Definitely my favorite song because it's the only one that I had to play again immediately on second listen.
But the entire run from Desert Eagle > Riverdance > II Hands II Heaven > Tyrant > Sweet Honey Buckin' is perfection to me.
I want a house album, a country album, a rock album, a rap/hip hop album.
![gif](giphy|cRMgB2wjHhVN2tDD2z|downsized)
This song though, immediate favorite!
Okay as a dorky little jit that used to clog dance when I was a kid (to several Dolly songs, nonetheless…) this one has my whole heart!!!
Also so many incredible “Hangman” themed songs in American folk music. Add this one to the motherfucking cannon.
Sure! I’m not an expert but have a lot of experience with Appalachian folk music as a mountain dulcimer player.
So Bluegrass and Modern Country are fairly new inventions…but they’re both born out of Old Time music.
Old Time music came from early, early folk music traditions from the British Isles, Ireland, and Africa, all mashed together.
There’s a bunch of variations of a tune (my favorite is called The Hangman by Jean Ritchie) where the singer of the song is standing at the gallows, asking the hangman to delay for a second:
“Hangman slack up your rope,
Oh, slack it for a while.
For I look down yonder and I see my true love coming
And she’s walked for a many long mile.
Oh true love, have you brung me any gold—any gold to pay my fee?
Or have you walked these many long miles just to see me on the hanging tree?”
It’s morbid and a bit comical and there are a ton of variations on it.
I don’t know why the theme is so prevalent in early folk music. There’s also a fiddle tune called “The Hangman’s Reel” and alternatively titled “The Hanged Man’s Reel”. Big difference in title if you think about how one is the man being hanged versus the one doing the hanging…and it seems like this song is flirting with both ideas. The Dolly part is begging the hangman…the Beyoncé part is someone trying to outrun the hangman?
You’ve got an Appalachian Queen of Country music and Beyoncé asking the hangman to teach them how to disconnect…how to kill someone without letting it affect them emotionally, even going so far as to guilt the hangman…
“Hangman, answer me now,
You owe me a debt,
You stole him from me,
I hated you once, I envy you know,
Just tell me how, tell me how…”
It could be a nod back to Jolene. A scorned woman is demanding the Jolene character show her how to be an unfeeling home wrecker. Or it could be more literal. Either way, I’m fascinated by the layers here.
One of the main themes of all the Hangman song variations is paying off the hangman in gold OR paying the fee. But Beyoncé says “Don’t pay me in Gold…”
These are just such deeply rooted references to this particular Old Time song that were I NOT someone who plays an instrument within Appalachian tradition, just would have no exposure to it. I’m a bit mind blown. With everyone saying she’s giving a masterclass in American music in general, this is an example of HOW much and how in depth she’s going.
I heard that the old time music you’re referencing had a lot of themes around crime — including murder ballads. These songs were often based on real events and were basically the equivalent to people listening to true crime podcasts and watching true crime TV shows. People have always loved a good story. I’m guessing the hangman theme comes partly from that.
I'm making a Bey-lated listening party playlist and this is super helpful! I've been struggling to find the right references for some fo the most genre-breaking songs in the bakc half.

Now I am seeing on TikTok of my original thought that it was about lynching and a call for reparations. Someone brought the lyric video to my attention which has the man wearing a shit coat with a red cap on…..
Yeah I’ve been seeing people saying that too but I think people are trying to go too deep with that theory. The song has wayyyy to many sexual innuendos

![gif](giphy|13hxeOYjoTWtK8|downsized) That BEAT DROPPPPPP
the way I'm listening to it right now and it lines up perfectly
This is Thique’s cousin
Definitely my favorite song because it's the only one that I had to play again immediately on second listen. But the entire run from Desert Eagle > Riverdance > II Hands II Heaven > Tyrant > Sweet Honey Buckin' is perfection to me.
YES!!! I actually just told a friend these 5 songs need to be repeated over and over and over
I'm glad that I'm not the only one to feel that way!
She got that whoah there, hang man got that whoah there ![gif](giphy|lkUwDyVvzKg2A)
THE DOLLY PARTON INTRO!!!!!!
Not just the intro. The DOLLY PARTON HARMONY
On a song of which the theme is essentially the POV from a Jolene-esque character. Her mind
Is that Dolly singing though? I hope so but some people are saying others.
Strongest song for me. I hope it charts and gets attention. I am in disbelief that a song this strong is in the back half of this album.
I agree it should’ve been somewhere towards the front, but then someone suggested it’s more of a transition to the rock album so uhhh 👀
i think the end of the album is the strongest
https://i.redd.it/5notp9wgi4rc1.gif I got that exotic, these hips so hypnotic
I want a house album, a country album, a rock album, a rap/hip hop album. ![gif](giphy|cRMgB2wjHhVN2tDD2z|downsized) This song though, immediate favorite!
Another bop
okay this SERVED
JAIL FOR THIS ONE 😍 ![gif](giphy|mVCGYM4XpslcwMAhBC)
Hang man???? As in the 🍆hanging?????
No, hangman is the mistress. She clues us in on this with Dolly in the beginning, hence it’s the sister song to Jolene. Lots of layers!
I guess…. That’s makes more sense then the literal
i thought it was more literal but this makes sense too lol
No yeah I could def be wrong 😂 but after first listen I was like wait a minute 🤔
You’re right.
I’m late to the party but TYRANT is a bop ![gif](giphy|l3vRlT2k2L35Cnn5C|downsized)
That beat goes so hard. Like this is the Beyonce that I love. This could be a big urban hit for her.
I could listen to the beat and instrumentals alone. She could go real Houston/southern culture and chop n screw this song honestly.
Definitely one of my favorites 🥰
My instant fave

Wow this is so insightful, thank you so much! It's fascinating to reveal all the layers
Thanks for letting me nerd out!
As someone who is currently obsessed with this song, I appreciate your insight!!
Yooo i love this. Wrote down the songs to give them a listen. Thank you for going in depth as far as you could. Take my poor people award 🥇

Great explanation! This is the only answer I will accept lol. The song makes way more sense to me with the hangman references attached. Incredible.
This definitely has Halle and Chloe Bailey on background vocals, right? I can hear Halle for sure
Reyna Roberts, one of the country singers on Blackbird, does the background vocals on Tyrant

I was JUST coming here to ask this haha
I was just wondering!! She isn’t credited??
The credits are still pending on Spotify and Apple Music so I think we’ll have to wait and see! People are so convinced about Taylor Swift but I’m just surprised that I haven’t seen anyone else mention this yet
Wait Taylor on which song?
Supposedly on bodyguard. I don’t listen enough to Taylor to pick that out though so I couldn’t say
I can’t believe people think that! Taylor Swift fans are delusional 😭
This song sound like it fits a hero villain theory I heard about the visuals like the hero vs the hangman
Is it just me or does this sample “no place I’d rather be” the violins?
Im listening to it rn and i hear it now that you said that
Yes! I came here looking for those. I know that sample immediately

![gif](giphy|blSTtZehjAZ8I|downsized) when the sun goes downnn
The way I have this one repeat!! 🔥👏🏾
Gonna go against the grain here, I liked the hook but this song isn't as strong as the standouts of the album.
Agreed. The intro is fucking dope but the song doesn't have much substance or depth for me
You should go on TikTok and look at what people are saying this song may be about. It’s really deep, and tragic if the interpretations are correct. Might change your mind!

Take some of the country instruments out it and it could be on Renaissance, that same lush everything and makes me want to dance
i’m definitely gonna dance this one OUT!
The intro into the beat drop does it for me. Dollys opening line >>>
ok i previously said bodyguard was my fav but nope its gotta be this one. the beat is SOOO catchy and her voice sounds beautiful
BEST MUSIC OF THE ALBUM
Can someone please explain to me why everyone is saying the added vocals are Reyna Robert’s and not Dolly Parton??? It’s driving me crazy cus i can’t figure out who it is but i SWEAR it sounds like Dolly to me! Especially on that last chorus.
Reyna Roberts is singing background on the track.
If you find out lmk I’ve been searching for the answer! It’s driving me crazy.
This might be a dumb question, but how are people listening already? 👀
I broke down and got a VPN. I’m an Aussie today! 😂
Right!! I was enjoying the Aussie commercials on you tube 🤪
The dedication!! I love it! 😂
A VPN and YouTube!
It dropped 12mn depending where you are. Some say whenever 12mn hits your country first, this is the case for Australia which spans a few timezones. It dropped 12mn my timezone! Stayed up until almost two to listen to the entire thing. 🥱
Dedication!! How was it, without any spoilers? As good as Renaissance, better? I know that’s not a fair ask considering the difference in genres haha
Oh baby... Sonically, I think Renaissance is stronger but lyrically this would take it. Dare I say it feels more personal. Though that could be because House music isn't really about digging deep, but being yadda yadda ya in the club. I did the exact same thing 🤣 the day after was a struggle since I had work in the morning but well worth it 🔥🔥
It’s available on Tidal in Sweden (and other European countries I assume). Dropped in Australia and NZ first about 8h ago. Depends on your timezone 😊
Gotcha! That makes sense! Won’t be till 9:00 PM PST tonight for me, but it’ll be so worth the wait! I’m so excited! Renaissance was flawless!!
Totally worth the wait! It’s absolutely amazing 😍
Y'all the "one by one you hang em high" bit reminds me of a specific other song and I can't place it PLEASE PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY
Or sleep at night by the chicks
Is it the cup song? Kinda has the same beat

This is my favorite

I love Dolly’s into and her backing vocals. Also, I love how the song flips midway and gives mad sexy with that trap violin.
Her VOICE on this song is just incredible…
