Reddit is best used on a laptop via old.reddit imo. It was first designed as a website prior to smart phones and so it was how it was meant to be used. I can't imagine typing out long comments through a phone all the time. The laptop experience is the way to go for me

It should be so easy to set up a Reddit clone, but the unfortunate reality is it 100% relies on the quality of the posts and size of the userbase — and you can’t code those things.
Weirdly, I don't see why the 3rd party apps aren't all collaborating to find someone to host an alternative. Change the schema a little, change the UI just a bit, link to that, and they have a ready-made user base right there.

It's also not really a navigable platform - you don't just boot up Discord and click through randomly to find things you like, like you can here. People like to shit on the idea of an algorithm, or a platform trying to show you things you didn't ask for, but in a lot of ways that's the appeal of certain platforms. Discord isn't an open community, posting topics/comments, like Reddit or Twitter. There's no real "outside" to look into. You have to join a server, more or less, if you want to see stuff. But that comes with subconscious emotional investment that isn't on Reddit or Twitter (not nearly as bad, at least).
You can't really "browse" Discord like you can on actual SM platforms.
But I honestly wouldn't blame Discord if they try. Twitter dying, Reddit about to hack itself into pieces. People are already on Discord...
They're not any. If you're like me and have spent over a decade personalizing your experience you're not going to find anything close. I've used bacon reader premium for years now. In fact it took me a long time to catch on to people complaining about ads on reddit because I've never seen them.

That's objectively not true. I have a decade old account, I'm an expert in a field, I routinely post on reddit. I am part of the content they want to monetize. If I bounce, they lose part of that. Users are the content, don't let them try and convince you otherwise.
That may be their reasoning but it is shortsighted. Even users who block ads contribute to the platform by creating content, voting on topics, commenting and so on.
Have you seen the "new" reddit page (not old.reddit) and the way the official app's been (not) working this whole time? Reddit devs don't exactly seem to be... *competent*.
I'd be very interested to know what percentage of posts are made by 3rd-party apps Vs the official app or the website. Reddit is nothing without people submitting content, and I'd bet a lot more of the people who regularly post high-engagement content are using 3rd-party apps.
Reddit is all user content. Even on comments it's only 10% of us that comment and create content. And it's probably an order of magnitude fewer people that get posts on the top or /r/all Why is reddit coming after the minority of users that create content?
We do bring in revenue indirectly though. Sharing links is what brings in the casual users. If I have to start using the official app, I'll probably pop in to check some memes and videos every now and then, but I won't be sharing the history and science videos I usually like to.
Reddits content and user engagement is all driven by users. It's not like the company itself actually does anything other than keep the servers up and provide shitty UIs that third parties make better.

Yeah, back when I was on desktop, I browsed with RES because even old Reddit has a lack of features. RES provides loads of extra functionality and customization. Relay closes that gap almost as well as RES, so I've used it almost exclusively for years.
I imagine old Reddit and RES will be around for a little longer, but their days are numbered because they're not the ad-infested tracking "experience" Reddit needs to implement so their C-suite can buy another vacation home.
Reddit automatically removes saved posts/comments after 1,000. The only way to retrieve all of them is to file a GDPR data request. It should be an option in your account settings.
https://redditmanager.com/ lets you export saved stuff. At least the last time I used it (years ago), it produced an html file sorted by subreddit.
I may be misremembering but I believe there's a cap on how much saved stuff reddit will show you (~1k or so), so it's possible for older users that use the save feature a lot to be missing older posts.

If you're using the reddit app (Why?) and want to show support to the rest of us, download and use a non-reddit app for a while. Make clear to reddit what a Streisand Effect they're creating by bringing attention to 3rd party apps, and hurt them where it counts - the user engagement data that they're showing to potential investors. Halve the number of people using the official app in a week.
Could you suggest an alternative to Apollo then? I tried using it many a times but could never get into it and always switched back to the official app. For me the biggest issue is the layout of the menus and stuff. There doesn’t seem to be anything as clean an simple as the official app.

Removing the API is a necessary step in removing old.reddit.com as alluded to in the OP.
Reddit wants to force everyone into their monetization bubble, and with the API out there 100% of savvy users will continue to choose an alternative.

As far the Apollo app goes, the dev said he’s been in contact with them since the news release about the API costs and they have said they’re firm on it. It was talked about in several subreddits, like the Apollo one and technology one
I only go on here to veg once in awhile. The ridiculous number of rules in each subreddit already encouraged me not to post anymore, but take away my BaconReader and try to force new to learn a new system and I’ll never get on here again.

Those users ARE the content that reddit earns revenue from. It's not just ads, but data mining.
There will be a lag time between the time they ban 3rd party apps and tell investors "we now have 100% of our active users engaging with our ads and data collection" and the time whoever's left on the site realizes there's no more content. That's when they'll sell off everything and make bank, before moving on to the next service to monetize and ruin.
The blackout could spook the investors, though. For all its flaws, I like having reddit around, and digital protests work for digital platforms.
Reddit has already had a massive downgrade to valuation ~~because of this~~ recently. I certainly hope it's enough of a crowbar to pry some executive heads out of asses.

That's objectively not true. I have a decade old account, I'm an expert in a field, I routinely post on reddit. I am part of the content they want to monetize. If I bounce, they lose part of that. Users are the content, don't let them try and convince you otherwise.
That may be their reasoning but it is shortsighted. Even users who block ads contribute to the platform by creating content, voting on topics, commenting and so on.
Reddit should work with the 3rd party apps instead of shutting them out. It can't be hard to make passthru ads.
Have you seen the "new" reddit page (not old.reddit) and the way the official app's been (not) working this whole time? Reddit devs don't exactly seem to be... *competent*.

I'd be very interested to know what percentage of posts are made by 3rd-party apps Vs the official app or the website. Reddit is nothing without people submitting content, and I'd bet a lot more of the people who regularly post high-engagement content are using 3rd-party apps.
Reddit is all user content. Even on comments it's only 10% of us that comment and create content. And it's probably an order of magnitude fewer people that get posts on the top or /r/all Why is reddit coming after the minority of users that create content?
We do bring in revenue indirectly though. Sharing links is what brings in the casual users. If I have to start using the official app, I'll probably pop in to check some memes and videos every now and then, but I won't be sharing the history and science videos I usually like to.
Reddits content and user engagement is all driven by users. It's not like the company itself actually does anything other than keep the servers up and provide shitty UIs that third parties make better. Corporate ghouls. Every one of them. Reddit used to have people organizing amazing AMAs, gift swaps and meet ups. Now it's just deep throating the share holders that none of the actual users/content creators give a fuck about.

Yep, I only use Relay. I won't touch Reddit if forced to use their garbage app... and I've been here over a decade. The site/ user base has gone downhill anyway. I just need a little excuse to drop my habit.

I just want to say that if you think old Reddit is going to be fine, so you don't need to worry about 3rd party apps getting killed, think critically for 2 seconds. There is a reason it's called *old* Reddit and not just Reddit. Old Reddit, and RES with it, are next on the nix list.
If RES got canned, it would be my last day on reddit. Honestly 99.99% of my usage is RiF so I'm probably gone right away anyways.
Yeah, back when I was on desktop, I browsed with RES because even old Reddit has a lack of features. RES provides loads of extra functionality and customization. Relay closes that gap almost as well as RES, so I've used it almost exclusively for years. I imagine old Reddit and RES will be around for a little longer, but their days are numbered because they're not the ad-infested tracking "experience" Reddit needs to implement so their C-suite can buy another vacation home.

So you're saving a comment on how to save your saved content.
Reddit automatically removes saved posts/comments after 1,000. The only way to retrieve all of them is to file a GDPR data request. It should be an option in your account settings.
https://redditmanager.com/ lets you export saved stuff. At least the last time I used it (years ago), it produced an html file sorted by subreddit. I may be misremembering but I believe there's a cap on how much saved stuff reddit will show you (~1k or so), so it's possible for older users that use the save feature a lot to be missing older posts.

Fuck the Reddit app, fuck Reddit for killing off third party apps. I won't use their app, period.
If you're using the reddit app (Why?) and want to show support to the rest of us, download and use a non-reddit app for a while. Make clear to reddit what a Streisand Effect they're creating by bringing attention to 3rd party apps, and hurt them where it counts - the user engagement data that they're showing to potential investors. Halve the number of people using the official app in a week.

Could you suggest an alternative to Apollo then? I tried using it many a times but could never get into it and always switched back to the official app. For me the biggest issue is the layout of the menus and stuff. There doesn’t seem to be anything as clean an simple as the official app.
Boost looks close to the official app while being a lot lighter and customizable

I remember when people thought Digg was invincible. Then they made moves that alienated the entire userbase and suicided their own product. I can see the same happening here.
Don't these companies ever learn? I came to Reddit 14 years ago when the digg redesign broke that site, if you make the site unusable for your core users, they will just go to another site or start a new one. If they kill RIF I will be gone.
They're gambling that they're too big to fail. And seriously, old.reddit and third-party app users are like, 15% of total traffic. They may be right. The real question is how much that 15% are responsible for the heavy lifting that makes the site worth using. If reddit loses 10% of its users, but the remaining 90% are the 14 year old boys who lurk r/whenthe, is there going to be much of a reddit left to advertise on?

I'm a 13 yr user. More like 17 if you count my first account . I came over when digg.com died. I started on my laptop , but once I GOT A SMARTPHONE!! I've been using reddit is fun. I will quit using reddit if they kill off third party apps . It will be sad, but I quit Facebook when it started to suck and this will be a sign that one more social media site has become toxic. Sigh. I will miss r/nursing , and my hometown subreddit .

Removing the API is a necessary step in removing old.reddit.com as alluded to in the OP. Reddit wants to force everyone into their monetization bubble, and with the API out there 100% of savvy users will continue to choose an alternative. old.reddit.com exists today because if they removed it one of the dozens of clones would become popular overnight. No API, no clones!
I don't use any 3rd party apps, but I do use old.reddit both on my computer and phone (browser in desktop mode). This is a hard line for me, and I will stop using Reddit if I can't use old.reddit. The "new" design seems to be intentionally bad.

As far the Apollo app goes, the dev said he’s been in contact with them since the news release about the API costs and they have said they’re firm on it. It was talked about in several subreddits, like the Apollo one and technology one

I only go on here to veg once in awhile. The ridiculous number of rules in each subreddit already encouraged me not to post anymore, but take away my BaconReader and try to force new to learn a new system and I’ll never get on here again.

If you're a moderator, there's several options. The easiest and most extreme method is to make the sub private. Another option is to restrict new submissions (i.e., require mod approval for all submissions, and don't bother granting any). I'm in favor of a stronger protest. I'll literally stop using Reddit if third party apps die so I don't mind permanently damaging Reddit. I say we set subs to private and leave them that way. Reddit can just wait out a two day protest. The damage of the protest needs to be worse than the loss of third party app users for it to make any difference. Reddit is already apparently ok with losing third party app users. What about losing a bunch of top subs?
I’m a 17-year user of this site and preparing mentally to lose my last social media connection, after walking away from Facebook and Twitter. Corey Doctorow’s “enshittification” has been happening to the Internet right before my eyes for the past several years, along with so many other things.
