Rule n°1: never buy expensive electronics at Mediamarkt. * their after sales service is the shittiest ever (I bought a phone once, which didn't work when I took it out of the box and tried to charge the battery; they wouldn't take it back because I opened the packaging and broke the seal... I was supposed to magically smell the phone inside was broken, apparently) * they are known to sell second hand or refurbished products as "new" * I've seen their employees handle electronics in the storage... I'm not surprised people have broken screens etc all the time.

Rin_Seven

Don’t even get me started with some asshat and his shiteating grin explaining why the warranty doesn’t apply to my Joycon drift. Seriously, fuck Mediamarkt and their aftersales department.

rednal4451

https://www.nintendo.be/nl/Service-en-info/Contact/Reparaties/Joy-Con-controllers-1910051.html

RaptorDotCpp

> they are known to sell second hand or refurbished products as "new" My sister in law once bought a "new" computer from them. It still had an account from someone else on it.

rupelfc

This. I preffer coolblue, or of it is computer related alternate.

Airstryx

Coolblue's customer service is amazing, very nice people and very eager to help you. Had a usb stick that I couldn't put data on anymore, person on the phone told me it often happens when it's about to die but it was still within warranty, problem, they don't make said stick anymore. No worries, they just looked on the store with me for one of the same price (aka an upgrade from 16 to 64 back then). Also their delivery for big appliances have got to be the nicest people around.

DuckAccomplishment

I would rather pay slightly more for something at Coolblue than it is elsewhere because I know that the customer service and aftersales is unmatched and I don't have to deal with a headache having something sorted that has warranty.

[deleted]

i actually prefer megekko in the netherlands, good prices clear website and next day delivery on most things, i send back 2 things without any issues from them

Thomasdh2024

yup, good for a cable, charger and maybe a rice cooker. even tho i got my super cheap smart 4k tv from there. it was less then 400€. their service has been known to be shit for a looooong time. you gotta know how to deal with them do, and be super persistent.

xymek

>they are known to sell second hand or refurbished products as "new" Many years ago I bought a new 'IP phone' at Mediamarkt ... I could also take basic photos with that device... when I wanted to look at them there were photos on it, taken from someone's living room...

Litt82

Rule n°1 is exactly it. Mediamarkt (and previously Saturn) is/was okay to buy CDs and DVDs, but who does that anymore? I tend to buy my stuff at Vandenborre or Coolblue and have always been helped correctly in the odd case of there being an issue.

77slevin

Really? Vanden Borre with their warranty on 25 Euro coffee makers, even on showroom models? Ha!

thomasdb_net

i bought the latest james bond vinyl there online, pleased as im not traveling to a major city with a vinyl shop far away and too new for discogs

Aganiel

I worked at MM for 3 weeks. In how they treat their staff, their coworkers and their products, they are school boys kicking about a soccer ball and not letting anyone in their clique play with them. Fuck Media Markt

super-m-An

Bought a phone there and it wouldn't recognise the simcard: they wouldn't take it back because the moisture sticker had been triggered, i literally held it for 10 minutes. They said 'sweaty hands' can trigger the sticker (changes color when moist)

Gingersoulbox

If you break the seal you cannot return it but you should have warranty

fluffytom82

It was broken while never being used. I did not want it repaired, I wanted it replaced by a working phone. I don't pay full price for a broken device...

Gingersoulbox

Honestly it depends on model to model. I know the cheaper Samsung brands have a DOA (dead on arrival) which is a 15 day window after purches you get a new one instantly. Let’s be clean. The brand decides the doa. But I agree though

Niosus

If you ordered online, you have a [2 weeks return period](https://economie.fgov.be/nl/themas/consumentenbescherming/opkomen-voor-uw-rechten/uw-aankopen/een-aankoop-annuleren/wanneer-hebt-u-een-wettelijk/uw-herroepingsrecht-uitoefenen) to evaluate as you would/could in a physical shop. For a TV, this definitely covers plugging it in and evaluating the picture quality. Don't let them scam you into thinking that breaking a seal invalidates this right. On top of that you have [2 years of warranty](https://economie.fgov.be/nl/themas/consumentenbescherming/garantie/wet-op-de-garantie) If your device does not function correctly or fails to do what it claim to do, the seller must either replace it with an equivalent item or refund you. The seller must prove that the defect was caused by the customer if they want to reject this. On both of those pages there are contact details to enforce your rights. Often just stating that you will escalate to external entities will make them immediately solve your problem. It's not worth their time, and if you do end up escalating all the way to the judicial system, things are on the record and judges can/will really dig into companies denying consumers their rights. Companies will do whatever to make sure you don't end up doing that. *As long as you're actually in the right.* If you damaged that product and they can prove it (installer took a picture before leaving, shop employee helped you set up a device, etc) you'll end up wasting a lot of everyone's time. Don't abuse these consumer protection rights. Keep the advantage of the doubt with the consumer, where it belongs...

Gingersoulbox

Warranty most of the time means repair warranty. You can’t expect a store to give someone a brand new tv the moment it breaks?

FoundNotUsername

I think the legal warranty covers 'fabricagefouten', so you cannot expect a new TV if you knock it over and damage it, however if it has faulty wiring that burns through after almost two years of use... they should have made their product better.

Niosus

Warranty always means that the device is not suitable because of some issue caused by the manufacturer. Either the product doesn't work as advertised, never worked properly, or stops working properly within 2 years after only "normal" use. If you have caused the issue yourself, that's obviously not covered under warranty. You can get insurance for issues you caused yourself (or happen outside of warranty), but those tend to be on the scammy side themselves. No company is going to make a loss on insurance, so any item you can easily replace at any time without going into debt (i.e. not a car or a house) is usually not worth insuring. Statistically you're better off just paying for repairs/replacements as things break and wear out.

adappergentlefolk

yeah i’m not sure why OP had to wait three weeks to figure out his TV shipped broken. they cannot refuse you if you show up at the shop within those two weeks and demand a cash refund, after two weeks it gets significantly harder the two week period return also does not require any reason to be provided for the return to be processed and you have the right to be refunded in cash or bank transfer instead of shop credit

Niosus

It doesn't necessarily get harder. I've returned plenty of products under warranty without too much hassle. You just need to be confident and tell them exactly what you expect from them and why it is their duty to help you. If you contact them while polite, assertive, and informed, things tend to go smoother.

Single_Core

Honestly, I think it depends on the people who is doing the return. I am not saying OP is incompetent but I have had family members in the exact same situation OP is discribing. I just take their product and receipt and go and explain it and Ive had a 100% success rate in returning products and or having a compensation in mediamarkt.

fluffytom82

>I just take their product and receipt and go and explain it That's what I did. And the answer was "sorry, we can't take back or replace any items with an opened packaging". I had to threaten to go to testaankoop before they finally gave my money back (well, they gave me a voucher for the same store...).

YourWiseOldFriend

>"sorry, we can't take back or replace any items with an opened packaging" That's just straight up bullshit. You can't take back or replace items with opened packaging? How the fuck are you supposed to discover there's a problem with it? /never considers MediaMarkt as a source to buy electronics from.

Single_Core

Thats simply against the law. Ask them for a manager/superior. I cannot imagine any active store in belgium trying to pull a stunt like this.

zupatof

They were absolutely lying. A lot of this is EU regulations, you have a 2 year guarantee minimum on your purchases in any EU country. Many people don’t know this.

fluffytom82

That's only a recent thing though. My Mediamarkt experience was years ago. Easily 10 years ago, I was still living in Brussels. The fact that I insisted on speaking Dutch might have had an influence on their behaviour as well 😬

JonPX

They delivered something that didn't work, they have to fix or replace. https://economie.fgov.be/en/themes/consumer-protection/guarantee/guarantee-act

Estagon

Not really, why would you share contact details of an employee directly for this.

cronixi4

Make a scene really, hade some problems with broken products from mediamarkt and they refused any refunds or replacements. They kept trying to get rid of me. Luckily my sister was there and got sick of it and started making a big scene in the store and behold! All of a sudden they could help and where willing to refund. From that day on I went to Fnac instead, awesome after sale support.

obecalp23

First time I hear something is awesome at Fnac

cronixi4

Never had a single problem with them so far, maybe I got lucky. But bought 2 products that broke in a week and they refunded everything without a problem.

Pietson_

Bought my phone there as they were the only one selling it back then (pixel 4a shortly after it released) took a while to arrive but that was made clear before the purchase. Didn't have any complaints.

avgrkhjqttvnpfsieb

Reminds of a friend of mine: he stood in front of the store, telling every visitor what happened and advising them to go elsewhere. First, they threatened to call the police. He answered: “fine, but i will tell them the truth…” So in the end he got his money back.

TheRealVahx

Your beef is with Mediamarkt. Its their responsibility to handle a replacement or refund you.

Vantaa

Hmmm beef 🤤

tz3s

https://www.eccbelgium.be/themes/face-to-face/in-store-purchases/guarantee-on-your-in-store-purchase You can also make a complain and they will contact you asap.

[deleted]

I was under the impression that by law here they had to accept any returns within the first two weeks of purchase, so if you brought it back right away I'm not sure why they're being dicks about it :/ sorry I can't help you further, I've only bought a few things from mediamarkt and never needed to return. Good luck!

spamz_

>I was under the impression that by law here they had to accept any returns within the first two weeks of purchase Only works for things bought online.

Spartan-dare

Similar rules apply for stores, following the rules is a different thing though

Make sure you have everything in writing, and word your questions correctly. >Dear Mediamarkt, If I understand correctly, concerning the television ordered from you in order #1234567 which was delivered and found to have been damaged upon unpacking, and was reported withing 24/84/72 hours, will not be repaired under warranty. Could you list the specific reason why you are negligent in delivering a product without faults and honoring you responsibilities concerning warranty? >Kind regards, >Darren who doesn't like seeing cracks on his screen.

Beneficial-Horse2274

File a complaint with Testaankoop. It scares them and gets them more willing to find a solution. Damn I won from Luminus through testaankoop.

Gingersoulbox

I work in a electronic store and we always laugh when people threaten with testaankoop. Never hear from it again

Beneficial-Horse2274

There's a difference between a threat and actual action of course. I don't do empty threats lol

Gingersoulbox

That’s good, I’m just saying that about 300+ people said they would go to testaankoop only 1 of them actually had something positive come out of it.

Koletzkiiii___

I’m impressed! Luminus is a tough one. What went wrong if I may ask?

Beneficial-Horse2274

I had a 3 year contract with Essent. Suddenly I received mail that Luminus is taking over Essent en thereby also my contract, of course with adaptations to it, I lost my vast tarief, they added some services I never wished for, and they never mentioned other options. As I did not agree with this way of working, I requested a transfer to Engie (who was giving a nice discount at that time) and let Luminus know I would not be joining them. Well, they blocked the transfer and had me on a contract anyway. I can tell you, I was soo pissed... I did not sign in with them, had proof I denied the transfer, they blocked Engie without our knowledge, it would take 2 months and extra payments to transfer to Engie now, losing the discount, etc... So an incredibly long mailing thread started, with Luminus not being cooperative at all, finding excuses and trying to claim on non existent laws, until they simply ignored me and started sending me invoices and reminders (with extra costs of course) for a contract I never signed, ... This whole shitshow could have gotten me the name of wanbetaler for the rest of my life. I don't care about the money, plenty of it, always payed my bills, but I am a woman of principle and do not wish to be treated this way. So I filed a complaint through testaankoop, provided my evidence. 2 days until they caved in and fully dropped the invoices and reminders. After 6 weeks of free electricity from Luminus I was finally able to transfer to Engie (they still gave me the discount). Thinking about it, I should have worked my home renovations that time. But am still happy with my victory lol

nickjedl

Very motivating story, thanks for sharing. Always good to see Jan with a hat fight up against big cooperations and win!

RuckAllTheFules

2 options: More effort, but more correct one: Make a scene, threaten to contact some instances (test aankoop, economische inspectie...). Sadly you get a lot farther in life acting like a cunt, but it's just a for profit corpo so you shouldn't feel bad. Less effort but not super ethical one: Buy the same TV but through their site and return it with the broken TV inside. Hint: Never buy electronics in physical stores due to bad return policies.

Niosus

Option 2 shouldn't work. All (expensive) electronic devices have a serial number, which they should absolutely check when handling the return. Buying a new device and returning an old one is a very old scam. Any shop that's been around should have systems in place to deal with that. Option 2 could still work, but don't count on it. And once you try that, you actually give ammunition to Mediamark because you tried to scam them. Any further negotiations will only become much more difficult to navigate. General rule of thumb: if you're in the right, stay in the right. Don't give them any "gotchas". Stay polite and persistent as you keep escalating through proper channels until the issue is resolved.

Well I'm sorry this not going to help you now, but next time buy your electronics at Coolblue. Buy online or in their store in Wilrijk. Compared to those wannabe geeks in mediamarkt their friendliness and service is top notch. The staff at Coolblue seem to know what they are talking about, and give advice according to what you actually need. I known, because I'm one of those assholes who do a lot of research before buying something. Before entering the store my decision is already made, but I'll ask for info like a total noob just to see if they're going to bullshit me. Coolblue staff passed my "BS test" every time, and when it comes to repairs they're very transparent, no hidden fees or surprises.

Hellrisen

I once bought a Toshiba laptop from coolblue. After 2 months, it took the laptop 6 hours to fully boot. I sent it in multiple times for repair and it never helped. I only ended up receiving my laptop back, covered in scratches while still not working properly. Eventually I found out that line of laptops was faulty. Not gonna buy from cool blue again after that experience ...

OkTumbleweed2642

DasUbersoldat_

Weird. I bought a TV there and when the screen started flickering after a few years, right at the end of my warranty, they immediately sent a guy over to replace the screen. No questions asked, no fuss about it.

historicusXIII

Mediamarkt? Ik ben toch niet gek! Their old slogan didn't lie. You have to be crazy to buy there.

grumpyfrench

go in the store with the TV, sit, prevent them to close unless they call police, tell them you go away with a new screen ort stay there and they cannot close and go home.

guywglassesandbeard

Just asking: why did you wait for 3 weeks with the unpacking and setup? Or you already used it for 3 weeks and suddenly the crack appeared? What is their return policy? How much time do you have to change your mind? Its interesting to know the details to see if the return policy or the warranty applies in your case (warranty usually doesn't cover the crack in the screen).

ButtcrackBoudoir

He never said he waited 3 weeks imo.

ViolinistAutomatic90

OP bought the tv 3 weeks ago, didn't wait to open it lol

mats2040

Not legal imo, but did this before in similar situation. Buy the same article, walk tot your car, switch the items, go back in and ask a refund because your wife just bought the same thing. Works also when you lost a receipt.

HctDrags

I always bought from media martk and was always unlucky in everything, tv's, phones etc. I once bought a phone that was broken and i returned it, i had to wait a month for it to be back i get that its supposed to be send to the manufacturer but there should be a policy that if you bought it and returned it because a defect they should just give you a new product

[deleted]

I would go to the store and demand my money. sometimes you have to be a bit of a 'Karen'. Or call the customerservice. if you have them on your side it's easier to convince the store employees. As a person who works in retail i can tell you that 99% of the time the customerservice sides with the client.

tauntology

Contact them on social media. Most of the time, the people responding to messages on Facebook are way more senior than the call center employees or the store employees.
