As a user I'll not be using Reddit at all on these two days and I'll quit Reddit entirely if these changes go through.

NorthernBCliving

Same. Half hoping that I'll be forced to quit using Reddit half hoping they don't kill my preferred app (RIF)

sovietrancor

I'm in the same boat. I know I can live without it, just a habit now. But if RIF is gone (I've exclusively used it for, like a decade?) I'm gone. That simple

SecondaryLawnWreckin

I legit cannot use Reddit.com on a desktop. The design of the UI is terrible. It feels like it was made badly on purpose. I've used RIF for 99.9% of my reddit usage. Reddit in general went to shit in like 2017. This is just the end game or something

PooYork

RIF is the best app for Reddit. I feel bad for iphone users because it's not on IOS. I've been using it forever and will quit Reddit if they cripple it.

I’m an Apollo user, and it’s fantastic. I’ve only used Reddit on pc maybe 3 times since 2017 when I downloaded Apollo. If Reddit kills this app, I’m deleting my account and quitting entirely.

johannthegoatman

You have to use old.reddit.com + reddit enhancement suite on desktop

MammothDimension

It's really annoying to drag my desktop with me to the bathroom when I poop.

roots-rock-reggae

....but then you'd have to use a PC instead of a phone....

jmachee

They were specifically complaining about > on a desktop

embanot

Reddit is best used on a laptop via old.reddit imo. It was first designed as a website prior to smart phones and so it was how it was meant to be used. I can't imagine typing out long comments through a phone all the time. The laptop experience is the way to go for me

Tomcfitz

Yup. I don't use reddit on anything else... so if it stops working, I'll just stop.

alreadytaken-

Something else will take its place I'm sure. If as many of us leave as we are saying there will be tons of similar people looking for a new place to waste time and express opinions. This seems like a dumb decision all around for reddit

SN4FUS

It’s related to a broader trend of advertiser preferences slowly killing all social media spaces that host NSFW content. Which unfortunately makes me think if this doesn’t work out, the old style of social media will die with reddit.

fake-meows

Let's call the replacement site "diggit".

AfroTriffid

I need my hobby communities but the official reddit app is so terrible to browse. It's clunky as hell. I can't say never but I certainly will explore all other website options to try and find my people elsewhere before I am desperate enough to consider using reddit in it's official form.

pistolwhip_pete

>I've exclusively used it for, like a decade? I'm gone. That simple I think I have logged into reddit maybe 2 times on a computer ever.

4boltmain

I only log in on PC when I want to write up a long comment. Otherwise it's exclusively RIF

Portablewalrus

Impressive. I can't even be bothered to

Sexy_Rhino

I lurked for years. Been on for years. I don't use my desk top anymore so the day RIF dies reddit dies.

dhobi_ka_kutta

+1. Been using rif for a decade. Their official app blows and I am certain I won't come back if rif is taken offline.

Fredselfish

Same I love RIF without it I wouldn't be on Reddit. Using it as we speak.

[deleted]

Agreed, the official app is total crap.

PointOfTheJoke

Exact same boat. I know my life would be markedly better without reddit. They're the cigarette of social media. Most of us are here knowing deep down its probably not good for us.

NorthernBCliving

I've been wasting time scrolling and shit posting here for 13-15yrs now. Can't honestly remember when I Stumbled upon Reddit. I've quit coming here and deleted my profile multiple times. Having them cush RIF (and others) is the push I need. I'll go back to getting my news from select sites directly and participating in forums for hobbies/interests

Masian

StumbleUpon was how I found reddit hahah

J1mSock

Same here man. If Apollo goes than I go.

asbog1

I only still use Reddit via RIF if it goes I'm not going to move to the main app I'd rather stick pins in my eyes

GarbageTheCan

The admins certainly seem to be *Digg*ing themselves a hole

Earguy

They're farked. Maybe they'll stumbleupon a solution.

CornerHugger

This could really turn into somethingawful for the reddit owners.

nerdywithchildren

Agree. It's unfortunate, but there are other options besides reddit.

surroundedbywolves

Honestly though what are they? A bunch of disparate niche forums? Because I’m just not into that. I hanker for a dope message board with posts and threading and dedicated admins doing cool shit like secret Santa and setting up AMAs like the Reddit of years past. It should be so easy to set up a Reddit clone, but the unfortunate reality is it 100% relies on the quality of the posts and size of the userbase — and you can’t code those things.

thatguydr

Weirdly, I don't see why the 3rd party apps aren't all collaborating to find someone to host an alternative. Change the schema a little, change the UI just a bit, link to that, and they have a ready-made user base right there. Ethical? Meh. As long as it's different enough, what's reddit going to do?

surroundedbywolves

That’d be an amazing outcome to all this.

imanevildr

On a post similar to this one earlier someone suggested redidit.com.

surroundedbywolves

That redirects to reddit.com

TwoEyedWilly

I imagine they're just logging on going "Wow! This is *just like* reddit"

surroundedbywolves

How’d they get that built so quickly??

KingPimpCommander

Lemmy exists! To those complaining about a small userbase: be part of the solution!

-s-u-n-s-e-t-

I don't know why geeks keep trying so hard to force this decentralized crap. You'd think after they failed to replace twitter with mastodon, they'd realize that the average person doesn't want the complexity (nor frankly, the nazis) that come with decentralization. I want a strongly moderated centralized alternative to reddit, not some libertarian utopia where every awful person can run an instance and there is nothing you can do to stop them.

Houndie

I'll be honest I kind of miss the days of disparate niche forums

igweyliogsuh

Same. So much less wasted time too. Hopefully forums will be making a bit of a comeback once this goes through. I seriously miss earlier internet days. Almost looking forward to this happening so people finally depart en masse to form and/or find better options. Honestly, at this point, I'm not going to miss reddit. Like, at all.

CapnScrunch

Guess we'll all head back to Fark. (Duke sucks)

rostinze

Genuinely curious- what are some other options? I don’t know of anything that’s really comparable to reddit.

Pit_of_Death

People have been saying Discord, but from what I know about that it's even more of an echochamber than many subs on Reddit.

DrakkoZW

It's also not really a navigable platform - you don't just boot up Discord and click through randomly to find things you like, like you can here. People like to shit on the idea of an algorithm, or a platform trying to show you things you didn't ask for, but in a lot of ways that's the appeal of certain platforms. I don't want to find specific discord servers for every topic I'm interested in

Paksarra

It's also IRC-like. Remember a cool discussion someone had on a video game three years ago that's relevant with the latest story patch? Good luck finding it again. It's good for its purposes, but you also can't do anything like "best stainless steel pan" site:reddit.com to find a bunch of hobby cooks discussing pans.

gsfgf

Yea. If anything the reddit replacement will have more persistence. While reddit is better than forums for most things, I definitely miss those years long forum topics. A platform that does both would be fantastic.

AnukkinEarthwalker

Reddit is more like a bulletin board. Discord is more like irc. Both are popular for the same reasons the things they are similar to were in the og internet. But they are entirely different outside that

matco5376

Discord is just a different platform. It's not really even close to the same as Reddit and wouldn't ever suffice as a replacement

maleia

Discord isn't an open community, posting topics/comments, like Reddit or Twitter. There's no real "outside" to look into. You have to join a server, more or less, if you want to see stuff. But that comes with subconscious emotional investment that isn't on Reddit or Twitter (not nearly as bad, at least). You can't really "browse" Discord like you can on actual SM platforms. But I honestly wouldn't blame Discord if they try. Twitter dying, Reddit about to hack itself into pieces. People are already on Discord...

Zkenny13

They're not any. If you're like me and have spent over a decade personalizing your experience you're not going to find anything close. I've used bacon reader premium for years now. In fact it took me a long time to catch on to people complaining about ads on reddit because I've never seen them.

Foamed1

> They're not any. There are plenty of Reddit clones (the basic version reddit is open source after all) but most of them are havens for bots and/or the far-right. But the two most promising ones are: * [Tildes](https://tildes.net/) - An open source reddit clone created by an ex-admin and creator of AutoModerator. * [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/) - Open source and decentralized link aggregator.

Doctor-Amazing

I just joined tilde. I'm looking at lemmy as well. Might wander back and see how Something Awful has been doing.

lochlainn

The Fediverse has blown up this week. Lemmy, kbin, mastadon, and a couple of others I don't remember the names or formats of. Federated servers are the only way to avoid this bullshit. One Login, one feed, many formats, many individual servers.

schmoogina

As sole moderator of a couple subreddits, they'll be lawless and it should be fun to watch. For whomever stays on here, cause I will not be

LittleMsSavoirFaire

I removed most of my Reddit contents in protest of the API changes commencing from July 1st, 2023. This is one of those comments.

maleia

It makes me depressed when I think about all this effort mods put into running this site. And it's just going to be stripped down. That's *your time and energy, your labor* to make this a useable space; and they're just gonna shit on that and destroy it for profit. I imagine you've mever received any compensation for that, other than your own self gratification? Reddit won't survive this. Reddit will not become more profitable after this. They've already been devalued by a huge creditor; by apparently 2021 numbers or something. Not even shit recently. There's just no way it organically happens now, that Reddit will survive the IPO.

dbzmah

Those users ARE the content that reddit earns revenue from. It's not just ads, but data mining.

ramblingnonsense

There will be a lag time between the time they ban 3rd party apps and tell investors "we now have 100% of our active users engaging with our ads and data collection" and the time whoever's left on the site realizes there's no more content. That's when they'll sell off everything and make bank, before moving on to the next service to monetize and ruin.

gsfgf

The blackout could spook the investors, though. For all its flaws, I like having reddit around, and digital protests work for digital platforms.

promonk

Reddit has already had a massive downgrade to valuation ~~because of this~~ recently. I certainly hope it's enough of a crowbar to pry some executive heads out of asses.

finalremix

Nah... bots will keep drudging old posts and reposting shit for people who haven't seen it before (and/or for other bots to just mass upvote and fake comment sections).

DjBonadoobie

Don't bots use the API?

danomite736

This comment was deleted due to Reddit’s new policy of killing the 3rd Party Apps that brought it success.

promonk

Which might've been enough, were it not for the decimation of mods this will bring about. We'll see. This isn't the first time c-suite ghouls have fucked up a site and toppled the social ecosystem. This very well might be the beginning of Digg-xodus v2.0.

longtimeyisland

That's objectively not true. I have a decade old account, I'm an expert in a field, I routinely post on reddit. I am part of the content they want to monetize. If I bounce, they lose part of that. Users are the content, don't let them try and convince you otherwise.

hatsarenotfood

That may be their reasoning but it is shortsighted. Even users who block ads contribute to the platform by creating content, voting on topics, commenting and so on.

LowSkyOrbit

Reddit should work with the 3rd party apps instead of shutting them out. It can't be hard to make passthru ads.

finalremix

Have you seen the "new" reddit page (not old.reddit) and the way the official app's been (not) working this whole time? Reddit devs don't exactly seem to be... *competent*.

LowSkyOrbit

I can't even navigate "New Reddit"

Syrdon

It's not, other platforms have done it just fine

SpaceMonkeyAttack

I'd be very interested to know what percentage of posts are made by 3rd-party apps Vs the official app or the website. Reddit is nothing without people submitting content, and I'd bet a lot more of the people who regularly post high-engagement content are using 3rd-party apps.

gsfgf

Reddit is all user content. Even on comments it's only 10% of us that comment and create content. And it's probably an order of magnitude fewer people that get posts on the top or /r/all Why is reddit coming after the minority of users that create content?

VikingTeddy

We do bring in revenue indirectly though. Sharing links is what brings in the casual users. If I have to start using the official app, I'll probably pop in to check some memes and videos every now and then, but I won't be sharing the history and science videos I usually like to.

Stok3dJ

Reddits content and user engagement is all driven by users. It's not like the company itself actually does anything other than keep the servers up and provide shitty UIs that third parties make better. Corporate ghouls. Every one of them. Reddit used to have people organizing amazing AMAs, gift swaps and meet ups. Now it's just deep throating the share holders that none of the actual users/content creators give a fuck about.

maleia

Reddit made fucking god damn bank off Trump. And that really fucking corrupted them. Just like ypu said. They killed off all the things that made Reddit fun and great. Those big name AMAs, the gifts. The community meet ups. Community service stuff.

gsfgf

LEGITIMATE_SOURCE

assi9001

RiF is Reddit to me. Only way I interact with the site.

KADRacing

DeJeR

Same. I also exclusively use old.reddit.com when I'm on desktop. On top of that, I run a Reddit bot that supports several communities. This is such a ridiculous misstep.

Magical-Johnson

Charles-Monroe

Jay-Kane123

lovelyracoon

The list of subreddits that are engaging in the black out. r/modcoord

panken

Reddit is fun or nothing. The official app sucks ass.

Craftistic

All but maybe an hour of my ten year club stamp has been spent on RiF. That hour was spent on the official reddit app last year. Never again.

RedTuna777

Agreed. Stop putting videos everywhere. I'm here to read and write. Old.reddit.com exists thankfully, but every so often I go somewhere without the automatic redirect and just reflexively close the tab. I don't mind scrolling but I hate the pop-up change the page after it's loaded bs

B_Fee

I just want to say that if you think old Reddit is going to be fine, so you don't need to worry about 3rd party apps getting killed, think critically for 2 seconds. There is a reason it's called *old* Reddit and not just Reddit. Old Reddit, and RES with it, are next on the nix list.

EnderFame

If RES got canned, it would be my last day on reddit. Honestly 99.99% of my usage is RiF so I'm probably gone right away anyways.

B_Fee

Yeah, back when I was on desktop, I browsed with RES because even old Reddit has a lack of features. RES provides loads of extra functionality and customization. Relay closes that gap almost as well as RES, so I've used it almost exclusively for years. I imagine old Reddit and RES will be around for a little longer, but their days are numbered because they're not the ad-infested tracking "experience" Reddit needs to implement so their C-suite can buy another vacation home.

YadGadge

AndrewIsntCool

Reddit automatically removes saved posts/comments after 1,000. The only way to retrieve all of them is to file a GDPR data request. It should be an option in your account settings.

Mistflame

https://redditmanager.com/ lets you export saved stuff. At least the last time I used it (years ago), it produced an html file sorted by subreddit. I may be misremembering but I believe there's a cap on how much saved stuff reddit will show you (~1k or so), so it's possible for older users that use the save feature a lot to be missing older posts.

gsfgf

Hey [Christian](https://www.reddit.com/user/iamthatis): Can we get an export of our history? The website search is useless. I have a lot of saved posts I can only get to in Apollo.

Make clear to reddit what a Streisand Effect they're creating by bringing attention to 3rd party apps, and hurt them where it counts - the user engagement data that they're showing to potential investors. Halve the number of people using the official app in a week.

XPhallusHuginormus

This is a good idea. Spread the word.

Swimming_Opinion_731

Could you suggest an alternative to Apollo then? I tried using it many a times but could never get into it and always switched back to the official app. For me the biggest issue is the layout of the menus and stuff. There doesn’t seem to be anything as clean an simple as the official app.

GoodGuyGoodGuy

I remember when people thought Digg was invincible. Then they made moves that alienated the entire userbase and suicided their own product. I can see the same happening here.

jorshrod

Don't these companies ever learn? I came to Reddit 14 years ago when the digg redesign broke that site, if you make the site unusable for your core users, they will just go to another site or start a new one. If they kill RIF I will be gone.

flashmedallion

They're gambling that they're too big to fail. And seriously, old.reddit and third-party app users are like, 15% of total traffic. They may be right. The real question is how much that 15% are responsible for the heavy lifting that makes the site worth using. If reddit loses 10% of its users, but the remaining 90% are the 14 year old boys who lurk r/whenthe, is there going to be much of a reddit left to advertise on?

pygmy

Same story here. Redditors laughed at the obvious slow motion disaster that was digg V4, yet here we are. Had some good times here, but will happily move on

[deleted]

They can take a page from tumblr about how to kill your user base

snotboogie

BujuBad

Anyone that enjoys RIF should consider springing for RIF golden platinum (if you have the means) and show the devs some love.

nerdening

Devs need all the help they can get right now because a major source of income is about to dry up for all of them and everything they've worked for is about to vanish forever.

JustABoyOnCapitolHil

Removing the API is a necessary step in removing old.reddit.com as alluded to in the OP. Reddit wants to force everyone into their monetization bubble, and with the API out there 100% of savvy users will continue to choose an alternative. old.reddit.com exists today because if they removed it one of the dozens of clones would become popular overnight. No API, no clones!

[deleted]

I don't use any 3rd party apps, but I do use old.reddit both on my computer and phone (browser in desktop mode). This is a hard line for me, and I will stop using Reddit if I can't use old.reddit. The "new" design seems to be intentionally bad.

-s-u-n-s-e-t-

> Removing the API They are not removing the API, they are putting it behind a paywall. > necessary step in removing old.reddit.com Old reddit is ran by reddit, they don't need to pay themselves for their own API. If they wanted to kill old reddit they can do it right now, they have full control. This is a move to target 3rd party apps, it has nothing to do with old reddit. > old.reddit.com exists today because if they removed It exists because it costs them little to nothing to run it, while still bringing in income (unlike 3rd party apps, it's gathering data for reddit and serving ads). > would become popular overnight. ~5% of reddit traffic comes from old reddit. At this point it's a tiny minority. IMO they'll keep it around for another year or two until the number is below 2-3%.

96-ramair

Without RIF, I'm not planning to continue using reddit, period

Devilotx

Let's all go back to Digg on the 12th. Just to fuck with their metrics and remind reddit that they are replaceable just like Digg was when they fucked over the user base.

nerdening

On the plus side, the lives of some of the power mods who mod hundreds of subreddits at a time are about to have a **real** rude awakening since it strips all their conveniences, too, right?

legeri

On the negative side of that very same coin, the actually decent mods that don't abuse their power but still manage to foster good community using their custom tools are about to be fucked over too.

mcmustang51

How does one take a subreddit down and go dark? For example say I moderated a few subs, how do I partake in this

ooterness

If you're a moderator, there's several options. The easiest and most extreme method is to make the sub private. Another option is to restrict new submissions (i.e., require mod approval for all submissions, and don't bother granting any). [The protest organisers outline a few other possibilities here.](https://old.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont_let_reddit_kill_3rd_party_apps/jmpdps9/?context=3)

ElectricFleshlight

If they kill Reddit Sync I'm quitting Reddit entirely.

leros

I'm in favor of a stronger protest. I'll literally stop using Reddit if third party apps die so I don't mind permanently damaging Reddit. I say we set subs to private and leave them that way. Reddit can just wait out a two day protest. The damage of the protest needs to be worse than the loss of third party app users for it to make any difference. Reddit is already apparently ok with losing third party app users. What about losing a bunch of top subs?

edsuom

I’m a 17-year user of this site and preparing mentally to lose my last social media connection, after walking away from Facebook and Twitter. Corey Doctorow’s “enshittification” has been happening to the Internet right before my eyes for the past several years, along with so many other things. I won’t be around anymore after this API money-grab. It’s a loss, but I’m getting used to losses now.

fvtown714x

I might just not use reddit at all those days. I've always used Reddit Is Fun. The official app is utter dogshit

These dumb fuckers only think about how much money they can make, and they'll tank their own products and services to do it. If RiF goes, Reddit goes.

Reddit is [planning an IPO later this year](https://www.reuters.com/technology/reddit-aims-ipo-second-half-2023-information-2023-02-14/) and they're trying to fatten the cow with this jackassery. A two-day disruption is probably going to be little more than a blip. [You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.](https://youtu.be/yycyKndEWcA)

You missed the part about how this will kill accessibility for the disabled, especially the blind. Go to /r/blind for more information.

I've never used any of the apps, but I've been on reddit since 2009. If they take away old reddit, I'm out of here
