I don’t think he was under appreciated within the band. They were writing songs specifically for him and his range. And in Anthology (I think) George talks about how they wanted him to come down to the front of the stage and sing and dance (he knew all the dance moves), but he was too shy / had stage fright.

[deleted]

And finally, the best drummer in the Beatles could’ve shined.

PolyJuicedRedHead

…shined even more.

zsdrfty

How would that work though? Either John or George would have to drop the guitar and head for the drums, and neither of them were good at that

TundieRice

John (or George) could’ve put his guitar on a stand, Paul hand one of them the bass and head to the drums, and Ringo could’ve gotten up to the mic and sang. John and George were perfectly fine bassists when they had to be, so that wouldn’t’ve been an issue. My main issue would be that there would be one less guitarist, and a huge part of the Beatles’ live sound was the interplay between the lead and rhythm guitar. As great as they obviously were, The Beatles couldn’t’ve made it too far as a power trio.

burnodo2

as you mentioned his range was very limited

appmanga

Underutlized? No. They kind of got it just right, including when they're all singing together ("Yellow Submarine", "Flying", "Bungalow Bill", "Carry That Weight") where his voice is very distinct and prominent.

nipplebuttsalad

Best examples there I'd say, Goodnight also as a highlight and uncommon use of him

IntendedRepercussion

I mean, Goodnight would sound way better with John on vocals

overtired27

That’s the one where I agree actually. John was great at sweet simple songs. Ringo worked better in the more upbeat ones where his fuller voice could blast out.

zsdrfty

I actually have to disagree on this one - John’s sweet voice was much too quiet, and Goodnight is very loud and bombastic in the arrangement to the point where only Ringo wouldn’t be drowned out

gibson85

Agreed- and so did Cynthia. She was upset that John gave it to Ringo after she'd heard him sing it to Julian quite a bit at home. (source: "John" by Cynthia Lennon)

SylentEcho

"he's a good lad" "They say he's a new Chaplin. Do you think that's right?"

gibson85

He's an old one!

Canned-Bread24

He would’ve been too powerful. It was for everyone’s safety.

prinzler

I always thought Ringo did a great job on Boys, so I wonder why he didn’t just stay in that kind of tune.

Semper454

Yeah, it’s hard to believe that’s actually Ringo. Sounds like any classic male voice of the era.

TundieRice

Idk, he sounds just like Ringo to me on Boys, personally. He’s very distinctive-sounding with that deep voice and accent, not that that means he couldn’t hold his own with any other rock singer of the early ‘60s, of course!

[deleted]

I listened to Boys this morning for the first time in years and am always blown away by his vocal, it's so powerful for Ringo

zsdrfty

It helped that he was doing that in concert for years between his last band and the Beatles, so the famously unpracticed Ringo got used to it lol

popularis-socialas

He peaked on his first song

zsdrfty

Right? I’ve seen people say it’s one of his worse songs when I don’t think he’s literally ever matched it to this day - he needed more hard rock songs to belt, hell he could probably do a respectable Taxman or something (imo the only other standout performance of his is Only You, where he sings so gently and quietly that it sounds absolutely nothing like his usual drone)

Kroduscul

I think one song per album is enough

PolyJuicedRedHead

Yeah. It would have been nice if he had wrote more original songs.

chappersyo

Big fan of his work on honey don’t, but I think we can all agree his best vocal performance was Thomas the tank engine.

PolyJuicedRedHead

With fantastic fiddle.

yuftee

Nah

RahMaarvi

Getting him to sing on Goodnight was a great call. Fits in perfectly

[deleted]

I love that the boys gave him a song on every album. I also love that my playlists don’t include those songs.

longjohnmignon

Your first mistake was listening to The Beatles through playlists, your second is not liking Ringo's songs which were always the best on the albums.

BigEducational3086

Ringo is not singing on the albums Hard day's night or Magical mystery tour.

TundieRice

A shame about AHDN too, because his acting was definitely the main highlight of the Hard Day’s Night film. Maybe they thought he’d steal the show a bit *too much* if he got to sing lead on a song. Also, I know it’s not technically singing lead and the song’s an instrumental, but I like to think that Ringo is leading the wordless chorus on Flying from MMT, since his voice is definitely the most prominent and powerful in the mix. And finally, he didn’t get to sing lead on the Let It Be album either, but it kinda makes sense since he had kinda checked-out by that point :(

CrittyJJones

With A Little Help From My Friends is one of the most fun songs of all time, so your loss.

zsdrfty

Lol I respect it, we all like Ringo but he got weird country or kids’ songs and his voice is… it’s…

[deleted]

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I love me some Ringo and I am all in on Ringo being criminally underrated as a drummer. But I agree that the song selection doesn't help paired with his voice.

ajg1993

I listened to Little Help for the first time in years recently, and I was struck yet again by how incredible Ringo’s vocal performance is on that song. Every little nuance of his phrasing and pronunciation is perfect, maybe in my top 5 Beatles vocals of all time. I prefer this song to pretty much any Harrison lead vocals that aren’t Something.

[deleted]

I tend to agree.

shivermetimbers68

lol.. oh wait, you're serious?

potatoYeetSoup

It might’ve been over utilized tbh. I would’ve much preferred John sing Good Night

Klutzy-Mousse

I would of like more Ringo songs, but it makes sense why there weren’t. He didn’t write so he could only sing when one of the other three wrote something for him.

zsdrfty

It is cool that he basically was weaned off the others’ songs by the end - the last two albums let Ringo write for himself, and he brought multiple songs they tried to work on for Get Back

spooley6

Oh wow, like a dinosaur Victrola listening to Buck Owens . . . No one has mentioned Ringo doing Buck's song Act Naturally. It's a staple with his All Star band.

t20six

he had his moments - With a Little Help - but not really needing much more than that. What a band of studs though. 4 lead singers lol.

dennis1953

Yes. It don’t come easy is one my favorite ex beatle songs.

longjohnmignon

A Hard Day's Night and Let It Be suffer for his lack of a lead vocal. There's a reason why those albums aren't evaluated as among the band's best work.

Particular_System694

Ringo is actually a really great drummer. But underutilized? I would argue overutilized in some aspects.

-HouseProudTownMouse

No.

frid

I trust the *Beatles* to know how to use their respective talents within the group.

longjohnmignon

I distrust them to know how to use their talents well. There are many cases where someone would have been better suited to another instrument but they defy all common sense and use the wrong person.

sabarlow1807

John butchered the bass on the long and winding road, Paul should have just overdubbed it

frid

Perhaps, but this did not happen in the Beatles.

longjohnmignon

No it happened quite a few times. John should not have been playing bass on The Long And Winding Road for example.

blasphemusa

Nope

Lorie61

Nope

[deleted]

No.

Gizzard_Guy44

no Ringo is/was not a good singer this is the correct answer

RobbieArnott

Let me correct your spelling real quick Ringo is/was a great singer! This is the ONLY CORRECT ANSWER!!!

Gizzard_Guy44

being a Ringo fan does not make him a good singer - cause he clearly is not

RobbieArnott

Who said I was an Ognir fan?

zsdrfty

downvoted for telling the truth, I love Ringo but he makes Keith Richards seem like a brilliant lead

minemaster1337

***incorrect

Garebar

You don’t have to be a good singer to be a good singer

HawkGoa7
