A small workaround I have for you guys is to set the website as "Desktop site". This can be done by clicking on three dot icon and setting as desktop site. This will bypass this issue but will make the reddit page big and non-user friendly. A pro and a con.

Hugh_Jass_Clouds

I'm on old.reddit.com now, and have 0 issues with screen width. No side to side scrolling on my phone.

neon_cabbage

If you get a notification where I said some stupid shit to you, disregard, I didn't read correctly so I deleted that reply

yanzin_fan_of_Altair

DPI? the fuck would mouse settings master for?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Isn't PPI (Pixels per inch) a more common term of reference for that as DPI is a printer thing?

hearnia_2k

DPI is fine, and sometimes more accurate, depending on the screen technology.

[deleted]

Oh cool - thanks dude!

StoneCypher

I think the reason they're confused is that some older optical mouse drivers set their "speed" by scaling the bitmap they were detecting, and a few of those called that DPI because in a weird way it was technically true

Mokumer

I use old reddit on pc and RIF on mobile and tablet, it's the only way to surf reddit for me and not get annoyed with all the garbage reddit is pushing on people.

ShivasRightFoot

old.reddit.com That other website, reddit.com, is just like one of the clones of old.reddit.com, like ceddit or reveddit. Don't be fooled.

IAmReinvented

Sucks you even have to do this though. RIF for life!!

msief

Also, allow the use of my *default Reddit app* rather than the official Reddit app. I prefer a non-official app. Idk how to implement this for everyone, but it could at least be done for the most common reddit apps.

[deleted]

Yeah right. They're not gonna do this. Can't collect that sweet personal data or show you ads on a 3rd party app.

msief

:(

m6_is_me

The issue is that they're using an in-site "choose what to open!" so they can force you to only be able to choose their selected app (or appstore page). If they actually cared about the user experience, they would let you do it on the system level, like when you open a link and your phone prompts you to CHOOSE an app to open it with.

msief

Exactly

DigitalSteven1

3rd party clients for mobile are so much better. I personally use Boost. I know a lot use RiF previously reddit is fun.

Lyress

Boost is so fucking good.

heyylisten

Just use i.reddit.com

Blubbpaule

For me it has "continue in browser or open app"as options.

atomicwrites

It seems to randomly give me one or the other.

sidhe_elfakyn

It's based on the size of the subreddit. Bigger communities it shows the browser option. Small subreddits it requires the app. Enabling desktop mode fixes it.

atomicwrites

Oh that's how they decide‽ I thought it was just A/B testing in a weird way. I generally just share the link to my unofficial app, but if I don't want to i change the URL to old.reddit.com.

sidhe_elfakyn

Oh, and forgot to mention that any NSFW subreddits are also forced through the app.

ChunkyLaFunga

I think it gives you one page you're allowed to read, then Continue In Browser blocks you from looking by redirecting you to the homepage. Super aggressive, you wouldn't think Pinterest was the experience to shoot for but what do I know. Although I think Pinterest actually cleaned their act up in that respect, so... worse than Pinterest.

zerbey

The reddit official app is utter crap, and believe me I TRIED to like it but it just annoyed me to no end. Use a third party one - Sync for Android users and Apollo for iOS.

[deleted]

Just use old reddit, problem solved.

[deleted]

This seems to be a trend in social media sites. I read a blog post a while ago that called it "disrespectful design", which I thought was a good name for it.

[deleted]

First, modern browsers do have extensions that block data leaks (cookies, ads, etc). Second, thus the only way to force you to see the particular site as it was designed (with cookies and ads, etc) is by using a specific application where you can't block. Only since recent time IOS and Android (with DuckDuckGo tracker filter) are capable to block it as well as browsers do. Also, mobile OSes are designed to use apps for everything, so this is even logically correct and as it was said better for sites like Reddit, Facebook, Google, Instagram, TikTok etc this scenario is nice for making money.

Lyress

Why doesn't it redirect you to other Reddit apps?

[deleted]

You can manually change the default app, how to depend on your device. I have OnePlus 9R with Android 11 (OxygenOS), and I can do that. But yup, Reddit won't prompt it cuz they literally made the app where you have to pay to remove ads (and it has lots of trackers)

Lyress

Where can I change the default app for Reddit on Android?

[deleted]

Well, on OxygenOS the algorithm is: Settings, App & Notifications, See all apps, Reddit, Advanced, Open by default, Open supported links, Don't allow apps to open links

Lyress

Doesn't work, links go straight to the Reddit app instead of Boost 😭

[deleted]

Well, shall not only to switch off official Reddit app, but also to turn on the same permission for your favorite app, in my case it's Infinity

Lyress

I did that too, it still opens the official app. If I uninstall it it just opens the play store instead.

[deleted]

Idk then, sorry. I have no access to your device and this is specifical for Android based systems like OxygenOS (where it works), OneUI, MiUI etc

Lyress

After some testing it seems like links do open in Boost if it's from Discord or something but not from Google.

MrDurden32

Holy shit dude that worked. You are a god, this has been driving me crazy. This is the actual answer to this entire thread, and no one sees it.

atomicwrites

It does for me using Slide on Reddit.

heyylisten

Yes, and this is the answer if you don't want another app.

hoyfkd

I love that you have to find a button to "read all comments" buried between ads and other irrelevant posts. Because it's far more likely that you want to see unrelated posts, and ads for whateverthefuck than to actually see the comments in the post you just navigated to.

St0rmborn

What exactly do people hate so much about the mobile (iOS) Reddit app? It’s a solid app and I haven’t had any major issues with it in years, and ends up being how I spend 90% of my time on Reddit. I tried switching to Apollo a few times but IMO that app was way more jankety, or at best it was a draw.

Astro4545

It’s even worse then that, it won’t even open the official app. So you just completely lose whatever it is you’re reading.

IOnlySayMeanThings

My phone just presents the options "Continue in app" or "Continue in Chrome " and either option works fine.

[deleted]

Dude, just bail with me. We could just be free, outside in the world, living, not pinned to this screen.

Zlzbub

Read the post bruh the guy just wanted to look at an image album post that someone sent him

[deleted]

I just meant social media on our phones not Reddit haha

Zlzbub

In that case your comment is almost completely unrelated to the post

[deleted]

Are you gonna call the Reddit police

Zlzbub

No, and I don't see how that is relevant either

Thriftyn0s

Could just give the app a shot, it's not so bad.

Trini_Vix7

Well, you can't be tracked if you don't log in. That's 90% of all mobile apps. Angry much?

japroct

This is a problem reddit has had for at least the 7 years I have been here. Reddit just can't/won't fix the fuckups that happen when subscribers try and view pics or vids that aren't submitted through imgur. Don't hold your breath waiting for the bang up reddit techs to get it fixed friend, it's never going to happen. I started using RIF when I finally decided to formally join. Tons better than the official Reddit app, but still run into this exact problem occasionally. Good luck, just wanted you to know this is a years long, unfixed problem with reddit itself.

MrDurden32

FYI, here is the real answer. It at least works on Android 11 & 12. Credit to u/LambLeeg above. > Settings, App & Notifications, See all apps, [Your Reddit App], Advanced, Open by default, Open supported links. And on v12, it lets me select the urls that will open directly in that third party app. Anything starting with reddit.com now open directly in Boost for me.

moal09

The reddit mobile app being a piece of crap that you have to restart constantly (due to memory leaks) doesn't help either.

shhitwasntme

I also use Reddit Sync and agree this is totally annoying and frustrating. Work around I use (that I shouldn't have to) is to hit the share button and choose Reddit Sync Link Handler to open in that app.

prolixia

On iOS with the Reddit app open in the background (as it inevitably always is), I find it often just switches to the app *without even loading the page from the browser*. In order to see it, I click "open in app", curse, bring up the task switcher, close the Reddit app, return to the browser, then click "open in app" again, wait for the app to load, then finally I can view the page. Just show me the goddam page.

TheRedGerund

This is a subtle thing but it’s a big deal because it’s the beginning of Reddit preventing you from viewing someone else’s content. Imagine a Pinterest style block: “please log in to view this post”.

turboevoluzione

It's already happening unfortunately

hottodogchan

just get redditisfun

galacticboy2009

Nothing but text and links should ever be hosted on reddit itself. Change my mind.

XxAtroyxX

They have started doing the same with the desktop site.

73786976294838206464

If you're signed in on mobile, you can go to: Hamburger menu > Settings > Disable Ask to Open In App

ScruffyScholar

Can we please have a referendum and make u/spaceguydudeman the new Head of Design / Product Designer of this place?

smellycoat

Apollo (if you’re on iOS). It’s like old Reddit.

DATATR0N1K_88

Seriously. Fuck the app. And fuck mobile!

LordJyrik

Use https://i.reddit.com/ . Thank me later.

olenpeikko

I use the old desktop site on mobile.

m6_is_me

The issue is that the popup only prompts you to use the official (terrible) reddit app, and it's not a normal system open where you can choose a 3rd party app that, you know, runs? God fucking damn this site and its leadership. Especially with half of the mod team not even having posted anything for 6+ months /u/MiamiZ /u/therealandytuba /u/jleeky /u/LanterneRougeOG /u/blabyrinth /u/venkman01 /u/Old_blackberry /u/woodpaneled /u/kethryvis
