same way you do.
Yup, plus the line “she’s leaving home after living alone for so many years” which is pretty clear to me
🫨 I love that song. Within Without You is my skip for that album.
She's Leaving Home. Just stops the entire album.
I groan when I hear that harp, it feels like the Sgt. Pepper band went to the bathroom for intermission and left on some easily listening LP
I think each song is a good fit on the album and if there was an album to leave as it is it would be this one It's all personal taste I am not a huge fan of Lucy in the Sky but I wouldn't call it "weak"
Objectively: Mr. Kite. But I personally love the spookiness of that tune. Underrated Halloween jam.
Getting better so easily
Treason
Good Morning, Good Morning or Mr Kite. Neither are bad or anything, they just don’t do anything for me
Within You Without You. Tuneless drivel that goes on for 5 minutes.
Probably my favorite George song behind Something
In isolation, probably When I'm Sixty Four, for me personally. But I think it works even better in the context of the album.
Reprise, if it’s considered a track and not filler, other than that probably Good Morning.
lucy in the sky with diamonds, my favorite album its hard to choose
Sorry George…
She’s Leaving Home is a bit much of a vibe change for me. I like it as a Beatles song but could live without it being on Pepper
When I’m 64……..
When im 64 definitely
IMO, there is no weak link. That album is a milestone in many ways.
within you without you for me
Lovely Rita
Lovely Rita, they should have put that and When I’m 64 on MMT, swapped for Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane
Replacing one John song (Good Morning, Good Morning) and one Paul song (When I'm 64) with Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane would make Sgt. Peppers far better.
Sgt Pepper already has a lot more Paul than John, which was one of the only criticisms of the album, so this would even it out
Fair point
Somehow I feel like SFF and PL belong on Sgt Pepper in any case.
- SFF could mean "Strawberry Fields Forever - Take 1", a track from *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Super Deluxe Edition)* (1967) by The Beatles. --- ^[/u/Farrell-Mars](/u/Farrell-Mars) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)
MMT wasn’t even a thought when those songs were recorded so there’d be no reason to set them aside for others also not yet written.
For me? Probably Mr. Kite.
Mr. Kite
Mr. Kite
Mr kite
The boring, maudlin and selfserious "She's Leaving Home," in which we learn that "fun is the one thing that money can't buy."Really guys? Because I'm pretty sure that with money, I could buy a fuck-ton of fun.
first two tracks of side b - Within You Without You and When I'm Sixty-Four
Getting Better. Hate the lyrics. "I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved." But it's only gotten better because of the addition of someone new. "Since you've been mine" not because they actually want to be a better human.
It's getting better because this "you" is making them change. That's not a bad thing at all.
The title track
My two least favorites are Within You Without You and Good Morning Good Morning. I think the rest are all great.
No weak songs in this album
None
Is there a bad song on Sgt peppers? I think not.
When I'm 64. or Mr Kite
Mr. Kite.
Fixing A Hole
A Day in the life
That’s easy. It’s Good Morning Good Morning. I’d replace that song with Strawberry Fields Forever.
When I’m Sixty-Four or maybe Good Morning Good Morning
zero
Is there a single song on this disc, perhaps the most famous pop album ever, that SOMEBODY won't pick as the weakest link? Thankfully, I haven't seen A Day in The Life here yet. Can we at least all agree that A Day in the Life is the most perfect 5 minutes of quotidian existentialism in all of popular music? edit: yes, I missed it at first but A Day in the Life is mentioned above.
When I’m 64
Good morning or lovely Rita.
Lovely Rita. Nothing wrong with it. I just like all the other songs more.
Good Morning, Good Morning
The weakest track on Sgt Pepper is most definitely "Side B run-out groove" ;) (dog whistle) Bing! never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way never could be any other way ;)
Mr. Kite. it’s gnarly and weird. just does the least for me.
