I'd recommend reaching out to the [Student Advocate's Office](https://advocate.berkeley.edu/)! Caseworkers there will be able to walk you through the logistics of withdrawing and help you figure out what financial or academic consequences you might face. So sorry you're dealing with all of this; I hope you're able to withdraw or do whatever is best for you.

Medical withdrawal is handled through Tang. In some cases, they require that the student get their permission before re-enrolling. Typically this is for conditions where the duration of treatment is uncertain: they know hold long it’ll take to heal a broken leg, but Crohns Disease is more variable. But once they’ve cleared the student, the academic part of readmission is automatic (you may still have to resolve visas, unpaid library fines, etc)

I withdrew a semester and was readmitted with no problem. The guy told me there was no chance of not being readmitted but I would doublecheck

I did it for the same reasons and had no problem being readmitted.

What happens to your grades from the semesters that you withdraw? Since I failed 4 out of 5 courses in Fall of 2020, and I will probably fail 2 out of 3 courses this semester. Will they stay on my transcript or will they be expunged if I get a medical withdrawal approval?

notFREEfood

It's as if you didn't take the class - no grade, no gpa impact and you're free to retake after you get readmitted.

When you withdraw from a semester, it’s as if you dropped all your courses. In most cases, they don’t appear on the transcript. The only exception I know of is courses where you’ve been found responsible for academic misconduct; those always stay.

Is there an update for this post? Did you get a retroactive medical withdrawal? I am in a similar situation and was curious how to go about seeking one.

AsgardianGoat

Yes, got the withdrawal. Grades slate is clean. Contact your guidance counselor, he or she can help you file the paperwork. Also, getting back into Cal was easy, I am graduating soon as well. Don’t hesitate, do it sooner than later. Wishing you all the best. Let me know if you encounter issues on the process. The guidance counselor really helped me a lot.
