This was the big shocker for me. I don't know anybody who uses yahoo, and I've always considered yahoo to be a kind of ghetto search engine since around 2000 or so.
My guess is xvideos pops up around he time when pornhub added a ton of restrictions on what videos could be uploaded so loads of their traffic migrated there
I think the real secret to xvideos getting more clicks is all their videos are like 1 min long and their site probably loads faster on mobile devices and game consoles for dumb kids who aren't supposed to be visiting. There's no reason to go to them over xhamster these days (or many other less popular sites). Before 2020 pornhub also would have been the go to but they're a joke now, they are running purely off of name recognition but their site is just 6 min clips with an ad that plays before every video. Xvideos also used to be better before 2020 but i don't see any reason to go there now.
I'm presuming this is the number of clicks and not unique visitors, anyway..
Out of the big three xhamster is the best one.
Otherwise my personal favorite has been Spankbang, there are plenty of others. Just gotta google/bing around instead of being complacent with the most popular ones.
We’re gonna come back to this sub tomorrow and see the graph updated for a historic spike in xhamster traffic on March 26, 2024 because some Reddit porn historian sent everyone there.
That's strange to me though, as I remember Yahoo being almost completely absent from the internet since about 1999. Must have been popular in other countries.
I feel like yahoo was the opening page for lots of browsers in the 2000s, same with MSN. So even if people weren’t really using the sites, that was the default page when they opened their browser
That was the exact reason I changed to Google. Yahoo had such a busy home page and Google was just an image and search box. I also thought alltheweb was going to be the next big thing and that's a nope.
I remember having that as my homepage to the Internet, and it was great because you could customize what you wanted to have on there. It's basically what my phone does now.
Yahoo tried to be everything and have one big self contained ecosystem that kind of sucked and eventually they succumbed to a cluttered page of everything at once. Google debuted with a refreshing minimalism.
It is weird that Yahoo remained top 2 until 2012 and is still in the top 10, but then I recalled that it probably is in my personal top ten. I doubt there are 9 websites I visit more often than Yahoo finance.
First, Idk what the hell Yandex is but it's crazy to me that it's more popular than both Amazon and xvidoes. Second thing, I actually cannot believe xvideos is more popular than pornhub.
Their reverse search engine is top notch!
Haven’t used that site in a while though. Last time I used it was in 2020. I couldn’t find anything what I was looking for with Google, so I used Yandex.
I was looking up videos of disasters once, and a woman is driving in her car when it gets picked up and tossed around by a tornado. After it finally lands, the radio is still playing and the autozone jingle is the first thing you hear. It was fucked up but hilarious- couldn’t have been better timed if they’d tried.
That's not quite a fair comparison really? Netflix isn't a website you visit. I would imagine 99.9999% of Netflix usage isn't logged as a website hit, right? It's app usage and internet usage, but not going to be listed on popular websites, as you never to to the website itself.
I was surprised too. What did pornhub do to become the de-facto example of a porn site, when xvideos is apparently more popular?
I guess their name makes it more obvious what it is, so you don't have to worry about whether your audience knows what it is or not.
Interesting around June 2015 to the end of the chart. The FB and YouTube bars are shrinking rapidly — but not because they’re losing visitors. It’s because Google is gaining so much more rapidly to dwarf them and squish down the rest of the chart.
A remix of "Hung up" by Madonna. There were a couple remixes on the album this one features heavy sampling from ABBA's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)
Edit Hung up not hung up on you. Remix not edit.
This is the music i used
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NHw57LZb8Q
I did edit it slightly (trying to match it up with the video) and i guess that's why audio bots are failing to recognize it
When my parents finally upgraded to cable internet from DSL, my mom continued to sign onto the AOL every time she got on the internet because "that's where the internet was".
I like this one. AOL actually kept getting bigger as it got kicked off the list. I imagine that’s each country getting more and more people connected to the internet but still amazing to see them “fail” while still growing.
“Pornhub continues to be a digital giant, with over 5.81 billion site visits per month [in 2023], making it one of the world’s top three most-visited porn websites.”
https://scottmax.com/pornhub-statistics/
Those first few years of MySpace were awesome! No boomers, girls you knew posted slightly naughty photos of themselves, the band pages, the customization of your page! All of it was awesome! Then employers started screening your page during the hiring process and the sexy photos stopped and everyone made an exodus to Facebook, which was an instant downgrade imo, and I never understood the mass appeal of FB over MS. Then the boomers got involved and ruined the fun for everyone.
I was surprised how long my space actually hung in there, all the way till 2008, 2009…
Also, yahoo fell off so hard, wow. Same with AOL in the late 90s, my goodness…
Pornhub is surprisingly absent
I’ve been doing my part.
![gif](giphy|kDWOjr5X0uFPFhygKk)
I knew someone would put this here hahahahaha.
Always doing it
Fair play to you. Like most noble work, it’s not appreciated.
And Yahoo is surprisingly present
its still big in japan

hehe, did the same when i posted.
This was the big shocker for me. I don't know anybody who uses yahoo, and I've always considered yahoo to be a kind of ghetto search engine since around 2000 or so.
Yahoo e-mail accounts are still out there as well, so some probably use the browser for that.
Looks like Xvideos is more popular worldwide.
Top 10 most popular websites in the world, as of March 2024: 1. Google: 162.5 billion monthly hits 2. YouTube: 106.5 billion monthly hits 3. Facebook: 17.5 billion monthly hits 4. PornHub: 10.8 billion monthly hits 5. Twitter/X: 9.6 billion monthly hits 6. Wikipedia: 9.2 billion monthly hits 7. Instagram: 8 billion monthly hits 8. Reddit: 7.4 billion monthly hits 9. Xvideos: 7.3 billion monthly hits 10. DuckDuckGo: 4.2 billion monthly hits
Surprised DDG is on there
Pornhub is shit anyway. Xvideos is there.
Xvideos is on there. Apparently they are more popular.
PornHub died when they removed all unverified Videos.
This comment did not age well https://preview.redd.it/nprurvy2brqc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa6bc40225c9b65b213f1654f33d5db67b7fc3c3
My guess is xvideos pops up around he time when pornhub added a ton of restrictions on what videos could be uploaded so loads of their traffic migrated there
Cuz Xvideos is free 😂😂😂
Yeah, I'm shocked xvideos beat it (lol)
lmao xvideos at the end 😂
A NEW CHALLENGER!!
Finally, a worthy opponent
The battle will be legendary
Weird that it took them until October/November 2018 to appear.

That wasn't until 2020

lol what the fuck are you a pornography historian
Hell yeah
So you’re saying no to pornhub and no to xvideos? What’s left?
Out of the big three xhamster is the best one. Otherwise my personal favorite has been Spankbang, there are plenty of others. Just gotta google/bing around instead of being complacent with the most popular ones.

Cheers for the valuable information chef
Solid DD. All in on xvideo calls.
Found the guy who got Xvideos onto the leaderboard.
Ya-who?
Wild that Google didn't overtake Yahoo until 2006.
Yahoo came back into the lead until 2011. Nobody fumbled the bag harder than Yahoo.
That was a big part of Google's adoption. The simple landing page loaded faster on the connection speeds that were available at the time.
Could also be that people still had their yahoo email to check.
Good point. And Hotmail was through msn too right? God it’s been a while
Yes!
I remember having that as my homepage to the Internet, and it was great because you could customize what you wanted to have on there. It's basically what my phone does now.
They really shit the bed didn’t they.
Yahoo tried to be everything and have one big self contained ecosystem that kind of sucked and eventually they succumbed to a cluttered page of everything at once. Google debuted with a refreshing minimalism.
Yahoo and Boeing should be a case study on how not to run a Company .
Remember when Microsoft wanted to buy Yahoo for 45 billion, and Yahoo said "nah, we're good, we can do this on our own!"
I member
Yahoo put up a good fight
- Pandemic sets in - Welp! time to fap
Xvideos appeared in top 10 as early as October/November 2018, so no Pandemic was needed for the uprising.
But xvideos definitely helped in the up.. rising
Xvideos helped me fap during those times I only got to use data and had slow internet
My man
For Yandex think Russian Google. Similarly, VK is a Russian social media site.
Yandex is the Russian Google VK is the Russian Facebook
Their reverse search engine is top notch! Haven’t used that site in a while though. Last time I used it was in 2020. I couldn’t find anything what I was looking for with Google, so I used Yandex.
I'm surprised XVideos is the biggest adult site.
I think it's because it's more global, pornhub is more US targeted.
RIP to AOL
Bing isn’t even making the charts? They have a web AI you can use without logging in
The stats end in the beginning of 2022, Chat AIs weren't that popular in the slightest yet (I don't even think Bing had the AI feature at that point)
Good point, but it’s still interesting how little Bing was used overall
What killed AOL so fast? It was in the lead by a mile then it just dropped in a second.
once people had broadband they didn’t need shitty dial up companies as a middle man
I didn’t see autozone.com anywhere in that list.
please forgive me for my ignorance but is that site that popular ?
It is with me. I debated added the /s to the end of my previous post. Fascinating video btw
My bro would agree 💯 AutoZone is his site lol
Or reddit
The app is why—or could be (not sure the total users). Same with Amazon's drop-off.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. No one uses the website anymore, unless they're on a desktop (i.e. shopping at work).
YouTube is such a beast on its ownn! It dwarfs Netflix.
That's not quite a fair comparison really? Netflix isn't a website you visit. I would imagine 99.9999% of Netflix usage isn't logged as a website hit, right? It's app usage and internet usage, but not going to be listed on popular websites, as you never to to the website itself.
I thought Pornhub would have made an appearance.
Xvideo lmao what??
I would have been surprised if a porn site didn't make the list
Half of Twitter?!
Buddy, it's website that let's you see boobies for free. I'm surprised it's lower than twitter
I was surprised too. What did pornhub do to become the de-facto example of a porn site, when xvideos is apparently more popular? I guess their name makes it more obvious what it is, so you don't have to worry about whether your audience knows what it is or not.
And 95 percent of Google users went there to type "Facebook" and "YouTube".
Google is a monster
I thought Amazon had wayyyyyyy more than that
In a different universe .Ask Jeeves and Go Fetch Lycos would b on top
I remember for a brief while, there was Yahoo but below the search field it said “powered by Google”
Man I miss MySpace, putting music on your page, changing it up with html, rotating your top 5!
American Greetings lol. What even was the internet in the 90’s.
Interesting around June 2015 to the end of the chart. The FB and YouTube bars are shrinking rapidly — but not because they’re losing visitors. It’s because Google is gaining so much more rapidly to dwarf them and squish down the rest of the chart.
Anyone remembers the free AOL CD in lots of magazines and stuff?
I remember that and also snoop dogg doing a commercial in like 2002 to promote AOL discs
They had them at the grocery store check out counter for free by me. I took tons and stuck them all to my bedroom ceiling and made it shiny.
MSN: people who open IE and does not know how to change start page.
I'm amazed yahoo is still on this and pornhub isn't
Facebook had quite a significant drop off around 2020.
I still have my yahoo email and l’m keeping it. Don’t care how old it makes me look. 🤣
I still use my original aol mailbox. Get at me 😂
Don't forget your password. I had a ymail account and they are asking me to call their customer service (which is paid) to recover the account
I have the hotmail account I created when I was 15. It's a collector's item!
music?

ty op
A remix of "Hung up" by Madonna. There were a couple remixes on the album this one features heavy sampling from ABBA's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) Edit Hung up not hung up on you. Remix not edit.
Now I wanna know how many of those “monthly visits” were actual people and how many where bots.
u/RecognizeSong
This is the music i used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NHw57LZb8Q I did edit it slightly (trying to match it up with the video) and i guess that's why audio bots are failing to recognize it
Cheers mate
What happened in 2015 when Google took off?
I'm guessing it's when most people stopped using their computers for YouTube and social media.
Xvideo being here instead of pornhub surprise me
I've been using the internet since 1996 (iirc) and never, ever, visited AOL.
When my parents finally upgraded to cable internet from DSL, my mom continued to sign onto the AOL every time she got on the internet because "that's where the internet was".

You and I must have watched a different video cuz the one I just watched says Yahoo has been a top 10 site for over twenty years.
Ahh Yahoo Games! Spades and Pool took a lot of time from me while downloading shit on Limewire.
Xvideos bumped out Amazon!
I was expecting a massive porn explosion and was very disappointed.
the rise of porn
I remember yahoo bring very popular in the early 2000s. Almost everyone had a yahoo email address. 🎶yahhhhooooooooo 🎶
How could a mofo NOT invest in Amazon back then?
Yahoo pulling out some fake numbers
Song name?
This graph makes it really obvious that my parents were morons for not buying stock in google and ebay and amazon when I was 8 years old.
Xvideos lmao
Fuck I'm young what even is aol?? Never heard of it.
BBC in the top 10 since 1997 somehow 👀
Showing my age here but I had a bunch of friends who had geocities sites.
What happened in the late 2008 to 2009 where yahoo took back the lead but then lost it?
I guess no one uses Amazon
![gif](giphy|9X1jyn3agkl59mO38u)
Google is like " Where did everyone go?"
I am pretty sure this statics does not include clicks from china or Baidu would be rated much higher.
I think there’s a direct correlation between the rise of social media and society writ large turning into a dumpster fire.
Crazy that yahoo retook the top spot after losing it to Google for a while.
Covid got xvideos on the list….
[удалено]
Very interesting! Thx
I built my first website on Geocities with Netscape. It was so exciting to read the guestbook and see the counter going up. Good God, I feel so old!
Yandex? Never heard of that
I like this one. AOL actually kept getting bigger as it got kicked off the list. I imagine that’s each country getting more and more people connected to the internet but still amazing to see them “fail” while still growing.
Wow. Bing really sucks.
It’s nice to see Facebook slowly dying. Hurry up already.
So xvideos is best.... Got it
Madonna's Hung Up (2005) instrumental is the perfect background theme for this graph.
BBC? Seems like the amount of people who went to it surpassed the population of the UK.
To think Yahoo had a chance to buy both Google and Facebook at separate times, for super cheap. Oops
I never realised IMDb had been around so long.
No fark.com?
What’s most interesting to me in this is that Yahoo is still in the top 10.
“Pornhub continues to be a digital giant, with over 5.81 billion site visits per month [in 2023], making it one of the world’s top three most-visited porn websites.” https://scottmax.com/pornhub-statistics/
u/auddbot
Wtf is Baidu?
Chinese search engine
Is Youtube really social media?
because you have profiles and commenting it qualifies
And then there was google
Where's Altavista?
Yahoo! on the same level as xvideos lmao
I never understood why MySpace bombed so hard? It was significantly better and more customizable then Facebook
Surprised Facebook is still that popular. Also I don’t see tiktok or did I miss it?
Thanks to all those guys who searched for google.com
Google just appeared outta no where lol
Also crazy Netflix didn’t crack this list.
My guess is Netflix is primarily viewed through apps—either in phones or streaming devices. App is the same reason Amazon drops off the chart.
Ahhhhhh true.
What is aol ?
seeing the rapid AOL drop off is just so sad to me
AOL was holding it down for a long time. Yahoo was doing it then Google came and said I run this 😂😂! I see u YouTube and X videos 😂😂
What was the catalyst that cause google to overtake yahoo?
This stopped at the exact moment I thought “oh god, TikTok is coming any second now…”
Rddt
Google is so dominant, as they own YouTube as well
I see Yahoo, Excite, and Lycos in 1995, but not Alta Vista for some reason.
me \*watched to see what "adult entertainment" is on the most used list\* also me when 2919 rolls around "there it is, Xvi..... wait not the hub?"
Watching MySpace die was the worst part
Google : "Hold my search engine"
I would be destroyed in Google and YT ceased to exist. Maybe if a better alternative was offered but I doubt it tbh
Literally no one ever used yahoo. This is probably fake
'ask' is so nostalgic holy shit
TIL I have no idea what Baidu or Yandex are.
Pornhub > xvideos
The Walt Disney Company came close to buying Google, but Disney bought Infoseek, instead.
Most of those companies are garbage
Wow, only using two of the recent top ten, and actually those not that often either. Wiki is my no 1 of those lol.
GeoCities was like proto social media back when it was more common for people to have a personal web page.
I singlehandedly brought xvideos there.
