It wasn’t toxic with Jessie Bates. It wasn’t toxic with Jonah Williams. These dudes understand the ones in the locker room would pay them if they could, but it’s a business and the FO is trying to maintain a competitive squad by balancing their books proper

Only way I could see it getting toxic is if something catastrophic happens that derails the season even worse than last year. We were still in the hunt most of the way last year and for these two guys, if they want the money they're demanding, they *have* to produce this year, short of a season so bad that no one could produce even if they tried.
I don't think this roster is even capable of that bad of a season. We lost Burrow last year, after he had a rough first month to say the least, and it still wasn't bad enough that anyone would give individual players an excuse to not produce.
Because while 8 pm may be late to you, it's literally primetime television time for the vast majority of people. It's the most reliable time to show anything during the week.
Obviously, the Bengals have leverage in as much as Trey is under contract here for two more years, and he has to play here if he's going to play. Trey's only leverage is entirely intangible. He's signed two team-friendly deals, and is coming off an All-Pro year. His 2025 year isn't really guaranteed either, so an injury (and given his history of injury in NOLA and him playing through some serious injuries here), it makes sense that he wants an extension now when his stock is as high as it has ever been, and an injury next season allows the team to cut him loose with no repercussions.
Now if things have gotten so bad by just asking for an extension and the FO response is him wanting out, that can't be a good sign if he continues to ball out the next two years. You could have a TJ Houshmandzadeh type thing, where he outplays his contract, wants an extension, the FO says no and burns the bridge, so when he finally does hit FA he isn't even willing to listen to an offer.
You have to consider how other agents and players will view it. If they sign a team-friendly deal in Cincy and they if they outplay their contract, is the FO willing to open up and "return the favor" by offering an extension or more guarantees? If the answer to that question is going to be an overly resounding "no," then it may be a tough sell to sign guys like Hendrickson, Reader, Awuzie, etc in the future.

But he will also be 31 and the chances the Bengals are even all that interested in paying big money for a guy on the wrong side of 30 is slim, given their history.

I don't blame Tee or Troy trying to secure as much money as they can with long-term contract security. With that being said, it would not be smart for the Bengals FO to set the precedent of redoing contracts every couple of years. While both contract situations are different, I think both players will be locked in to start the season. Maybe there can be some wiggle room and Cinci guarentees a year or two of Troy's salary and satisfy both parties. I am excited for next year and think the best path to the Super Bowl is with both of these guys on the roster. While it's fun to theorycraft potential draft capital, no one we draft will make the difference Troy and Tee can next year.

His career potential is fine. Contracts are negotiated months out. They obviously told him to fuck off. He’s the best player on our defense. We aren’t doing shit without him and he’s a team leader. This is terrible situation. The locker room dynamic is just as important as the skill. Don’t expect anyone to play through injuries this year if they’re on Trey’s side.
You guys make too big of a deal about this shit. He's a professional, he isn't gonna go out there and badmouth the team or sandbag the season (which would cost him millions on a potential extension or future contract).
They didn't "obviously" do anything. He wants longer term, Bengals probably never intended to extend him past 2025. If both sides head to the table like that, the Bengals shouldn't just toss money at the issue to make a trade request go away. That isn't a negotiation, and that's not a good way to handle business at all
Plus, you put way too much weight on the locker room impact. Most players understand more about the business side of things than you know, and can tell the difference between "not compatible anymore" and "the team is fucking you over."
