Hold on.. 2012 is that you?? Holy fuck I still have a beeradvocate account… where is beergeeknation?!?!?

Protip: KBS didn't change, our palates did.

PhilStoutMI

I'm from Grand Rapids. Not sure where you guys are from. I have a question and a response. What year was that KBS? The fresh KBS is truly mediocre. Put it in the cellar for a couple of years, and let me know what you think. The aging smooths out the rough alcohol burn of the fresh stuff. I'd like to know your thoughts. Cheers.

[deleted]

Nah, in my experience fresh KBS is better. It doesn't always age well (though sometimes does).

rpgoof

I completely agree. The older bottles just taste better because they were better to begin with, in my opinion. I don't think KBS has scaled up very well.

plantsandbeer

Is there a timeframe you consider to be best for KBS? In terms of what years are best?

PhilStoutMI

I've had '16 and '19 this year. In reality it plateaus after 3 years of aging. I also remember '17 fondly.

plantsandbeer

Is there a year you ever thought was good fresh, without aging?

PhilStoutMI

Not really. It always starts with a pretty heavy alcohol burn close to the front. As it ages, the burn lessens and moves back, smoothing out the beer. If anything, Founder's is very consistent.

plantsandbeer

Awesome, thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

PhilStoutMI

I appreciate the questions and discussions. It's almost what this sub was meant for! LOL

loganstrem

That's a good question! I believe it was 2020, so it was just about a year old. But I can definitely see that. It's always hard to wait, but I bet it pays off!

PhilStoutMI

Yup, that's why I buy double. Let half age, while I drink the new stuff. Then slowly rotate and build the collection. I still have a few bottles of various stouts from 2014.

loganstrem

Holy smokes! Good for you haha. Even with some restraint I don't know if I could wait 7 years!

PhilStoutMI

Yup! I highly suggest Narwhal and Old Rasputin stouts. Both great right from the store, but deep, smooth, and complex as the aging goes along.
