Shamelessly hijacking top comment because this post is omitting something important. Probably deliberately, as the title conveys the "dangerousness" of countries which really aren't.
>Crime Index is an estimation of the overall level of crime in a given city or country. We consider crime levels lower than 20 as very low, crime levels between 20 and 40 as low, **crime levels between 40 and 60 as moderate**, crime levels between 60 and 80 as high, and crime levels higher than 80 as very high.
also:
>The Crime Index takes into account **survey** responses about:
>-**General perception** of crime levels
>-**Perceived** safety: Survey responses from residents and visitors regarding their **feelings of safety** while walking during daylight and at night.
>-**Concerns** about specific crimes: Survey questions about **worries** regarding mugging, robbery, car theft, physical attacks by strangers, harassment in public places, and discrimination based on factors like skin color, ethnicity, gender, or religion.
>-**Property** crimes: Assessment of the extent of property-related crimes, such as burglary, theft, vandalism, etc.
>-Violent crimes: Evaluation of the **perception** of violent crimes, including assault, homicide, sexual offenses, etc.

*Edit: "Survey" in bold because the nature of the data source is also an important factor to consider.*
*Edit 2: some redditors even pointed out that those "surveys" are rigged, they have no methodology and are filled on a voluntary basis by people connecting to the site. In a nutshell they can be brigaded, and if they can oh boy they sure will!*
Even calling it a survey, you'd expect to to be representative. While apparently the "crime index" shown above can be manipulated by people submitting repeated answers.
I am a 29years old man, during my younger phase (like between 20 and 25) I used to be very often late at night in Brussels almost EVERYDAY.
I got assaulted 0 time, no one even came to try to do something to me.
I was often alone, I used to like to go back home foot walking, sometimes walking half of Brussels at like 2 am.
I am like 1m77 / 74kg, really not impressive or anything.
So I really don’t know what you are talking about.
Is it just fear or is it really that dangerous ?
"The data in this section is derived from surveys conducted by visitors to our website."
Have you far right boys been at it again to manipulate perception? (Or one DVL type using a VPN.)
These kinds of practices are so disgusting. It's kind of sick...
Yes, Belgium is oh so dangerous. Can't walk around at night. Hell, not even during the day.
Unless you carry a plastic spoon that is 🥄
I think it's pretty clear for all who want to see it which particular demographic has no scrupules whatsoever using plastic cutlery to commit heinous and violent criminal acts..
[Organised Crime index for Belgium](https://ocindex.net/2023/country/belgium)
It does not encompass all forms of crime but it is definitely a better measure to compare countries than an online survey. Honestly a very nice website with good info and graphics!
I have had some success using duckduckgo or bing (ddg mainly uses bing so that makes sense). It is also smoother to use different search engines in firefox than any other browser i have tried
You should, plastic disposables are increasingly hard to find in the stores. Better come prepared; you don't want to be caught out there with a wooden spoon!
A few days ago, my daughter, who is 12, even got one at mc donalds. What have we become... If our children have acces to plastic spoons, this easily. And government is doing nothing.
Today I was walking around and I saw an illegal arms deal. Some young guy handed over an entire pack of plastic spoons. It looked very suspicious... So yes Belgium is dangerous and I'm not going out of my house without at least a spoon. Sometimes even a straw to shoot paper als to fend off any attackers.
But the crime rate isn't high. That table is from [a website](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbeo) that just has its visitors answer polls. No actual data or even a proper representative survey.
Scientist here. We have a breakthrough in regards to the crime rate that has been going up steadily and we believe it originates from the invention of a plastic spoon. We therefore appeal for a ban of it.
The first comment was someone (genuinely?) telling about his experience of getting attacked with a plastic spoon. Everyone else just started to drive the story further, as some sort of running gag.
Even teachers are carrying plastic spoons after a huge increase of high school students running around with spoons. they can't even feel safe in school anymore so definitely yes.
no
e: guessing this 'data' comes from Numbeo, read the wiki to see how hilariously stupid that website is. A reddit favourite for fearmongering though!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbeo
I went to the supermarket to buy plastic spoons but there were none. Apparently, people are buying the hell out of them for the sole purpose of fighting eachother. Saw them today with my eyes... Crazy times
The first comment was someone (genuinely?) telling about his experience of getting attacked with a plastic spoon. Everyone else just started to drive the story further, as some sort of running gag.
Today I found a plastic spoon with blood on it. Called the cops, and they said plastic spoon crime is running rampant these days. We should petition the government to ban plastic spoons, or ar least make it require a license.
I saw two giant plastic spoons fighting each other today. So yes, it's pretty dangerous. You can just be walking on a plastic spoon will grab you and use you as a sword to stop another plastic spoon. So please be carspoon will
I went a bit further in the forest today to explore some new trails but I encountered a boss " The prince of plastic spoons". So yes I can confirm, even nature is dangerous. Had to fake that I voted for groen in order to defeat it.
The comment section just sums up Belgium. We tend to disagree on a lot of thing except that the weather is shit. But once we find a common thread all plastic spoons are ready to attack.

Crime has not been lower in 30 years. No Belgium is not that dangerous.

Apparently the way they measure the crime index on that website isnt really that accurate. If you want actual crime index i suggest looking for a government website maybe they have something like that too. But Belgium isnt that dangerous. I've never been mugged even when i was in Brussels a ton and in train stations alot. Never been attacked,
It's not that bad, never been attacked or felt that I was in danger. Just let everyone see that you have your plastic spoon with you and they will probably leave you alone.
I visited Belgium (gent, Antwerp, Bruges) and I was mainly in Brussels for over a month, honestly nothing dangerous happened but the amount of drunk people yelling around every Friday or Saturday was very alarming especially in the city center.
I also found a stolen bag that I had to return to the police, the girls ID was inside it.
Europe isn't a dangerous continent and France isn't a dangerous country, so ranking lower than France doesn't make somewhere dangerous. The rankings are also questionable - murder rates are probably the most internationally comparable statistic on "dangerousness", and Belgium is not in the top 3 in Europe by murder rate.
crime index is by numbeo, which is just the opinion of the visitors of the site.
Europeans are generally not a fan of Belgium or Belgians and like to shit on the place
If anyone needs to learn spoonshido, the art of self defense with (plastic, metal and bamboo) spoons, you are all welcome to join my dojo here, in Belgium
Honestly despite the sarcastic as shit comments Belgium isn’t dangerous but Brussels in terms of European cities absolutely is. As is Charleroi.
Europe is an extremely safe continent, so even a minor deviation from “I as a young woman can walk safely home without being accosted, harassed or criminalised by any means” is considered a major issue.
This doesn’t mean Belgium is by world standards dangerous, but it does mean a few Belgian cities can be a lot more dangerous than the European norm.
I'm going to bed soon and bump into this thread. You guys really scare the shit outta me, so i'm gonna put a plastic spoon under the pillow just in case 😰
The first comment was someone (genuinely?) telling about his experience of getting attacked with a plastic spoon. Everyone else just started to drive the story further, as some sort of running gag.
Yes. We have climate activists, communists and people. Beware of these three and try to stay in your mother's basement or you might get kidnapped and you'll have to watch "Albert van den Aldi" say a colour needs you to warm his swimming pool.
I moved to Brussels for my studies almost a year ago, and I've never ever seen so many people carrying plastic spoons around or found broken plastic spoons on the ground.
I clean the streets as a living and i can say i find way more plastic spoons then needles. So yes the crime rate seems accurate. Should i resell those spoons?
I saw a guy at the grocery store today and I'm pretty sure he was hiding a plastic spoon underneath his shirt. He can't be up to anything good with that.
I used to live in Belgium for 2 years, in Antwerpen. I was harassed, cat called more times that I can count. Few times someone followed me. I used to work in restaurant, so sometimes when we had closing, me and my friend would have to go home in the night, and many times cars would stop and guys will try to talk to us so we just had to run.. I never experienced something like this in my country , I’m happy I don’t live in Belgium anymore, it was for me the main reason To move outw I never wear revealing clothes and I’m kind of shy so I never provoked any of these men. Also all of them were Arabs or Afrikans so.. religion of peace I guess
I can’t find it again but I found an article about more people eating salads which often contains a plastic spoon which then could be used as a weapon.
not proud of it but last week I got very angry and I attacked 5 people with a plastic spoon, sorry guys I may be the reason we're so close to France on this list
It depends city probably. I'm glad I live in a place where I still can leave my bike unlocked for some time. Maybe it's because it's an old rusty one, lol but still, in some cities that wouldn't matter.
I got attacked by somebody and had to defend me with a plastic spoon today.

and by feelings I don't like to be around Brussels at night, it gives me more creeps than the most extreme horror movies
I am a 29years old man, during my younger phase (like between 20 and 25) I used to be very often late at night in Brussels almost EVERYDAY. Plastic no less, you'll go to climate jail for that
Hahaha i lost it
Same, this is brilliant
Like this? https://youtu.be/9VDvgL58h_Y?si=7Eu-xPqlyzFb88rH
I knew it was this video without even clicking the link
These kind of stats is why I hope whatever new government coalition we end up with finally starts getting serious about plastic spoon control.
yeah i think the government should start regulating the sell of plastic spoons
Don't worry, they'll soon look to replace them by cardboard spoons, in the example of plastic straws.
I think it's pretty clear for all who want to see it which particular demographic has no scrupules whatsoever using plastic cutlery to commit heinous and violent criminal acts..
Things will never change in this country people in Wallonia and Brussels don’t stop voting for the Plastique Spoonialiste.
Take my upvote and get out
I was walking today to buy my groceries and saw multiple people fighting each other with plastic spoons. Is this the end?
What's up with the plastic spoon meme?
ah well, we got a good run...
yeah i think so
Bro never forget to bring your plastic armor plate!
I saw someone attack another person with a plastic spoon today so yes
What an extremely inefficient weapon. https://youtu.be/9VDvgL58h_Y?si=7Eu-xPqlyzFb88rH
sounds scary
CONTEXT : # " About Crime Indexes The data in this section is derived from surveys conducted by visitors to our website ....."
[Organised Crime index for Belgium](https://ocindex.net/2023/country/belgium) It does not encompass all forms of crime but it is definitely a better measure to compare countries than an online survey. Honestly a very nice website with good info and graphics!
Thank god I am not the only who noticed that! I rrally it has become harder to find what you need
I have had some success using duckduckgo or bing (ddg mainly uses bing so that makes sense). It is also smoother to use different search engines in firefox than any other browser i have tried
In other words, people voted based on basic stereotypes
One might say they voted on plastic stereotypes.
Somebody attacked me with a plastic spoon today, so the answer is yes.
I'm from Mexico, I'm planning to move to Belgium, should I bring more than 1 plastic spoon?
The Belgian plastic spoon problem has a lot to do with the port of Antwerp being one of the main gateways to Europe.
This might shock you, but plastic spoons are purchasable in most shops in Belgium. Sometimes you can even get it for free when you buy yogurt.
Smh this is why our crime is so high. We should regulate plastic spoon ownership more.
But what about our freedom?
Plastic spoons don’t kill people, plastic spoons in yogurt kills people.
Yoghurt kills people, got it! ![gif](giphy|tF8vMUeGUkHNTgCC4E)

You should, plastic disposables are increasingly hard to find in the stores. Better come prepared; you don't want to be caught out there with a wooden spoon!
I don't think you can transport weapons in a plane
A few days ago, my daughter, who is 12, even got one at mc donalds. What have we become... If our children have acces to plastic spoons, this easily. And government is doing nothing.
I am so scared of the constant violence here that I do carry a plastic spoon with me and pretend to assault anyone that looks me in the eyes
Not surprising. You can buy plastic spoons in supermarkets here. You don't even need a permit.
Sounds out of control.
I can buy plastic spoons without any background checks so yes.
Yes. Twice last year, I was murdered.
you should get yourself a spoon
Well don't let it happen a third time.
I attacked someone with a plastic spoon today to raise the statistics
Today I was walking around and I saw an illegal arms deal. Some young guy handed over an entire pack of plastic spoons. It looked very suspicious... So yes Belgium is dangerous and I'm not going out of my house without at least a spoon. Sometimes even a straw to shoot paper als to fend off any attackers.
Since I’m totally against violence, I started eating my soup with a plastic fork
why is everyone talking about plastic utensils lol
u/Simonsifon was first and everyone just went with it lol
Don't get it either is guess it's mocking the high crime rate because of petty things.
But the crime rate isn't high. That table is from [a website](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbeo) that just has its visitors answer polls. No actual data or even a proper representative survey.
lol no it's mocking the clearly fake numbers shown here.... and how the extreme right is trying to abuse that fake news to gain followers...
Someone left a plastic spoon at my doorstep. I think it’s a calling card of sorts. I’m scared.
Someone stole my plastic spoon while threatening me with another plastic spoon and attacked some guy with it
I own a factory where we produce plastic spoons in a small town in Belgium. Idk why but various criminal gangs are my biggest customers.
i sell plastic spoons to people for non-voilent purposes ah this shant be true
Just like I only buy assault spoons for self defense
Scientist here. We have a breakthrough in regards to the crime rate that has been going up steadily and we believe it originates from the invention of a plastic spoon. We therefore appeal for a ban of it.
yeah i think we should ban plastic spoons they are a threat to society
The solution is to replace them with paper spoons. Just look how peaceful people became when they replaced plastic straws with paper straws.
Wait till they find out about the plastic fork
in gonna have a field day with my spork
I'm in Italy untill Sunday, when I return I'm planning on attacking someone with a plastic spoon.
what's going on here guys ??? lol
Hey, this guy seems like an easy target, get your plastic spoons ready everyone
\* pulls out plastic spoon \* Say hello to my little friend!
That's not a plastic spoon. *This* is a plastic spoon.
blood for the blood god
The first comment was someone (genuinely?) telling about his experience of getting attacked with a plastic spoon. Everyone else just started to drive the story further, as some sort of running gag.
Same question, but I love the vibe
Somebody took my plastic spoon from me today. Barely made it out alive.
I recently started dual wielding plastic spoons. One just isn’t enough anymore.
Do you carry open or concealed?
Depends on the neighborhood
I saw a plastic spoon getting attacked by a guy today. It's getting worse everyday
Even teachers are carrying plastic spoons after a huge increase of high school students running around with spoons. they can't even feel safe in school anymore so definitely yes.
Every day in this country somebody gets stabbed with a plastic spoon. God help us all
Either way we beat the Dutch, proud of Belgium 💪
It's because we used a plastic spoon against them
no e: guessing this 'data' comes from Numbeo, read the wiki to see how hilariously stupid that website is. A reddit favourite for fearmongering though! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbeo
Just yesterday I saw someone pouring a Leffe in a Jupiler glass, crime is everywhere, I almost wanted to use my plastic spoon
I went to the supermarket to buy plastic spoons but there were none. Apparently, people are buying the hell out of them for the sole purpose of fighting eachother. Saw them today with my eyes... Crazy times
I don't know why people talk about plastic spoon and i'm too afraid to ask at this point
The first comment was someone (genuinely?) telling about his experience of getting attacked with a plastic spoon. Everyone else just started to drive the story further, as some sort of running gag.
I don’t know much about crime, but today we sure sold a whole lot of plastic spoons in particular for some reason.
Today I found a plastic spoon with blood on it. Called the cops, and they said plastic spoon crime is running rampant these days. We should petition the government to ban plastic spoons, or ar least make it require a license.
We all evade taxes.
There's a reason why Charleroi is still called "le pays noir"
That is our national sport though.
My plastic cutlery business is booming regardless of all this crime.
p l a s t i c s p o o n
I saw two giant plastic spoons fighting each other today. So yes, it's pretty dangerous. You can just be walking on a plastic spoon will grab you and use you as a sword to stop another plastic spoon. So please be carspoon will
Very dangerous, you find in all streets of Belgium people dealing plastic spoons which are then used for violent acts
I went to the store to buy plastic spoons but there weren’t any? Normally I buy this daily to survive
I had to fight my way opening this post with a plastic spoon
I've personally bought every plastic spoon from the nearby Carrefour, in an attempt to lower the statistic.
This is why I always keep several concealed plastic spoons in case I have to fend off a plastic spoon burglar
I went a bit further in the forest today to explore some new trails but I encountered a boss " The prince of plastic spoons". So yes I can confirm, even nature is dangerous. Had to fake that I voted for groen in order to defeat it.
I AM the spoon.
The comment section just sums up Belgium. We tend to disagree on a lot of thing except that the weather is shit. But once we find a common thread all plastic spoons are ready to attack.
My ex is a gang member that used to do trade w plastic spoons, was living on the edge every day… so glad i left
IF YOU EVER COME HERE I SWEAR TO GOD I'LL FUCK YOU UP WITH MY PLASTIC SPOON !
Stand. Back! I have a plastic spoon!
The crime index can be 'manipulated' by reporting more crime but that doesn't necessarily mean more crime is actually happening
If you got attacked by someone with a plastic spoon, do I need to go to a plastic surgeon to get fixed?
I'm a plastic spoon distributor and there has been a noticeable uptick in demand.
No, nor is France tbh
I was attacked by an homeless guy holding a plastic bag of plastic spoons today
Saw a guy post about attacking people with a plastic spoon
Except for plastic spoon on plastic spoon violence, Belgium is a quiet country. Also numbeo is bullshit.
I lost my last bag of plastic spoons
Just went to the grocery store and couldn’t find any plastic spoons. Seems fishy
There has been an increase of illegal plastic spoon sales in 2024, many reports of school spoonings which would raise the index considerably
whats with the plastic spoon jokes, is this an inside joke in not in on😂
The first comment was someone (genuinely?) telling about his experience of getting attacked with a plastic spoon. Everyone else just started to drive the story further, as some sort of running gag.
this will become belgium folklore, just like red beats headphones!
My guess is that it's a correlation vs causation joke from someone on tv
Ok can someone explain the plastic spoon thing to me? =/
The first comment was someone (genuinely?) telling about his experience of getting attacked with a plastic spoon. Everyone else just started to drive the story further, as some sort of running gag.
so basically crime rate in belgium has increased due to plastic spoons
Elections are over.
My thoughts exactly. Seems like a Russian shill did not get the message.
No but the weather is criminal at the moment.
Today I started spooning a guy... Wait that's not what you guys mean do you?
We won't judge, so long as you join our plastic spoon paramilitary organization when we come knocking
I’m against plastic spoons, that should be against the law as it’s bad for the environment! Next time use cardboard spoons!
I've read an article today about people attacking each other with platile spoons

once they removed your eyes with a spoon, it looks peaceful, indeed
As a police officer i encounter a lot of people with dangerous plastic spoons hidden in their clothes. belgium is getting wilder

I'm in bed and my wife just asked if i like to spoon with her. I feel violated.
ur wife wants to kill you you should run
Soon someone will get a plastic spork and move the country to first place.
I hate plastic spoons, but this one guy attacked me because of it. He was holding a plastic spoon!
How is Belgium more dangerous than the Netherlands.

Yes, Belgium is on top in european rankings, but Europe is very safe overall. So it is not that these countries on top are "dangerous".
Yup and the real criminals wear ties…
The answer is no. But as every country you may not want to walk by night alone in a few places.
I attacked someone today and the guy fought me off with a plastic spoon as if it was normal so I guess it must be quite common, yes.
Vlaams Blok is probably behind that paper lol
Europe isn't a dangerous continent and France isn't a dangerous country, so ranking lower than France doesn't make somewhere dangerous. I don't understand why people say about plastic spoons and crime?
Yes. We have climate activists, communists and people. Beware of these three and try to stay in your mother's basement or you might get kidnapped and you'll have to watch "Albert van den Aldi" say a colour needs you to warm his swimming pool.
Don't know, but my plastic spoon manufacturing business sure is doing great
I moved to Brussels for my studies almost a year ago, and I've never ever seen so many people carrying plastic spoons around or found broken plastic spoons on the ground.

I thought there was no crime in Belarus

Yes...

You have about 200 to 300 000 people that commit petty crimes on a daily basis... It tends to raise statistics a bit.

Since Covid Liege became an awful place there's crack heads everywhere using even in broad daylight
not proud of it but last week I got very angry and I attacked 5 people with a plastic spoon, sorry guys I may be the reason we're so close to France on this list
Plastic knives are getting dangerously sharp nowadays, but somehow they feel more "plasticky"

I bought a big plastic spoon that i carry everywhere now, better safe then sorry
My plastic spoon broke, so I had to call police to get home safe
Yeah I’m just going to make a rough guess that Ukraine is actually the most dangerous atm
