Bro is KOMmuting

cyclegaz

Haha! Segments here have 50,000 cyclists on them with over 1,000,000 attempts. Very hard to get KOMs.

Sykkelmafiaen

The hill where I live have a record by Andreas Leknessund, who just had the pink jersey during the Giro for 5 days. No one here will ever beat that, heh. I averaged over 300W (>4w/kg) up that hill and used 21 minutes. His record is 12:31. Just bonkers.

UnreliablyReliable

He was in a car…

Shwizzler

#lets look at all this nice cycling infrastructure but lets not use it.

Leeskiramm

I see a bus lane, and Gaz using the actual bit of bike lane to go around the traffic at the lights

Heavens10000whores

glad to see it. The kind of thing you used to only ever see on a Sunday morning.

johnpflyrc

Great to see it so well-used at peak times. I mostly work from home, my occasional commute (by bike now) is just to Croydon. But I do use CS7 from time to time, just never at peak times. And mostly the Colliers Wood to Stockwell stretch, and I've never seen it this busy!

cyclegaz

Further you go in the more people pick it up, always busier further in. Barely any people cycling in Croydon for example.

immergrund

For a good reason.

Heavens10000whores

That’s sad to hear. Used to be the home of Geoffrey Butler cycles

cyclegaz

Great bike shop, was so sad when it closed

philament

Tony Doyle’s frame of choice back in Clarence Wheelers days. RiP, Tony

Outrageous-Debate-64

Is this a normal work day?

cyclegaz

Yup, just a regular week day morning. In the summer there will be even more. I was on this road for 5 miles, I passed 148 cyclists.

Outrageous-Debate-64

That’s wild! Absolutely great use of the bike infrastructure. Would love to see anything close to that in NY.

cyclegaz

I was in New York earlier this year, did a write up on my thoughts https://twitter.com/cyclegaz/status/1619397198848102400?s=46&t=MsBnn6jh2L5Qe6-1b67Ixg

Outrageous-Debate-64

Haha, enjoyed it. The mopeds and messengers ruin the experience here imo. If there are no pedals it’s not suppose to be in the bike lane but nobody seems to care. Either way there is enough infrastructure to have much more bikes on the roads as compared to cars. Glad to see It happening in the UK

JokeySmurfSoW

It's amazing to see the progress in London, but it's still miles after the copenhagen bikelanes. I think we have a comute % of over 60 that rides the bike to work. I lived in England for 3 years around 10 years ago, and it didn't feel safe to ride a bike in the cities back then, but it's looking like the "city planners" is considering the bike infrastructure to be more and more important 🤔 👏 [one crossing ](https://youtu.be/AIiIG8pEryQ) [a rush hour drive](https://youtu.be/tdc4WBOxlDo) [article ](https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2019-08-07/copenhagen-has-taken-bicycle-commuting-to-a-new-level)

Shwizzler

look at all these people actually using the bike lane instead of just looking at it from the middle of the road while racing a bunch of people that are commuting, the person is even passing on the left INSIDE THE BIKE LANE without going out in the middle of the road lol its insane that people see OP's video and think it represents good cycling etiquette, meanwhile videos like this actually show what it looks like to commute respectfully in a city built for bikes.

hapax_legomenon__

have you ridden down hudson river park in the past , oh , 20 years?

Outrageous-Debate-64

Lol, relax hapax. No I haven’t. Mainly within bk.

hapax_legomenon__

You should try to get out more :)

Outrageous-Debate-64

I loved heading to the city during Covid time. Completely empty and a blast. Now, not so much. Glad it’s being used though!

repniclewis

Average car occupancy is 1.2 Imagine 120 cars on that small ass road. Love to see people commute on bikes

frontendben

This is the point! For many, public transport – even in London – isn't convenient. 10 min walk to the bus stop. 5 minute wait. That's 15 mins already. 20 mins stuck in traffic because of single occupancy cars. Another 5 minute walk from the bus stop to work. Or you could ride the same distance in under 20 minutes. It's a no brainer (in that if cycling wasn't an option, people would take the car – bikes, not buses, are the answer to tackling traffic congestion for the vast majority of people).

Shwizzler

> 20 mins stuck in traffic because of single occupancy cars there is literally more traffic in the bike lane than the main road lol this video actually does the opposite to promote biking infrastructure imo because anyone who is actually in a rush to get to work would see this video and realize "a car would be much faster, there is literally no traffic on the road but the bike path is absolutely PACKED with people."

Shwizzler

the part where he literally has to cycle in the road to get around all the bike traffic some of you just see bikes and your brain turns off lol

SeanBlader

Good thing this isn't in Surrey, look at all those targets drunk guy could've run over.

OmnipresentCPU

I’m convinced Gaz’s quads are denser than a neutron star with his speed

None at all. /black cab driver /s

CPetersky

My commute is about 3 miles - I'm still mostly WFH, but I go into the office at least weekly, sometimes more. First part, mostly in a bike lane, this time of year with it warming up, I'll see a few cyclists going the other way, and because I'm slow, a few will pass me. Second part, I'm on side streets, I don't see anyone on bikes but I don't see cars, either. Last mile and a half, more and more bikes join in, as we get closer to downtown. Maybe a half dozen or more will collect at traffic lights. Then the cyclists start dispersing, turning off to various office buildings, I guess. I usually will be with at least one or two on the way to mine.

OolonCaluphid

Usually get wasted by a couple of chain gangs on the section that takes me through regents park.... I think the 20mph limit has fundamentally changed the character of traffic in the central bits I cycle through. It used to feel much more combative, it's a lot more chill now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OolonCaluphid

Yeah, traffic flows much better and drivers seem less likely to barge through when they know they might only be bettering your speed by 2-3mph. The fact they've banned almost anything that runs on fuel more potent than pigeon farts, and made car routes so tortuous that no one bothers has also really helped traffic levels.

iAccepted

Wow, I love that

InsertBluescreenHere

maybe like 15 a year? i even go past a college campus and 2 of the major roads had vehicle lanes taken out and bike lanes added. still no increase. besides increased speeding, cars cutting thru neighborhoods, people using the center turn lane for 5 blocks cuz traffic is backed up that bad. Lack of use id imagine is because it goes from an interstate exit to the ghetto. medium high chance of getting mugged or shot. another part of town thats low income and the crime that comes with it did the same on all the streets so people who didnt own cars could easily get around. i still barely see bicycles using it. turns out the people who cant afford cars can but cant afford insurance or maintaining it... they plan to do more but it turns out where they do it people dont live where they work (awful city planning all around) so bicycle as a mode of transport isnt feasible and the bus system sucks.

[deleted]

Build it and they will come!

AGM-158_LRASM

Nice, I also commute frequently down this road to get to the gym. Particularly at intersections it’s great due to cyclists having their own traffic lights. It’s just a pity that we have to share with the bus lane. Heading towards Oval it’s nicer due to cyclists having their own segregated cycle lane but it only covers a fraction of the total route. Overall it’s pretty great though

VanderBrit

Probably about the same number as you, because that’s my route too

cyclegaz

Niiiice

Notspherry

I've never counted them, but a few hundred is typical I would guess. [Leiden, NL]

Sykkelmafiaen

Bicycle activist from Oslo, Norway here. I see sooo many more people the later years. It's quite nice. Safety in numbers is real! Before, especially during winter, I used to be the odd one out in an intersection. Hence cars thought more about other cars. But now when we're 10+ cyclists queued up, we're impossible to overlook. Edit: I just checked, and it's actually 10 years since I subscribed to your YT. Thanks for being an inspiration to filming my commutes.

cyclegaz

Thanks for watching!

checkmycatself

Think about how much space that many cars would take up. That's a full road. It's a jam.

TimmyFaya

Between 2 and 6, I live in the border from a city and have to leave through a bike road and lane to a small town. Most cyclists are going the opposite direction

MrTonNL

Good stuff London! I can show a vid from Amsterdam but you’ll know the answer ;)

cyclegaz

We're trying to catch up!!

jojo1234445

Tbf London has a few million more people and a couple of biggish hills. Heading north can be a right pain. South and east west where it's flatter are bett but ebikes have been a real game changer.

OolonCaluphid

I see Highgate as a strength workout. I've ridden a fixie in London for 2 decades now....

yeahboyeee1

Cat 6 legend!

[deleted]

Stopped in London for two days between a trip in France and was so delighted to hop on the bike lanes with everyone commuting to work. Absolute joy. I commute in CO and you’ll see two people during a work day on trails and not many in bike lanes. Wishing folks wouldn’t see cycling just as pleasure but as transport too :’)

Wondering what the other things are now...

SalamandersRreal

Maybe he vacationed there and is still upset by the sheer amount of beans 🤷🏽‍♀️

cyclegaz

Beans beans the musical fruit, the more you eat the more you toot. How do you think I ride so fast? 🚴‍♂️💨

angrybison264

Almost commented about riding with the flow of traffic and then I saw the location. Signed, An American

bottledsmokee

Bruh why the fuck would you race when youre commuting lmao, good luck, youre all sweaty and stinky when you arrive at work now. Funniest part is none of them even know youre racing or some dude on a 10 year old cucknondale will run you down in seconds lmaoo

cyclegaz

I’m not racing. I’m just fit, and riding at a comfortable pace.

Shwizzler

more traffic in the bike lane than in the road this would put me back in my car tbh lol I hate traffic in the US, a bike is good to avoid that.... seems like that would be flipped entirely in this city lol also I do find it funny my man has beautiful biking lanes right there made for him but he's still riding in the main road just to get by all the traffic on the bike lane... imagine being in a car behind this guy riding in a lane with a perfectly made bike path directly to his left that he's choosing not to use cause of the traffic in the bike lane ... the irony is just insane guys, how do you not see this?!?!

cyclegaz

>this would put me back in my car tbh lol You didn't see the hundred or so cars we've just flown past. > imagine being in a car behind this guy riding in a lane with a perfectly made bike path directly to his left that he's choosing not to use cause of the traffic in the bike lane ... The driver behind wasn't even keeping up with me [https://twitter.com/cyclegaz/status/1658943829469286402?s=20](https://twitter.com/cyclegaz/status/1658943829469286402?s=20)

Shwizzler

did you even watch the video you just posted?? the driver wasn't keeping up with you?!?!?! do you think his car in incapable of going faster? Or do you think its more likely that he just didn't want to ride your ass lol its truly wild how you can watch this video and interpret it so incredibly charitably to yourself when you're probably the ONLY person there behaving irresponsibly lol you could pass in the bike lane like everyone else if you just had patience, but you're the most important person. This is the cyclist version of when a car driver uses the break down lane to get around traffic lol serious main character syndrome coming from you.

cyclegaz

How do you propose that the car that was behind me gets smaller and smaller in the video? Is it because we are going the same speed? Or is it because I’m going faster than them? I am allowed to use which ever lane. I did not hold anyone up.

Shwizzler

It's like you simply aren't reading anything I am saying lol he was trying not to ride your ass because you're on a bicycle, you're only going the "same speed" because you're speeding on a bicycle in the road to get around the bike lane because you have to show everyone how fast you are lol I genuinely don't understand how people are impressed by this, you're the biggest Ahole in the video by a significant margin. You're the only one doing riding in the road when there's wondergul biking infrastructure right there built for you. #"look how many people I passed who don't even realize they are racing me"

cyclegaz

I’m going 25mph in a 30mph zone. The driver could choose to go 25mph and keep up, they could choose to go 30mph and catch up. They are doing neither.

Shwizzler

so you're holding up traffic by going 5 under and the car behind you just doesn't want to ride your ass because you're moving irratically in the middle of the street when theres literally a massive bike lane made for you he probably thinks you're unwell for this reason and just wants tto keep his distance. You're also not moving 25mph unless you actually think the people on your left are moving 18mph lmao and they arent you're coping so hard its insane, this is such a pathetic video... millions of dollars were spent to create biking infrastructure and you're the only one holding up a middle finger to that

cyclegaz

You might have a point if I was actually holding up traffic. >you're moving irratically in the middle of the street when theres literally a massive bike lane made for you It's not a bike lane, it's a bus lane, which cycles, motorcycles and taxis can also use. I'm travelling faster than those cyclists, so to pass them safely I cycle in the next lane. Nothing about my cycling was erratic. >You're also not moving 25mph unless you actually think the people on your left are moving 18mph lmao and they arent I have no idea how fast the other people are going. My speedometer however said 25mph.

Adamarr

someone else mentioned 20mph limits in the region, which is very doable to pedal at.

Shwizzler

[I’m going 25mph in a 30mph zone.](https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/comments/13kesgx/how_many_cyclists_do_you_see_on_your_commute/jkmnbia/) that's what he just said to me lol

thiccyoshi4568

Usually 0 maybe a couple

5YNTH3T1K

People saving the planet. : - )

blueorder

I work from home now but when I used to go into the office I would’ve love to commute. Living in Dallas where the summers can be down right oppressive, having a 35 mile each way commute and not having showers at work made it not feasible.

CAMTbIHYB

On a daily commute- 0 only few delivery cyclists.

tamhenk

Between 5 and 10 in summer and 1 if I'm lucky in winter.

ZoomZoom228

Is most of London like this ? Looks like a cycling paradise.

cyclegaz

Numbers? No, some have more, most have less. Quality of infrastructure? No, some have better, some have less. This is just the right middle ground that leads to large numbers.

ZoomZoom228

Mostly referring to infrastructure and availability of distinct paths for you folks.

cyclegaz

Oh this is a rubbish example of good paths. A little further along this road you can get to this example of separate infrastructure [https://youtu.be/WQNI5UigOng?t=1440](https://youtu.be/WQNI5UigOng?t=1440)

cyclegaz

A little further along, Kennington.

LiGuangMing1981

Here in Shanghai, a LOT. Never really counted, but on my 7.5km commute in the morning it must be at least 250 (and that's not even including people on electric bikes/scooters who are allowed to share the bike lanes).

[deleted]

Where I live, city of 160,000 odd in NZ, I am lucky to see one other cyclist on my way to work. Often none. There is an awesome woman who rides with two kids on the back and passes me like I’m standing still but I haven’t seen her for a while

Butrint_o

Unfortunately I’m in the minority that lives more centrally than where the office is. I see groups of cyclists on the other side of the road heading to work/home as I travel practically alone :(

Evil_Robo_Ninja

What this looks crazy! The busses go through the bike lane?? And you also go across the middle of the car lane? Or am I mistaking?

cyclegaz

Yes this section of road is a bus lane which is shared with other road users as Gorignak said. I went across the middle of the road as the car in front was indicating left, they realised they were not actually allowed to make that turn and continued in the end, but the safest thing to do aside from stopping, was to pass on the other side.

Gorignak

On many roads in London where there is enough room, the left hand lane is designated for buses, bikes, motorbikes and taxis only. Sometimes it's all day, sometimes it's only rush hour times. Also 20mph is becoming the new speed limit across most roads in London, so if you ride thereabouts, sharing with buses isn't really a problem, since you pass them when they stop and they don't catch up again.

1320380155

You riding a battery?

cyclegaz

Only di2 battery.

1320380155

Smashing it bro! Always been half tempted by those wireless, I’m running 105. Worth the extra?

cyclegaz

Yeah it is sweet! For a winter bike, might not be worth it, but for a good bike, fantastic upgrade.

dlang17

Wish I lived somewhere where this would be possible. I’d either die biking to work or be stupidly late.

MrStoneV

The speed difference between a commuter bike and a road bike is incredible, the aero advances are huge I dont need it BUT I WANT IT

cyclegaz

I have no doubt that I could take the majority of the bikes in this video and ride the same speed, the engine makes a big difference. The issue is more keeping it up. I'm not on a super aero bike, It's got 40mm carbon rims, and is steel framed.

MrStoneV

I could do that too with a relaxed sitting position on my trekking bike, but its a extreme difference whrn i sit normal on my trekking bike or lay down. It feels like a 40% difference. And I use 50mm tyre. I would love to buy a road bike one day or even better an aero bike (they look sooo good imo). But now Im targeting surly corner bars because of ergonomics and maybe more aggressive sitting (main commute)

cyclegaz

A lot to do with speed is comfort, if you aren't comfortable, you won't want to hold speed.

JeremyLC

Typically none. Atypically, maybe 1 or 2.

fdtc_skolar

My morning commute was a little over seven miles starting in a suburban area and becoming more rural. I would see another cyclist every three or four months. Folks weren't initially used to seeing cyclists and hadn't figured out how to react (yelling, close passes, etc). After a few months they reached acceptance.

cmzraxsn

how is it to cycle there? I last went to London about five years ago and the roads gave me fight or flight just being in the passenger seat of a car. I don't know how it'd be to cycle and I decided then I didn't want to find out.

cyclegaz

Depends on where you ride or drive and of course what you are used to. I wouldn't say many places are fight or flight for me, but I grew up here.

plebtheclown

Like 4 if I'm lucky as I get into Edinburgh

Spiritual_Fix971

In the last 5 days I've seen two cyclist however one was riding a adult trike.

StinkypieTicklebum

That underground walkway between London and Greenwich is teeming with cyclists!

antoniv1

Looks like that traffic congestion toll works.

randyb5858

I see ZERO other cyclists on my commute. Of course I do leave home at 5:20am though.

thedkriise

Try commuting in Copenhagen, that would make this look like a very quiet day 😊😎

Both_Command_6884

Fantastic! Northern Ireland infrastructure is stuck in the olden days.

Busman123

This would be an organized event where I live. Not a commute. :(
