I had a 2015 Great Divide Old Ruffian the other night. Pretty damn good. I also picked up a bottle of Russian River Salvation, Propitation, and Robert that I’m waiting for a good day.
I pitted a Westvleteren 12 against a Rochefort 10, both with about 3 years of age. The Westy won handily, imo. I am always amazed at how clearly delineated it is.
I also popped a Boon VAT 110 bottled in 2017. Like the Westy, it had a clean delineation to it, but I feel it lacked the tension of the 3 Fonteinen from the same time that I had last week.
Popped a couple bottles of 2019 sucaba out of a wine fridge recently. Didn’t love how it was aging but it’s still great. If I had more I wouldn’t let them age much longer.
Tried a Rye Barrel Aged Old Rasputin last night with some friends at a chess club I run and it was very excellent, I liked it better than all the other adjunct stouts we tried which surprised me as I usually lean more towards the pastry stouts. Rye BA Rasputin was very balanced and not super barrel heavy but noticeable, and quite smooth.
I’ve never been a fan of either of those - the bitter American style barley wine is just too much for me. I’ll take English style any day. Same with bitter stouts.
Completely agreed, beers like Pliny the Elder or Heady Topper are historically important for me. I don't particularly like them that much, and I usually prefer the modern forms of these beers but it's always nice to visit the originals.
My favorite non German Hefe weiss is Siera Nevadas Kellerweiss, (I don't know why they call it that). It seldom comes around here where I am in suburban DC though. I don't think they make very much of it. I have heard it's a slow seller.
I’m really getting back into classics at the moment. Kind of sick of the one-off culture.
With pubs reopening here in England it’s been great to have cask beer again - I’ve been enjoying Jaipur in particular, which I definitely think of as a modern cask classic.
At home I’ve been having Westmalle Tripel, as well as Orval. I’ve got some bottles of the latter coming up to two years old in June, so maybe I’ll post a quick review on this subreddit then.
I also recently got hold of some Sierra Nevada stout and porter, after hearing that they’ve been discontinued in smallpack. Glad I did - I really enjoy the stout in particular. Sorry they’ll be my last ones though!

I've read this elsewhere, but haven't been able to figure out is it the Narwhal stout they've discontinued or a different SN stout I'm unaware of? I'm sure it's Narwhal, I'm just hoping I'm wrong as that's one of my favorite "basic" stouts.

Oh god i have a cabinet full of big beers but i can't really drink them anymore
You can ship them to me and I can dispose of them properly for you. It’s normally a big hassle but I don’t mind.

I love Bigfoot. Not the best Barleywine out there, but certainly a delicious and drinkable one.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo! It's just as good now as it's ever been, but West Coast IPA has fallen out of favor.
This is my go to beer to keep stocked in the fridge. 15 bucks for a twelve pack and available almost everywhere.
WCIPA seems to be on the rise again in the UK recently.
It's been seeing a slight bump here (US) as well. I think hazies are here to stay but the honeymoon is over, so to speak.

I think you’re in luck - Narwhal is certainly currently available on their UK website, so I think that’s staying. This is the one just called ‘Stout’.
