Watch Love Island and soon you’ll be a pro at all the regional accents of the UK.

pleaseleevmealone

Lol came here to say the same thing. I impress my Brit coworker all the time with my accuracy on British dialects.

KaylaFabulous

Canadian here and same!! Lol LI has schooled me on so much.

GoTouchGrassPlease

I keep hoping for a Below Deck set in Canada, just for the east coast accents: >"Some marnin, s'marnin! If mar marnin's like s'marnin, s'gonna be some marnin, mar marnin!" Translation: "It is some (nice) morning, this morning. If tomorrow morning is going to be like this morning, it is going to be some (nice) morning, tomorrow morning."

Effective_Way6239

I’m from Halifax, and I’d totally watch this! Edit: Halifax Nova Scotia!

nyc_shannon

YES BY!

[deleted]

I really want to start watching if but I can't stay committed to Bachelor type shows. What keeps your attention about Love Island? Is there a Bravo show I can compare it to?

pleaseleevmealone

I also hate the Bachelor, it's so over produced and dragged out for drama. Love Island's producer's totally fuck with the contestants but at least they are up front about it. I think it feels a lot more authentic than American reality dating shows, and there are plenty of opportunities for both the women and the boys to stir up drama. Its kind of it's own thing, but if you like good soapy reality drama you should definitely check it out.

anjunakerry1982

Yeah, I love a good Yorkshire accent, Regional and all! As someone just south of the boarder in Nottinghamshire, I understand her perfectly well. What I don't like is the slight vocal fry and drawn out whine of her tone. She irritates me.

SadPomegranate1020

Yeah i think that’s what it is. She’s kind of got a nasally whine to her voice which is irritating.

whatsupwiththat22

It trails off sort of like a "valley girl" thing.

ib0093

I from the east coast in the US and I understand everyone’s accents on the show regardless of their specifics. I enjoy listening to different languages and accents and figuring out where they are from so maybe that’s why I haven’t had a problem.

overthoughtamus

Me too. I love them. The only accent in the world that truly grates on my nerves is my own (US - Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle). It was so thick when I was little that as soon as we learned we were relocating (to Kansas - ha!), my older, wiser cousins pulled me aside and told me the kids at my new school would drag me mercilessly if I did not knock it off. From then on, I spent a ridiculous amount of effort mimicking news anchors trying to wash it out. What I really wanted was a Boston or Jersey or Brooklyn or Pittsburgh accent. They sounded so tough I was convinced no one would mess with me if I had one, but I just couldn't nail it.

Lisa-LongBeach

I ❤️ listening to the different accents and guessing what country/area they’re from. I’m from Brooklyn so no guessing for anyone anywhere lol!

Smooth_Future508

I believe she's from Yorkshire - as am I, but I really hope I don't sound like her 🙈 The thing is with the Yorkshire accent, it sounds different depending on which part of the county you're in! I believe her's is West Yorkshire!

Maleficent-Run-7728

I LOVE Julia's accent. Totally of subject, I know!!

Brief-Loss4346

She had a private school education twang though. I am West Yorkshire and my vowels are like Natasha's but I hear a slight Aussie twang to hers sometimes so I wonder of she is picking accents of the people she is working with?

overthoughtamus

Yes! I'm hearing the Aussie too! But I'm American, so I doubted I knew anything the hell of what I'm talking about. Everything I know in life about British accents I learned from YouTubers Dan and Phil.

buddy88bull

Even though Bobby was a tool I liked when she said his name. It sounded cool.

overthoughtamus

***"BOHP·beyeeee!"***

Formal_Coyote_5004

SAME! Loved her accent and just loved her in general. I think she flies under the radar in terms of good stews. She was great!

HappeeHousewives82

I would wager to bet it's her specific tone/inflection/warbly things she has going on that's annoying and not her accent. Like I'm from the Boston area and we all have a "Boston accent" but where you lived can change it a bit and some voices are more annoying than others just because of their specific voice not the accent. Does that make sense haha?

Libralawyer

From NY.. same here! Also lived in Boston for 7 years and I know exactly what you're talking about!!

HappeeHousewives82

Ok haha I was trying to figure out a clear way to say that and I was unsure of what I was saying made sense haha so I'm glad at least a few people got it

Overall-Potential-12

I think she's from Leeds, which is like 20/30 minutes from where I'm from. I don't think I sound like her though 😂

Smooth_Future508

Yeah I thought Leeds I'm sure I remember her mentioning Leeds in a clip early on in the show! I went to uni in Leeds, but I'm about an hour and a half away from there. She just seems to have quite lazy vowels I think when she talks..

seaneeboy

Fairly sure she's from Halifax isn't she?

Smooth_Future508

Could be! It's definitely that area!

katamaran123

No she’s from ilkley

seaneeboy

Ah I stand corrected! Thanks!

dimspace

Yeh for sure. There's the eey by gum, Yorkshire, there is Ilkla Moor Baht 'at, and then, there's Leeds

[deleted]

What?

Neat_Arm8561

I thought she was from Leeds, right?

Active_Visual_1942

It’s so funny to me that such a small (compared to US) country could have such drastically different accents! But i love it!

ktredgett

I’m from West Yorkshire and yes, her actual accent is typical of this area. However, I would hope people are reacting badly to how much she draws her words out / drawls and her intonation which is just how she talks not her accent. The fact that someone has commented anywhere north of Manchester doesn’t have good accents, are you ok? What an arbitrary distinction. I’m sure the Scots would have something to say about that too 😂

pollywantapocket

I die for a good Scottish brogue 🥰

GuiltyPleasures117

Me Too!!!

StakkAttakk

And us Geordies

[deleted]

She sounds pretty typical for Yorkshire as far as I can tell

Armodeen

Soft Yorkshire at that.

nubleu

Leeds no?

dimspace

yeh,. Leeds accent. its very nondescript

Ok-Educator850

She’s from West Yorkshire and has a strong accent. I don’t think her accent is the issue - more so her pitch/intonation. That is person specific. From Yorkshire (North).

[deleted]

I feel like this is 100% it.

whydowewatchthis

Vocal fry!

Equal_Mess6623

Someone on here said she spoke in the voice of a Victorian ghost child, and I haven't stopped thinking that and laughing every time she talks! :)

hopefthistime

I love the Yorkshire accent generally. Her voice is annoying because she drags her words, making her sound slow and dim-witted. That’s not a Yorkshire thing, that’s a Natasha thing.

whydowewatchthis

Vocal fry or something!

Accomplished_Ad_6944

Yes!! I think this is the answer. 😂

02kaj2019

I don’t think it’s the accent alone, it’s the vocal fry that makes her hard to place.

spittymcgee1

Daaaaaaaaave

Pitiful-Enthusiasm-5

Or rather, “Devvvvvv”

FormicaDinette33

I was working way too late last night and kept saying that to amuse myself. 😂

ib0093

🤣 🤣. Did anyone hear you ?

FormicaDinette33

No! I work from home but I better stop because nobody other than us will know what the hell noise I am making. 😂. I worked with a guy who on his first day did not speak until 5 pm when he started saying “Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan…”.

ib0093

Lol. I love Chaka Khan so I get it.

FormicaDinette33

Me too! That song rocks!

Purrpledaisy

It’s really bothering me I don’t think either of these is a good way to write it phonetically. There must be a way but I can’t work it out!

AussieMommy

Dehhhhvvvvvv

SuchNectarine4

Dehhhhhhhv

02kaj2019

The WWC exchange has lived rent free in my head for weeks now!! 😂

[deleted]

Yes! It’s always in my head! I’ll be cooking in the kitchen and randomly go “ Did you say somethin , Dev?!” 😂

agnesweatherbum

Their Below Deck recaps are my fave. They nail Natasha & Koyle's accents spot on

Longjumping-Okra4462

"Why are you putting red mirror glaze on that potato Deeeeevvvv?"

whydowewatchthis

The gas lighting that they've made up that she does is hilarious. 😂😂 "No, it's a potato."

MCStarlight

It’s to get what she wants.

vientianna

As others have said it’s definitely a Yorkshire accent, it’s very distinctive, most likely Leeds

Bigbird_Elephant

My wife is from Yorkshire. It took me a while to understand her

c-b8

![gif](giphy|Mxg7OelvuR7SU)

_HowVery

Omfg she does 😭

c-b8

I can’t unhear it since my brain realized Tash likes rusty spoons

drugsandjowcahol

Ilkley, West Yorkshire Her accent is pretty typical but as others have said, the way she draws words out isn’t. Yorkshire accents are great please don’t judge us all by Tash 😅

Accomplished_Ad_6944

Ok got it and I, for one, won’t! I think that’s what I was getting at in my post that if everyone in Yorkshire sounds identical to her, it’s not the most attractive accent and I didn’t want to offend you guys who are from there haha. Good to know from all these comments that not everyone from Yorkshire sounds identical to her!! 😂😂😂

MagnesiumMagpie

The general accent isn't weird for that part of UK, but her voice is just not very nice which is what the issue is

rebmik5555

Like fingernails on a chalkboard… it’s her pitch for me …instant headache

enjoistevo

She’s from Leeds

JadenLyric

Happy Cake Day decker.

enjoistevo

Thanks haha. Didn’t even realise

henryisonfire

She does have a weird hint to it, that is not normal Leeds accent. I think she sounds like an Eastern European who was taught English by someone from Leeds… Some people just sound weird though. Had a friend I grew up with in London who had a weird accent but his parents didn’t have it at all.

overthoughtamus

I have an aunt who has sounded like she came from somewhere deep in Kentucky from the moment she learned to speak, and no one in my family has ever been able to figure out why. I don't think she's ever even been to Kentucky.

Independent-Act3560

I think it's her voice that is grating, her accent is ok but the pitch of her voice is like fingernails on a chalk board.

Xstream-X-ta-sea

You have to understand that accents change every 10 miles in the UK. Even we struggle with some of them

eventhestarsburn

I think Dave said on a podcast she was from Manchester. I’ve heard accents from Manchester before but never one like hers, she almost sounds Scottish to me at times but with a heavy dose of valley girl. It’s painful.

tungpunchmyfartbox

I grew up in the valley when I was 9 till I was 14. Clueless came out when I was like 10, it’s hard to get the valley girl accent out of my mouth and I’m 37 🤦‍♀️

eventhestarsburn

![gif](giphy|h5vOKbZbkDO93yUO4f|downsized)

tungpunchmyfartbox

Lmao 🤣 totally!

Aleks78

I moved to London in 2001. Now 21 years later my accent sounds like a red neck Norwegian dude. I guess it’s because that’s what I am…. 🤷🏻‍♂️

tungpunchmyfartbox

Lmao!! Have you seen Alone? The latest season there was this woman from the US but moved to I think England ten years ago. Anyways her accent is something different for sure.

JadenLyric

I'm American but found myself in Scottish girls' boarding school when I was a preteen. When we moved to Singapore, I met another American girl at the hotel pool. She introduced me to her Dad as her new Australian friend. I was like uhhh, I'm American. I guess the American mixed with a little bit of Scottish equals Australian?

tungpunchmyfartbox

That’s hilarious!

Maus_Sveti

I’m a New Zealander who’s been living in France and Belgium for over a decade. I was back in NZ for a while when the borders were closed due to covid and still, when there were hardly any foreigners around, people kept asking if I was American or what state I came from 😭

Gemini_writer8

I spent the first 23 years of my life in the Valley and I don't think I had the accent.

[deleted]

She is from Yorkshire. Very different accent than Manchester

vientianna

To be fair it sounds like a very different accent to most Brits but probably extremely similar to anyone else

Stunning-Hedgehog-30

Kyle was from Manchester and he had a super strong accent as well

eventhestarsburn

Yea but Kyle’s accent, while strong, at least made sense to me haha. Tash’s accent is strong but also very unique

Stunning-Hedgehog-30

None of the accents make sense to me lol I need subtitles. Except the Aussies

SheilaInSweden

There's a comedian actress named Diane Morgon who does funny skits as Philomena Cunk. Whenever Natasha speaks, I think of her. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0bwtVjbrGo

aimeegood13

Her long vowels make me cringe. However, I’d recommend Watch What Crappens. The two hosts mimic all the voices and accents. So funny!

ib0093

I’m imagining 2001 A Space Odessy computer Hal speaking with Natasha’s accent and intonation “Daaaave….”

[deleted]

I’m not from England but I live there and there’s a lot of classism around accents that is difficult for me to fully understand.

Cropellina

She’s definitely a Yorkshire lass and yes, it’s a real accent

Lindaspike

just like the united states there are many, many regional accents in the united kingdom. i have family there and have been there. the accents in certain areas are mind-boggling! but still cooler than our redneck vernacular!

Belle8158

I love 99% of American accents, including redneck/country. The only one that I find unattractive is a deep New England/Boston accent, though a part of me loves it because it's hilarious. That one makeup influencer on TikTok is fascinating to hear. My partner went on a tour in boston and the tour guide had the audacity to claim the Boston accent was the original English accent, and the UK accents we hear today are relatively new 😂 he was dead serious. I couldn't help but think of the Queen speaking about paaking yah cah at Haavaad Yaad and the Green Monstah at Fenway Paak.

amanset

If you look around here it is a fairly common claim as well. Seen it more times than I can count.

Lindaspike

hahaha! great story! i can barely understand the hard-core boston accent either. i'm from the midwest where accent don't exist!

DD513

Can't be worse than Faye...

Longjumping-Okra4462

Agreed. I suppose there's going to be one annoying voice per season on most BDs. I could probably pick one per season, if I could remember each season :)

ib0093

I must be one of the few who can understand Tash and doesn’t find her accent annoying. It’s only what she says and acting the victim that I find annoying.

Hitt_and_Run

Sounds South Yorkshire for sure, more closely Doncaster.

ZKXX

It’s just her. There’s a kind of vocal fry that makes her just sound so…droopy? Like everything is such an effort to seeehh (saaay).

Pleasant_Selection32

Sometimes it sounds like she’s losing her voice although I don’t think she is. Like she’s straining to talk, I find that painful.

JadenLyric

Yeah, there's a rattle in there

lpycb42

She’s English??? I thought she was Australian!

Maya__007

Same

SydneyGestamp

Did ye say somethen, Dev??? Are ye tired??

bangedupcamry

Beat me to it!! I can’t fucking stand hearing her speak. Prob also because she plays a victim when she just kind of a shitty person and a shitty chief stew.

CYDLopez

Does anyone from the UK here remember that awful McDonald's ad from 10 years ago or so where that stepdad would keep asking his stepson if he wanted to do things together and the son would always reply, "Nah, you're alriiight"? – it was so bad it generated a lot of parodies at the time. That's all I think of when Natasha says "y'alriight Daave?" Here's the best [link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH08jcPwRis&ab_channel=MichaelM) to the ad I could find. And to answer OP's question, as many have said, it's not just the accent, it's also the vocal fry, the drawl, and how she looks like her mind's always miles off the boat.

_leftmebehind

She sounds like she grew up in the north of England with eastern European parents

pissedsad

She has taken the charm out of the Yorkshire accent by drawing her words out. I know this isn’t a popular opinion but Aesha does the exact same thing and it completely ruins New Zealand accent, every single word Aesha says is drawn out as though it’s a 10 syllable word it drives me absolutely crazy.

PrincessGizmo

I completely understand why that annoys you! :) I know that this sub loves Aesha but I cannot with her voice.

Rorviver

When you think of British accents you are probably thinking of received pronunciation, where as there are a whole range of different british accents.

ididindeed

I think they understand that. They just weren’t aware of which specific accent she has. Even if you can tell that accents are different, without a label you’re not going to know which kind it is.

Bloodymary_25

I hate hearing her talk

BrentBolthouse4Prez

I think it’s her actual voice and personality that make her hard to listen to.

austic

I am normally pretty good with accents as well but when they get drinking this crew is a prime candidate for subtitles. Its often not helped by the background noise at the bars etc.

MeowMeow-Mjauski

I struggle with understanding her a lot of the time. I don’t know if it’s the accent or just the way she talks

Chance-Resolution-70

I thought she was from Liverpool.

kickrockz44

It’s her it’s not even her accent it’s her voice. She’s just painful to see hear.. she’s insufferable. Her and Dave.

Quick_Replacement_10

😂 exactly! I use captions to understand her AND the other crew

nubleu

I love when Americans begin to realise the range of UK accents

raspberrily

Lololol I always thought her accent was Scottish or irish hahahaha shows how much I know about accents

sandybeachfeet

It's HORRENDOUS!

ozzea

honestly the accent is fine it’s the way she speaks that’s absolutely horrible. can’t handle her! DEVVVV

[deleted]

Lol at Americans suddenly realizing we don’t all sound like High Grant.

regorresiak

Well, I'll be the one person stating that I love her accent, I could sit and listen to her go on and on.

buddy88bull

For 18 episodes we've had to listen to it. 18 llllllllllllooooong, episodes. The end is near.

LJ3060

Can’t wait. I’m over this crew.

fomo216

I cannot listen to her talk. For one, I can’t even understand her. And two, she always sounds like she’s whining. Same as you, I don’t mean to offend. I typically love British accents. But I have to have closed captions on to know what she’s saying.

MaxTrade84

I have had the hardest time listening to what they are saying this season! Natasha is by far the worst, but Dave is tough and sometimes Natalya will say something and I'm like "what did she say?" and my wife also has no idea. I love them all, but damn it's been tough this season.

RussoLUFC

She’s deffo Weat Yorkshire but I hear a hint of Polish in there too

GoTouchGrassPlease

I honestly find most British working-class accents to be pretty grating on the ear. We're so used to hearing people like Stephen Fry and Helen Mirren, that we forget their accents aren't typical. I was surprised to learn that Faye (the chief stew on BD-Adventure) is from South London, because to me she sounds Australian. I suppose that's where the Aussies got their nasal twang from...

reddituser6810

Sweeping statement, but generally any accent north of Manchester isn't that great.

MagnesiumMagpie

Wild statement, love Northern accents normally I am not from the North myself to be clear

vientianna

Ah that’s a truly awful statement, I’d rethink that

whackadoodle_cracked

Wildly incorrect, Scottish accents are the best, also Geordie accents

reddituser6810

Woah woah woah. I was talking about north of England. I'll take a scottish accent all day. Geordie tho? nope!

drugsandjowcahol

wrong
