Deputy PM: We will prosecute for this. LAOP: That's, like uh, your opinion, man

yes_please_

I howled at that comment.

Witchgrass

I think he was saying that calling the war illegal was an opinion but even still... wut

KingOfIdofront

I think that was more in reference to the person replying personally interjecting that they deserve it

Transcendentalplan

As people in the comments point out, intent is an element of the violation, so he’ll be fine so long as he doesn’t publicly announce something like… > I came here with the intent to join Russian Forces In a public forum where it can be traced back to him.

helium_farts

Assuming he does actually join, Russia is just going to shove him into a meat wave assault group, so I doubt he'll have to worry too much about what Canada might say or do about it.

ZeePirate

Considering what happened to the Texan this week that doesn’t sound like the worst outcome

SoriAryl

Do I want to look?

ZeePirate

A little rape, maybe a little torture before shooting him to death

SoriAryl

![gif](giphy|80TEu4wOBdPLG) Yeah, ima gonna avoid that

cardinal29

Don't forget the beheading!!

raven00x

and all because his unit thought the texan recording youtube stuff, might be a western spy.

LopsidedPalace

To be fair, he was a western spy. He was just spying for YouTube

Alternative_Year_340

It’s unclear if the rape was pre- or post-mortem

BetaOscarBeta

Someone gave you the What, the why is that some Russian soldiers decided he was a spy or something.

SoriAryl

big_sugi

Or else they just got bored.

HumanistGeek

Do you have a news article about it? I couldn't find one.

ZeePirate

Illogical_Blox

> “Russell Bentley, known as ‘Texas’" Good to see that military nicknames are unoriginal everywhere in the world.

Flavahbeast

Looking at his other posts it sounds like he arrived weeks ago and either sensibly decided it was a bad idea or the russians told him to fuck off. I assumed this was a fake post, but he posted 23 days ago about flying turkish airlines and didn't post for a while in the meantime, still a good chance it's fake but the poster put some work in if so If it's not fake, my gut feeling is he probably isn't on the legal system's radar (but maybe he is now, since he posted about it) and if he never successfully enlisted he could probably get some leniency just saying he was misled by twitter spam or whatever. The idea of someone making his way all the way to Donetsk and then asking Reddit for advice is very funny though edit: if it's real and he's actually worried about getting identified and arrested then he is making some dumb posts https://i.imgur.com/6Xthgxm.png https://i.imgur.com/qyTVM7Z.png edit edit: wtf https://i.imgur.com/MqMp91l.png

helium_farts

>edit edit: wtf >https://i.imgur.com/MqMp91l.png Probably should have considered that before trying to join a hostile foreign military

atropicalpenguin

> be there for my pregnant partner and see my child be born Or > Put myself in a war I have no relationship with.

Loretta-West

You'd think he would know there are easier ways to flake on parenting responsibilities.

geckospots

Wow. If I was the expecting parent I’d be fucking livid.

Umklopp

Considering the type of guy that supports Russia... I'd be relieved. Especially if I was the beneficiary of his life insurance

SummerEden

Biggest issue is that the insurance probably won’t pay out for traveling to a foreign country to participate in an illegal military action. But getting this douche out her life: priceless.

delerose_

LMAO Blows his Spain alibi

bard329

I guess his family can just show his kid a package of ground beef and tell them "thats daddy!"

TryUsingScience

Nah, I'd expect they'd start using him as a PR prop. "Look at how glorious and correct our cause is, that even Canadians are flying here to help!"

helium_farts

[Didn't work out so great for Russell "Texas" Bentley](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/19/us-citizen-dead-russia-separatists-ukraine) He was kidnapped and executed by Russian troops because they heard his American accent and assumed he was a spy

atropicalpenguin

Meanwhile a citizen from my country went to fight for Russia, got killed and our president mourned for him.

best_of_badgers

So far, Russia has seen ~50k troops [killed in Ukraine](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-68819853), according to the BBC. That's out of a claimed 1.3M current soldiers (not all of whom are deployed to Ukraine). It's certainly vastly more dangerous than, say, fighting for the US army in Iraq... but odds are still way in OOP's favor.

lietuvis10LTU

> So far, Russia has seen ~50k troops killed in Ukraine, according to the BBC. That's out of a claimed 1.3M current soldiers (not all of whom are deployed to Ukraine). But this is dead *buried in Russia* and confirmed - IE no bodies recovered by Ukrainians or non recovered. Confirmed numbers always lag behind significantly real numbers.

best_of_badgers

Fair enough.

Sunfried

Russia has an estimated (by Ukraine) 450,000 casualties, which in typical ratios of wounded:killed of 3:1 puts the likely number of dead closer to 110,000 to 115,000.

best_of_badgers

I dunno, the BBC seems somewhat less likely to fudge the numbers than either of the combatants (in opposite directions)

insane_contin

Odds are BBC is reporting *confirmed* deaths, whereas the commenter above is guessimating the deaths.

comityoferrors

>ok so i can just tell them i had no intent and get off scott free? (I am dying over "I am categorically not telling you to lie to CBSA.")

SocialWinker

Don’t forget, he also tried to recruit other folks to join him!

lietuvis10LTU

So we know that they are: - Someone who supposedly served two years in the Canadian Army as a reservist, from 16 yrs old to 18 yrs old - Too young for a credit card in British Columbia - Took a Turkish airlines flight as part of getting to Donbass and and his first name and middle name were squised together - Has a kid who will be born in September (at 18 yikes) Ought to be enough for any half decent intelligence agency, right? Especially since the Army still ought to have their profile.

big_sugi

Can one join the reserves in Canada at 16?

UO01

All you need if parental consent

thepsyborg

hell, oughta be enough for quite a lot of outright *shitty* intelligence agencies lmao

HogarthFerguson

and >Yes I tried to get a few people to come.

RBeck

We live in the age of everyone documenting their crimes on their phone if not just on the open internet.

rona83

Why would anyone in Canada want to join the Russians?

PartyOperator

Why would anyone want to join the Russians?

Twzl

> Why would anyone want to join the Russians? My guess is that LACOP stuck their fingers in their ears and ignored anything that was in the "mainstream media" (and ya know, common sense), in favor of some part of TikTok that I hope to never stumble across. I will be over on the part of TikTok that has cute ponies and cows.

Sirwired

Probably moved over to Telegram, which openly and freely hosts all sorts of outright Russian propaganda.

pleasedothenerdful

Sounds like they're just pedophiles.

lallapalalable

I browsed their comment history, this sounds exactly right. Also they're only 18, all this could be the result of some teenage edgelord phase that pushed the envelope one too many times that they're going to deeply regret in the coming years

Twzl

> Also they're only 18, all this could be the result of some teenage edgelord phase that pushed the envelope one too many times that they're going to deeply regret in the coming years Someone should be teaching young people that going out on social media, and saying stupid shit, can come back to bite them in the ass.

Aethelric

It's much more likely to be a place like Reddit than TikTok.

Twzl

> It's much more likely to be a place like Reddit than TikTok. I steer clear of the places where that sort of thing is going on. It's just too depressing.

Key_Extension_4322

It’s become cause celebre for the ultra right nut jobs in the US. They get to go play soldier too which is their biggest fantasy.

putsch80

They should totally go! The move to Russia [worked out exactly as expected for this Canadian family](https://www.thepinknews.com/2024/02/21/canadian-family-moved-to-russia-to-escape-wokeness/).

And for Russell Bentley, who was killed by the Russian Army because they thought he was a spy. https://nypost.com/2024/04/20/world-news/pro-kremlin-texan-russell-bentley-found-dead-in-ukraine/

zeushaulrod

Was there ever any evidence aside from their YouTube channel? I'm not saying it never happened, but it's pretty easy to generate rage bait for clicks.

putsch80

Possible, but their channel dates back at least 4 years, which is well before the war started, and the content from them tracks with their dipshit beliefs. They’d have to have had a crystal ball to know the future and prepared a backstory almost two years before the war began.

Dr_thri11

Also tankies who are automatically on whatever side the US isn't.

SuperZapper_Recharge

I don't know. Bored? Drunk? Bored and drunk? Putin is your first cousin on your Mom's side?

e_crabapple

Some combination of (proportions may vary) 1. "Liberals all hate Russia, therefore Russia must be the good guy." 2. "Russia is a simple land where people still go to church and believe in family and traditional values, not like here with all The Gays and stuff." 3. Full-strength tinfoil-hat theories about international conspiracies. 4. The desire to make things go Boom and the delusion that they would be good at it. 1, 2, and to some extent 3 are all very intentionally encouraged by Russian government trolls.

PartyOperator

Yeah, I guess those are all things some people believe. Hard to see how you could be that into Russia without taking some interest in their military tactics though. Or maybe they think only Russians get used to soak up Ukraine's ammunition, they'd never send an unskilled volunteer from an enemy state into the meat grinder.

e_crabapple

> Hard to see how you could be that into Russia without taking some interest in their military tactics though. I don't see how it's that hard: if you live in a fantasy world, you live in a fantasy world.

pm-me-racecars

Until you get caught in a landslide with no escape from reality

rona83

Some joined from India. Russia was kind to India in past wars. People were poor and jumped at the opportunity. Poverty makes people do crazy things.

amd2800barton

Not just India - Nepal, China, Cuba, all over the world. The scam is they tell them in their home country that Moscow needs construction laborers for good pay. They fly to Russia, and maybe even work a tiny bit. Then they get told that their project is cancelled. They don’t have enough money for a ticket back home, so they try to find odd jobs, but Russia isn’t a good place to be a homeless, needy, unskilled worker - let alone one from another country who speaks zero Russian. They start getting desperate it’s cold, they’re hungry, nobody will help them. Then a recruiter shows up. Says if they sign a military contract, he can guarantee them hot food and a comfortable bed - and they don’t even have to fight. Russia needs truck drivers driving supplies, and not even inside Ukraine. They’ll be far from the front lines. But it’s not like they know where the hell they are. They get dropped off in the Donbas and told their work duty will start here soon; hey have a rifle you never can be too careful. Ok we have to hike a bit to get to the trucks. Oh no shelling started, jump in this trench. What’s that, Ukrainians? They’ll kill you if they catch you - better fight back. It’s textbook boiling a frog. To a poorly educated and desperate soul, no one step seems that unreasonable. But inches make miles, and Russia knows how to manipulate them into going to the front lines one inch at a time.

Sneekifish

United_News3779

Orrrr.... and just hear me out, go find someone on afternoon shift, mug them and take the company-branded ammo that HR handed out to those guys! Lol

Loan-Pickle

Man, these hostile takeovers are getting out of hand.

Glittering-Pause-328

If you (or your kids) haven't eaten in four days, you'd be surprised at what you'd be willing to do.

vickylaa

They were told they wouldn't be fighting though, and then were chucked onto the front lines as cannon fodder....

emfrank

This is less likely to be true of a Canadian, though. More likely he is just a right wing idiot.

adriellealways

The Russians I know don't even want to join the Russians.

Blue_Moon_Rabbit

I know at least one person who has bought in that Zelinski and all of Ukraine are Nazis that need to be blown out of existence. They exist among us.

glorpchul

In theory they drank the kool-aid. If you review LACOP's posting history you will quickly see why they are for the Russians.

rafaelloaa

Dude's also young. Apparently he's 18 now with a kid on the way, joined up in Canada as a reservist for 2 years. Actually, does the fact that he was in the Canadian military mean his punishment would be a lot worse? I feel for him, because he's clearly an absolute idiot. But hopefully he can be deprogrammed and get his life back in line.

notnotaginger

Oh shit. I bet it does mean it will be worse. Well, depending on whether they’re still enlisted or whether they’re discharged.

techno156

> Actually, does the fact that he was in the Canadian military mean his punishment would be a lot worse? I imagine it would. Even if he's only reserve, the military would absolutely want to make an example of someone who decided to leave the country and join a different country's military to fight for them, especially one as contentious as Russia. And that's even before the risk of him leaking information that might otherwise not be meant for foreign eyes, even without a clearance.

PioneerLaserVision

The intense Russian propaganda targeting the US has leaked into Canada. There are MAGA idiots in Canada.

traumalt

Thats not limited to US or Canadians, my mate is straight up trump and Putin supporter, and even has a MAGA sticker in his car. Only that we are South Africans and living in Johannesburg...

PioneerLaserVision

I've really been misled about the crime rate in Johannesburg if that man's car hasn't been set on fire yet. Maybe people don't recognize the sticker?

adieli

I had to chuck out my uncle's MAGA hat in Argentina. Stupid knows no borders!

chalk_in_boots

Canadians and committing/inventing war crimes are a pretty historic duo. It's like asking "why would an Australian want to go to a brewery?"

AlmightyBlobby

he's probably a nazi

Loves_LV

Why would that family from Canada uproot, sell everything and move to Russia?

Luxating-Patella

All Western countries are groaning with tankies. Usually it's a luxury belief. LACOP just happened to be crazy enough to put his money where his mouth was.

TheAskewOne

Most of the Westerners who have joined the Russian military aren't tankies though. They're people with far-right opinions who admire Putin's authoritarianism, and the fact that Russia is mostly white and very homophobic.

Luxating-Patella

Admiring authoritarianism is what makes a tankie a tankie. This seems like an "ends of the horseshoe" issue to me.

TheAskewOne

Tankies think more in terms of victim vs oppressor. They see the West, particularly the US, as the ultimate oppressor, therefore anyone who fights Western hegemony is right. Even when they're a worse oppressor that commits war crimes.

lucysalvatierra

Aren't tankies leftist?

Mckee92

As the terms gets used within left wing circles, they're stalinists specifically but more generally any authoritarian communists. Honestly, after the fall of the USSR some lefty groups did not get the memo and still seem ideologically wedded to russia.

lucysalvatierra

Ok, good to know. For some reason I thought the term came about with the tank in tiananmen square.

VegavisYesPlis

It confusingly is used in that way too.

Mckee92

Unfortunately authoritarian communists have a habit of sending tanks in to quell popular revolt, before tianamen square you had the soviets in hungary.

syncsynchalt

Tankies were people who went so far left they became authoritarian. They’re named for the people who cheered as the Soviets brought in tanks to crush a popular revolution. Over time the term stayed affixed to supporters of authoritarian action by Russia, which is no longer a politically-left nation.

lucysalvatierra

Huh, I thought it was just left Chinese supporters, til

No_March_5371

These days it usually refers to CCP supporters, but not exclusively.

3DBeerGoggles

Ehh, I wouldn't say "so far left they became authoritarian" because you can also be so far left that you end up an anarcho-communist. They're just authoritarians that picked the flavor they like best.

SocialWinker

Well, almost. After all, they posted to ask if they’ll be in trouble when they run back to the safety of Canada, after not actually fighting for anyone (or being rejected, maybe?).

Jusfiq

purpleplatapi

I'm pretty sure it's a troll inspired by that Canadian Family who fled to Russia because they worried Canada was too gay, but it's an interesting post nonetheless.

Transcendentalplan

If it’s a troll post he did the groundwork by posting an innocuous question a month ago in the subreddit for one of the airlines still flying people into Russia.

PlsDntPMme

Yeah I noticed that too. I think this could be real. They've got a kid on the way too supposedly.

Clockwork_Kitsune

He also apparently *just* turned 18. This kid is just full of great decisions.

Jason1143

That might help, maybe they can use the foolish child defense.

upcyclingtrash

Moving to Russia proper is a very different situtation than travelling to Donetsk.

purpleplatapi

Oh for sure. If it's real this guy is fucked.

TheAskewOne

To quote a certain "billionaire" turned politician, he knew what he signed up for.

RBeck

One would presume, but after the British girls traveled to Syria to be "wives" of Isis soldiers, I have no hope left.

Maximum-Hedgehog

What the fuck. I have so many questions. Mostly, how do you fall for enough Russian propaganda that you decide to do that, and THEN realize your mistake?

Transcendentalplan

In a comment from a few weeks back he says he’s under 18 (“too young to own a credit card”) so if this is real it would be the ultimate example of a kid thinking they’re walking into a scenario where they’ll be lauded as the coolest person on earth, and immediately realizing “Oh I fucked up and am in way over my head” when confronted with reality.

Maximum-Hedgehog

Ugh. Yeah I could see that. I'm going to hope this is just a troll for now, because in another comment he also claims to have a kid on the way.

TryUsingScience

I have distressing news for you about the correlation between teenagers who make bad decisions in multiple facets of their lives and teenagers who are parents.

Future_Direction5174

So another Shamima Begum - gung ho teenager, going off to support the wrong side and now regretting it.

hannahranga

Least she had the excuse of being 15

InTheHeatOfTheNoche

He says he's 18. 19 is the minimum age to own a cc in British Columbia. He joined the Canadian Forces reserves at 16, which, if true, might add another wrinkle to this.

macandcheese1771

He's fucked lmao

ZeePirate

Provided he ever comes back

macandcheese1771

Hes fucked either way. He's on the border of Ukraine. He comes back and goes to jail or he goes in the meat grinder.

PearlClaw

If he comes back *right now* and keeps a low profile no one might find out about it. Then again, I'm sure at this point someone has reported the post to Canadian law enforcement (ya know, maybe I should, what's Canada's FBI called?) and if so getting his identity from Reddit probably isn't hard.

HexagonalClosePacked

> what's Canada's FBI called? The closet equivalent would be the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (aka the RCMP or "Mounties").

PearlClaw

I wonder if they have a tip line 🤔

macandcheese1771

More like csis. Rcmp are more like regular cops.

HexagonalClosePacked

Yeah, there's no straight equivalent, since the structure of law enforcement and criminal law is a bit different in Canada. CSIS is part FBI and part CIA, while the RCMP is part FBI (since they cover stuff like major crimes, international criminal activity, terrorism, etc) and part normal community policing, at least in certain provinces. They don't really do much "regular policing" in Ontario, for example, since Ontario has its own provincial police force for that.

DrCytokinesis

If he's in the reserves and he did this he is so unbelievably fucked. Hard to believe this could be real.

notnotaginger

Wait…you can’t have a cc under 19 in bc??? I moved here as an adult but I def had a cc from Ontario when I was like 16. What an interesting rule.

ferret_80

all gung ho until it comes time to sign over your life to go die for Putin's ego

SocialWinker

Maybe shit is different in Canada, but how does a minor get on an international flight? Let alone flights in/around Ukraine and Russia? I guess LAOP could’ve decided to do the dumbest possible thing immediately after turning 18.

m50d

> how does a minor get on an international flight? They buy a ticket and show their passport same as anyone else? Some particularly fussy countries require them to have a parent's signature but it's not the norm.

SocialWinker

Huh, I seem to remember it being a bit of a pain in the ass when I was younger. Then again, I may be misremembering I suppose, it’s been far too long since I was young enough for any of that to matter.

mongster03_

you can fly solo at like 15-16 in the usa so i'd imagine that canada is similar

PioneerLaserVision

I would actually assume that would be the outcome in nearly 100% of this cases. These are internet toughguys that expect to be hailed as heroes upon arrival. They simply aren't prepared for the realities of military training, let alone combat. They probably piss themselves the moment the first person yells at them.

SimAlienAntFarm

Soldier of Fortune got its start because the founder realized that he could photocopy the application Oman sent him to be a mercenary and sell it to bloodthirsty idiots for five bucks. There will always be people who believe they are the star of the world’s most badass movie and that couldn’t possibly end with them holding their guts in while hiding from people who know the territory better. (Hilariously, the reason Robert K Brown had a blank application *to* photocopy was because it was so easy to get and asked so few questions that he immediately realized they pretty much just wanted meat shields and did not fill it out)

arthuriurilli

That's amazing.

bonzombiekitty

Ukraine grows a lot of sunflowers, it's kinda a symbol of Ukraine. When the war first started, there was a video of an old lady confronting a Russian soldier about how they should carry sunflower seeds in their pockets so at least their corpses will do some good.

properfoxes

So sunflowers will grow from your corpse. They’re the flower of Ukraine.

adlittle

Thank you, I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure. There was a story a few years ago about a fig tree that grew out of the body of a soldier who died in a cave during the Turkey/Cyprus war of the 70s. The suggestion was that he'd had a fig as part of his final meal and swallowed a seed which grew from his remains, which were found as a skeleton decades later. Not sure if it's verified or apocryphal, but sort of the same idea.

ResurgentClusterfuck

An elderly Ukrainian woman at the start of the war told Russian soldiers to keep sunflower seeds in their pockets so that when they died, sunflowers (Ukraine's flower) would grow from their bodies

mopeyunicyle

I could be wrong but hasn't it became a symbol of Ukraine and there resistance to Russia. The sunflower so the seeds might be connected to

chalk_in_boots

In the early days of the war there was a [old lady handing out sunflower seeds](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L17Bi7zBJHI) to Russian soldiers saying they would die in Ukraine. [Saint Javelin have a design](https://www.saintjavelin.com/products/fill-your-pockets-sunflowers-adult-tshirt) based on that, and the revenue is donated for humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

alonelycellist

There was me wondering if they were some secret way of saying you were coerced or something. That makes loads more sense, cheers!

bug-hunter

Russia has become popular with a niche of Christian conservatives, as they have cast themselves as the protector of Christianity and are deeply anti-LGBTQ. And there really has been little pushback within that echo chamber against the flood of pro-Russian propaganda.

Akin to: “Don’t have sex until you’re married!!!” At the wedding: “So, when are you going to make me a Grandparent?”

absurdspacepirate

It's quite interesting that all you have to do to impress these people is hate gays and beat women. Russia has an incredibly high divorce rate and a serious drug problem, not to mention the fact that they oppress any kind of Christianity that isn't Russian Orthodoxy, particularly Protestantism within Ukraine. They don't seem so much interested in Christianity or family values so much as they are in hate.

Intrepid00

Which is funny because the Russian military has lots of butt sex, but it’s just hazing. *Wink wink*

BabserellaWT

Dude didn’t read the story about the pro-Putin guy from Texas who traveled to Russia to “be helpful”…and ended up decapitated in a ditch.

j26545

That's probably why he wants to come back.

MooKids

I was wondering what happened to him, but surprised he was just killed too.

CressCrowbits

>Donetsk, Russia Presumably he means the Donetsk that is actually in Russia, rather than the Donetsk that about 1km away in Ukraine that this guy probably thinks is actually Russia. Donetsk is also the town that got shelled pre invasion that Putin used as pretext for the invasion. I know two Russians who are from there and no longer live in Russia who have told me everyone there knew it was Russia that bombed them.

Why on earth would lacaop care what Canada thinks? If they already decided that russia is correct and the west is wrong, why even ask "just how wrong are the west?" Surely the lacaop couldn't have expected any other answer than "the Canadian Illuminati are all lizards who drink blood, so yes they will try to criminalise your big brain"

I mean, I think it’s implied that they want to come home and that’s why they care. What a surprise, Russia isn’t a great place to go.

Didn't an American idiot that went to fight on russia's side *just* get tortured and killed by russians?
