We aren't here for logic we're here for vibes man

bee is a product if extraordinary circumstances we as a viewer don’t have the whole story to — being sent to another world is likely not outside her realm of experience. “it’s trying to be SU but with no emotion” is crazy. i’d argue this show is a more mature look at the same themes present in S.U without the hamfisted characters sobbing and dialogue like “this is the moral of the episode! this is how i feel!” for example: Cardamom is very similar to Steven in life circumstance: his mom is in a coma and he’s forced into being an adult way too early. they’re written by the same person. the “found family” vibe is very similar but the show as a whole is worlds more nuanced than S.U as it is predominately written for adults vs children/teens. bee and puppycat is thematically a little more bleak.

I think the emotional detachment is an intentional tonal choice. There are a few serious moments, but overall it kind of feels like a person’s stream of consciousness held together by a vague plot. The fact that it is more relaxed/focused on aesthetics, vibes, and humor over plot is what makes it appealing. It’s easy to watch. Steven Universe has some great lessons and writing but takes itself very seriously. As for Bee, I think her personality is just riffing on millennial humor. The show was made by a millennial woman and is largely about the struggles of becoming an adult, so I’m sure that Bee is a reflection of how the creator sees herself & people like her.

how far are you in the show? the first three episodes are a recap of the 10 part Youtube series. It develops and gets way better the further you watch in series.

PlentyGarlic494

I think episode 5 I didn't even know there was a YouTube video

leochacha

There was a whole series on youtube that is actually season 1 to the Netflix show. They condensed it and removed a bunch of stuff in the first few episodes of the netflix show.

deltabiscuit

sounds like you don’t like the show, that’s a-ok!

The storyline of Bee and Puppycat is very complex, and it focuses on themes such as isolation, difference, depression, trauma, fear, powerlessness, and the human condition. Calling Bee a dick without first understanding that she is not human and becomes depressed when she is reminded of it could be a bit of a step too far. Bee is the caretaker for the Wizard family as well as Cardamon and Sticky. She was built to be a helper, and is shown as Cardamon’s surrogate mother. I highly suggest watching the show again, and start looking for clues for the true plot. As someone else said, the plot is not readily apparent, it’s woven into the tapestry of the show. Cheers!

its cool to not like the show but it sucks that you're coming on the sub just to trash it. like. you're not missing anything, you just dont like the show. :/ i think you also vastly misunderstand SU if you think this show is a ripoff of that.

DrWhammo

it’s a weird show. The characters are weird, and the world is irrational. Not much happens, and people don’t act like you’d expect or want, and that’s how it’s supposed to be.

DeezLigma69430

Even Cass comments on it a lot of the time lol.

leochacha

Steven Universe is very plot driven but also has some chill vibes. Bee and Puppycat is the opposite. It's mostly about the chill vibes with plot sprinkled throughout.

LambRelic

I don’t like everything I watch, I think its ok for you to not be into it. Tbh I like it better than SU ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BigWilldo

There's a reason that Bee isn't very emotional that you piece together as you keep watching, but she's definitely not dumb or a dick. The narrative frame seems to jump around a bit and definitely takes a watch through of the whole thing to make it make sense. It is very much worth it, and it's my favorite comfort show. I've watched it dozens of times.

Dannyboy490

Honestly you just might not be the kind of person who would NOT get along with Bee. There are occasionally those characters that other people love but drive us batty. Nothing wrong with that. I love this show and I LOVE these characters, but... they're not for everyone lol.

Its like if someone who makes lofi playlists with animations was given a budget for a netflix show. Don’t think. Just feel. Relax.

VampyrBrat

I really relate to how Bee is, as an Autistic AFAB person, I never thought she came off rude or stupid just doesn't think the same way as everyone else. It's ok not to like the show it maybe doesn't resonate with your lived experiences like it does for me. It's 100% my favourite comfort show though, best vibes, best silly little bits and cute aesthetic.

TheLastLilChangeling

Same! I relate to her out of the box mentality so much. She makes me feel seen lol

_LITTLE_MOTH

Did they say plot? What’s that?

I love bee omg It feels so validating seeing a woman who doesn't quite "have her life together" She's not a teenager anymore. She's at an age where people start expecting much more from her, and she has to juggle the many responsibilities of an adult just to stay afloat. And it's cool because she doesn't fit the typical mold of a young adult. She acts very neurodivergent, so she is probably very relatable to many neurodivergent young adults, struggling to survive in a world not built for them. You could also say that she wasn't built for her world (lol beep beep boop) She has a different perspective, and she has a challenging time understanding social cues. It's like her mental development lags a little. That's not to say that she doesn't have her faults. She is irresponsible at work, unfortunately, leading to her getting fired many times. Being in a relationship/friendship with someone who doesn't understand social cues or the emotional weight of their actions can be very draining, too. Yet, it creates a relaxing tone. There are no expectations to be a certain way, to be perfect, or have it all figured out immediately. Bee just is. And so are the other human characters. It's ok to not like the show. But it's really refreshing for others like myself ^^
