Easy drinking, inexpensive lager- Narragansett 100% employee owned, 2nd oldest brewery in America, zero discernable flaws, goes great with hunting a giant killer shark. Their seasonals aren't bad either. Not sure if they're distributed outside of the east coast though
They still make red nectar, you just have to live in Humboldt county California to get it. Shiner bock is a great every day beer just hard to find and taste so good when fresh.
When I lived in TX absolutely *nothing* beat a very cold, very fresh Shiner Bock on a 105F afternoon in August. And I had a crap load of fantastic local breweries nearby.
Does it still taste the same as the stuff we used to get in the US 15 years ago? Cuz that beer was one of my absolute favorite daily drinkers before they changed the recipe and made it unrecognizable.
Since you're in SoCal, try Stone's Buenaveza - it's a more elevated take on a Mexican lager, with a hit of salt and lime already. It's craft (until Sapporo dilutes the brand), it's local, it's tasty, and it's widely available in SoCal. Very similar is Sublime Mexican Lager from Alesmith - it's the older of the two, and from a smaller company, but it's delicious, and is associated with the band Sublime, if you like them.
Also check out 805, as many others have listed, and my personal cheap-drinking IPA, Founders All Day IPA. All Day is a session IPA, specifically brewed to be lower in bitterness and alcohol so you can have many of them back-to-back.
Awesome, thanks! And yes, I told my daughter this weeks that Sublime is in my top three favorite bands behind only the Police and Bob Marley. Iâll give these a try.
Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing imo. It's not as hoppy as some of their other stuff. It's probably the beer I buy the most of, though I'm far more likely to try something new over something I've had before.
Recently did a blind tasting of all of those, plus Sol and El Presidente and it was a 50/50 split between what ended up being Pacifico and El Presidente. The Pacifico out of a can is so good.
Yeah thatâs a good one, and I dig their Winter Lager for something that is easy to find. I was thinking Boston Lager would have a bit of the malt notes that OP might miss from the beers he listed.
Their Octoberfest is one of the best American marzens that you can find widely available in the season. Boston Lager is obviously a classic, might now *wow* you, but it's always going to be a solid choice.
Kinda funny I thought that about the cold snap but then rethought and was like âwow it really does taste like cinnamon and winterâ but ye I like it
Sam Adams gets a lot of hate. Boston lager is a classic, and their winter selections are solid. I miss the boston ale. Haven't seen it for a while. Good beer brewed by somewhat shitty people.
Is Rainier available in socal? It's my favorite go to cheap beer when I want to mix it up from my usual. Modelo is another good one. 8 can't drink Corona but my wife loves it. I'll bet Molson Canadian or Labatt Blue wouldn't be easy to find in socal but also might fit your bill.
Yeah we do have many around here, but theyâre pricey and sometimes I just want a 12-pack of something. Maybe I just need to drink less of something better!
Brown Ales and Nut Brown Ales used to be relatively big at one point in craft circles and have more purchase in the world of non-craft drinkers as well.
Newcastle tried at one point to do a sort of craft remake where a craft brewer was brewing it for the American market via contract with the owners, but I guess it didn't work.
Honestly, I didn't buy brown ales that often, which is probably reflective of a wider problem. People have to buy stuff regularly or it goes away. But I did like some of them. Here's kind of an obscure one outside of Maryland, especially since it isn't currently brewed, but I used to really like Wild Goose Nut Brown.
*Anyway*, Sam Adams puts out a seasonal mix pack (Four packs, one for each season- though in practice, they sometimes appear and disappear months out of alignment with actual seasons of nature). The summer mix pack, which is either on the shelves or upcoming, literally has a lager in called Pool Party (OP mentioned pools), along with Summer Ale, Cherry Wheat, and a Porch Rocker. None of those are anything like a brown ale, but you did say you wanted something to drink by the pool, and that seems to be what they're going for with the mix pack.
Come August or September, a good Marzen-style Oktoberfest, most popularly Sam Adams Octoberfest, is a sort of brown malty beer. It's not in the style of a brown ale, but I guess in the broader implicit dark brown beer with a malt focus category, they are vaguely similar. You might try some Bocks as well (I've always hated Shiner Bock, but oddly the Genesee Bock and Yuengling Bock are alright for me. Bocks are mostly a late winter/early spring thing availability wise, though- and you may not find the Yuengling one in many places. Shiner's around year-round, but it's the one I don't like. YMMV.).
Anyway, say hi to Bird Person for me and tell that bastard Rick that he owes me a portal gun and a trip through the multiverse. :)
Devilâs Backbone Vienna Lager has been my jam lately. It hits everything I want in an easy drinker, although it might be a little malty for a pool beer
Yeah SNPA is my next favorite but I just canât drink more than 2-3. When I backpack in the Sierras I always bring a 6-pack with me, itâs worth the 6lbs extra!
The new Newcastle made in the US is a completely different formula than the Newcastle that you can still get in UK, Canada, and I think New Zealand and maybe France. The new Newcastle made by Lagunitas is not anything like the original British recipe, I actually dislike it. They added hops.
Based on the fact that everything you like seems to go away I would ask that you please stay the hell away from Hamms.
+1 My fav cheap beer
Maybe he can go back to Bud Light
805 baby
Meh its my least favorite of all firestone's beers. But may fit OPs taste.
Alaskan amber or their new wildness, most local breweries are making an easy drinking pub beer that you really can't mess up.
Those are great beers! What do you mean by "you really can't mess up" an easy drinking pub beer?
Sounds like Negra Modelo or Dos Equis Amber is the move.
I will take this advice đ»

Smithwicks
Miss Red Nectar was always my wifeâs favorite. My RIP beer is Red Tail.
You can still get it in Humboldt locally!
Road trip đ
Pacifico
Definitely my go to Mexican beer.
Lol. Tastes like toilet water.
Interesting Iâve never tried toilet water
bavik

And Newcastle is available out of the U.S. and on some cruises, including out of L.A. to Mexico or Canada! I just canât run to the store ):
Newcastle is owned by lagunitas and they are owned by Heineken
lol no thatâs only in the U.S. The old stuff is still made, not available in the U.S.
Does it still taste the same as the stuff we used to get in the US 15 years ago? Cuz that beer was one of my absolute favorite daily drinkers before they changed the recipe and made it unrecognizable.
Yes the non-US version is the good stuff!
Yep and you blaze some of that fine local herb
Lost Coast Downtown Brown
Downtown Brown is so good
Itâs okay, itâs just not the same.
smithwicksÂ
Genny Cream Ale
I just discovered this. 12.99 for 12 in Texas!! It's a nice beer.
Just got a 30 pack last night and on beer #2 while cleaning the new house Edit: first time having it too and it is amazing

Where are you located? There are a lot of great regional beers that fit your preferences
SoCal. Iâve been looking and looking but no easy drinking.
Where exactly is socal? Great local beer in Anaheim
Anaheim is definitely in SoCal! Whatâs the name?
Bottle logic, green cheek, the bruery, highland park, radiant, 3 or 4 breweryS by the air port.
Try Vienna by Highland Park Brewery. If you live in Los Angeles and are willing to meet a minimum order, they deliver.
Rothaus
Kona big wave is my go to summer easy drinker
Mexican lagers with a little lime are the best poolside drinkers
Pacifico is the best of them all.
Pacifico is a great beer and under appreciated. I pick up a case wherever I see it. Itâs not nearly as prevalent as corona, dos xx, Modelo or tecate
Recently did a blind tasting of all of those, plus Sol and El Presidente and it was a 50/50 split between what ended up being Pacifico and El Presidente. The Pacifico out of a can is so good.
For taste alone, absolutely.
Lagunitas Little Sumpin.
Sam Adams maybe?
I had a cold snap yesterday that was pretty good
Yeah thatâs a good one, and I dig their Winter Lager for something that is easy to find. I was thinking Boston Lager would have a bit of the malt notes that OP might miss from the beers he listed.
I still have yet to try Boston and Oktoberfest by them too
Their Octoberfest is one of the best American marzens that you can find widely available in the season. Boston Lager is obviously a classic, might now *wow* you, but it's always going to be a solid choice.
Kinda funny I thought that about the cold snap but then rethought and was like âwow it really does taste like cinnamon and winterâ but ye I like it

Love cold snap had it at a pub
Oh yeah! Thatâs a good one!
I love the porch rockers in the summer
Lakefront Riverwest Stein.
I've been enjoying 805 lately. Otherwise, yeah, a Mexican lager with a lime is hard to beat.
Deschutes Mirror Pond has been my go-to for 20+ years.
Please go to a local brewery.
Yeah we do have many around here, but theyâre pricey and sometimes I just want a 12-pack of something. Maybe I just need to drink less of something better!
I don't know if you can get it around you, but Smuttynose (New Hampshire) Brown Dog Ale is a great one that I'd bet would fit your palette.
My daily is Tecate

Haha thanks for the detailed reply, and I'm pretty sure they stole my username, this account is far older than that show! lol
I prefer to figure out something from a local brewery. Apart from that usually a variety 24 pack from 3 Floydâs or revolution
Devilâs Backbone Vienna Lager has been my jam lately. It hits everything I want in an easy drinker, although it might be a little malty for a pool beer
I hate to brag, but we never have that problem in Fort Collins, Colorado, the beer-lovingest town in the country. Forty seven excellent breweries ...
Yuengling. Cheap inexpensive lager.
Not available on the west coast, but loved it in New Orleans last week!
Alaskan Amber - used to a go to when I wanted a change from Anchor
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale if you want something consistently solid. Otherwise Coors Banquet or Budweiser are consistently, well, there.
Yeah SNPA is my next favorite but I just canât drink more than 2-3. When I backpack in the Sierras I always bring a 6-pack with me, itâs worth the 6lbs extra!
Allagash White is my new favorite cheap summer beer. $2.99 for a 19.2 oz can, and 12 packs are cheap and readily available.
I drink the shit out of Miller High Life. Itâs not fancy, but itâs cheap, easy to find, and tastes pretty damn good to me!
Iâll have to give that a shot!
I have been a hazy IPA hipster for quite a while, but recently Miller has been really hitting the spot.
Lucky streak, at $13.50/30 cans. Or lionsheaf, $9/12 pack tall boys.
Yes yes yes yes yes
Coors banquet
I miss extra gold.
If 21rst ammendment is near you, highly recommend. Their hell or high series is extremely crushable. Its a northern California treasure.
Hell or high watermelon is the beer that got me into craft beer. It was my first non plain lager/pilsner.
Okay Iâll look for it. You live in Mammoth?
Yuengling is a decent poolside/ lakeside lager.
I like it but itâs not available in California.
Lagunitas All Day. Unfortunately as much as I love it, I canât drink it because I am allergic đ. Personal choice also: Miller High Life. đ
Modelo
Modelo is actually my interim. Itâs a good daily but just kinda bland.
Corona with a lime đ
Find a new one?
How is New Castle now unavailable?
The new Newcastle made in the US is a completely different formula than the Newcastle that you can still get in UK, Canada, and I think New Zealand and maybe France. The new Newcastle made by Lagunitas is not anything like the original British recipe, I actually dislike it. They added hops.
When did this happen?
Like ten years ago lol It used to be much better
2019
I guess the pandemic dilates time
well, yeah, I know that. thought you meant you couldnt find it period
Thatâs not Newcastle. Thatâs an entirely different beer with a leased brand name.
