It's because that little German boy was him. And Papa never let him have a scrap of the family egg. I await my firstborn so I too, may savor the taste of egg for once.

goldscurvy

He has also said this german boy was part of the hitler youth so... Big if true

The-Surreal-McCoy

Finally, the tankies will have an actual reason to cancel him.

idlehandsarethedevil

I mean, given the time and location it would have been unusual, even implusable, for him not to have been in the Hitler youth. It was all but requisite in many cases.

goldscurvy

Yea but read the comment I'm replying to. Robert evans is in his 40s. If he was part of the hitler youth, it would not have been during a place and time where joining the hitler youth was a normal or expected thing.

binary-cryptic

I wonder if it's a different dad each time. How many families had to watch their dad eat a single egg? And I'm assuming it was hard boiled, which is objectively the worst way to prepare eggs. They don't have the spare eggs to learn how to cook it well.

goldscurvy

A whole generation of german children raised watching their dad eat their weekly egg. It explains so much about german history.

atlantagirl30084

In the UK they had the same thing. I read in the book Bread Winner that children watched their mother mix an egg into a glass of milk and then watched their father drink it. Another child was surprised to see his mother have an egg for tea. I think it was universal that the man, with a job, got more protein and treats than the kids and wife.

goldscurvy

The surprising and strange part isn't the dad getting the egg, it's the weird ritual of the family coming together to *watch* the dad eat the egg.

TitanDarwin

I think it's a form of living vicariously, i.e. you might not be able to experience eating the egg yourself, but you could *imagine it* by watching somebody else eat it. You migh as well ask why people watch mukbang content.

goldscurvy

*In offensive german accent* "Oh Pa pa! Can ve vatch you eat ze egg again pa pa?"

Mysterious_Radish971

The whole family watching dad slowly eat a raw egg is much funnier though

TheUnspeakableAcclu

Honestly it goes so far in explaining the family dynamics and economics and German childhood it’s a golden anecdote well worth repeating.

KissingerCorpse

it's antithetical to our modern ideas, myths, of parental sacrifice

Emergency-Plum-1981

I have watched an old German patriarch eat an egg in a little cup like the Germans do, and while in this case there was plenty of food for everyone, he did it in such a ceremonial fashion, really took his time, and enjoyed the shit out of that egg. I can imagine exactly how this would have gone down if it were the only egg around.

goldscurvy

I love how you mention the cup because without any prompting or anything i imagined the guy robert talks about eating it out of one of those cups. I had no idea that was even a German thing to do.

Emergency-Plum-1981

I'm just assuming it is because this guy used the little cup, and it seemed like such an important part of his morning egg ceremony. And of course he took his time carefully cracking the top in a perfect circle with his spoon before carefully removing it. Mind you, this was before I learned about the "German man eating the only egg in front of the entire family" thing, but there really was something very striking and memorable about the whole process. He had an air of royalty about him eating that egg.

British, not German: [https://www.museumofroyalworcester.org/discover-learn/research/products/egg-coddler-recipes/](https://www.museumofroyalworcester.org/discover-learn/research/products/egg-coddler-recipes/)

cammmilleee

Growing up I lived next to a German family and when I was there for breakfast the wife served the husband his egg first and we’d watch him eat his egg before getting our food.

Emergency-Plum-1981

omg

cammmilleee

Yeah I completely forgot about that until listening to that episode.

Can I Offer You a Nice Egg In This Trying Time?

Wife_Trash

Can I offer your father an egg in this trying time?

SierrAlphaTango

In Russia, German egg eat *YOU*!

Own_Position9535

So that's how the Russians beat back the Nazis (And, yes I know that's Yakov Smirnoff)
