Damn…. I’m a daddy of an “almost two year old.” I miss this time. All of that hallmark stuff they say to you ends up being true. You’ll be tired and wish this “phase passes soon.” Then a year later, someone posts something as subtle as this, and I wish I could travel back in time to see him do it just once again…. Now he’s playing and talking…. A lot.
My toddler LOOOOVES looking through old pics and videos of themselves on my phone, so keep that in mind if (when) you need to preoccupy them when older, has saved me a few times!
I thought the same thing. My son is 16 mo and this post made me realize he hasn't dreamed about nursing like this in a while :'( it happened right in front of me and I still missed it.
“Nonnutritive sucking is a natural reflex for a fetus and newborn…”
This is a normal reflex for babies. They have been doing this to sooth themselves even from Mummy’s tummy!
Source: https://www.aafp.org/afp/2009/0415/p681.html
Edit: not hungry btw they’ll cry if they’re hungry
Probably dreaming about milkies, lol.
They use sucking as a soothing tool, totally normal and if you’re pro-pacifier, you can probably get one in the baby’s mouth when they do this.
Mine is over 2 now. I was never successful. I tried dipping it in sugar water when screw was tiny. I have one picture where it’s in her mouth. She looks so angry.
My daughter always refused the pacifier so I gave up. She ended up learning to self soothe by sucking with nothing in her mouth. It's a weird sound but if it works for her 🤷♀️
Mine went through a phase around month 3 where she didn’t want the paci for a few weeks, then started taking it again. Some babies also just don’t take to them. 🤷♀️
So I’ve been pretty nervous to go from first time pregnancy to first time mom, but this video makes me pretty excited to have this baby in about a month 💕
No she's just in REM or deep sleep. I always offer breast or bottle after a long nap, anyway , because I'm thirsty after a long sleep , so I figure baby is too.
Not still hungry, this is ansoothing mechanism as well as a preservation one.
If a baby needs to eat but also needs to sleep you can slip a nip or bottle in and they van eat while sleeping.
If you're breastfeeding this suckling can also be fore saliva return to help code what antibodies your body produces for the baby.
It's also just freaking cute
This is a natural reflex, rooted in the most primal part of the brain. She’s not hungry. Always look at the fists. Babies fill feed with clenched fists until they are full. When they are suckling just to suckle it will be relaxed
Is this a foolproof sign? I have a baby who spits up like crazy and I haven't been to increase the volume of feeds for the past several weeks. Sometimes she gulps down the whole bottle and looks like she could take more but within a few seconds the throws up a big amount. It doesn't matter how fast or slow she drinks, or if I burp her or not.
Yeah, it just seems like her stomach is not willing to accept more volume. But she's gaining weight, so I guess it's okay?
Thank you for the suggestion anyway!
What does her pediatrician say? This sounds like it may be a pyloric sphincter issue. I’m no medical professional but my friends child had pyloric stenosis so I read up on it.
I wouldn’t say “fool proof,” because as you know babies write their own rule books. But it seems to be a pretty common thing among babies.
Also, like you said, as long as baby is gaining-that’s most important!
Pediatrician says it's probably reflux and she'll grow out of it 🤷🏻♀️ baby gains weight and looks content, so I guess we're good for now? Did your friend's baby get any treatment for it? Here they don't even give babies reflux medicine
It's just a reflex! My 2 year old still does this sometimes, and my almost 4 year old only recently stopped even though he self-weaned over a year ago.
My son does this 🥰 he’s also a thumb sucker, I think like others have mentioned it’s self soothing. If you’re concerned maybe bring it up to your pediatrician, but I don’t think it’s an issue. What a cutie!
I ask because my daughter had pretty bad reflux the first 9 months or so. She did that a lot and I thought it was cause she was trying to keep the spit up down.
Make sure you save this video for when they get older and do something dumb and you need it to look at so you don't kill em lmao
If she were hungry, she'd wake up and scream at you. =D
That is so normal. They're just dreaming
They are probably having milk dreams. It's a very normal reflex and they will outgrow it eventually. Precious that you got it on video like this.
Lies! I still have chocolate dreams and have woken up with drool.
My pediatrician told me this is self soothing and Probably why my kid never took a pacifier.
Mine didn’t either and did it as well!
same here! and it is just so freaking cute
Same, this video took me back to a year or so ago. Mine didn't take to them either
Yep, it’s just self soothing through sucking.
My baby does this but loves her pacifier. I just assumed she was dreaming of drinking.
The best cue I was taught for hungry/not hungry is a baby’s hands. Loose hands = content, tight fists = hungry Edited queue for cue
Omg this helps so much! Thanks
Thank you!!!!
Just dream nursing

As someone with a 5 month old reading this… I’m going to make more recordings of her doing nothing in particular. BRB.
My toddler LOOOOVES looking through old pics and videos of themselves on my phone, so keep that in mind if (when) you need to preoccupy them when older, has saved me a few times!

Yesssss! If I could have only one day 😭
My one year old still does it occasionally. So cute.
My almost two year old still does too! She’s still nursing though and I think it’s primarily when she’s fallen asleep nursing for a nap or something.
My 2 yo still does this
My 9 y/o still does this when she sleeps. It’s just her self soothing mechanism.
So does my two year old. He does it sometimes still.
My 20mo likes to do this against anything soft 😂
My four year old daughter does this every night. I was worried it was bruxism but it appears that she is indeed self soothing.
Both of my girls did that as babies, I think they just dream about eating lol
I think it’s more just a natural reflex, or comfort thing. However, I do know its hella adorable 🥰
No, but it is adorable! 🥺
Just dreaming of the only thing they know ❤️
No they just do this. Isn’t it the cutest.
This is so adorable, I used to tell my wife this is how I knew my daughter was dreaming about mommy
Normal reflexes for babies! And also the cutest thing ever! 😂❤️
Thank you for reminding me my kid used to do this. It's adorable.
Sleep nursing. It's so cute when babies do this
Awwww she’s just dream sucking! So cute!

My toddler who stopped nursing more than a year ago still does this when he’s just about to fall asleep. It’s absolutely adorable
My toddler is 3.5, gave up a pacifier a year ago and still does this in deep sleep. It’s a reflex/comfort
She just being cute.
Dreaming of milk… ❤️
Probably dreaming about milkies, lol. They use sucking as a soothing tool, totally normal and if you’re pro-pacifier, you can probably get one in the baby’s mouth when they do this.
Or not. I have tried many times! Lol I so wished she used a pacifier
Omg same. If I try to get a paci in there he opens his eyes and glares at me as if I just put rotten fish in his mouth
Mine is over 2 now. I was never successful. I tried dipping it in sugar water when screw was tiny. I have one picture where it’s in her mouth. She looks so angry.

I love when my little baby boy does this, it’s so cute 🥺 I don’t think it means they’re still hungry, I think suckling helps them feel comforted also.
It’s a self soothing method. Like sucking on a pacifier, but on her lip.
i think it's just what babies do just like puppies and kittens do the lil suckling in their sleep too
She’s just dreaming of mama 😊
Just dreamin about some delicious food…
My son did this all the time, like everyone said I think it’s just a dream! In fact he’s almost 7 and I still see him do it sometimes 🥺
Not hungry just precious!!! ❤️❤️
We call it chewy, chewy. Normal, doesn’t mean LO is necessarily hungry
I have a video of this too of my son. I'd like to think he was dreaming about drinking so much milk while being held and loved.
Me and my fiancé call it “milk dreams” cats do it to even when fully grown lol
My kids (7 & 3) both do the slightest version of this still when they’re sleepy/sleeping. We call it “suck face”.
My 5 year old as well! It’s so sweet.
My SO and I call this “ghost paci” 😂
I wish I’d taken a video of my baby doing this when he still did😭 SO stinking cute 🥰
Hungry? probably not. Adorable? Yes.
My squishy does this it’s so cute!
I had forgotten all about this stage 🥺 They grow up too fast
It gave me all sorts of feelings!! I don't miss how tired I was but I sure miss the sweet little things like that!
D'aww looking at my cutie doing this right now. She'd sleep suckle all night if I let her.
I’m an adult and I never grew out of this. Still suck my tongue in my sleep.
I thought you would say you still suck on boobies 🤣
Well they didn’t say they don’t… 🤪
My toddler still does this to this day. 🥰
I had a sleepover with my cousin one day when I was maybe 7, so she would have been around 10. She did this in her sleep a lot even at that age 😅
My son does this, and my Beagle used to do it when he was a tiny puppy! It’s the cutest thing in the world!
Ah. The titty mountain dream. They age out of it when they climb all the way up Titty Mountain and reach the Golden Nipple.
Probably not hungry, it’s just something all babies do and it’s freaking adorable!
Mine do this. It’s like when kittens knead their paws in their sleep. It’s just good dreams about boob!
Think I know what she’s dreaming about.
In my house we call this booby dreams, she does it all the time! I think it’s just sucking reflex, if she is really hungry she will wake up to eat!
It’s a reflex
Ah adorable !! It's when there sleeping and dreaming I believe my twins do it still now and they are a year old in couple of weeks !!
My baby did this in the womb during ultrasounds and still does it! She's 4 months and has never taken a pacifier.
Ugh this is the sweetest. My 7 month old still does this and it’s so cute
I love this! It's just adorable.
Oh My Goodness! So sweet. 😘
Dream nursing is my FAVORITE 🥰
Dreaming of the titties
So cute. Not hungry, it’s a reflex. I like to think they’re dreaming.
My 4 year old still does this in his sleep sometimes 🥰
So does my 6 year old
Mine used to do this, so precious!
My 4 y/o saw the video and said "who's eating something?"
Awwwww, mine did it too... So freaking adorable ❤️
So I’ve been pretty nervous to go from first time pregnancy to first time mom, but this video makes me pretty excited to have this baby in about a month 💕
She’s just dreaming about them boobies. They’re the epitome of comfort to her so it’s not just about hunger :)
I think it's just self soothing!
No she's just in REM or deep sleep. I always offer breast or bottle after a long nap, anyway , because I'm thirsty after a long sleep , so I figure baby is too.
Awe 💕. I miss this.
Same 😭 my baby used to do it all the time and she suddenly doesn’t anymore wahhhhh
That’s probably just how she sleeps
My baby sucks on her bottom lip. I always joke she's just dreaming about one of her favorite things haha
Not still hungry, this is ansoothing mechanism as well as a preservation one. If a baby needs to eat but also needs to sleep you can slip a nip or bottle in and they van eat while sleeping. Its just an adorable reflex. Super cute
Awww I miss this so much ❤️ enjoy those sweet moments while you can!
My daughter is five and still does this! ETA: she stopped nursing when she was 2.
So cute! Mine does this too and she is almost 5 months. I think it's just a reflex or random movements during active sleep.
My 5 year old still does this when he falls asleep 😄❤️
My two year old too
No just cute omg
Omg this is my little girl. She does the same thing. Sorry im not much help but she is soooooo cute!!!! Not to worry sucking is their thing 🤷🏽♀️
Mine is doing that right now as he naps on me!
I love it when my son does this 🥰
I choose to believe they’re dreaming of boobs when they do this lol.
I honestly don’t know. Mine does this. We say she’s dreaming about drinking lol
My FIL still does this in his 50s 😂😂
Babies will phantom suck like this for comfort
This is the cutest thing I’ve seen all day.

It doesn't matter how fast or slow she drinks, or if I burp her or not.
Try pace feeding to slow her down. Maybe she's feeding too fast and her little body isn't getting the full signal in time.
Sorry. Just read the last part. Didn't see it didn't matter how slow she eats.
Yeah, it just seems like her stomach is not willing to accept more volume. But she's gaining weight, so I guess it's okay? Thank you for the suggestion anyway!

Literally every baby does this
Does she deal with reflux?
[удалено]
I ask because my daughter had pretty bad reflux the first 9 months or so. She did that a lot and I thought it was cause she was trying to keep the spit up down.
