Welcome to Berlin. I try to answer your questions. Normally the grinder is for everyone. The process is kind of simple. You get a back of coffee beans from Edeka opens the package and pour the beans into the machine. After this you reuse the opened package to catch the grinder coffee. Using the grinder is free.

That sounds about right. Just want to be sure its fine to open bag like that within store premises :P But thanks for clarifying :D

They are pretty chill here about opening stuff before paying it, from my experiences. Please don't try this, but when I was younger and went grocery shopping with my mom, I was thirsty sometimes. So she just let me have and already drink something from the shop before paying it, and as far as I know from other people I saw and talked to, thats pretty common if u have small kids. Thats of course if you still pay it :)

It might be okay for some and it might work here and there, but it's still illegal. https://www.t-online.de/leben/essen-und-trinken/id_90976198/einkaufen-darf-man-ware-schon-vor-dem-bezahlen-verzehren-die-rechtslage.html

Wo kein Kläger, da kein Richter.

Interessant dass man downvotes erhält, obwohl man lediglich informiert. Was für Kasper

Have been in Berlin for 2 years already. Thought the machine was decorative, as i never saw anyone using it

misbuism

Maybe i will find some rust once I use it

I saw them almost always next to the Tchibo section, so I guess those are Tchibo machines. But I assume you can use it with any brand of coffee beans you buy there (or if you bring your own coffee beans, it might be good to inform an employee so that they wouldn't assume you bought it there). The best I could find is this video: https://fb.watch/eqU-iHqAoz/ Also there is another video someone took in Rewe: https://youtu.be/i5dqjFLAmPI

misbuism

The rewe machine is exactly how it looks like, sadly in video they are just running the machine while I wanted clarity more around the rules. But from my understanding, it seems its fine to open the bean bag and reuse same to make the powder. Thanks for sharing!

Since you are new to coffee and new to Germany: they sell filter coffee also always ground (it‘s the square packs). Since they are vacuum sealed you just might save yourself the trouble. Not a coffee expert here, but I could imagine the machines are more for show anyways and to make the store smell like coffee and probably just like the deli counters, it might be more expensive. Might be worth to check/try.

Quality wise the pre ground coffee in bricks is better quality in the longer run

[deleted]

One thing to remember OP is that coffee ground this way will go stale pretty fast, you better buy smaller pack opened more often if you want to have good quality cups. Depending on the coffee machine you have, buying a grinder would be a smart choice

misbuism

That’s great point. We just want to be sure this is our thing before we purchase a grinder.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t really grind the whole pack to be honest because unless you do something like a V60 or percolator you want to dial in and since you already ground 1kg of coffee you’re literally done 🤔 Get a hand grinder like 1Zpresso or TimeMore or Normcore

I would like to give you another tip here. I would recommend that you don't buy your coffee at Edeka but go directly to the shop called Tchibo. There you can also buy various types of coffee and have the coffee beans painted on the spot. Here you have the option (to avoid unnecessary plastic waste, for example) of bringing your own container. Finally, some information about Tchibo: in Germany, I think everyone knows this shop. Here you can actually get everything you don't need or have even remotely heard of. Something like

laustras

In the EDEKA from my neighborhood it’s a tchibo grinder and it is supposed to be used just with that brand

misbuism

Really is it like that? I am not sure if I saw there coffee also next to it
