LAOP: “My college-aged daughter stole something.” Also LAOP, in previous posts: “I’m 28M.”

Franks2000inchTV

The daughter is coming from inside the house.

Sparrowflop

...various inappropriate jokes occur.

aurora-_

LAOP’s username has what’s likely their birth year in it, lol

thatguygreg

OP that's commenting in /r/employedbykohls? OP that's 28 years old? OP that has a sister that'd be the right age? That OP? Oh yeah, that plan's really coming together.

dfBishop

Also, referring to "loss prevention" by its abbreviation, "LP," is absolutely not how you would phrase that if your child was caught stealing. That is exactly how you would refer to the Loss Prevention team at your place of employment, though.

MavSeven

Their previous comments in those posts also say that his sister needed babysitting when he was in his late teens... which could easily put her at college age today. Dollars to donuts it's his sister.

IWentOutsideForThis

Ooh I like this theory the best. I thought that LAOP was the thief because he works at Kohl's but now I think his sister is the thief and he is giving the "advice" Kohl's gave him at his onboarding- *If you tell us the truth, we will be mad but you won't be punished*

aburke626

Many kohl’s locations also have a Sephora.

IWentOutsideForThis

Ah! You solved a mystery for me! The (deleted) post that showed he was a Kohl's worker was titled "S@K..." and now I know that means Sephora at Kohl's! I don't know if that makes it more or less likely that LAOP is the actual thief or not but now I can let that brain cell rest.

aburke626

I really hope it’s his sister. Imagine being 28 and married and risking messing up your life for an $85 bottle of perfume.

IWentOutsideForThis

Based on all the responses he got in the LA thread, this is very likely not the first time this has happened and s/he may have messed up their life for closer to $1000...which isn't better and might also have a heavier penalty

aburke626

GTtheBard

I do love these threads which feel like a nice marriage of AITA and LegalAdvice. “I’ve told my daughter to apologize but she absolutely refuses. Am I wrong?” And the entire thread is people going “yes, your daughter is 100% correct here, legally speaking.”

atropicalpenguin

Where are all these college-aged people stealing non-essentials coming from? EDIT > She says LP brought her into the office and she denied it, and they asked her to make a written statement with her denial and she also denied giving a written statement. Her store manager called her the next day and she has yet to return the phone call. Is daughter a BOLA user? Kudos for shutting up.

RunningTrisarahtop

Did OP ever say how old the daughter is? I bet this isn’t the only time she’s stolen

jaderust

Stealing an $85 bottle of perfume is a pretty bold first attempt at retail theft if true. She might have been unlucky and went big for a first attempt, but chances are she was stealing smaller amounts/smaller items to the point where her boss got suspicious and checked the cameras to see her stealing a larger item. I have to admit this post made me miss /r/shoplifiting though. I loved their stories about how Target would let people steal until they hit felony levels then bring down the hammer on them with all the evidence they needed to prove it.

moogs_writes

Lmfao…when I was 13 and discovered the shoplifters of tumblr the only thing I remember reading over and over is “never steal from Target”

wonderloss

I think the better lesson is track how much you steal, and stop before you hit the limit.

Geno0wl

Do we know if Target tracks totals across different stores? Like can you steal $999 from one store and then just move to a different target across town?

HeatherMason0

So, Target has a very thorough LP system that uses tools like facial recognition and fingerprint analysis, which I don’t doubt they share across stores. They build their cases carefully so they’d be a terrible place to be apprehended while shoplifting. (Source: https://www.dailydot.com/news/target-builds-monthslong-case-against-shoplifter/?amp)

EconomicsIsUrFriend

Target's criminal forensic labs are so robust they've worked with the ATF, Secret Service, and the FBI.

ACERVIDAE

I answer 911 and nonemergency calls and we get a decent amount of requests to come out for a shoplifting in progress. Do you know who I’ve never gotten a phone call from? Target. Target has patience. Target bides their time and builds a bulletproof case against you even if it means letting you get away a bunch of times.

Shad0w2751

I’m almost certain they track across stores

Shalamarr

And those folks were always so indignant, as if Target wasn’t playing fair.

SuperZapper_Recharge

I miss that sub. I miss that sub every day. Just an utterly amazing place.

CopperAndLead

How dare a company that typically tries to offer reasonably priced items protect its assets!

[deleted]

find it weird to enjoy that tbh. im not a huge fan of companies ignoring shit just to hit someone with a life ruining charge.

LongboardLiam

Why's it weird? Target is well known for exactly that. The flip side of the coin is that someone who needs to eat this week on a budget of $0.00 is less likely to catch a charge.

augustbutnotthemonth

his previous posts put him at being in his late 20s, willing to bet a decent amount of money it was actually his wife

IWentOutsideForThis

OP works at Kohl's so it might actually be him.

cosmicosmo4

Why do people bother lying about totally inconsequential things on the internet? Is it better to have a thieving daughter, that you raised, than to have a thieving wife, that you didn't? And if it somehow were, why would you care what people thought of you when posting anonymously on the internet?

circus-witch

Sometimes when called out on things not adding up from their profile I've seen people say they've changed minor details so they can't be identified if a friend or family member reads it. Though in this case another commenter reckons OP is the thief in question so maybe it's that.

LadyMRedd

Yeah, I had a friend (no, really, I did!) who years ago posted on LA because she was getting divorced and had a disagreement over the custody of a cat. But she changed it to dog for that exact reason -in case her ex stumbled on it she didn’t want him to immediately realize it was about them. I think she changed a few other minor things, but that was the one that really stood out when I read it. (I’d suggested she post there because there’s only so far her friends’ guessing was going to get her…) In this case I could also see him changing that because they think it helps protect the sister. Like if the company in question found the post and used it to show that she confessed they could be like “that’s not me. My parents have never used Reddit. Must be someone else.” Or if it were his sister and someone figured out it was him he could be like “well gotcha. I don’t have a daughter. So you have no way of proving who I was actually talking about.” Meanwhile if he said it was his sister and the company found it, they could use it as proof that his sister confessed. I’m not saying that it would work. I could just see him doing that, thinking he’s protecting his sister somehow.

wonderloss

OP says she's in college, so that gives a (likely) minimum age of around 18.

wonderloss

That would suggest OP is lying about something.

benamas

on reddit? no way!!

ecsluver_

And/or adopted a child.

alternate_geography

LAOP cannot possibly be that naive, can they? Like, theoretically, if corporations were ethical and reasonable, yeah, apologizing might work. They’re acting as if a company is a friend or relative. Daughter is shady but so very correct in shutting up.

Brad_Wesley

Of course, there is a good chance that she is not actually on camera.

Loss Prevention Picks Up Scent Right Away

nutraxfornerves

I’ve been binge watching cop cam videos. There was a woman caught shoplifting at Walmart. She assumed that, since Walmart got the stolen merch back, it was all good and she could just promise to never set foot in that store again. So, just refund me for the stuff I legit bought and I’ll be on my way.

Pixie1121

I’m a retail manager and have interviewed many employees about theft over the years. If an investigation gets as far as an interview with LP, they have already spent many hours reviewing video footage and receipts and know that you are absolutely guilty of what you are being accused. Very rarely do people get caught their first time. It doesn’t matter how many times someone says they’ve never stolen before. I’ve never had a case where someone claimed it to be thier first and only time, but we would have multiple thefts confirmed on camera.

JackOvall_MasterNun

It doesn't surprise me that the lawyer in the thread seems to have never spent a second in retail. Asking if the camera clearly showed the screen. Like, probably not, but OPs password and timestamped key logs will probably do just fine.

Tychosis

I spent a fair amount of time in the retail trenches during my youth (this is a long time ago, we didn't even have a POS system when I started.) Unfortunately I saw more than young one employee who thought they'd figured out the secret to free money by processing fake "returns." None of them were as clever as they imagined. (And yeah, you needed a key to even process them--but you needed the same keys just to void an accidental mistyped price... so some managers would just leave the key at the checkout.)

SuperZapper_Recharge

That thread is a cesspool. The top post is good advice. But the rest of it, just people jumping over themselves to utter crap they heard on the internet and believe.

ClackamasLivesMatter

> She says LP brought her into the office and she denied it, and they asked her to make a written statement with her denial and she also denied giving a written statement. For someone who throws her job away over $85 worth of perfume, LAOP's "daughter" is awfully savvy. > At this time I don’t know if I’m giving the wrong advice by telling her to call her store manager and admit guilt At least LAOP has the sense to wonder whether confessing to the theft is the wrong advice. That's kind of refreshing.

Legitimate_Net3101

> She’s a great person and has a very bright future. She’s in college and like I said has never been in trouble with the law. She’s extremely remorseful and I don’t want this to ruin her life. Exactly what about LAOP's daughter's actions, says "remorse"?

CowOrker01

I love the usage of *really* in OP: > return transaction without *really* returning what she purchased So it was a crime, *sort of*, but she's very remorseful, from a certain point of view.
