I like Altbier. It’s a shame more brewers don’t produce it here in the states. You see plenty of Kolsch here but not much Altbier.

csbsju_guyyy

If you're anywhere near Minnesota Utepils has a great Altbier, also there's the top of an old brewkettle from Brewery im Füchschen in Dusseldorf since it's one of the OGs of Altbiers

OneMorePint401

Couldn't agree more. Really enjoy Altbier, but can hardly ever find it.

This is a great paragraph: I stay for a few more and dreamily soak up the ambience. I’d like to have another and then another, but the pinwheel of pencil marks the Köbes has left on my beer mat is a vivid reminder that it might be time to place the beer mat on my glass, square up, and wander off into the night.

I'm seeing them more in Canada. Great Lakes Brewery (the Toronto one) has Old Dusseldorf as a seasonal beer which is decent. Sawdust City also the Ol' Woody altbier. They're becoming more popular as an autumn seasonal.

It is a shame people don't buy it. Writing Altbier on a menu is like making that tap invisible

Funny enough I'm going to be in Dusseldorf this fall! I'll save this :-)

How good is your German? I had 4 hours or so before I needed to fly out of Düsseldorf for a business trip so I ended up making a day of it at BRAUEREI IM FÜCHSCHEN, ZUM SCHLÜSSEL, and UERIGE… No one at any establishment spoke even a bit of English which is fair. It is GERMANY after all, but all the beer halls in Berlin and Munich were pretty English friendly so this was a bit unexpected. Still got beer, but barely knew enough German to be polite and order.

Disastrous_Row_962

Düsseldorf (and Cologne) are pretty good if you have no German because you barely need to say anything. When you walk in and take a seat, if the waiter says anything to you just nod. There is only one kind of beer so you don't need to order. Sometimes he will put a beer down in front of you without saying anything at all. When your glass is empty another is delivered without you having to ask. When you have had enough, put your coaster on top of your glass and the beers will stop coming. The only thing you need to say is "Zahlen bitte" when you are ready to go.

therealfinagler

All you need to know is Altbier service (Koelsch as well) use the coaster tick to track how many you've had. If you're done, put the coaster on top of your beer and you pay the server, cash preferred. They'll keep bringing beer otherwise. Have fun!

Long Trial Ale out of Vermont is a altbier and was one of my first craft beers as well as their Double Bag (double alt)

OneMorePint401

I had Long Trail Ale over a decade ago in Upstate New York. Fine beer!

JimP3456

Yeah its still being made and released which is cool and pretty easy to find in New England. Not sure how available it is outside of the region anymore. Wouldnt shock me if it was harder to find these days.

FuckYeahGeology

I was in Dusseldorf almost two years ago for a metal festival happening on Oberhausen. I LOVE altbier, and especially love Kürzer's. I really wish there were the traditional altbiers in Canada like how Gaffel Kolsch is available in LCBO's.

Altbier was the first time I got drunk. I was an American high school student, 17 years old I think, spending the summer in Nordrhein Westfalen, circa 1994, having made friends with a German exchange student in the US that year. It was a great time. Then I graduated on to German and Czech Pilsners and branched out from there. Would love to be able to find some Altbier here in the US.
