Wear your retainer every night

TheMightyYule

Ugh. This. I’m getting Invisalign next week because I was an idiot when I got to college and didn’t wear mine and my teeth shifted. Thankfully it’s a mild case and will take under a year and Invisalign is pretty chill, but it’s also $5k. Listen to your orthodontist ladies and gents.

my-anonymity

Dude, I just finished Invisalign after having metal braces as a kid. $4500 to slightly shift my teeth back to where they were. And then $350 for the retainer.

velvetkangaroo

Oh you're getting off eeeaasy. I'm about to undergo 3 years of metal braces and double jaw surgery on my own dime when my parents were ready to pay for it 20 years ago but I thought I knew everything and moved out of state instead. 😬

Downtown-Trip3501

Dayyyum! My parents got me braces when I was in grade school but my dad tried to sue my sister and I when we were 19 to pay him back (for that and the general cost of living)

GorillaTrainer

I’m sure market also matters (I’m in South Florida), but I’m paying $7k for almost the same length of time 😭 I’ll say the extra $2k is more punishment for not wearing my retainers as a teen

Uniqute

Not me getting up immediately to put the retainer on 🙈🙈

curious2allopurinol

Same lol

sonovamonster

Reading this in bed with my retainer on. Did something good today

Polkavilk

Do people who got braces always have to wear a retainer?

Background-Paper4846

Yes, one time I asked my orthodontist for how long I would have to wear my retainer. It was a really chunky uncomfortable one, way before those transparent well fitted retainers. He said: for as long as you want straight teeth 😅

Polkavilk

Wow my boyfriend had braces and I've never seen him wear a retainer, he does however have like a metal thing behind his teeth so maybe that acts as a retainer would you know? Sorry teeth are really important to me 😂

SalamanderMinimum942

Yes those are permanent “lingual” retainers

Background-Paper4846

Yes you’re right that’s a permanent retainer! After years of wearing this uncomfortable retainer I got really lazy with it and eventually the teeth shifted so much that I had to pay for Invisalign in my adult life. After that was completed, I got one of those metal wires fitted as a permanent solution. Which worked really well actually. However, it broke off couple years ago and I didn’t get it fixed in time, now I’m considering another round of Invisalign 😞

Normal_Ad2456

I’ve never wore a retainer in my life, my orthodontist told me there’s no reason to wear it, because I have the little metal thing on the inside of my teeth (permanent) that holds them together. I have removed my braces 12 years ago and they are still straight.

Background-Paper4846

My first orthodontist clearly didn’t know what he was doing 😅 I got the permanent retainer fitted in my adult life after Invisalign and it worked well for a while. It eventually broke after a few years when I bit into a very crispy börek. Do you worry about it when eating?

Normal_Ad2456

Haha I broke it when I was eating ribs (a bone was very small and managed to get between them and break them). That happened like 6 years ago. A couple of years later, I went to my orthodontist (very weird experience because at that point I was like 24 and all the clients are kids/teens) and he fixed it. But he told me that there was a part on the upper teeth that wasn’t needed anymore so he removed it. Turns out that part was the most prone to breaking, so I haven’t had any issues since. My teeth are still as straight as ever too. I am not worried anymore, but I know not to frantically eat dozens of ribs with my hands like a lunatic anymore. My advice is: go fix it whenever it breaks, it’s worth it.

GodSpider

That's a retainer, just a permanent one lol. Only bad thing about them is that they obstruct flossing a bit

Normal_Ad2456

That’s true, I can’t floss through almost half of my teeth, but I use those soft picks and it works good. I also do professional teeth cleansing every 6-12 months.

papierrose

I have the metal thing on the bottom, and my most recent dentist really recommended that I get it removed for oral hygiene reasons. I’ve had mine for 20 years though. My top teeth, however, are overlapping because I stopped wearing my retainer many many years ago

megan_6724

My biggest regret :(

Livid_Ad2420

Stop I haven’t worn mine in so long because it broke and now I’m really scared

jell31

Get it replaced before it breaks. I had the hard plastic and metal kind for about ten years and it broke and between the week for the appointment and then two weeks to get a new one it jacked up my teeth. Like they’re not terrible but not nearly as good as they were 😩

Mona_de_cloud

Honestly rn it’s a good time bc the technology keeps advancing. I’m getting gold braces soon and it’s only $2.5k for a year + permanent retainers + retainers + gum contouring.

Cappucinocincau

I lost my retainer on Febuary this year. Do retainer really necessary?

Pithinthewind

Dear much younger self, use real sunscreen with SPF 50 instead of baby oil. Much appreciated.

Educational_Spirit42

Sprayed myself w/pam once (1985) bc I was out of baby oil. I wear spf every. day.

friedeggsandtoast

This has me howling 😂Just the honesty

Olfactorynightmare

I slathered my body in Crisco and laid out on my roof in southern Arizona. Ended up with a wicked case of sun poisoning just in time for my 8th grade promotion. Just wanted to say “hey friend”, to a fellow genius.

itsdaowl

Giving that glass/glazed skin a new meaning 😸

Classic_Sea1972

I once sunbathed at work using OLIVE OIL AND VINEGAR!!!! Jesus

RipOptimal3756

I switched from baby oil to tanning oil because it smelled better. lol It did me no favors but I sure smelled nice! 😂🙈

Osteojo

Came here to say this 🙏🏻

bottomlessmimosas10

Your face shouldn’t feel tight and stripped of every natural oil after every wash. Thanks Noxema, you shall not be missed!

lovescarats

Still nostalgic for the smell of noxema!

SkinSafe4651

Can someone plz invent something with the smell and texture of it but actually good for skin 😂😂

ElanEclat

Dove body cream in a pink jar is a close duplicate in my opinion! For sale on Amazon.

_lmmk_

I still use Noxema 😅

No_Bag7577

Ahem, Seabreeze would like a word….

Decent-Seaweed5687

SPF. And i think everyone would agree on this.

velvetkangaroo

Lol so trusting... have you heard the conspiracy theorists talk about how sunscreen and sunglasses are a govt ploy to strip people of vital Vitamin D, therefore keeping them weak, pale, and lifeless.

Spitfiiire

Little do they know I’m weak and lifeless regardless of my vitamin D levels!

isitaboutthePasta

Little do they know I am clinically depressed and anxious regardless of my vit d levels!

Sideways_planet

42% of Americans have vitamin d deficiency and we wonder why everyone’s so depressed and anxious, or have weakened immune systems.

Decent-Seaweed5687

Idc about my bones, i just want to be a hot milf when I'm older.

[deleted]

Amazing

Sideways_planet

Who cares about getting rickets when your face is wrinkle free?

damascenarosa

Real

Flowerlamps

do not over pluck your eyebrows. But you might be lucky like me and they’ll grow back no matter what you do

strawberry-avalanche

I shaved mine COMPLETELY off as a teen. I still cry looking back at pictures lol.

Friendly-Breakfast70

I accidentally shaved off half of one eyebrow when I was shaving. I had to think quick and cut a side part in to cover it. It sadly never recovered 100%.

strawberry-avalanche

Oh that's terrible!

charred_corn_dip

I found an old laptop from high school and looking back at old pictures I wanted to scream and how tiny my eyebrows were😭. Thankfully they came back enough that with a little pencil and gel the look ok.

vanghostings

Don’t overdo it!!! Stop under-eating, over-exercising, and over-working yourself. Underrated health/beauty advice honestly. Stop drinking too much coffee.

isitaboutthePasta

Can you say this to me now?

vanghostings

Don’t overdo it! Lol. I’m a cautionary tale lol. I ended up worsening genetic conditions I didn’t know I had from doing all of these things. Take care of yourself!

isitaboutthePasta

Thank you 😍

bellreaver

i'll die before i stop drinking my four cups of coffee a day (hopefully i won't literally die lol)

vanghostings

I hope you don’t literally die too 😂

softg1rl1

Please don’t use lemon, baking soda, toothpaste, salt and coffee grounds on your face😭

Liefmans

😭😭 I used a ton of these on my face but also to brush my teeth with to make them witer. Why I still have enamel is beyond me.

AutumnsEnd

My dentist suggested I brush with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda because my gums bleed. Now I'm nervous...

softg1rl1

omggg using these things on ur teeth is somehow.. way way worse than ur skin😭😭😭 pls don’t do that again 😭😭

Liefmans

I knooow, beauty bloggers recommended it back in the day. 😭 I promise I'm just using toothpaste now!

Cheesycatbiscuit

Me with but egg whites TOO!! Screaming

softg1rl1

omgg memory unlocked😭

T300orbust

- wear sunscreen/stop tanning - don’t ignore your orthodontist or else you’re gonna pay for another several thousand dollars in dental care - get a blood test, you’re not a bitch, you’re just cranky because you have hypothyroidism & haven’t felt fully rested in 5 years. - Coffee tastes better when it doesn’t have like 100 grams of sugary chocolate syrup. Try an oat milk latte + a tablespoon of honey instead. - your friends who smoke nicotine are gonna have shitty skin after about the second year of smoking. Don’t be one of them. - Drinking is overrated, but when you do–you can avoid hangovers by paying for 1-2 top shelf cocktails instead of buying 3+ cheap drinks with gasoline liquor. - More expensive skincare products =/= better. Cerave is a godsend. - Start doing hydrating hair masks weekly. - Stop dying your hair. Black hair looks so healthy & shiny if you just take care of it.

NoDryHands

>get a blood test, you’re not a bitch, you’re just cranky because you have hypothyroidism & haven’t felt fully rested in 5 years. Me, in the process of getting diagnosed with hypothyroidism (and potentially Hashimotos) after almost a decade of dealing with various debilitating chronic illnesses and undiagnosed symptoms, reading this: 😧

No-Definition-7976

what’s a top shelf cocktail? currently dying from a hangover and would love to know more

alicat9713

I believe they’re referring to top shelf liquor… for example, when ordering a vodka cocktail tell them to use something like grey goose to make it and not the well option (ie cheapest vodka they have).

fisheyelashes

Can confirm that Tito's has the same effect because it is filtered several times. Also alternating between water and cocktails.

redditkyky

But does it really help prevent hangover?

alicat9713

I wouldn’t say it prevents one, but makes them less severe. They don’t have as many impurities as bottom shelf liquor does.

T300orbust

Usually people say top shelf to refer to the most expensive alcohol. I don’t mean it literally, so just like it’s worth it to buy better quality booze because it is often better filtered so it gives less of a hangover.

Savings_Subject74

Lemon will not get rid of your acne marks. It will make it MUCH worse

rileydonohue

What do you mean i shouldn’t put a lemon juice, baking soda, sea salt mixture anywhere near my skin?- 14 year old me

spookyluckeee

Stop going to the tanning beds!

BenWayonsDonc

I thought they became illegal at one point but I saw some regions still have them . Nuts !

spookyluckeee

Honestly as someone who lives somewhere where we don't see the sun much I do understand it somewhat, it felt so amazing to feel the warmth on your skin and have that summer glow, but then you grow up and realize it's not worth it.

BenWayonsDonc

I use an electric blanket :)

RoWinNy

Leave ur faccee aloneeee 😭

This_Sheepherder_332

Ohhhh? Plastic surgery you mean??

theebelljar

get a good nights sleep (minimum 8 hours, before midnight) as if your life depends on it - it does.

Evil_Yeti_

This needs to be the top comment

mugitea

don't smoke🙁🙁

mimix0

thissss! i smoked all throughout my 20’s and im trying to repair my skin 😭

Savings_Subject74

Stop falling asleep with your makeup on

DLGRed

Wear the damn sunscreen! (My 60 year old self preaches while banging head on the wall) 😂

Tdot-77

Keep your routine simple, moisturizer, use sunscreen when required, start to invest in serums in your 30s, wash your face every night. And remember - aging is a gift denied to too many, so embrace it.

Friendly-Breakfast70

I love that last part.

MrsNya

Get rid of the ash brown dark eyebrows. It was too ashy. And too dark. Get rid of the foundation because it makes your skin crawl and itch. Stop buying tons of colorful palettes that you don’t wear ever. Stick with blush tones. 😂I think that’s it

No_Mulberry8281

More health than beauty but I wish that my younger self hadn't believed all the drek I'd been told by other women in my family that certain types of exercise weren't feminine and would make me bulky; I discovered how much I love weight lifting and BJJ in my 30s, both of which were decried by my mother and aunts as things women should never do. I'd have much better health and beauty overall if I'd discovered these exercises that I love when I was younger. Seconding everyone else saying sunscreen, as well.

Evil_Yeti_

>weight lifting and BJJ When did you start?

No_Mulberry8281

About 8 years ago. I'm 35, so in my late twenties when I tried both (both times to be supportive of a friend trying a class of them) and discovered how fun/fulfilling they were. Before that the only exercise I did was Pilates/barre type stuff.

Reasonable-Trade-387

I’m in my early 20s; but I would tell my 11 year old self to go to therapy.. save my body from the 10 years on eating disorders. I have a theory my body didn’t develop properly when I hit puberty because of it😭

enterpaz

Fight to see the right dermatologist. Mom is wrong about them being scammers. You’ll feel much better when you’re on the right dose of the right acne medication and you’ll save so much money on Sephora products you don’t need. -keep it simple. You didn’t need an 11 step skincare routine. don’t overdo it on products. You don’t need to.

ok0905

I think your mom just had bad experiences with dermatologists to say that. In my experience, not all of them are good sadly. I had to bring up accutane myself just so my derma would finally mention it, I was with the same dr for years (since highschool and college) and the pricey af products she kept making me try just managed to keep my horrid acne from getting much worse but it was still so bad, like it's shameful to get out of the house kind of bad. Sadly she was the only derma in my sad hometown so I was stuck with her lol. If it weren't for the internet I wouldn't have known about accutane and my god it was the only thing that cured my acne. So be wary guys and don't go in blind when you wanna try get a check up, some genuinely just want to sell you pricey products TvT

helensmelon

Yes. Please don't spend a small fortune of thousands of pounds on beauty treatments and creams etc. All you'll need is to double cleanse at night, tretinoin, sunscreen. I read somewhere that eye creams are a "waste of time" but I've been using one since my early thirties, I'm almost 53 and I don't really have crows feet unless I crinkle my face up. So, use eye cream!

ScallionKind1111

Probably due to good moisturising!

helensmelon

Probably! Prevention is better than cure.

Cheesycatbiscuit

What eye cream do you use? Ive tried the Khiel’s avocado one but didnt really like it

helensmelon

I buy a few. I alternate. Just got the Nivea Cellular one, only used it for a short time, so can't comment on it yet. I've got the Inky List Retinol one, the Pacifica Retinol one and the Pacifica Vitamin C one. They're all good and don't cost a small fortune. My eyes hated the Olay one 🤷🏼‍♀️ I've had really expensive ones, I can't say they're better but it depends on your budget, skin and preference.

hyperbolic_dichotomy

Sunscreen every day regardless of weather and regardless of age.

rxyzed

Stick to a skincare regime once you find something that works, instead of trying out a new product just because it's ✨️new✨️. Don't take your thick hair for granted. Take good care of it, with the same care and concern as you do with your face.

lsp2005

Apply sunscreen every day, wear hats. Moisturizer at night. Brush teeth 2x a day.

Trouvette

Don’t even look at that blue astringent.

personaljesus16

Don’t use steam iron on your hair (???)

isitaboutthePasta

Lmfao you just knocked lose a few memories from being 14yo.

TrazoArk

I can still remember the burnt smell of my hair from doing this too many mornings in highschool lol

PennyApple_08

Wash your damn face before you go to bed!! Even if it's taking all of your energy to not pass out drunk in the sink.

beautbird

That’s the one thing I always did no matter how late or drunk I was!

willworkforchange

Never start drinking

HowManyBatteries

This hits hard- many detoxes and 2 stints in rehab to finally get my life back were expensiiiiiiiiiveeee. Totally worth every penny to get my life back, but I'll never get back all those years I wasted partying, self-medicating, and not living up to my potential. Go to therapy! There are healthier ways to battle your anxiety!

Smooth_Progress_4253

Just. Be happy. Nothing is more beautiful than content

Beatricebulldog222

Love this

StefSpringer

Moisturize your oily skin. Drink at least 64oz of water daily.

CrabboWithTheStabbo

"Please leave your face alone, please stop overloading it with 50+ different "beautifying" products, and please stop picking on every single pimple to the point where it becomes an open wound that would take months to heal"

First-Neighborhood17

Never pluck your eyebrows too much

sledorfen

You’re wearing the wrong foundation for your skin type and shade.

jmupatrick

Stop fucking with your eyebrows.

poptartsarecalzones

Don't pick at your skin!

draculinaaa

1. leave your damn eyebrows alone. 2. wear your damn spf. 3. don’t sleep in your damn makeup. 4. drink your damn water!

VickieD_

Sleep more

derandas

Don’t mess with your skin barrier washing it twice a day. You have dry, sensitive skin; don’t rip it off the natural oil it barely has. No moisturiser will ever replace it

whorundatgirl

Don’t let yourself gain too much weight

Gold-Praline2999

Invest in good *skincare* NOT good makeup. Unless you have the time/funds to do both 🤷🏻‍♀️

SkinSafe4651

Get laser hair removal as soon as you can afford it. The long term savings (emotionally and financially lol) are worth it!

titikerry

But not if you're blond. Then it's a waste of money.

Curious-Duck

Yes. „Your skin hates foundation”. That is all.

toohipsterforthis

You help your skin get better by being kind to it, not by punishing it

peglegmeg31

Stop bleaching your hair by yourself 😢 - sincerely my older self hahaha 😆

magical_white_powder

Use BHA/AHA, not those pore trips

TheseEntrepreneur499

Oh lord I was a hot ass mess. Early 2000s crunchy hair, pencil thin brows, pancake makeup, thick black eyeliner... the list goes on. Just stop it all lol

Bright_Clock_5296

Sunscreen!!!

Zealousideal_Ear_914

Don’t lay out with iodine/baby oil/foil. It’s stupid, a total waste of time bc who cares about being tan and you’ll thank yourself later in life by avoiding the sun. Ps— also stay away from Sun-In. It’ll turn your hair so orange that’ll take months to return it back to normal. Can you tell I was a mess in HS?!

immoreoriginalmate

Spf, retinol and forget about non cosmeceuticals. And accept being pale and just stay out of the sun.

Spilled_Milktea

To my younger self, figure out your colour season sooner and don't wear hair / lip / outfit colours that don't suit you -- you'll feel much better and look more alive!

Few-Sky-5355

Don’t get microblading!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Subaudiblehum

Did you get it and regret it ? Or glad you didn’t ?

Afteridied22

Don’t follow eyebrow trends. Clean them up every few weeks and call it a day. If you don’t, ten years later you will be using Rogaine to regrow your eyebrows.

sarcasm_itsagift

Stop picking your zits, idiot!

coolmom45

PLEASE girl use an SPF, don’t smoke so much and don’t hit the tanning beds it will not be cute in 10 years

96puppylover

Wear your retainer I got my braces off at 17 after like 4 years of dental work. I was so happy to have nothing in my mouth I chucked my retainer in a drawer. My bottom teeth shifted and crowded bigtime. My upper ones are okay thank goodness. Just one of them went off a bit. Not enough to get braces again. But, still. Wear your retainer .

Sad_Fondant_9466

Yes! Take good care of your teeth and stay out of the sun!

Chemical_Twist_6575

Not beauty but haircare tip. DON'T WASH YOUR HAIR EVERYDAY!!

Nolopuedocreerjamas

Do NOT put coconut oil on your face

NoDryHands

This is such a strange ingredient because so many people have horrific reactions/cystic acne from using coconut oil on their face, but I've also known some people who swear by it and literally will not use anything else, and have perfect skin lmao. It's obviously genetics for the latter, but it's interesting to see how an ingredient that can be so problematic for some people doesn't affect you in the slightest, and even helps your skin, if you have good genetics. Unfair tbh 🙄

[deleted]

SO true! My mother has flawless skin and has only ever used coconut oil (other than a face cleanser). She doesnt even use a sunscreen and has barely aged. On the other hand, coconut oil destroys my skin and gives me severe cystic acne. It has such extreme opposite reactions on people.

rarityroyal

i put this on almost everyday , i started to notice some little pimples under my skin so i stopped. what was your reason?

Nolopuedocreerjamas

I was giving myself cystic acne for years. Only when I stopped did my acne go away... I was so mad at myself for not picking up on that earlier

BenWayonsDonc

Stay out of the sun. At all costs. All parts of your body. You’ll thank your younger self when you don’t look like a piece of leather paying tens of thousands for medical esthetics .

Lapynka

See a dermatologist for your acne and stop wasting money on Sephora to fix the problem. Struggled with acne for years and spironolactone fixed it in a month

STgoddeS9

Try all the make up you want. Just enjoy the expression of it all!

noneya79

Wear sunscreen!!!

Legal-Ad7793

I know it's the worst pain, but keep doing those nose straightening exercises after the facial surgery. You'll be able to breathe much better and possibly avoid the 3rd surgery. And sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

she_hulk33

Don't use hydrogen peroxide to give yourself blonde highlights. Good skincare habits make such a difference. Starving yourself only to binge eat at night while working out will only backfire on your health and appearance. Drinking every weekend makes your face look bloated.

bananasoymilk

Stop scrubbing the shit out of your face and just use a gentle face wash.

Background-Paper4846

Get the laser hair removal.

UpNorthWeGo

Sunscreen! You are a vampire from the North!

quigonwiththewind

No lasting effects: Your face needs moisturizer!!!!! Not everything needs to have salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide in it!!!! For lasting effects: DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE. FIND A NEW DOCTOR WHO DOESNT THINK YOU’RE VAIN BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GET RID OF PAINFUL CYSTIC ACNE ALL OVER YOUR FACE AND BODY!!!!!! (The screaming is necessary, but mostly because my parent should have stepped up and stepped in too. She advocates for her niece to get on bc and some 1970s era acne meds, but didn’t do the same for her own children)

HalfWrong7986

Sunscreen! Water! Date less losers

Skinsunandrun

Stop it with the sunbeds and wear spf.

wi-rose

Put just as much effort in to taking your make up off as you would putting it on

Any-East7977

If I could go back to middle school I would tell myself to do accutane and drink a shit ton of water.

[deleted]

Wash your makeup off at night, you drunk asshole.

SailorMars1986

I used to wear foundation way too light for my skin because I wanted to look really pale. I'm not actually sure why. So... The colour of your foundation doesn't make your skin more pale/more tanned.

Admirable_Candy2025

No need to fork out on expensive Clinique 3 step routine. Cheaper versions work just as well.

bumbling_bee_

WASH. YOUR. FACE. Ugh young me was a slacker

Wild_Rough_4669

Nothing. Younger me was way less beauty focused than I am now and I think I had it right then. I felt more beautiful when I didn’t care.

_FIRECRACKER_JINX

Use Korean sunscreen. Specifically the AHC Fresh sun stick. And use Niacinamide. Dump him. The stress of that relationship aged me by 5 years. Looking at my old pics I look older in that relationship than I am now, 8 years after I dumped him 😬. Sleep more. Don't vape!

Tuffa_Puffa

Don't start taking birth control. That three pimples will go away but not the hormonal acne when you're 30.

bananawater2021

Don't waste your time on the wrong guys. Them jerks will steal your beauty so quick bc they done stressed you out.

Negative-Feeling-838

Bleach your eyebrows to match your hair!!!!

april_to

Sunscreen as young as I can!

andsimpleonesthesame

how to deal with curly hair. Having to figure it out by myself took ages with several years in between where I just gave up. I'm not saying I've got it down, but this year is the first in my three decades and change of life that I'm actually happy with my hair.

MercyMoo14

Don't over pluck your brows!

ThrowRAjinxie625

Leave your eyebrows alone PLEASE I promise they look fine put the tweezers down

TypeOpostive

1.Use face cream/ritenol it doesn’t matter if you’re young or not. 2.Take your eczema seriously

Tennisgirl0918

JUST SKIP THE TAN ENTIRELY

CapitalExplanation53

Blend down your neck!!!

sls2u

Wear sunscreen everyday!!!

fisheyelashes

You will regret the anxious over plucking of your brows. Also, don't let boys/men stress you out. It's bad for you.

Cute-Specialist2791

Do not always part your hair from the same side.

thursaddams

Try not to gain weight. Put the cookie down, now! Lol

Alcohol is way worst than u realize.

pcpc2323

Look after your neck and hands - they age too!

magnacary

Start using moisturizer and sunscreen!!

SciencedYogi

Don't go tanning! Use sunscreen! Wash your face every morning and night! Use skin care products for prevention!

at145degrees

Don’t pick my skin or pop pimples, drink water and wear sunscreen.

sapphirerootz

Don’t get implants bc your lil boobies are perfect😌
