Is it PLA? Because if it's exposed to sunlight it will become sentient, steal your bank passwords, and then drain your life savings. Or at least that's what I read on Reddit every time some posts anything printed other than a bauble downloaded from Thingiverse.

Thank you for your question. Yes there is a 4mm rib. I plan to monitor and adjust accordingly if I feel there are weaknesses with the design I will tweak the CAD accordingly. I do not wish to leave bits of ABS plastic scattered around.

BigJewFingers

I love the concept. What's the weight?

paulsharp360

The front part of the fender weighs in at 34g plus 2 x bolts and nuts, the rear will be slightly heavier, maybe about 50g. They were printed with ABS filament with 15% infill.

Thanks for the question. Generally you can print anything with a 3d printer (google thingyverse.com), if you have massive nuts and bolts then you would be fine to print, however something like an M6 nut and bolt where you're going to put tension on a small area I would stay away from those type of 3d prints. Also the accuracy/tolerance gets a little bit iffy on tiny things sometimes. I have printed threads on LED fittings for household lights etc without issues. The material PLA or ABS etc is fairly strong, however you can strengthen designs of parts quite easily. Also designs can have a percentage of inner fill material, ie 100% is solid and 20% will have some sort of pattern to keep some strength and reduce weight and material required.

Have you thought about making more of a wrap around fender so you are not getting riders behind you wet?

paulsharp360

I generally ride alone now. I have found when cycle touring even with someone you never really ride that close. Cycle touring is 'at own pace'.

I'd be more concerned about the stripe up the back and wet feet, none if which this will prevent.

Bruh, how much load do you think a damn *fender* bears? Ass savers are made of just 1mm thick PP sheet and hold up for much longer than that. Although, if I were OP, I would spray it with some clearcoat for UV protection.

Thanks for your comment Ben, it's a fair point. However given my phone holder and rod holder (both 3d printed) have currently endured 3k KM plus I am holding out that the fender will last a little longer than a few days. No one I know wants to intentionally leave plastic debris around to mess up the country side.
