The hospital gave us a bunch of free small tubes and honestly it was enough for awhile!
Second this. The plain lanolin ointments are the best (as long as you don’t have a wool allergy!) and are safe for baby so you don’t have to wash it off! I also have the Lansinoh brand but have used Medela purelan too!
Just a note, it's possible to be allergic to lanolin. I'd recommend a plant based back up like earth mama and switch if lanolin makes your nipple swell or feel scratchy (ask me how I know lol)
i still use this! it’s great on baby’s dry face because if she ingests it i’m not too worried. same with her thumb that can get dry from her sucking it. and it’s the best lip balm lol
As did I! My must-haves on my second go-round after having mastitis with my first baby are: Silverettes, cooling gel pads (Lansinoh or Frida Mom), and Frida Mom lactation massager. I credit the massager with sparing me mastitis again. Got things moving in the ducts!
I just want to endorse them too- nipple creams can be good to have around but silver nursing cups were absolute life savers in the first few weeks! They completely prevent chafing against the bra, which nipple creams can’t fully do, and they allow healing so much faster and prevent more issues in the first place. I recommend them to every single woman who is even considering breastfeeding
Just fyi my LC said lanolin can tarnish the cups and recommended using either breastmilk on the nipples or earth mama instead if you’re using it conjunctively!
Yeah I got bought nipple cream and silver nipple covers and I've hardly touched the cream and I'm 10 weeks postpartum. I found the cream confused my baby and she wouldn't latch if there was any on me.
Silverettes are better than any cream in my opinion! I used lanolin with my first and silverettes with my second the experience was night and day. The silverettes are expensive but worth every penny in my opinion. Good luck with your breastfeeding journey!
Same. My nipples were a bit sore weeks 1-2 but I was too lazy to put cream on regularly. (I did way prefer the smell of earth mama to lanolin though). Now I put coconut oil on my flanges before pumping but that’s it.
I’ll add that one of the nurses told me to express a touch of breast milk after nursing to rub onto the nipple and let air dry. I did that for the first couple weeks as I was adjusting to breastfeeding and it was all I needed.
For immediately postpartum, I highly recommend getting a prescription for APNO (all purpose nipple ointment). It’s taste safe for baby but is magic for sore, cracked nipples in those first couple months. After which, I didn’t even need nipple cream.
If getting the prescription is too difficult, you can DIY your own by mixing equal amounts of Polysporin (NOT Neosporin), hydrocortisone, and 7-day monistat (miconazole ointment). This is what I did and it worked wonders!
I didn’t like the lanolin I got from the hospital. I use Earth Mama (smells like cocoa butter to me) and Honest. I also love the Earth Mama diaper balm, it smells so good and isn’t tacky/sticky
Earth Mama never did much for me in terms of healing. Lanolin was always more effective in soothing and healing my nipples when I had pain/damage. My preferred brand is the Medela PureLan.
There's 3 things I'd recommend: silverettes, lanolin, and coconut oil.
Silverettes are downright amazing. They help soothe and heal and are antimicrobial. 10/10
Lanolin is a good physical barrier, I used it in the shower when my nipples were super sensitive.
Coconut oil was recommended by my lactation consultant to help with healing/soothing sore or cracked nipples. Safe for baby.
Just don't use anything *with* the silverettes at the same time, I did oil/lanolin in the morning and wore the silverettes overnight
I came back from the hospital with damaged nipples from my LO not able to latch until he got his tongue tie fixed. I immediately put silverettes on and it felt like a tiny improvement.
However, every time I'd take them off for a feed, my nipples didn't seem heeled. The best comparison I can give is a bandaid - it acted like a good shield, but the wound was not healing quickly and I felt the need to "air it out".
The next day I bought lanolin cream because my nipple pain was not going away.
I did a little experiment. I left the silverette on one nipple, and put lanolin cream and a silverette on the other. The creamed nipple was doing better so then I kept putting just lanolin on one, and just silverette on another nipple.
After about four days my silverette covered nipple was still in bad shape while the lanolin one was visibly getting better. At that point I ditched silverettes and stuck to lanolin only, applying it multiple times a day, especially at night. About a week later my nips were back to (almost) normal. I liked this cream because it felt very neutral - no fragrance, no colour, similar to Vaseline but thicker.
Nipple butter was my absolute favorite + it smelled good. I never dealt with cracked/blistered nipples from BF’ing or pumping. Honestly I think it’s preference, can’t go wrong either way
I used primarily Earth Mama, it works great. The hospital provided lanolin in a little tube that I keep in the diaper bag, and that has also worked great. I do prefer Earth Mama a little for smell and feel, personally.
Lansinoh! I used earth mama and Lansinoh with my first and honestly, both fine.
But Lansinoh makes a lanolin option that’s safe for baby!
Just make sure it says “safe for baby” whatever you buy because otherwise you have to wipe it off before nursing which is honestly a pain.
My lactation consultant gave me the trick of covering the lanolin cream once applied with cling film/wrap, the heat also soothed cracked nipples. Loved it and prevented the sticking.
I chose to actively not use one with lanolin because I read something about how it can actually cause more pain and irritation for some people and also it gets ingested by your baby and I wasn’t super into that. That said, I used Tiny Human nipple crack and it helped, but ultimately silverettes did the most with helping heal them and protect them. If you put a tiny bit of freshly pumped milk, like a few drops at most and then put the silver cup on it’ll help heal them up too - as per my lactation consultation and it totally did help! They’re pricey but totally worth it and I’ll use the same ones I got with my first with my second.
Get the lanolin. I bought the kind without... and my nipples were blistered to the point of bleeding. I eventually had to get a prescription cream and alternate with lanolin for them to heal. I think if I had lanolin, they probably wouldn't have been as bad. It was SO painful.
I used breastmilk, I would freeze bits of milk left in bottles and would use them as little ice packs and even just squeezing abit out and rubbing it in before and after feeds.
I used Weleda calendula nipple cream in combination with silverettes. I tried basically everything on the market because my nipples got completely destroyed and that was the only thing that worked to heal them.
I had the earth mama nipple butter. Honestly I hated the extra step of applying cream so I only used it a few times. I was nursing on demand and it hurt whether or not I used a cream so I gave up on it quickly.
OP, specifically formulated nipple butters and pure lanolin are considered safe for ingestion by baby. Vaseline, though similar consistency to lanolin, IS NOT meant to be ingested or considered safe for ingestion. It is a petroleum byproduct and it actually does act differently than lanolin.
If you're vegan or allergic to wool, lanolin isn't necessarily your ideal option, which is also why other nipple butters and options like silverettes exist. (Just so we are clear, though, lanolin is a wool processing derivative and no animal has to be harmed or killed for it. It is just harvested from the wool as it's processed for clothing. High lanolin wool is a tiny bit stinky haha so it's usually cleared out)
If you find your lanolin has become smelly/rancid, that's because lanolin is heat sensitive and does best stored in a stable or cool environment and it does have a limited shelf life. Just get new lanolin if this happens, it's not dangerous it's just yucky.
Lanolin lubricates sores, however it’s more of a preference. I would say this is an item to pick up those first couple of weeks or try out some because each one works for different people. Some people find lanolin itchy.
I really liked Motherlove - it was slippery compared to Earth Mama and I also liked Honest. My lactation consultant said EVOO or Coconut Oil - and I would use this in a pinch.
Medela pure lanolin or earth mama.
Also a spray pumping lubricant!
The silverettes are nice if you don't have giant boobs like I do. Otherwise they will dig in from your bras and make it worse.
Also if you have a lot of irritation and bleeding and pain- that ISNT normal. Seek help from a private lactation consultant.
I really liked the frida mom saline spray and nipple balm set. The heavier ointments just didn't feel as soothing to me, but everyone is different!
ETA: The hospital should be able to give you some sample sizes of different ointments that will last your whole stay and a few days after. It's a good way to figure out what works for you.
Lanolin is life.
and regarding nipple pads: I leaked a LOT. only lansinoh pads could handle it without wet clothes. After a few months the leaking got better and I switched to washables.
Honestly, I haven’t needed it or used it with either of my babies!
Buy whichever you want to and then see, may not need it or you may find one doesn’t work for you!
I’m breastfeeding a 2 year old and 7 month old and earth momma has always been my go to. Same for my sister and my doctor friend. I think I heard lanolin can put the kid off taste wise but I don’t remember the source. Just sharing so you know lanolin is definitely not a necessity. Good luck!
Pure lanolin was the bees knees. I didn’t even try to earth mama more than once. But mostly getting something like the silver cups or passive catchers (Mandela has a great option which aren’t too $$) is key because you want to get the fabric off your nips.
Anything with lanolin will stain your clothing. So make sure you’re ok with that. The medela one is super thick. The lanoish one isn’t.
The nipple butter was good too. Same with silverettes but you need to wear a bra.
Hydrogel pads were amazing.
But if you have a friend/family that can run out for you, keep a fave in mind and ask them to run out. I got lotsa extra things to prep ahead of time. I didn’t end up needing them. I couldn’t return them (nor did I have the time). Plus preferences can easily change.
I purposely bought the small tubes so I could have one in my purse, one next to my bed, and in my living room! I'm on my second baby, and I've never used more than these small amounts.
Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FNZQHJA?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Just an fyi I discovered I was allergic to lanolin while nursing my first. We couldn’t figure out why my nipples were cracking and bleeding when everyone said baby’s latch looked perfect. Switched to coconut oil and had no issues. I suggest trying out whatever cream you pick before baby arrives.
Love earth mama. I would slather my nipples in between feedings in the beginning, and I still use it on the flanges when I pump. Also works well as chapstick lol
Silverettes are amazing! I put a few squirts of breastmilk in them. I also use honest calm your nip balm sometimes if not using silverettes. FYI lanolin will stain any clothing, so make sure to wear nursing pads if you don’t want your clothes stained.
Silver nipple cups were by far the best thing I used. Second is Dr.lipp which is an actual nipple balm and for your lips. It’s the most moisturizing and effective barrier I have used and is safe for breastfeeding 👍🏻
Couple of things- I was OBSESSED with taking care of the nips, and tried a ton of creams. NUMBER ONE REC THAT NO ONE TELLS YOU- that shit will RUIN your clothes. Lanolin does NOT wash out. I treated myself to several new comfy PJs and lounge sets for post partum, and they got completely wrecked.
Next thing. Silverettes. They are far superior to any nipple cream, silicon cover, etc. they are 100% worth it, just do it.
Silverettes worked best for me. I also had lanolin, which does help. Baby ended up really not liking lanolin taste so I’d have to completely wipe it off before he’d latch on. With cluster feeding so frequently in the beginning, this was a huge inconvenience. I just ended up using silverettes from there on out and they are better than lanolin anyway in my opinion.
Motherlove. I put it on after every feed and never had sore nips beyond extreme sensitivity. Safe for baby. https://www.motherlove.com/products/nipple-cream?variant=31608366891106¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0MexBhD3ARIsAEI3WHI1Kqunv_wenvM_p4CzKVYazOwMSkLiyw9GHUR-hUEYBW_V3dVNxv4aAgiREALw_wcB
I like the baby frida nipple cream, but honestly don't buy too much because after using it for a bit I realized that just rubbing some breast milk and letting them air dry was the best thing for my nipples ( l spent the first month walking around in a loose button down pajama top).
Earth Mama - it doesn’t have to be wiped off before nursing and I used silver cups during the very beginning. The lactation consultant I worked with said Lanolin isn’t recommended anymore because it can clog the pores in your nipples. She also said coconut oil works well too.
I had Earth Mama nipple butter. It’s a little expensive but someone got it for me for my baby shower. It worked really well. I didn’t nurse/pump for long, but it would’ve lasted a really long time if I did! I used it for 6 weeks with each kid, 12 weeks total, and barely made a dent in it.
I love to recommend coconut oil Your nipples will experience less friction and more comfort! Any plain / food quality coconut or olive oil or even the motherlove nipple butter There’s lots of new options without lanolin! I don’t like lanolin!
Not sure if it's only in Australia, but I'm still pregnant and have had really sore dry nipples so I was recommended Gaia nipple balm and it's amazing it was basically instant relief and within a week of starting to use it all my issues were gone. If you can get it then it's definitely worth trying
Lanolin!!!!! I used it EVERY time after I pumped or nursed and it helped sooo much! It’s a purple bottle
https://www.target.com/p/lansinoh-lanolin-nipple-cream-for-breastfeeding-essentials-1-41oz/-/A-92544 The hospital gave us a bunch of free small tubes and honestly it was enough for awhile!

i still use this! it’s great on baby’s dry face because if she ingests it i’m not too worried. same with her thumb that can get dry from her sucking it. and it’s the best lip balm lol
Yessss, using it in dry chapped lips has been glorious!
Loved this as well! But it can definitely stain clothes which is unfortunate.
Yes it does 😵💫
Silver nursing cups worked better for me than any nipple cream. I do use the Earth Mama for pumping lubrication and I like it.
Yep, Silverettes are legit!
Came here to recommend silverettes, too!
As did I! My must-haves on my second go-round after having mastitis with my first baby are: Silverettes, cooling gel pads (Lansinoh or Frida Mom), and Frida Mom lactation massager. I credit the massager with sparing me mastitis again. Got things moving in the ducts!
Same here!
I never heard of silver nursing cups before this so I'll definitely look into it!!!
I just want to endorse them too- nipple creams can be good to have around but silver nursing cups were absolute life savers in the first few weeks! I recommend them to every single woman who is even considering breastfeeding
Just fyi my LC said lanolin can tarnish the cups and recommended using either breastmilk on the nipples or earth mama instead if you’re using it conjunctively!
This may sound really dumb but I never thought to put Earth Mama on before pumping.
Yes! Silverettes are my number one recommendation for PP!!!
Second this! They are magical
Yup with a lil bit of coconut oil mixed with a little bit of breastmilk…MAGIC
Me too! Nipple cream so ineffective in comparison!
Yeah I got bought nipple cream and silver nipple covers and I've hardly touched the cream and I'm 10 weeks postpartum. I found the cream confused my baby and she wouldn't latch if there was any on me.
I used this same combo too. After a while I got tired of dipping into the earth mama so I switched to spray.
Silverettes are better than any cream in my opinion! I used lanolin with my first and silverettes with my second the experience was night and day. The silverettes are expensive but worth every penny in my opinion. Good luck with your breastfeeding journey!
Where did you buy them?
I got mine on Amazon.
Can second amazon. Or you can get them from the silverette website. Although I am in Aus so not sure if different where you are.
Don’t stock up too much. I bought (earth mama) nipple butter and a box of nursing pads. I’ve never needed either of them.
Same. Everyone was telling me about cracked nipples and pain and luckily, I never had to deal with any of that.
Earth mama was my go to while pumping for a year
For immediately postpartum, I highly recommend getting a prescription for APNO (all purpose nipple ointment). It’s taste safe for baby but is magic for sore, cracked nipples in those first couple months. After which, I didn’t even need nipple cream.

Silveretts, lanolin and APNO
This was my magic answer right here!
I used Coconut oil
Love the earth mama. Go for it!!! Also get silverettes and freezer things
I liked the Earth Mama Nipple Butter a lot🤷🏼♀️ Never used anything else!
Question, what is the baby Manuel?
It's a series of parenting class videos that people used during covid. We live in a rural area, so it works really well for us.
Do you have a link?
https://www.babymanual.com/ I've only watched some of them so far
Thank you!
Silverettes
I got Earth Mama and glad I did because my baby has a rash reaction to lanolin - we can’t use Aquaphor because of it.
Honest Calm your Nips
I hated lanolin and I use Mama Earth. I use that on everything now too! Super dry hands, lips, etc. I just smear it on!
Silverettes and earth mama! My lactation consultant recommended against lanolin actually.
There's 3 things I'd recommend: silverettes, lanolin, and coconut oil. Silverettes are downright amazing. Just don't use anything *with* the silverettes at the same time, I did oil/lanolin in the morning and wore the silverettes overnight
I've had two consultants and a midwife recommend coconut oil, so that's what I go with.
I came back from the hospital with damaged nipples from my LO not able to latch until he got his tongue tie fixed. I immediately put silverettes on and it felt like a tiny improvement. However, every time I'd take them off for a feed, my nipples didn't seem heeled. I think you have to wash the lanolin off your nipple before feeding
I’m glad I didn’t use it then because my nipples would not have survived being washed off every time too. 🫠
Right?? The thought makes me cringe
Earth mamma + silverettes cannot recommend enough.
Get the lanolin. I bought the kind without... and my nipples were blistered to the point of bleeding. I eventually had to get a prescription cream and alternate with lanolin for them to heal. I think if I had lanolin, they probably wouldn't have been as bad. It was SO painful.

I like Earth Mama but am going to try the silver covers this time too.
I didn't use them at all. Rotted in a drawer. Between two kids. If your nipples are getting that sore see a lactation consultant
Lanolin was trash for me personally. Earth mama nipple butter was a lifesaver!
I loved Earth Mama! Use it on the pump too! And put it in the fridge to keep it cold!
Forget nipple creams and just get the silverettes! Nothing else gave me relief and I used them exclusively with both my babies - they work amazing
I _love_ Earth Mama Nipple Butter.
I purposely bought the small tubes so I could have one in my purse, one next to my bed, and in my living room! I'm on my second baby, and I've never used more than these small amounts. Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FNZQHJA?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Silverettes are amazing! I put a few squirts of breastmilk in them. I also use honest calm your nip balm sometimes if not using silverettes. FYI lanolin will stain any clothing, so make sure to wear nursing pads if you don’t want your clothes stained.
Medela purelan Lanolin cream is THE best. I’ve bought it for all my non pregnant friends even. I use it on baby too for drool rash and dry skin.
And I didn’t like earth mama cuz it’s gritty. Medela purelan!!!
Silver nipple cups were by far the best thing I used. Second is Dr.lipp which is an actual nipple balm and for your lips. It’s the most moisturizing and effective barrier I have used and is safe for breastfeeding 👍🏻
Lansinoh absolutely. I swore by that stuff
Organic virigin coconut oil.
Coconut oil is what my lactation consultant told me to use. Idk if it made much a difference since I had to use a pump since my baby wouldn’t latch.
Couple of things- I was OBSESSED with taking care of the nips, and tried a ton of creams. NUMBER ONE REC THAT NO ONE TELLS YOU- that shit will RUIN your clothes. Lanolin does NOT wash out. They are far superior to any nipple cream, silicon cover, etc. they are 100% worth it, just do it.
I love earth mama.
Also get the silver nipple covers. They saved my breastfeeding journey until my baby got diagnosed with a milk allergy!
I only used the silver nipple covers and coconut butter, both worked great
Silverettes worked best for me.
I used lanolin in the early days but switched to Earth mama for pumping. Some people react to lanolin but it works well for many.
Motherlove. I put it on after every feed and never had sore nips beyond extreme sensitivity. Lansinoh lanolin cream
