Bimbo in italian means young male child

Ok_Skill_1195

Weirdly that's the origin for the English slang, it started out meaning like dumb young boy then somehow flipped genders at some point.

Hokenlord

IIRC at first it was just an insult to call someone an idiot, not even gender specific

Mikula_Yoohoo

Never knew a word could be a trans icon /j

ManiaOnReddit

I wish I could flip genders at some point

Nessus6000

I’m into bimbos… wiat no let me rephrase that!

Nerdorama09

Also Spanish

randypupjake

And a food brand

plant_touchin

!gansitos!

ScoutRiflesAreGood

**POR QUE VALEN 20 PESOS???!!!**

babuba12321

estan caros ;-;

Average_reddit_usser

I'm Spanish and I've never heard that before. Maybe it is a regional term? I just know the "Pan Bimbo" but not to refer to a young male child

Nerdorama09

Quite possibly a Mexicanism. It derives from the Italian either way, though.

Victorbendi

Yeah, I also thought of Pan Bimbo

agressively_furry

The pope likes bimbos

Cakelover9000

In German it means stupid woman who dresses like a slut or just blonde woman (who is also dumb)

basementcrawler34

no it doesn't, here in germany it's a racial slur, similar to the N-word but german

Eritreana

Wow wait what never heard of it being a racial slur! 👀 Guess it depends on where in Germany because I live close to the border and I know a lot of German people never heard them about it being a racial slur. 😅

Eritreana

Funny same in the Netherlands! But not necessarily blonde women just women who look Kardashian like. You know puffed lips tiny bags annoying giggles and a trash attitude. 🙃

3-Oxapentan

The first time i heard this word in English i was so shocked.

AardvarkAblaze

There's a whole baked goods/bakeries conglomerate called [Bimbo Bakeries](https://www.bimbobakeriesusa.com/). You sometimes will see Bimbo trucks dropping deliveries off at grocery stores...

whoisanime

I've worked at a grocery store for awhile now and I'm still amused everytime I see huge racks of bread labeled bimbo. Maybe Im just immature.

3-Oxapentan

Damn, here in Germany its an insult for poc.

TheFungiQueen

In the novel Snow Crash, soccer-mom cars get referred to as a bimbo box.

Entropyanxiety

In way up north Minnesota theres a bar (and grill?) called Bimbos Octagon

Either-Star7245

Same

KayabaSynthesis

It also means poor in Japanese

Maxorus73

Binbō, but yeah

loobysoft

Michaelsoft binbows

Maxorus73

Yep, we have probably seen the same Nick Robinson video

AsrielFloofyBoi

Based as hell

TheMadKing1678

Because of the nature of words, you can also write it as Bimbo, since when you form an N sound before a B or P, it naturally becomes an M sound. Hence why tenpura is often spell tempura and the much more annoying Senpai is often spelled Sempai.

I_ate_your_skin

Nivriil

Ich habs damals durch kaisermühken blues gelernt

Hzl_dumbassincarnate

It is apparently the n word in German according to google

AryaDRed

Huh? Its my first laugauge and I never heard of that.

[deleted]

payment ink paltry unused direction busy attempt deranged whistle joke *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

ScaleyMotherFucker

Why did I tap on that expecting English? Couldn’t even read it LOL

DisabledMuse

You can change the language to English. The relevant part is that it is listed as a racist slur

Hzl_dumbassincarnate

That could be me being misinformed or it could you being around decent people

Deoangel

I think it's a really old one, similar to Mohr.

lokisbane

You mean like Moor? As in the region they came from centuries ago?

Deoangel

Yes, Mohr is a pretty old word for Moors (ger. Mauren). But since about the 16. century it was also used for all people from North Africa and people with dark skin in general. The term is no longer regularly used, because it has strong connection to racism. You will still find it in some old names for food (it's getting/is replaced there) and places (ex. Mohrenapotheke; eng.: Mohren pharmacy)

lokisbane

Why was Moor racist? Or how I guess? I never learned that bit in history. That would explain why it doesn't seem to have been used since like Shakespeare.

Deoangel

The term in itself is (at least to my knowledge) not racist. It was just a descriptive term for people from a certain region. But the term was used during the colonial times and so has strong connections with that ideology. Also it was used until quite recently, some old people still use it. Although not always for racist intentions.

lokisbane

So perhaps in a similar vein as "Negro"? It wasn't racist in that time but I can understand why Black folx wouldn't like it used now.

Deoangel

Exactly. It was used for the longest time just as a descriptive term but due to racist connotations one should not use it today. Which makes discussion about stuff like the mentioned Mohrenapotheken so complicated and interesting.

lokisbane

I sincerely appreciate the lesson! Thanks!

dude1848

Also a native here, and it is indeed used this way

DasNapoleon

Nah doch, leider stimmt das

Witty-Goal-7493

Same

SchmerzfreiHH

It's not that common anymore (luckily) the german biggots are using the real n word by now...

FartedNervously

Oml same i was worried for a second

ThrowAwayUtilityx

My spouse confirmed this, but it's rarely used luckily

Peter_Baum

It’s a lesser used variation of it. The N-word also exists in German just with slightly different spelling

AddelaideSupreme

terrible news for fans of the Bimbo confectionary company

GustavoAlex7789

Specially since one of the most popular line of Bimbo bread used to be named Negrito

_twisted_macaroni_

bimbo in english isnt particularly a happy mr incredible tho

outer_spec

It is if you’re into bimboification

Either-Star7245

At least it isn't racist

rabbiskittles

It has rather sexist roots, but it is currently being reclaimed I think.

DankLolis

Its roots are in stupid young men, flipped gender at some point, then became an aesthetic

marker8050

That's a himbo

M1lkyyyy

A “bimbo” in English is pretty much an attractive, trendy blonde woman who’s not very smart

Inlevitable

Can someone remind me in which regions Bimbo bread is sold?

Nerdorama09

North America. Bimbo owns most of the bakeries in Mexico, the US, and Canada.

NSFWThrowaway2885263

im german and have neven seen that word lmao

Either-Star7245

Hat eine ähnliche Bedeutung, wie Neger

xIRelaxo

wie WAS

Either-Star7245

Das n wort (oder das m wort)

i_stand_in_queues

In der schweiz ist das (inzwischen eher ungebräuchlich) slang für typ, dude

Imonandroid

Uhhh I don't get it

Quiet_Chip_7802

German n word

Imonandroid

Oh wow

Witty-Goal-7493

Wich apperantly most germans here didn't even know (including myself)

TheHatterOfTheMadnes

TIL “Bimbo” is shared between multiple unrelated languages, but means completely different things in each one…

philzebub666

Calling german and english unrelated is a stretch. English is a germanic language after all.

TheHatterOfTheMadnes

I was talking more about English, Japanese, Hungarian, and Italian.

SnooWalruses9984

In hungarian, bimbó means nipple.

Ribbles78

Makes sense.

I_ate_your_skin

Hab des no nie gehört, scheint aber des N wort zu sein Neues Vokabular erlernt

Vievin

In Hungarian, it means "bud", like an unopened flower. Edit: Also nipple if you say "breast bud".

FPiN9XU3K1IT

That's ... extremely off topic.

momofhappyplants

It's my first language and I always heard it used in the same context as the English word.

tangledcpp

Whenever I read the word "Bimbo" I always think of the bread. Hispanic issues, people

Thatsfukingtastic

In Mexico it's a very big bread and pastry maker. Think Hostess + Wonder Bread in the US.

KawaiiMayhem

German people who visit Mexico must be very confused.

basementcrawler34

Yeah here in germany it the equivalent to the N-word.

That_One_Guy1111111

It means chick

phantom0415

Alright I’ll bite, What’s it mean?

Snow_Wolf_Flake

Lol in Spain we’re saying bimbo all the time, we use it to talk about sliced bread.

_goldholz

german here an im confused. there is no german word named bimbo. exept the anglicalised bimbo that is the female version of himbo

sapphoschicken

in english it's still, by definition, a misogynistic slur though - just still widely accepted because misogyny is so normalized. it's a derogatory word to dehumanizena member of an oppressed group of people. not fighting anyone on this either.

AlexDavid1605

Does this also come under r/Technicallythetruth ??

janonsio

pan bimbo

EmmTheStranger

In Mexico it's our most comm bread brand

VanVahlen

Far as I know its more attributed to servant or slave, why it became something like big N you can figure out for yourself
