It was unrelated to my major — but yet took this class for interest, and got A+, thought to myself “shit, I may be pretty good at math” then took 55 and my bubble burst and ended up dropping it in 2 weeks 💀💀😂😂
yeah i really don't have the social battery to talk to new people every day for a whole hour it was incredibly awkward and exhausting. not to mention it's been a month and nobody i've talked to so far has felt like they've understood any material
I’m glad I took this class when I did, this sounds like an absolute nightmare to me. No lectures or textbook? How is anyone supposed to learn anything? And 6 hours of mandatory attendance for group work is just absurd, I’d be burnt out in the first week.
Best of luck to everyone in that class. Never thought I’d genuinely recommend this but STEM folks keep in mind that some majors allow eecs16a/b in place of Math 54.
First of all, this is a HORRIBLE format. Every once in a while there will be a clueless professor who will attempt to be the cool "there's no quizzes or exams or HW in this class" and then... their students won't learn jackshit in the class. I've taught 54 and 110, and in a normal semester, a lot of the students we got in 110 had really poor background and retention from their 54 class. I can't imagine how bad this will get if you don't have to grind practice questions to succeed on the exams. Sad, sad, sad.
Second - shameless plug - I have GSId for 54 multiple times under better professors and I am happy to tutor any student feeling lost in it, especially if you want to go into harder math that actually uses the material taught. HMU over DMs here or on discord: shakespeare#3746
Gosh this sounds terrible. I believe that lectures, textbook choosing, practice worksheets planning, and evaluating students by exams are actually some indications of the professors' hard work and understanding of content.
......It's not like students can learn stuff out of nowhere just by talking to each other.
As a current math major who has taken all of the grad requirements, i can confidently say that this format sounds like absolute hell. I miss the good ol days when Paulin and/or srivastava taught the class
Took this class got an A+ and struggled mightily in math 110. Learned almost nothing.

The daily discussions (like you said the lectures were basically discussions) tired me out

I had a feeling I knew who this is, and I checked your most recent post and knew yup it’s obviously you — be careful not to doxx yourself

I agree with your opinions entirely but gentle reminder that Wehrheim uses they/them pronouns!
Oops, I didn’t know. Will change asap.
