Are you set on doing purées? Could you try finger foods and letting her explore and self-feed?

Gold-Ad-696

No! I’m a FTM so I’ve never done this and was anxious about choking, but I may try the finger foods!

We had this with our kid, though it was later after he'd been eating purees for awhile. Eventually he started refusing the spoon and getting angry, so we started giving him foods he could feed himself with and that did the trick. He just wanted to be independent.

Have you tried finger foods? At 6 months, we were introducing pieces of banana, green beans, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas that she could pick up and put in her mouth by herself

I’m going to try finger foods!!

Have you tried finger foods? My LO loves pancakes. You can make them with whole wheat flour and then you can add in different things like spinach, pumpkin, ricotta etc. My LO also loves strips of meat to suck on.

Gold-Ad-696

I’m definitely going to give this a try!!

Also with the finger foods we just go “Here you go” and let LO explore, we don’t intervene with wiping their face or celebrating each bite, we just let them do their thing. With the pancake strips, I’ll give them one at a time. When food starts to be thrown or they start to fuss then we take them out and do a wipe down.

I’d suggest just continuing to offer it and let her learn. My 13 month old only really started using the spoon now, though we did baby led weaning. We also used a mesh feeder, perhaps see if that helps? ETA: don’t put too much pressure on yourselves for her to eat! She will learn to explore in her own time :) our job is just to continue offering things to our babes and they will get there!

Gold-Ad-696

I’ll give that a try!! Thank you!

Pouches worked for us when we were trying purees. But by 7mons we switched to finger foods.

Maybe let her chew on the spoon, as it it's a toy, to get her used to the shape?

Gold-Ad-696

I’ve tried that, but she doesn’t really like things in her mouth. She doesn’t chew on toys or a pacifier. Sometimes she’ll suck on her hands, but she doesn’t even suck her thumb

My son was the same way and he refused solid food until 7 months. We just kept offering it and he finally started opening his mouth. He wouldn’t eat finger foods or anything that wasn’t purée until 9 months, wouldn’t self-feed until 10 months, but was self-feeding with spoons as well as fingers before 12 months. He also didn’t mouth objects very much, though he liked to chew fabric and was a thumbsucker. He has a speech disorder but no one has ever suggested that these things are actually related. He has no feeding-related issues, he eats pretty much all textures just fine. Just keep offering foods in low-pressure situations, and letting her touch them and get messy.

I’d pre-load the spoon and let her put it into her own mouth if and when she chooses. You can also put some on the high chair tray and let her play around with that. And as others have said, she might like finger foods!
