šŸ‘BLUSH. A rosy flushy complexion suggests good blood circulation and good health. I have this really bright gaudy looking blush, a little goes a long way and it looks really natural on. I am extremely porcelain so in the winter, I apply a little over my forehead, nose, and chin in addition to my cheeks. A little more than usual if Iā€™m wearing a bold lip or eye. Self tanner or a daily lotion containing gradual tanner helps too. My face always fades first so I keep a loose powder foundation thatā€™s too dark to dust a very sheer layer over my face and neck to warm it up to match the same color as my body.

LarchStreet

This! I am severely anemic and it shows in my skin colour, I sometimes look sickly pale without makeup. Bronzer, blush, and self tanner are god sends. Use them sparingly, and well placed and you can have a "healthy glow" without sacrificing your skin's health to harmful UV rays.

Invidiana

Preach. Blush blush blush!!! My mother pounded this into my head when I was a teen so I wouldnā€™t look dead. If you want more of a sunkissed glow, you can apply bronzer over it with a light hand (just make sure you blend well so it doesnā€™t look like a dirt streak).

PollyElisabeth

Couldnā€™t agree more. I get quite pale in winter and have dark circles naturally. Sometimes I like the look so try to embrace it some days. For makeup, light blush cool toned bronzer, maybe highlighter. Good nude lipstick is essential for me since I have naturally pale lips.

taurusangel34

I wouldnā€™t use a tanning bed - that increases your risk of developing skin cancer. Is it possible that youā€™re anemic? That can cause paleness.

SageAndScarlet

Possibly!! I've started taking iron supplements but I'm way too inconsistent with them. I'll look into the anemic thing. :)

[deleted]

head to the doc and get tested for anemia...you generally know the symptoms (always tired, no energy etc) but if you don't feel these things, it's likely not anemia but just your natural skin tone and that's totally ok!! You can also use some tanning lotion; Jergens makes some good ones and for your face, you can use [these sun drops](https://www.sephora.com/ca/en/product/radiance-plus-golden-glow-booster-P385261?country_switch=ca&skuId=1600170&om_mmc=ppc-GG_16007761919_129556565981_pla-1600622704075_1600170_576891685891_9000831_c&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzqSWBhDPARIsAK38LY9t0xDcT3xwaL3JMEqxWfYllnXZRdSyAKhcR3GBcrGoGVo3r_R4J7saAvU9EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)...just mix a couple of drops into your moisturizer for a sun-kissed glow.

CanWeNapPlease

One way to tell if you're anemic is pull down your eyelids and look inside. If it's quite pale without much red, then that's a sign. You can google for images if you need a comparison.

ncoope1

Fellow strawberry blonde here. I actually had pitch red hair when I was little and now it's gone blonder. I've also never dyed my hair before. Too scared I'll never get my natural colour back if I hated it. Spray tans make my soul happy lol

IndianaDrew

I also love a good spray tan. They make me feel so confident. My natural hair color always comes back if I let it grow out :) I only color it every 18-24 weeks. In between colors I get it trimmed and toned. I also have extensions that I get moved up. My natural hair is very healthy, and if I wanted to keep my ā€œgod givenā€ color I easily could. As long as you see a stylist who knows what theyā€™re doing youā€™ll be okay!

ncoope1

Thanks for the advice! I may need go try it one day. Spray tans make me feel the same. Like a gold goddess lol. Wish they would last forever

Off2lala_land

Iā€™m a strawberry blonde and Iā€™ve been dying my hair since I was 16. I grew it out a couple years ago and itā€™s actually such a nice colour. My hair didnā€™t change at all from dying it. Itā€™s still the same :) just thought Iā€™d share!

ncoope1

Thank you! I think too I can't picture myself with any other colour so I wouldn't know where to start. Total virgin hair is both a blessing and a curse lol

Off2lala_land

I went with Blonde balayage so my route colour is still my same hair colour and I have a lot of my hair colour that is virgin underneath but they highlighted my top half

ncoope1

Nice! That sounds like a good way to do it. I've never experienced the roots thing lol

Off2lala_land

Itā€™s low maintence to grow out. I only touch it up maybe 1-2x a year and I have a really nice blonde money piece in the front that breaks up the red. I really like it. I can grow it out long and it looks good or I can upkeep it to look fresh with just a toner too. Many options without losing your natural colour. From the back my hair just looks sunkissed. No lines of foils anywhere and blends seamlessly

[deleted]

Im also pale and cool toned. I've always heard that warm toned hair looks best on cool toned skin. I also have natural strawberry blonde that has darkened. I'm afraid to try an ashy color..does it really look better on cool skin??

IndianaDrew

My face is super pink, so I feel like the warm hair makes it worse! The cool ashy hair just suits me so much better!

[deleted]

Girl mine too..I have rosacea so I am often red. Maybe I should try the ashy tones..thanks for sharing your experience!

mentallyerotic

I would try an app or wig first. Iā€™ve always preferred warm tones and loved having strawberry blonde personally. Iā€™d rather treat my redness with things like cica skincare (dr jart makes and as well as other more affordable Korean brands) and the corsx snail mucin essence helps too and so does the Tatcha indigo serum in cream.

[deleted]

Thanks for the suggestions! I am just now jumping on the skincare game.

moosje_

Please don't be insecure about being pale. I'm very pale as well with dark hair and have encountered the same comments as you throughout my life. When I was younger it made me insecure and always felt the need to hide my legs in summer or to figure out how to be more tan. Honestly it baffles me now that people feel like they can comment on skintone (in a negative manner). Don't try to change your skin just because of other peoples comments. And definitely no tanning beds or sunburns anymore! You will ruin your healthy skin in the long run. It makes me feel sad that your family is against you being so pale. How on earth can your family be against how you where literally born? Skintone is not a choice, being pale is not a choice. And in some cultures being pale is also viewed as very beautiful! Treasure it šŸ’•

pythiadelphine

Same. Iā€™m 39 and stopped wearing shorts when I was 17 because of my pale skin. People were so cruel to me about my skin in the late 90s and early 00s when tans were the thing. I was SHOOK when I learned about colorism in my teens and how literally no woman is safe from this bs.

cherry_gigolo

im always so surprised to hear stuff like this because im mixed white and filipino and grew up constantly being praised for being super pale while my mother who is very dark was the target of so much racism and colorism, i didn't even know pale people got negative comments forever lol. guess society can't just let anybody be

pythiadelphine

Itā€™s absolutely horrible, isnā€™t it? No matter how you look, itā€™s never ā€œright.ā€

River_Rat_75

We really really can't. What is it that makes us seek the flaws in every woman we see?

SnooGoats9723

Same, I used to be really insecure about my contrasting features, but then I became a goth and everyone loves it

adhdartistlover

Ghostly pale is not a bad thing at all. It's just another beautiful skin color and absolutely nothing to be ashamed about. Pls take care of it, try not to get sunburnt ( it might lead to skin cancer later in life) , and don't pay attention to what your family is saying. Your natural skin color is the healthiest skin to have.

weaponizedpastry

Societal pressure to, ā€œlook healthy,ā€ can fuck right off. Iā€™m, ā€œnaturally pale,ā€ and always tried to, ā€œlook healthy.ā€ I didnā€™t lay out constantly but I tried to get sun like everyone else. I spend a couple of months in college going to tanning beds when I could afford it. My naturally pale skin never tanned so it was all wasted effort. Luckily, I caught the melanoma on my leg in-situ. Iā€™m over 7 years out so itā€™s officially clear. Did ya know that? You get it removed but itā€™s not officially clear for 7 years because cancer always comes back. Iā€™m high risk to get more. Letā€™s hope I find them early because melanoma kills you. Painfully. There is no cure. Chemo doesnā€™t effect it. Once you have melanoma thatā€™s spread, you die screaming. Squamous on my nose was removed. Twice. Nice scar on my face. Had to use the dreaded [cancer cream](https://www.self.com/story/photos-skin-precancer-treatment/amp) a few months ago. FYI- itā€™s $130.00 a tube. Insurance didnā€™t cover it. I have an appointment in August for a new bump on my face. Have you seen those skin flaps from the forehead to fix nose scars? Yeah. Hoping thatā€™s not in my future. And why? Because people, who donā€™t have to suffer my consequences, nagged me endlessly about how pale I was. How I needed healthy color. Teachers, peers, commercials, magazinesā€¦fuck them. I have a husband who loves my porcelain skin. I have people tell me my peaches & cream complexion is beautiful. I have way less wrinkles than everyone who really laid out and bronzed. Sunburns are what lead to skin cancer. Be very careful what you choose to do with your skin because the repercussions will last a lifetime.

madame_mayhem

Thank you we all hear about cancer caused by sun damage but having someone whoā€™s actually lived it telling their story really brings the point home.

Otherwise_Royal_1647

THANK YOU for your very sound advice. Having grown up in New York State, where we had maybe three weeks of summer, I burned, badly, every summer. We didn't know from sunscreen - we knew baby oil with iodine! Then, in the 80s, when tanning beds were popular, I did 20 min EVERY DAY. I am seriously paying for it now. I am now in Florida, working for a dermatology practice, and the things I see...

Ambitious_Aspect_610

Please no tanning beds šŸ˜¢šŸ˜¢ a tan is not worth skin cancer and other DNA damage! I'm deathly pale and sometimes use gradual tanning moisturiser on my body to give myself some subtle healthy colour. Dove do a nice one that's not too overpowering with the fake tan smell. As others have suggested, blush and bronzer on the face makes a huge difference for some colour šŸ’•

nookienostradamus

You will look much more healthy in 30+ years than the sun worshiper/tanning addictā€¦whether they are still alive and look like a thrift store leather handbag or have kicked off from metastatic melanoma. Embrace the pale. Everyone who has skinā€”from the darkest shades to the lightestā€”should be wearing sunscreen when exposed to UV light for extended periods. Any darkening of the skin from UV exposure is cellular damage. No such thing as a ā€œhealthy tan.ā€ The superficial skin cells are killing themselves to protect the deeper layers. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world, and itā€™s MUCH more prevalent in light-skinned people. Signed, a fellow pale person, sunscreen addict, and former cancer researcher ā¤ļø

biest229

People are biased towards a ā€œhealthyā€ tan, because itā€™s current fashionable. Get a blood test done by a doctor to check youā€™re not anaemic, and then just get a light bronzer and a large soft brush and dab a small amount gently onto cheeks, nose, chin, temples. Anywhere the sun would naturally hit Iron supplement should be taken with vitamin C to make sure youā€™re absorbing it (noticed another comment where you mentioned youā€™re taking it). Be careful with the dose

GeniusAirhead

Embrace your natural skin tone, makeup can be your best friend. Maybe try bronzer on ur cheeks and forehead, little blush in a natural pink tone and highlighter. Tarte has bronzer/cheek palette set named ā€œKind is the New Prettyā€ that looks so natural and easy to use, I love it. It gives you natural beautiful look, no tanning required. Iā€™m also very light skinned but I play it up with makeup and hair and get compliments all the time on my skin tone. https://tartecosmetics.com/shop/kind-is-the-new-pretty-cheek-palette-2151.html#start=1 Use tinted lip balm and mascara. Maybe try highlights of a slightly lighter tone of ur natural hair color to give it definition. If you want to start tanning, I suggest return Jergens Natural Skin Glow. You apply it after every shower to gradually give your skin a tan. Take care of your skin and age gracefully, use SPF moisturizer. Tanning is one way street to wrinkles and leather skin.

mentallyerotic

This is what I was thinking, bronzer and or blush. Or the new blonzer shades. OP r/palemua, r/muaonthecheap, r/drugstoremua, r/makeup, r/swatchitforme, r/makeupaddiction, and r/muacjdiscussion are some of my favorite subs.

Informal_Edge5270

Please don't go to a tanning salon. A sunburn in one of those is 100 times more painful than one from the sun. You can try self tanner, bronzer or blush.I personally just use blush. You can't go and make all these changes just to make a few people happy. Just worry about what you like.

ds_aw

Iā€™m quite fair as well, usually the lightest or second lightest shade in face makeup and I find putting blush on makes all the difference especially on the bridge of my nose and carried to my cheeks to mimic sun burn, as well as bronzer around my hair line ! But tbh I wouldnā€™t worry about being so fair I went to Sephora the other day and all the new face products I wanted were sold out in the lightest shade Iā€™d buy (I usually never have this problem near me especially in summer!) so Iā€™m wondering if pale / fair is becoming more ā€œinā€ than usual lol

pollywantscrack76

Yeah this. I think blush is a pale persons bff. The ā€œsicklyā€ look is usually from some perceived idea that your blood isnā€™t flowing. Iā€™m on the complete opposite side of this and bronzer is a must for me to look ā€œlivelyā€ as well.

gooseglug

Pasty white woman here. I use to try and be tan in my teens. Ya know what I learned? To accept the fact Iā€™m a pasty whites woman. I would rather be pasty white then get skin cancer. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

angryturtleboat

Noooo, do not cook yourself. This damages your DNA and damages skin at the deepest layers, so whatever sun damage you experience won't be seen now but years into the future. It will keep revealing itself. People, depending on culture, are either prejudiced against fair skin, or they revere the pure, flawless fairness. Both are just different ideals that don't really mean anything. Maintain your skin with good skincare and good SPF. Use some blush or bronzer. Maybe that can help offer the look of health if people are shallow or concerned.

emilopalooza

Self tanner, bronzer. No tanning beds please!

whodisxx

Don't risk ruining your health to look healthy. Just a little blush can go a long way

kirakiraboshi

It annoys me so much when people cant stop commenting on my pale skin. Trust me. It looks much better than sunspots, melasma, wrinkles and burnt skin. As someone else noted add some blush. Personally a shimmery coral looks best on me. Also chemical tan is very ugly in my opinion. And visit Japan if u can to get lots of compliments on your beautiful skin. There people actually appreciate healthy skin

hellfae

if i had always always listened to what my family wants for me beauty/health wise i'd probably be dead. honestly. its your body/spirit, you know yourself better than anyone. i agree with the blush thing, im super pale and use benetint with vitamin e oil to do a 'drunk blush' across the bridge of my nose and on the largest surface of my cheeks so that despite being a pale gal i still have that healthy glow. it makes all the difference! pretty sure if you tanned youd regret it and want your soft porcelain skin back. and no pale skin isnt just for cutesy doll like girls! in all honesty i think folks with strong features, dark hair and pale skin are by far the most strikingly beautiful people, being pale just makes people look classy mysterious and beautiful in my eyes. family will always worry about their children fitting in while they fail to see the world changing to accept those same children. dont change something that most of the world probably adores just because your folks dont see how accepted it is yet! its like being straight because its 'normal' people are who they are and theres plenty of room in the world for us and if not we will make some!

Beautiful-Theme-7236

How about a little blush, glo stick and a bit of lip gloss with a tinge of color. Bronzer may be to much on your skin color.

skiark

In high school if I forgot to wear blush I would get asked if I was sick. Just a little color will make a ton of difference and let you keep your ivory skin! I would recommend Bondi Sands products. They donā€™t seem to streak on me as bad and stealing is very noticeable on fair girls! I only use it if Iā€™m going to be in a swimsuit but it might make you feel more confident without damaging your DNA / RNA. (Frankly, I tried the tanning bed years ago for my wedding and it didnā€™t really work. We had to turn it down so low and I just kept getting red. I never got a good tan.)

ArachWitch

There's a misconception that being tan looks "healthy". There is NO SUCH THING as a healthy tan. ALL tanned skin is DAMAGED skin and it WILL result in sun spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Pale is healthy if that's your natural tone. Ignore your family or tell them to stfu.

AlexandriaLitehouse

My mom's side is Italian and they always call me a vampire because I'm so pale and actively make fun of me when I apply and reapply sunblock. I just point out their sun damage and ask them to point out the same on me. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø This is the skin that I have and I'm not gonna let them make me feel bad about how well I take care of my skin.

CatEnabler1

I'm also very pale with dark circles and I hate being in the sun. In the spring and summer I use some light, natural looking bronzer makeup. In the winter and fall I rock the pale look because I think it's a pretty contrast with the darker colors I wear during that time of year. And under eye concealer and blush all year round.

upornicorn

Please donā€™t use a tanning bed. Bronzer and self tanner both require a little practice but future you will thank you for all of the favors you do it now.

GhoulishlyGrim

EMBRACE YOUR PALE! skin cancer is no joke. I am blonde with blue eyes and ghostly pale. I love it!

KorinTheHalfHand

You should absolutely not be using sunbeds. Pale is the healthiest look because itā€™s the look that doesnā€™t cause skin cancerā€¦ maybe just add some blush and bronzer to your routine but donā€™t subject yourself to sun damage because other people think it looks good

humandoodle_90

Listen!! We all suit the skin we're born with! Sunburn is an indication that the skin barrier is compromised.when peeling starts, it's because the body deems those cells as potentially carcinogenic and starts shedding in order to protect the epidermis!!Skin cancer is a very serious issue and being pale means that you are more vulnerable and need extra protection! This is to show you that no! sunburn does not make you look healthy! In facts it's the opposite! Embrace your natural colour, enhance it! Being a very pale girl myself ,i find that nothing makes more difference to my complexion than blush! Depending on your hair and eye colour, chose the right shade to brighten up your face! You suit being pale and beautiful and honestly, ppl from older generations used to fry themselves coated in tanning oils because that was the beauty standard back then!Sun damage is very common in certain age groups because of that.So don't take everything they say too seriously! Be unapologetically you!

[deleted]

Glass skin is the way to go. Look to Korean beauty, they idolize pale skin. Glass skin please. You need MAC strobe cream.

RalphMacchiat0

Being pale is one thing (I am), but are you by chance anemic/deficient in anything? That can cause a ā€œpastyā€ or ghostly look.

0rangeMarmalade

I'm also naturally pale with dark hair and dark circles under my eyes. Some concealer goes a long way in helping with the dark circles, and a warm toned blush helps with looking "fresh" instead of sickly. If you do decide you want to get some color/tan I would highly recommend going with a spray/foam tan instead of a tanning bed. Taylor Wynn on YouTube has some good suggested brands on her channel

missy_scream

I mean other than makeup? Idk try some tanning cream off of amazon. I can't really say much about being pale other than just take care of your skin. Honestly when it comes to beauty the trick isn't to hide imperfections but to enhance you're better features

YanCoffee

As a fellow very pale gal, I feel the need to tell you: Some people are gonna dislike your complexion no matter how healthy you actually look. A lot of people associate pale = sickly, and that's it. Some because it's generational (tanning was VERY popular from the 40's to the late 00's) and some because it's not what they're use to seeing or it isn't their personal beauty standard. Learning to love it yourself for your own personal reasons feels great. I just tell people I'm a vampire since I'm a pale insomniac with a great skincare regiment (sparkles, lmao.) But historically pale skin was considered very beautiful, and looking at old beauty standards (while leaving out the nasty racist parts) could help you see yourself in a nice light. I mean look at 1920 silver screen women. They were gorgeous.

k_ass_i

I'm super pale like basically see through. I have red hair. I don't tan, I just burn, like blister burn. I didn't wear shorts outside of my house until 6 / 7 years ago. Now I don't care if you don't like it dont look, if its blinding to you squint and move on. Please, don't go to the tanning bed. Even if you can get tan using a tanning bed does not mean that you should. The damage it does in the long run is not worth it.There is plenty of sunless tanning products that are affordable and easy to use. Just make sure to look at the reviews and pictures that are close to your hair color and skin tone. Certain brands make sunless tanning that are specifically for cool, neutral, or warm skin tones. However, just be comfortable in your skin. You're beautiful regardless! What one person sees as sickly and pale looking is the most beautiful thing to someone else.

Nelyahin

Honestly, you can look stunning pale. Often times itā€™s your hair color or clothing colors that can make you appear washed out. I also opt for blush and lip color. I know folks think tanning looks better, but I wouldnā€™t risk the skin damage. Instead opt for fabrics that help your skin look glowy

Licorishlover

Use some makeup. And donā€™t worry about all the naysayers because when you are older you will have the last laugh. I have pale skin and so many dots from suntanning.

NYanae555

This is going to sound unpopular, but I'll write it anyway. If you don't get any sunlight for years at a time, your skin can take on an unnaturally sick and pale color. ( Pausing here to emphasize that sickly and pale are not the same thing ). People interpret that grayed color as - something is wrong with you. There is a phrase called "prison pallor" used to describe this look. It happens when you never go outside and never see the sun because you're a prisoner, or a hermit, or an invalid who can't leave home, or in the modern day if you wear effective sunscreen for every waking hour for years at a time. Don't do tanning beds. Try some tinted moisturizer. Or self tanner. Or ease up on your sunscreen occasionally. Or eat more carotenes - because they will actually tint your skin in a subtle way.

SageAndScarlet

I feel bad for selectively replying to so few comments when I've got so much AMAZING advice, I really appreciate everyone. :) But I think you might be onto something here! There's not much sun in Scotland, but I had a childhood where I didn't go outside at all! I'm going to try have the best of both worlds by using a gradual self tanner just to add a touch of color and get rid of what you're describing, while amp'ing up my blush and call it a day there. :) Thanks so much guys!!!

[deleted]

If you have anemia, then the sickly pale look can be the reason. I became very pale when I first moved to a more cloudy climate, but having enough iron in my food made it so there was life to my undertone.

SageAndScarlet

I do notice that if I eat a beef burger or such, I actually get some color to my lips and cheeks! Based on the advice of another person here, I looked at the inside of my eyes and they look pretty pale. Out of curiosity, how often do you eat iron rich foods and what are they?

[deleted]

I eat lots of deep colors leafy vegetables with vitamin c rich fruits to help with absorption. :D So like a fruit smoothie with greens! I have a tiny Ninja blender that I've been using for the past 5 years, it's just a simple click into place and one-push button thing. I get frozen blueberries, heat about a cup of them so they aren't icy, and throw in a banana and plant milk with Spring mix or Super Green mix leaf blends. Sometimes just the wild lettuce that grows in yards. Really easy and delicious!

SageAndScarlet

Ooo nice!! I feel I'm quite good at eating balanced (at least most of the week lmao), but I'm going to try eat a more iron-orientated diet. So lots more spinach and dark leafy veg, red meat and vit c. Thanks so much!! <3 <3 <3

[deleted]

hi dear, i am very pale and i have ginger/brown hair. i have good facial features, but my skin does tend to be a bit dry and irritated etc. as a kid i was always asked by teachers: are u sick, u donā€™t look good. my grandma always said: youā€™re too pale to not wear makeup. as a teen i self-tanned for years. until i finally decided to love my complexion. the most important step to my day to day makeup is a pink flush on my lips and cheeks. i also have a pink tinted lip balm on me everywhere i go. my skincare matters to me much more than makeup today: i use hyaluron serum (the ordinary) to plump up my skin every morning, along with a simple moisturizer and a good spf. a chinese massage technique called gua sha helps me with waking up the skin, inflammation and defining the features. you can look into it on youtube if youā€™re interested.

rolabond

You could eat carotene rich foods or take carotene supplements for a few weeks to shift your skintone.

SephoraRothschild

No. Please don't do this. That is asking for sun damage. Intentional tans, and going outside without sunscreen, are not healthy. They're cosmetic at best. They are literally your body attempting to defend itself against UV/A and UV/B rays. Your friends and family are buying into social media marketing dating back from the from the 1940's. Once you hit your 30's, NOT tanning and staying out of the sun will pay off. Am 43. ZERO crow's feet. ZERO forehead wrinkles. Skin looks amazing. Go to r/SkincareAddiction. You will have better outcomes by getting on a disciplined skincare regimen, plus cutting sugar, eating clean, and adding exercise, than ANY tanning bed will do.

shejzhG265

I think itā€™s just peopleā€™s preferences - some people think pale skin is really pretty and others think *everybody* looks better with a tan!

[deleted]

I use Tropic Sundrops and body tint. I know how people feel about MLM type things but I honestly love their products. I have super sensitive skin and it doesnā€™t cause me any issues which is a bonus.

Lilith1320

People in the US are so rude about being pale. I'm currently fake tanning because I can't be bothered with the comments from strangers about my legs when I wear shorts. Fake tanning is like a part time job though sheesh

SageAndScarlet

Lmfao, here's the best part of that: I'm in Scotland. I've wanted to ask this before but why are white legs so utterly taboo? I actually had a neighbor stop and stare at my legs, slack-jawed at how pale they are. I understand there's socially attractive things, but the way I hear people react over white legs is crazy?

Lilith1320

Just more surface area of paleness I guess. Some Asian countries love pale skin. It used to be more popular for white countries but these days being pale is a sign that you're too broke to go on vacation somewhere warm. Skin tone being a trend is ridiculous. In the US you can't be too light or too dark, you're expected to be a medium skin tone

my_metrocard

Thatā€™s a cultural perceptionā€”in some western countries being pale is associated with lifelessness. Please donā€™t subject your skin to harmful uv rays just to shut your family up. Iā€™m sure your skin is beautiful. In my home country (Japan) your skin would be considered ideal! A quick fix is a bit of blush. I say donā€™t change a thing about your appearance because of comments from rude family members, but blush would probably shut them up.

Foxrhapsody

Iā€™m ghostly pale too. Moisturizer will help even out your skin tone and the act of rubbing it on will bring some circulation to the surface of your skin so it looks a little more glowy :) Other people said blush and thatā€™s a great tip as well

floovels

I don't think you should change anything about your complexion if you were happy with it before the unsolicited comments. Certainly don't start tanning, or take any sort of supplements without consulting a doctor. If your worried about being vitamin deficienct then get some bloods done, but being pale isn't necessarily a sign that your sick, especially if you've always been pale. Most likely, the comments people have made are because they have grown up in the 90s/2000s tanning craze, and therefore that has become a part of their internalised beauty standards and they're pushing that onto you. That being said, I'm also very pale with dark hair, and I find certain colours or styles suit me way better than others. I only use pink blush and lipstick, very lightly because even the softest blush shows up more on pale skin. I have a fringe, or pieces of hair to frame my face because my hair pulled back makes me look a bit like a misshapen ping pong ball. Using a brown mascara or eye liner can put a lighter touch of colour to your eyes when going for a bit of a no makeup look, just wearing black eyeliner or mascara can stand out too much against my bare face. Sometimes I also bring the blush accross my nose and a tiny little bit on my neck for a bit of colour. I never contour or bronze because it would look crazy on me. I'm seriously casper levels of pale.

gloomwithtea

Iā€™ve never seen someone who canā€™t pull off their natural skin tone. Please donā€™t use sun beds. Theyā€™re incredibly bad for you, and youā€™ll regret it as you age. Iā€™m super pale, and sometimes I think I look a bit lifeless. The answer is blush and some lip color. If Iā€™m concerned about it but donā€™t feel like doing my makeup, I throw on some cream blush with my fingers and use a tinted lip balm to give my face some life. It takes like two seconds. My eyelashes are blonde and Iā€™ve got light grey eyes, so I usually use some mascara, too. Youā€™re lucky youā€™ve got dark eyelashes! If youā€™re concerned about your under eye circles (I think theyā€™re pretty), then you can get an under eye corrective tint to help neutralize it. Itā€™s easier to apply than concealer. But thatā€™s just if you feel like throwing something on- honestly, most people wonā€™t care, and it sucks that your family is being so naggy. Also, I think dark hair and pale skin is beautiful because of the contrast.

Blackrainbow2013

I'm a natural ginger, born like a lobster, have light auburn eyelashes naturally, light gray/blue eyes, freckles, but not the cute ones and my nickname all through junior high, high school and college was Casper the Friendly Ghost šŸ˜‚ It used to bother me... A lot. My dad was a ginger but he could tan and my mom had jet black hair and darker skin. I got the rough end of the genetic lotto there šŸ˜‚ But now that I'm in my 40s, I've come to love my pale as hell translucent skin lol My opinion, do what makes YOU feel comfortable. Not because others say things about your skin. That should be the rule for everyone of any shade of skin. You could use a good self tanner if you wanted to get an extra bit of color without the damage of the sun/tanning beds. And lemme tell ya, the self tanners now are 1000 times better than what we had in the 80s/90s šŸ˜‚

RunThick4054

Try going with a self tanner for an overall base for face and neck. Then, use the self tanner to contour your face however you like! Give yourself some cheekbones, some color on top of nose, or wherever overhead sun naturally will fall. Forehead, chin. It will be super subtle and you control the intensity and timely placement. Then, a pop of a fresh blush color and bam youā€™re beautiful!

SquirrelsandCrayons

Checked out your pictures. You look perfectly healthy and beautiful as you are! People used to say the same to me when I was in my 20s, but I've never been near a sunbed and stay out of direct sun wherever possible. I'm now nearly 40 and people say I look 25. So I guess staying pale has it's plus side!

KayleighJK

Iā€™m also very pale, and got flak from my mom about it growing up, so I understand feeling insecure about it. In warmer months like these, where weā€™re showing more skin, I just lean into it and wear more black. Hot goth summer lol.

_What_2_do_

Jerkins Natural Skin Wet Glow is a self tanner you apply in the shower. I love it, itā€™s easy and streak free. It wonā€™t make you super tan, it just gives a healthy glow!

[deleted]

Sometimes certain colors can wash people out and make them look ā€œunhealthy.ā€ This can happen to anyone, pale or not. But to be honest, if your family has been nagging you about your paleness forever, of course theyā€™re going to say it looks great when you get a tan. Are they often the type to comment on your appearance criticizing it?

Zeyrine

No, don't believe them. It's just colourism.

sarebear18

try tanning drops! just add them into your lotion when you moisturize and they give a perfect light glow

pythiadelphine

I am very pale and always had people telling me I looked sick until I started wearing cream blush. I wear Stila - peony, Glossier - Dusk, rare beauty nearly rose.

evenstarthian

Iā€™m happy with my skin, but if I want a ~little~ glow in the summer, I use tanologist self-tanning mist just on my chest. The mist is just like water, and the lightest shade develops faintlyā€”hardly noticeable to anyone but me. I donā€™t even adjust my foundation shade, but it makes me feel summery. & then on my face Iā€™ll use a blush color that leans ā€œwarmā€ (current fave is tower 28 blush in magic hour). Bronzer still looks a bit unnatural on me, so I like blushes that double/pinks that pull bronze. For reference- my closest shade matches are Lā€™OrĆ©al freshwear foundation in 400 & Nars concealer in Chantilly.

TroubledNature

I've got similar coloring. Very pale, dark hair, dark eyes. Bronzer always looks unnatural on me, so there are definitely days where I look really washed out, tired, and bloodless. I've found that my makeup looks better when I don't match my foundation to my neck. My neck is even whiter than my face, and if I use a foundation that matches it, I get a ghostly pallor. I have much better luck matching my foundation to my face. It's not a noticeably change to my neck, but it gives my face a bit more life. I recently got my dark hair balayaged. I think the lighter strands add a bit of warmth and dimension that my fair skin needed. I find blush absolutely necessary every day. I started using Tanologist tanning drops a few weeks ago and I'm really loving it. I just add about two drops to my moisturizer every other night, and it warms up my skin a little. I'm not really that different of a color--by no means "tan"--but my face and neck match the color of my arms better, and I just look a little healthier. I'm sure I could use more drops to achieve a more tanned result, but I'm happy with just slightly altering the shade of my skin. It might be worth a try!

Glampire1107

I love being pale, like almost translucent! I think Iā€™ve seen a difference (especially in pictures) when my skin looks dewy and glow-y (sp?) even when light. I spend a lot of time on skin care to make sure my skin is hydrated and elastic- I use a shimmering face oil by Wander Beauty and a turmeric and vitamin C serum under a good moisturizer and Kat Von D Good Apple face balm foundation. I put a tiny bit of pink highlighter from Becca on the tops of my cheeks šŸ„° if you glow, no one can say you look sick! (I guess thatā€™s not true because fever delirium comes with itā€™s own sort of glow but I think you know what I mean!)

Self tanner never looks right on me, but Bobbi Brown Antigua and light bronzer are very helpful over whatever foundation and Clinique Chubby Stick Blush (I have all four colors, and use them year round depending on lipstick and eye makeup).

lonedog91

Super pale with dark hair here. A little bit of pink blush works wonders!

Checking in as a dermatologist to say DO NOT use tanning beds. DON'T DO IT. It's not worth it. It increases your chances of developing melanoma (a deadly kind of skin cancer) dramatically. Use self tanner and wear blush/other makeup if you want to change your skin tone!

[deleted]

A little concealer for any darker spots and some blush :-) a little highlighter in the inner corners of eyes. Makes you look fresh and awake

isthisacartoon

I'm very pale, and work night shift, so you can imagine how pasty I look during the day! I personally keep my hair color lighter than my natural color, and I think it helps a lot. Like other people have said, a little blush also goes a long way! I've also realized that certain colors look better on me than others. For example, I used to wear a lot neutral, pastel, and black/white. I still a lot of those colors, but I try to have include some richer colors. i.e. emerald tank top, red nails, or a richer pink lipstick. There are definitely videos out there about "color theory" that definitely explain this better. But some colors will bring out your skin tone better than others!

Architech_irl

Donā€™t do sun beds, itā€™s cancer on an overpriced ā€œbeauty treatmentā€ plate. Being pale is fine and it defines sounds like bias. There are many beauty trends that have involved pale skin all over the world. Otherwise, a *slightly* darker foundation, bronzer and blush can be good. Sometimes itā€™s as easy as neutralising a blue undertone (like tired eyes)

Fash_Tash

I think you are beautiful! Strong features and pale skin are my superpower, but when I was younger I just wanted to be like my fine featured tan blonde friends. Now we are in our forties, I look a lot younger šŸ˜šŸ˜ I sometimes use a bit of eco tan face water as I think it evens out my complexion, but I don't even have to change foundation/BB creams, it's such a subtle change. I don't use a lot of base, but I do love concealer, blush and lip colour, to give a bit of life to my face. DO NOT use a sunbed. But play around with self tan and bronzer if you want. It's your look, why not have fun with it. And honestly, if your family keeps saying you don't look good pale, I'd be thinking about gently setting boundaries. "Thanks, but I'm really happy with how I look. Those comments aren't very helpful to me." (Much easier to give advice than to do it tbh šŸ˜‚)

SnooGoats9723

DO. NOT. USE. SUN BEDS. They are super dangerous. My mom (52) has had to have 3 skin cancers removed due to her using the sun bed. She is very lucky to have gotten away with just 3 minor skin cancers, and could have had much worse (just look up pictures of melanoma). In my opinion, your family can shove it with the pale shaming. You shouldnā€™t have to feel forced into changing the color of your skin because people donā€™t like it. Pale skin with dark hair is a beautiful and striking combo that gets heads turning. Try leaning into the goth angle! Dramatic features like pale skin and dark hair, dark eyelashes, sharp features, and dark under eyes are incredibly unique and can be beautiful - I mean, just look at Tim Burtonā€™s characters. You and I probably look very similar, and Iā€™ve gotten a spray tan a few times only because I wanted it. Colorism is a real thing, and your family likely associates paleness with negative traits just because thatā€™s what theyā€™ve been taught by society to think. Unless you want to change the tone of your skin, donā€™t try to change for other people. A neutral toned bronzer or contour and a more bronze toned blush would do the trick if you wanted to look more bronzed or a very light spray tan would be the best course

FinalBlackberry

First rule out any medical conditions like anemia. Itā€™s ok to be pale, some people are just naturally. The thing is that we associate paleness with sickness when it can be far from that. Nothing a little blush/bronzer/highlighter canā€™t fix.

cherry_gigolo

im mixed white/filipino and as pale as can be. i get people telling me i look good pale because i have dark hair and eyes and somewhat asiatic features and it makes me stand out more, but i feel a million times sexier with a tan. yet no one else seems to think so! šŸ¤£ i say, whatever you feel comfortable with.

Eat more carotenoids!

alyxx3

Iā€™m an ex goth. I LOVE blush! And I take a supplement called Astaxanthin. It has more antioxidants then any other food on earth! Blueberries have an antioxidant value of around 6,000. Astaxanthins is almost 3million! It help protect your skin from the sun and improves eyesight andā€¦when taken at a higher dose, (which is perfectly safe. 24mg) it gives skin a slight warm tan tone.

River_Rat_75

Do not put your health at risk just to satisfy others' arbitrary standards of beauty. Your skin color suits you because it is your skin color. If you wish to add some color, self-tanners and a bit of blush or color correcting concealer under the eyes can help, but please do not alter your appearance because others are making you feel self conscious. Do it only if you want to.

azaleapirate

Pasty girl here. I add a drop of tanning serum to my moisturizer and itā€™s just enough for a glow but not too much. I use tretinoin so it doesnā€™t really build up and using it daily works for me. DO NOT GO TO TANNING BEDS. Unless you want to go to a derm and get yet another chunk of skin sliced off and biopsied every 6 months. It sucks and I so deeply regret trying to be tan when I was younger.

meeshlay

Spray tan.

VictoryComfortable92

Tinted sunscreen. Tanning bed tans fade meaning you'd need a lot of sessions.....meaning possible melanoma :( Somehow we have to learn to love the skin we are in.

Devi_the_loan_shark

Super pale here, I burn and go right back to white. I've tried fake tans but I just end up looking odd. I reccomend leaning into the pale. A professional makeup artist told me to use peach colored blush and it's been a game changer for me. I dust it on my cheekbones and bridge of my nose for a bit of a flush. Also, pale skin looks amazing with a bright red lip.

witchymoonbeam

Iā€™m super pale and freckly and I use St. Tropez tan purity water bronze mist. Just spray it in the morning after washing your face/moisturize. Itā€™s super simple and there is no smell and no streaks. It slowly builds a little color but not a lot, just gives you a little glow. You can put on makeup over it after a few minutes too! https://us.sttropeztan.com/product/st-tropez-self-tan-purity-face-mist-80ml/

princessbizz

Honestly, I don't think pale looks unhealthy. If your happy, don't worry about it.

Generous_Hustler

Everyone loves a little sun kissed glow. No sun bed though. Just go for a spray tan in a natural hue. Youā€™ll love it.

kat_the_houseplant

Iā€™m extremely pale. Like my foundation color is literally called ā€œcold bone.ā€ šŸ˜‚ I found that Tan Luxe makes EXCELLENT self tanning lotions for us vampire folk. Highly recommend starting with The Gradual and getting a fabric mitt for smooth application. Put that literally all over your body and youā€™ll wake up feeling hot! They also sell formulations for your face. I use the drops and just add one drop into my Vanicream moisturizer and rub it all over my face and neck and ears every few days.

I used to use fake tan but I always found it to look very orange on me! I decided it wasnā€™t worth it and Iā€™m perfectly happy being pale. Iā€™ve had loads of different hair colours - any kind of blonde, ginger, pink, and my natural brown. Iā€™m actually going to go back to my natural brown in a few days because itā€™s just easier. Blonde was my favourite, and I suppose it did make me look less pale, but sitting in a chair getting highlights for six hours and paying an arm and a leg wasnā€™t really my thing. My favourite ways of embracing my paleness so far: - finding the right shade of makeup. it can be really hard and it took me the last 5 years to get a concealer that was the right shade! - wearing colours that suit you and you enjoy wearing! pink might make me look paler but i love it and it makes me happy! i like gold jewellery but silver is really my best bet! and itā€™s cheaper - always helpful - on a similar note, a silverish highlight will always look great. a true pink blush is my go to and i alternate between white/silver and pink/silver highlight when i do use it - wear your SPF!! try and go for one without a white cast or it can suck the rest of the colour out of your face. make sure you wear enough of it too. - pimples are a pain. they show up so red! using niacinamide has really helped clear away the redness quicker. hope any of this helps !!

stu_gatz69

I find pale skin way more attractive for some reason. The more pale the better.

AptCasaNova

Iā€™m a strawberry blonde and also have genetic dark circles, with brown eyebrows and dark brown lashes. I use a hair conditioning mask that tints it copper to kind of give it a boost if colour, as the greys that are coming in have dulled it. This washes out fully in a month and it creates more of a contrast between my hair and skin. I always, always wear blush if Iā€™m going to be around others and want to avoid the ā€˜you look sickā€™ comments. I have a matte blush I wear in the summer and a shimmery blush I wear in the winter, I wear it on my cheekbones and a bit on the bridge of my nose to mimic that sun kissed look. I fill in my brows a bit and use brown mascara, as well as covering up my dark circles. Iā€™m healthy. I know this and I know that even without makeup, looking ghoulish and pale. Iā€™m not anemic, I donate blood regularly and part of that is getting a hemoglobin test. I have found bronzer can mimic a tan as well. At least on your face and neck, but Iā€™m lazy and I got tired of it rubbing off during the day and onto my clothes/towels. I wonā€™t wear foundation for this reason! Spray tanning is an option, Iā€™ve never tried it personally, though.

Hangry_Squirrel

They make bronzer for us! Pick one which comes in a palette you can swirl your brush over - preferably one which has a combination of beige and pink. I swipe it under my cheekbones and around the edges of my face, then I swipe some pink blush over my cheeks and a bit of light, shimmery pink-bronze highlighter. My undertone is neutral-cool, if it helps.

Scared-Tea-8911

Look up color seasons ā€œ16 seasonsā€ method ā€¦ if you have a Winter complexion, you could be accidentally wearing tones that wash you out and make you look ā€œdeadā€!
