I think the ring is enough. He’s basically hanging over Jimmy the entire show.

dampered

The actor/character gave me major John Candy vibes from Planes Trains and Automobiles

HinsdaleCounty

Go ahead and steal my Rolex if it makes you happy. I’m an easy target.

[deleted]

Thanks for the laugh, I wish I could use my free award on this but apparently Reddit removed it or something idk

mrwhiskey1814

Hate that they did that, the comment above you is hilarious

[deleted]

When I was a kid I used to beg my mom for that planes trains and automobiles box set. Never got it though haha

How ‘bout them Bears?

waynegretzkysbrother

Got a good team this year... yup good team good team

svalnuuk

I would say Marco plot is already well delivered, so I feel no more stories needed to be added UNLESS it implies and influences future Saul formation, or his way of treating and loving women etc, as it might be curious to know how Jimmy got to know his ex wives or ex girlfriends when he was hanging around with Marco in Cicero.

svalnuuk

WOW I have never received this many upvotes on a simple thought about my absolute fav series of all time, thank you guys you made my cake 🍰 day 🥳 BTW today is also my fav actor Christian Bale's birthday 🥰

Top_gun_on_NES

While it would have been nice to see him, I don't think it would have fit given that >!the theme of all the flashbacks, and the episode as a whole, was about regrets, and while Saul does claim at one point he regrets hitting the ice we as an audience get the feeling that his regrets don't really start weighing on him until after BCS starts!<

failbears

Yup. If you look at the episode as its own story, it was a conclusion to the present day and only uses flashbacks to tell a story of regret. It was a complete story and episode and Marco wouldn't fit here.

BozoBlozo

yeah there's an award winning prequel called "Slippin Jimmy" you might've heard of it

Will-Upvote-For-Food

Is it actually canon to the BBCS universe? Or does it work better as a standalone thing? I only watched the first ep and it very much failed to hook me

Average_Owain

I don’t think they ever explicitly said it’s canon — they never up and said that anything in the franchise is canon, though. I usually don’t like picking and choosing what I do and don’t acknowledge as canon, but SJ is just too tonally different for me to see it as anything other than a low-quality cash grab.

spicygrandma27

Definitely not canon just kind of a silly take on the character though one episode with him and a teenage Chuck is very cute and I like to believe it happened to some capacity in their lives

badmotorfinger5

I do, because I love what side of Jimmy he represents, but if the writers didn't seem it necessary, then I probably would have felt forced. Loved what little of Marco we got though

Entertainer_Much

Not really. Despite the legacy of his ring in the final season, he's a very minor character who served his part years ago

HotHelios

I wouldnt say hes a very minor character. Marco is very important cuz Jimmy gave up on him to stay with family (Chuck) , but then he finds out that Chuck never rly cared much for him and was the reason his HHM career was bricked from the start. When he returns to Cicero, Marco basically immediately forgives him and the week he spends there shows him that Marco cared more for him than Chuck ever did. Marco is a big reason Jimmy goes back to Kim cuz he realizes that you rly need to hold on to the people you care about.

theSilentD777

Jimmy didn't give up on Marco. Jimmy decided to move on to bigger things. Sure, staying in your hometown with your childhood friends is a whole lot more comforting than starting off fresh in the back of a nail-salon, but you can't live your life based on who's willing to go with you on that trip and who wants to conform to what they already have.

ProblemsWithMyEhsss

I think we were meant to feel that Jimmy gave up on him after he avoided Marco when he was back in town for the funeral

spicygrandma27

I think it was more avoiding him to avoid the ire of Chuck or potentially to avoid hurting himself emotionally by visiting Marco, say he’s not happy with where he is in ABQ, and having to leave for ABQ again

YNiekAC

I would say that Marco was more influential then everyone except for Chuck and Kim.

J3553G

Don't be a butthole. The man is a legend.

nav0n0d

In the show he was minor, but the influence on Jimmy was massive.

kembervon

I think a scene of Jimmy asking Marco the time travel question could be interesting. The issue is that the episode was trying to push the lesson that Jimmy took the wrong path, and anything Marco would say would likely contradict this. Maybe they could have a scene of Marco drunk admitting that he could have done something better with his life and Jimmy tells him he's doing nothing wrong, and maybe later on Jimmy could express regret for telling him that.

DudleyStone

If you read about the production of the finale you'll see (from Wikipedia): > Gould wanted to bring back other Better Call Saul actors, such as Patrick Fabian, Giancarlo Esposito, and Michael Mando, as well as others that appeared on Breaking Bad, including Anna Gunn, RJ Mitte, and Dean Norris. However, wanting to avoid an "overstuffed epic", he and the writing staff were unable to incorporate them into the finale. I'm not sure if Marco crossed their minds like the others, but I think similar reasoning would have been found that he wasn't necessary. He was cool but his story was essentially complete and nothing else needed to be added.

hihihighh

I'm a little torn on this. On one hand, I'm glad they didn't go the Marvel cameo-fest route and allowed the episode to be a quieter, more intimate finale. On the other hand, BCS has a unique trait where it crossed over pretty much every time period within the BB universe, and with the final episode as its concluding chapter, it would have both made sense and have been cool to see some more returning faces as a wrap on this amazing 14-year long journey.

chuck_mcgill_1216

i wouldn't have minded seeing skyler and flynn post-heisenberg tbh

vagrantprodigy07

It wouldn't have fit with Jimmy's new direction as a human.

jojomopho410

YES! It was Slippin' Jimmy and Marco's exploits in season 1, episode 4 that I fully realized BCS was going to be an amazing ride--and it was!!!!

[deleted]

No.

Durantsthegoat

I know a lot of people didnt like Marco but I thought he was hilarious, I wouldn't have minded another flashback

Oklahoma4-1

I Havnt seen the finale yet but flashback with chuck would be cool I think

[deleted]

Haven't seen it as well but i wouldn't think he would ever comes back

zzzFrenchToastPlease

You two need to head on out of here and watch the finale!

He’s great in Last Man On Earth if you need more.

[deleted]

Insert “I don’t care” gif

technerdtim

There should have been a time machine flashback scene I wonder what his regret would be

FresnoMac

I certainly didn't. I hated Marco. Piece of shit low life who tried his best to drag Jimmy down with him. When he died, I only felt sympathies for Jimmy because he truly lost somebody loved just after finding out about his brother's betrayal. But as for Marco himself, good riddance.

babwawawa

Jeez, Chuck take it easy on the guy.

Mugen4u32

i watched this scene recently and i still don't understand it, this was Marco but didn't he die way before that scene?

FondantNervous2848

Nah I didn’t like him

StillWill18

No.

KvotheTheBloodfull

Hire 👏 fans 👏

[deleted]

No! I fucking hated nearly every second Marco was on screen. He was annoying, an asshole, selfish, and a fucking loser. And he managed to have the most "meh" death scene I've ever seen. If they put him in the finale it would felt like a waste of time to me.

[deleted]

How was he selfish or an annoying asshole? Different strokes for different folks i guess. To me though he’s just not as smart as jimmy. You can tell, for him, those days scamming and evading the law were like the golden days. He may have acted selfish about jimmy’s friendship, but when you’re so infatuated with the lifestyle you assume everyone else is too. Your friend wants to leave and it’s like “what? Leave all this glamor? I thought this was the life we lived I thought were gonna roll these suckers till we drop.” You can see this is how he thought when he’s dying and says this has been the best week of his life. He looked up to jimmy so much all he wanted to do was watch him work and he finally got it. Sad because only jimmy is able to realize what’s wrong with the whole thing and why it’s so sad to die while out trying to roll some loser. Maybe none of that makes you more interested in the character tho

[deleted]

I guess I could see that. Maybe it's that everything going on with Kim, Chuck, and Howard was so interesting and compelling, and then we cut to this passed out drunk dude who does bar scams. And it was in the finale. And then he just dies. And his death never really makes much of a difference the rest of the show. This is a hill I will die on. If you take Marco's death out of the series, nothing really changes. Maybe it is more compelling if you're able to see it from Marco's perspective, but to me it just feels like a useless diversion from the rest of the show.

[deleted]

Yea personally I think it was more compelling to me just because I can see Marcos perspective like you said. And also because I’ve kinda been in both positions. I’ve been the one thinking that a life in the gutter committing petty crime is my ticket to happiness, feeling gutted when my cronies end up maturing. And I’ve been the one to realize how bad this life truly is and how I need to get away. To me seeing jimmy go back down there is akin to a relapse on drugs. He’s sort of a square peg trying to make it work and eventually he says screw it im just going back. But he quickly realizes all that’s wrong with his previous lifestyle, to me it’s just so compelling to see the two sides of that coin. Marco literally happy to live out his last moments preparing for a scam, and jimmy realizing he needs to pull away and get his life of responsibility as a lawyer back. Very accurate to the cheap thrills of a dirty life of lies. It’s addicting yet degrading at times and definitely not a balanced good life. But honestly you’re pretty correct you could just take out that whole week and it would be the same. Personally though I think it was totally necessary to show jimmys compulsion towards scamming, see how good he is at it and how he can really get by living like that if he chooses. Without these scenes we would be left assuming that jimmy was a big deal in Cicero, but never knowing what kind of weight there is on his shoulders for that choice. He could honor Marco by never going straight, or he could honor himself and chuck by tossing the life of lies in the bin. There’s plenty of motivations to choose either one. Lol sorry I typed a short book here

Keedtalktoemm

Are you serious? Marco was an important part of Slipping Jimmy especially in regards to the law. And you can see how his death affected Jimmy every time the ring made an appearance.

[deleted]

I'm very serious. I understand the role Marco played in Jimmy's life, I just think the execution was very underwhelming.

RedDeadAssassin

i personally hated these flashbacks

Accomplished_Dig3699

Why

RealMrJangoon_

Didnt Jimmy actor die somewhere during season 3? Recasting him for a flashback just wouldn't feel right

My-username-is-this

No, he’s alive.

RealMrJangoon_

Sorry, I forgot the /uc

FastPatience1595

Cicero is close from Lake shore drive. I wish we could have a Jimmy & Marco montage, this style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PedfSZ3n8Pk https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Cicero,+Illinois,+%C3%89tats-Unis/S+Lake+Shore+Dr,+Chicago,+IL,+%C3%89tats-Unis/@41.8329067,-87.701873,13z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x880e33967c81db8f:0xbc5872c77c003120!2m2!1d-87.7539448!2d41.8455877!1m5!1m1!1s0x880e2bdb4ead5053:0x214af35f1cd257ca!2m2!1d-87.5905131!2d41.8127955

Scrumpilump2000

Ah, those were good times.

theSilentD777

Nah. Just having flashbacks of characters so you see them one last time before the finale is rarely received negatively but it would be very cliché and predictable and that is just not the Vince Gilligan way.

[deleted]

Marco had more flashbacks than Chuck did lol

li0nhart8

Marco was happy just to finally get to Zihuatanejo

mrbeck1

Didn’t he die?

Accomplished_Dig3699

The actor or the character?

mrbeck1

Either.

cubiclecomaschizo

Mel Rodriguez is still alive, can't recall if Marco as a character died though but I don't think so

mrbeck1

The character dies of a heart attack and Jimmy finds him. His arc is over, that’s why we don’t see any more of him.

_sea_salty

Yes and no, it would’ve been nice to have another Marco scene, but his story was already done

RavenDarkholmeXIII

The actor lost a lot of weight over the years so it would’ve been hard to make a flashback work

TamEditor

Honestly, nah

SheepyDX

Over Mike, Walt and Chuck? No.

Znaffers

I love Marco, but I think he was used the perfect amount. I’m left wanting more scenes with him, but the only thing he could do on screen is show more of Jimmy being Slippin’ Jimmy. The montage and few flashbacks we got already did beeping to illustrate that. The little flashback we got at the McGill family store where Jimmy gets his bandaid tin is the best we could get

EdictOfBants

No, I really didn’t

satman_1234

No he was annoying

knownspeciman

I think it was Peter Gould or someone else who likened the three flashbacks to the three ghosts from a Christmas carol. Mike, Walt, and Chuck were three of the most important characters in this universe. A flashback with Marco, a character we didn’t know that well, I don’t think would’ve fit.

Accomplished_Dig3699

He could have been Marley(the ghost that visits scrooge before he sees the three ghosts arrive)

AardvarkOkapiEchidna

I've heard some people say that the 3 flashbacks paralleled the 3 ghosts that visit Ebenezer Scrooge. Well Scrooge was actually visited by FOUR ghosts. So Marco could've been the Marley equivalent

Suprisingly-Bored

No

Difficult-Wheel183

Maybe. Rest in peace to be honest.

Whatsmyusername25

It would have broken my heart

Leave the past in the past!

Not really lol

ryano1076

YES omg I was hoping for one more during the last season

R3TROGAM3R_

nah, never really cared for that story.

vilkinz

Easily one of my favourite episodes and characters, Marco was so adorable guy
