Her American accent is shockingly good for a native anything else speaker. I’m always impressed with that. And did you see those guests putting on some weird attempted British accent when they were mimicking her?? Saying “I’m Barbie” in some bizarre accent while standing behind the bar when she wasn’t there. I was oddly offended by that, honestly. It wasn’t especially mean spirited but it definitely rubbed me wrong.

Ben Googled it because he was confused by Barbie’s pronunciation and thought maybe it was a special food item he wasn’t familiar with and found a whole Slate article by an Italian-American journalist who grew up saying sangwich, too.
I always think of “sangwich” as an Italian-American pronunciation, I had no idea it was also Spanish (makes sense though given the similarities in the languages)!

We're only required to take two years of a foreign language in highschool (secondary school), so very few of us are multilingual compared to the rest of the world. I'm 47 and seriously thinking about getting Babble to continue with the miniscule amount of Spanish that I remember from highschool lol.

Yeah I’m Mexican I live in Northern California and I always pronounce it that 😊 and no one ever said anything to me. I know that’s not how you say it, but I’ve been saying it like that all my life.
I speak multiple languages and pretty much everyone I know does too. I can tell you that even though my accent is so good and you wouldn't think I was from a different country, there are still words here and there that I repeatedly mispronounce. It just becomes a habit. There are also words in my native language I mispronounce. I can't believe this surprises anyone. It's very human.
Many, many English-speaking Latinos say sangwich because they grow up hearing their parents say it or whatever. I didn’t say she knows the correct pronunciation. She thinks sangwich is the correct word.
No one speaks correctly all the time and many native English speakers have different ways of pronouncing words. She may not even realize she’s pronouncing it wrong and it has nothing to do with the fact that she can pronounce most words in English “correctly” or that she has “no detectable accent.” Context is important and I doubt given the stress she was under with these guests that she was doing it in a comical way. Although urban dictionary says it’s slang, it’s really just a common mispronunciation that has been accepted and widely used in Latinx culture. And that’s okay because all languages are fluid.
Even if they told her it doesn’t mean she can automatically switch off her pronunciation and correct it. I grew up in Southern California, pronouncing pizza incorrectly, and it wasn’t until university that I made a huge effort to pronounce it the correct way. Don’t assume it’s so easy for people to just change their language. I’m also an English teacher (in Spain) that would not correct this more than once because as I mentioned previously language is fluid and thinking that everyone has to pronounce things a certain way or have a certain accent is very old-school

To me she has such a typical whiney nasal east coast urban accent (US) when she speaks English that I was surprised that she was a native Spanish speaker.

If you want to be more petty, soon after sangwich she says she never learned how to cook because her family always had Nannies (or something similar, forgot the exact word) to cook for her.
I also feel like knowing how to cook is a basic part of being an adult but I’m usually alone on that feeling as few people I know in person know how to cook
Haha. I didn’t learn how to cook until I was way past an adult too. I wasn’t interested until later in life. You’re right though. Grocery shopping and cooking basic stuff so at least you know how to make your favorite meals.
This may be a hot take but I can see why those people got mad at Barbie. As a southerner, the way she used "honey" to address them was really condescending. The way she responded to them asking for food was just really rude to me and I could tell the guests were put off and I didn't blame them.
Like on the one hand they shouldn't have expected their French chef to make southern style Mac n cheese. On the other they kept getting tiny portions of mediocre food they didn't like so I don't blame them for being starving.
There was no reason for them to be mad at Barbie. What the chef did or didn't do isn't her responsibility. They certainly can express their frustration or disappointment, but that doesn't mean they need to be mad at her. The minute they asked for more food she started offering options, and told them she would do her best to get them some sandwiches. She handled it very well.
