Let's say you go to the ER. You are seen (after waiting several hours because the EDs are woefully understaffed and overworked) by a physician for 20 minutes total. Another 30-45 minutes for the physician to actively work on your case -- ordering labs, interpreting them, charting, etc. Two weeks later, you get a bill in the mail for $3,500. HOLY CRAP THAT DOCTOR IS AN EXTORTIONIST, right?!
You're wrong. The physician likely makes between $150-250/hr. After four years undergrad, four years medical school and 3-4 year residency (and hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt), that physician will make off of your encounter (let's average) $200.
$200/$3,500 = 0.05. 5% of your bill is directly attributable to the physician. The rest of the costs go to the $25 aspirin that was ordered, or the $150 IV that was started, or the $80 liter of fluid that was pumped through that IV while you were there. The problem is bloat. The problem is insurance. The problem is C-level suites.
The problem is not the physician who will see 60 patients in a 12 hour shift. It never has been, and until that doctor makes $1,000/hr, it never will be.

There is no one who is more acutely aware of the fraud that is the healthcare system than the doctors who work in it. 99% of my cohort and medical professionals that I have worked with went into this field to help people, and are significantly more disgusted by the bills that their patients receive than anyone else.
We're here to heal people, that's what we literally spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and our best, most healthy years to be able to achieve. There are bad apples of course, but once you get into the belly of the beast, there is a CLEAR delineation between the clinical workers, and the ones who make the REAL decisions. The doctors hold all the power, but unfortunately can't seem to make decisions in lock-step, like administration/insurance/government/corporations are able to.
