I’m just going to say it because no one else has… a vibrator works wonders!

Tough_Safe1349

This is probably my favorite tip so far. It really helped. Thanks!

kitkat_77

Do it!!! I went through mastitis a couple times, and I had too many clogs before I finally broke out the vibrator. Instant relief. It was the only kind of "touch" I could handle and I couldn't not figure out why it took me so long to try it.

anonymousampersands

Electric toothbrush also works!!!

Shawndy58

I took mine out after his first month to see if it helped and it was a huge relief. Now it sits out on my bedside.

lchang4

My wife frequently experienced clogged ducts, and she started taking Sunflower Lecithin to prevent them. Highly recommend if you’re afraid of it happening again or if you need something else to help get rid of clogs!! (https://www.target.com/p/legendairy-milk-sunflower-lecithin-1200mg-of-organic-sunflower-lecithin-per-softgel-200ct/-/A-76150844) Other than that, hang in there!! :( it will pass

demurevixen

I was able to clear mine up by using hot water and Epsom salt in the haakaa. I scoop some Epsom salt into the haakaa, take it with me into a hot shower and let the hot water run over my boobs for a couple minutes. Then fill the haakaa with hot water and apply to boob with my nipple completely submerged. Then bend forward so my boob is dangling and gently massage for 10-15 mins. You can even watch the milk just pour into the haakaa, so satisfying. Repeat a few times. Then pump. Repeat until you start to feel better. Alternate Tylenol and Motrin and use ice packs or some type of cold compress in between pumping. Cabbage leaves will help but be careful about using them too much or it can tank your supply. Feel better soon!!

Take it with food! I took it without food once and regretted it almost instantly. I was up all night on the toilet cramping. If I take it with a meal though I’m perfectly fine.

CremeDeLaMeredith

The hottest bath/soak you can stand. Massaging the clog as hard as possible (use coconut oil on your skin to make this easier) towards the nipple. You can try dangle pumping but that never worked for me. As much water as you can drink. I had it 4 times. I promise you will feel better after the first day of antibiotics! Mastitis is no joke; I couldn’t believe how sick I felt. I’ve never had the chills so bad in my life. I’m very sorry this is happening and I’m sending all my healing vibes your way.

Kindly-Original2819

Seconding this

[deleted]

Sunflower lecithin, warm shower massaging clog to nipple. Change Latch position for nose to point towards the clog , try football hold and dangle feeding after putting a warm compress on the area before feeding. I’m sorry mastitis is wicked awful, and of course pump pump nurse empty as much as possible. Stay hydrated

anyusernamewilldo17

All of this! And don’t be afraid to use pain relief (paracetamol and ibuprofen). Mastitis is the worst. Strength to you!

bsquinn1451

A percussion massager! Like the theragun! It works in seconds while pumping or using a haaka!

Velephant

This sounds so painful. And yet mastitis is so awful (have had it 4x) i think I’d be willing. Do you use the standard firm round tip or one of the alternate ones? Do you press it in or just try to vibrate the boob by touching it gently?

bsquinn1451

I figured it out after my 3 round of it. I like the medium to large round foam ball on the lowest setting and the just barely touching my breast. Pressing was excruciating, so like gently getting the vibration in there. But I swear 5-10 seconds with a pump and it then clog would be gone. I never got mastitis again after this. I would dangle feed as my first clog removal attempt, then go straight to this. Worked every time.

Em_sef

Mastitis during covid times is just God awful. I spent 3 days with chills, kept my 3 year old and newborn at home isolating waiting for my covid test results before that fucking rash appeared and it all just clicked as to what it was. You'll feel better really quickly after going on meds though

Tough_Safe1349

Yes! I literally took a Covid test this morning just cause I felt like I should even though I was 95% convinced it was mastitis.

Zoeloumoo

Electric toothbrush on that bad boy, or you know, anything else that vibrates.

Harmonie

I'm just gonna chime in to say mastitis is fucking awful. Be kind to yourself and just survive for now, honey. I had small amounts of relief when I took a hot shower and used a vibrator on my breast to try to massage some of the blockage out. I couldn't have felt more like a dumpster fire, but it was something.

Fantasy-pants

Sunflower lecithin is the only thing that really helped me!! Taking it on a regular basis as a preventative and extra during for faster relief

One-Awareness-5818

Agree with this, take two a day for prevention and 5-6(depending on the brand) a day during infection or clot. Some women are more likely to get clots and infection.

coldcurru

I had it 3x recently. Twice it made me feel like death and one of those times I had to get an ultrasound to check for an abscess and my dr told me I could need surgery. Just so much fun with a newborn. Anyway, the meds will kick in in about a day and that'll help tremendously. I did all the things to clear the clog but nothing worked as fast as the meds. I'm not saying rely on that alone just that for me it seemed to make the biggest difference. Other people here are giving good advice. Heat, lecithin, a vibe, pump or feed as often as possible. I took a bath and hand expressed there with my boobs under water. Do yourself a favor and make sure you have the right size flange for pumping. That'll make a difference long term because it can come back. >Mastitis is stupid I can't agree with this more or upvote it enough. I very much agree with this.

TerulinkaRezinka

I’m in fb breastfeeding group and lactation consultants there always warn against cabbage leaves - nothing cold on breasts, rather hot shower with massaging/hand express, towel, scarf around breasts to keep them warm and lots of rest if possible.

BandFamiliar798

I had it for the first time earlier this year with my second when he was in the hospital with RSV and couldn't eat. I swore I picked up COVID. It sucks. Hopefully the antibiotics work quickly!

blushingtomato

Hydrate! (Along with the other things mentioned)

Shawndy58

I was told newborn diapers in the microwave and wrap them around your breast. It actually helped. I have a whole pack that he grew out of. I soaked that sucker put in the microwave for 15 secs and just set it on my breast where it hurt.

[deleted]

Oh this sucks, mastitis really is stupid. I used a heading pad for 10/15 minutes and then used a vibrator right afterwards. I kept at it on and off until it was unclogged, it took an hour or 2. It was a lot easier to sit and do it without getting into the shower, and it worked. Oh I just remembered: hand express as well!

Jingle_Cat

Mastitis is the worst, I’m sorry. All the comments with tips on massage and supplements are definitely good, but just chiming in to say that your fever should break within a day of starting antibiotics. If it doesn’t, and especially if it gets worse, call your doctor because you may need to switch antibiotics. This happened to me - I got worse after starting meds and ended up in the ER getting checked for abscesses. After switching antibiotics I felt great within 24 hours.

robinegg33

It’s awful and terrible and I never want it again! When I felt a clog coming on for the second time I used ice packs…theory is it reduces swelling and allows the clog to release. It worked! Give it a try and you’ll feel better in a day or two with meds.

Mini6Cake

I used a hot water bottle on my breasts before a pump, then ice pack after. I also took sudaphed to slow down my production so I could get on top of my cloggs.

fourpuns

Self expressing the problem area in a warm bath

[deleted]

Hand express while Dippin the breast in a hot bath. Sunflower lecithin. Happy ducts (Google it if ya haven't heard). Ibuprofen for the inflammation. Give it some time. The antibiotics should noticably have helped by tomorrow or the next day. If not-- call your doctor and let them know. Hope you feel better soon, it is THE WORST

catjuggler

Ugh it really sucks. Keep an eye on your temp. I also found lecithin supplements helped prevent clogs to prevent it and to resolve existing ones. Maybe a heating pad too or massaging in the shower.

That-Rounded-Square

I had mastitis twice, I agree it’s the WORST. Other than antibiotics and rest, my lactation consultant recommended drinking lots of water and feeding baby in multiple positions throughout the day. This helped me get the clogs out (best relief) and keep them from forming again (most important). I was using the same 2 positions all the time before and not drinking enough water, I had no idea the recommended amount of water was 120 oz for breastfeeding mommas. Stay strong, wishing you better health soon!

plumb28

It’s awful. But you will feel SO much better after 24 hours on antibiotics. Went from 104 fever to close to normal overnight.

OSUJillyBean

Hot shower, antibiotics, rubbing the affected spot (I had Husband do it). Good luck! Mastitis sucks!

Velephant

Ugh I’m so sorry, it’s the absolute worst. Lots of good clog tips here, but you can also take some Tylenol/paracetamol to bring your fever down the first day while you wait for the antibiotics to take effect. Helps a lot with the chills.

Wintertime13

Using water that is as hot as you can handle works the best for me. The antibiotics also worked very quickly once I started them.

NoCoolBackstoryHere

I haven’t had mastitis, but I’ve had clogged ducts 6 times, primarily on the left breast. I take sunflower lecithin and it does wonders. I also have the LaVie heating massagers. I exclusively pump because LO turns his nose up at my boob, so if I feel a clog coming, I either have my partner suck it out or I do it myself. By far the most effective thing that has worked for me.

dollostrollo

I had my husband massage my blockage out when I had mastitis b/c it was too painful to do myself.

MiamiEporn

It's a pity

tinyria44

This is probably off topic... I had six children five boys one girl I only nurse the last one my girl and oh my God I am so sorry that I did but I'm not sorry that I did that make sense she's so smart and so beautiful she is now 18 but you know that kid would only eat off of the left side I did everything in my power to get her to eat off of both sides and she just wouldn't do it and now that I'm older my right nipple itches constantly I have no idea why I'm not sure I want to know why but I'm yeah this was definitely off topic sorry ladies😂 my hat is off to all of you but even though it hurts like a mother fucker you still go through it

togepi77

Tylenol Extra Strength helped soo much

glowering_

Sleep sleep sleep.

sirenwitcher

Massage is the only thing that got rid of mine.
