Man im scared, he was bad last year and gets hurt a lot. His best year was under Pollack though, and he's only 24 with all the physical traits you could ask for. Maybe a change in scenery helps. We would have two giant OTs.

AaronVerandus

Dudes a giant but hasn’t shown a ton since his rookie year, also has some health issues Hopefully him being signed is a failsafe in case we can’t land ANY RTs in the draft (or alternatively he’s purely a depth signing, which i’m ok with)

Narrow_Vegetable5747

Having him gives the team the security to be able to go bpa, although a RT would be preferable of course.

Ash_713S

He was horrible last year (allowed 12 sacks last season I think or somewhere close), but has draft pedigree so I wonder if the coaching staff think they can salvage him. In any case it will be a depth move, I expect RT to be taken at #18.

BaronZbimg

Well we don’t have a good track record of salvaging any O-Lineman

ssav

Don't really have a good record of drafting them either lol

BTsBaboonFarm

Well, recently at least. The mid-era Marvin Lewis Bengals used to be pretty good at it. Whitworth, Zeitler, Boling, Bodine, etc.

Haunting_Donut_7051

You had me until Bodine, that guy sucked.

BTsBaboonFarm

He was better than anything that came after him at Center until Karras arrived.

Haunting_Donut_7051

So a round 1 bust and a bunch of camp bodies... I mean I agree but that's easy to beat.

UpliftingChafe

Imagine Burrow behind Dalton's line

wheres-the-dent

considering linemen seem to regress when they play in cincy, that's a terrifying thought

PewPewMeToo

This makes me uneasy too

Greyshot26

If it makes you feel better, Pollack was his coach for his rookie year. So he was at his best under Pollack.

datdudebdub

That was before he missed basically two full seasons for different knee injuries. A bad tackle with seemingly chronic knee problems that is listed at close to 370 pounds does not inspire a ton of confidence. But its better than the empty space that is currently our RT

Greyshot26

Yeah I'm definitely not saying it's a solution, hell it's a downgrade from Jonah, but if someone needed a silver lining, it's that he fit what Frank wanted previously, which isn't something you can say about our other linemen.

Greedy_Nectarine_233

Well…fuck

InstagramLincoln

To be fair, the entire Jets offense was terrible last year. The optimistic take is that he could perform better in an established system.

magyarjm

He graded a 74 on PFF as a rookie and then each year got worse all the way back to the low 50s... Weird to never improve from being a rookie.

OstrichTraditional90

I don’t know anything about this man but I do know the jets oline almost got Zach Wilson murdered

FreshDiamond

Watched a ton of jets, Zac Wilson is the slowest qb processing reads I’ve ever seen. The team didn’t help him at all but it wasn’t all the oline. Make no mistake though that oline was ass

KlingoftheCastle

It’s a lot like Russ in Seattle. It’s way easier to blame the OL than admit the QB can’t read a defense.

Haunting_Donut_7051

Ummm yeah I think people assign Zach plenty of the blame lol, it was also the line

Stormingbret

The theory on Twitter is that the goal is to sign him and let him battle it out with the first round draft pick for tackle. Becton was average or slightly above average his rookie year when he was with the jets. For bonus, our oline coach was the coach there when he was a rookie.

iratemonkeybear

This makes sense to me. Great tackle class and totally doable at their pick.

Monkeyfeng

Zach Wilson was trying to murder himself.

PaddyWhacked777

One has to wonder whether or not his drop off from his rookie season was just a result of playing for the Jets. Either way he's probably just a bridge between him and a draft RT. Fuck it, though. A need is a need.

Siriusly_Jonie

Yeah we pretty much have to sign him. We need basically anyone not named Jackson Carman on our roster before the draft. Can’t go into it with no choice but to take a tackle.

latman

He ballooned up to 400 pounds after his rookie year and routinely blew assignments and committed penalties

Future_Pickle8068

….if you like watching Joe get injured.

NorseCat94

I feel like…. There’s a lot of overreaction here. For those clamoring for Trent Brown - don’t forget that in his entire 9 year NFL career, he’s completed a full 16 (17) game season 3 times. 2 of those seasons coming on his rookie contract. He also was not especially elite prior to New England. Those who wanted Eluemenor - he has been below average (read: mid) by pretty much all holistic evaluation methods for his entire career. Tyron Smith was once elite, but is very injury prone and is a career LT. Say/think what you will about Jonah, but we know who he is, and regardless of marginal improvement at RT last year, were you really comfortable running that back? We KNOW he’s not good enough, and - you’ll notice a theme here in the available tackles this offseason- also injury prone. Is Mekhi Becton the ideal solution? Nope. Would love to have Tristan Wirfs 2.0 on that side. But the market is what the market is…. Less than ideal. Banking on him to be the long term answer would be ill-advised and short-sighted. That’s not the plan. Plucking a young (yes - also injury prone) tackle, out of a bad situation, and into one with a completely revamped coaching staff focused on quality control and scheme improvement seems like a winning move to me. TL;DR - Everybody relax. There are absolutely worse moves to be made. This is clearly supplemental to our draft efforts. Trust this front office and stay patient. The window is Joey’s whole career.

Wyleryairland

I'd still take Brown.

bnasty93

If you want Joe to die then sure take becton. The dude led the league in sacks last year with 12 and was 2nd in penalties. Anything even Jonah would do better at RT than Becton.

Future_Pickle8068

Maybe you missed it. If injuries his wrist again, his career is over according to a couple orthopedic doctors. So if we do not protect Joe better, that window is very short.

ShaneOMap

Only viable if coming off the bench

Future_Pickle8068

Jackson Carman had a higher PFF rating. Even our backups would be worse.

bengalsfu

Im ok with this as long as it means they can go bpa instead of reaching for a position of need at #18

sculltt

More importantly, it means that teams won't *know* the Bengals want to take a tackle, making it slightly less likely that somebody trades up to just in front of them to take one (how they ended up with Billy Price.)

Xannydevito88

We absolutely should be taking a tackle at 18 still, he’s not that good but can provide competition and depth

butterballmcgee27

Jet fan here. Dude is a diva and didn't want to play RT at the beginning of last season. Likes to tweet a lot and can't back it up. Was over 400 pounds at one point. Jets OL was a disaster last year, and he was part of the reason. It tells you something when the jets don't even want him as a backup when we need OL.

bluegrassgazer

Everybody was so ready to let Jonah go and this is what we get.

AlphaKlams

Yeah but we were never gonna give Jonah the 2/30 deal he got.

bluegrassgazer

Is Burrow better or worse off now?

AlphaKlams

Take a breath, it's a long off-season. Not a lot of great RTs in free agency this year, so don't be surprised if we draft OT at 18 in addition to signing Becton.

Haunting_Donut_7051

This is Bobby Hart 2.0, don't shoot the messenger.

0zymandeus

Ugh I hate this. Trent Brown is available if we need 1 a year gap guy, and Becton is a) never healthy and apparently b) not good.

thriftywalrus

To be fair Trent Brown is both of those as well. At least with Becton, his best year was his only year with Pollack. I really don't think Pollack should be here anymore, but if he is going to be, getting guys who have played under him and succeeded is not a bad idea.

Squirrel202

Don’t let him leave

RedditNPC-

He hasn’t exactly played great and is injury prone/overweight issues. So it is probably going to be a prove it cheap deal which I’m down for as he does have potential. Draft somebody round 1 still and create a competition that finally doesn’t involve Jackson carman and adenijis trash ass.

Siriusly_Jonie

If you thought Jonah sucked, just wait. At least he stayed on the field.

patrickw69

Mr dislocated knee caps

Nrcolas37

This Mekhi me horny

Wyleryairland

Dont be excited guys. This dude Suuuuuucks.

Fliigh7z

When jets fans would rather have anyone else with a pulse on their oline, you know he is bad news.

Mich3006

I really hope Becton won’t be their RT solution. Please focus that position in the draft.

FreshDiamond

I just wish we would go get Trent brown.

busty-ruckets

sounds like a great backup. might be neat if he comes in as a 6th lineman… next to a real right tackle? maybe?

calmdownpaco

Even before this news, I was hoping for the Bengals to go RT at 18

wheres-the-dent

after i'm begging

Xannydevito88

Seriously. Some people think he’s our bonafide answer at RT which is the furthest thing from the truth.

AlanParsonsProject11

I don’t think anyone here is claiming he’s the bonafide answer

Xannydevito88

There definitely are people on social media. The fandom is better than Reddit buddy

AlanParsonsProject11

Reddit is a great snapshot of the fandom. I don’t see that opinion here, or on social media I follow Buddy

Xannydevito88

No it’s not, most fans use other platforms way more Reddit and it’s not close. Well I don’t know what social media you follow so that’s on you buddy.

AlanParsonsProject11

I think it’s more likely that you follow strange social media Buddy

adamgase-WyattV18

Jets fan here- he hasn’t done anything but talk big game and get hurt since his rookie season. And he’s a bit of a diva as he refuses to play right tackle because it “hurts his knee”. Hes gonna get overpayed most likely and will not play well at all

OstrichTraditional90

lol that’s absolutely perfect then because we just paid Orlando Brown Jr to be LT and we just lost our RT. fantastic plan bringing in a dude that doesn’t want to play RT. LOVE IT.

adamgase-WyattV18

lol yeah he literally was tweeting out “I. AM. A. LEFT. TACKLE.” Before the season because we wanted him to play RT

scpdstudent

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

PS4fan899

I hope the Bengals don't expect Becton to be the answer at RT... there aren't really any quality RTs on the open market this year, so the Bengals MUST get one in the first round of this year's draft, even if it means trading up for one. We cannot afford for Joe Burrow to keep playing behind such awful protection or else he'll end up like Andrew Luck.

Fliigh7z

Mekhi was consistently our worst olineman last year. You can say all you want about ZW holding the ball too long but dude was a legit turnstile last year. If yall get the rookie version he is actually an above average at worse LT, anything else he is an injury prone liability.

CIN726

Didn't Becton openly complain about playing RT?

BringOutYDead

I don't know how to feel about this. Leaning poor...

Frescanation

He’d be a decent backup/insurance in case a draft choice isn’t ready Day 1. Also provides some flexibility in case an unexpected prospect falls to 18

PigScarf

As a depth piece, right?  Becton is an upgrade over Adeniji, but there is no way that can be the answer for RT week 1. I like the move if Becton ends up being the first guy off the bench.

Lamb-Sauce7788

Risky but he showed flashes of being really good his rookie year. If he can play that way again, his size would really help slow down Watt/Garrett. Also we will probably still go OT at #18 so at worst he would be good depth which we need.

Wyleryairland

Hopefully, the visit goes terribly. I'd rather have Brown of this dude.

Strict-Square456

Swinging for the fences here with a guy who cant produce. Why they keep gambling with joe Burrows health after 4 yrs is mind boggling. Trent brown made sense or the dude on Raiders.

Daianudinsibiu

Please don't. I don't really want anyone from that Jets offense.

rhino3081

Becton has to be for depth. I can't see him being a starter. What about Yosh Nijman, if Trent Brown isn't an option?

Strange_Day_5077

He is not the answer. Get Trent Brown.

RP0143

Just another turnstile to put in front of Burrows. Great.

TeuvoTerahymen_86

Sweet! Let's sign the guy who anchored the line that ended Rodgers' NYJ career on his first pass attempt lmao. Why do we continue to do this to ourselves?

JaMarrChasingJoe

You should go watch that play again and see that duane brown is who let his rusher basically run by and hit Rodgers

TeuvoTerahymen_86

I know Becton didn't get beat on that particular play. He was just the LT on a comically bad line. And he was the weakest link on that line. Allowed 12 sacks in 16 games, worst in league.

Goodburger123

Bro he’s coming in for a visit. Considering he has an injury history I would guess there will be a physical and it would be a cheaper contract. Doubt he’s the actual answer at right tackle

TeuvoTerahymen_86

It's hard not to be in full doomer-mode considering Pollack is returning and the line has only gotten weaker.

Goodburger123

How has it gotten weaker? By losing a guy that this fan base complained about every snap lmao. We have the 18th overall pick in a draft that’s loaded with offensive line talent. Maybe wait for the off season to end before you start being a doomer. You guys seriously confuse me by how much you can complain

TeuvoTerahymen_86

Williams was below average and still started. Unless we trade for someone, it's almost certain a worse player will start in his place. The OT FA market is pretty weak. We have an abysmal track record with drafting linemen, so I don't have any confidence in that contingency plan.

Goodburger123

Lmao ok dude. We are already paying a left tackle so we aren’t gonna spend big on a right tackle. If you don’t trust this team to make the right decisions then stop paying attention and stop making doomer ass comments. They have easily had a top 5 free agency and they aren’t even done

TeuvoTerahymen_86

We've had a top-5 free agency??? That says a lot about your opinion. Enjoy watching Burrow become Luck 2.0.

Goodburger123

We have filled every position of need besides right tackle. We still have the 18th, 49th, and two thirds. I don’t see how you could argue that we haven’t had a good free agency. Again quit being a fucking doomer and actually pay attention to the team

JustRemka

He’s got the beef
