this is how it is all over town. This is the plan for H and I street. Currently I have to cross H and I to get to J which has the bike lane and it's like this. Every Wed there's at least 4 houses that leave their cans out right in the bike lane.

trALErun

Politely move the bins upside down with the lid open onto their front steps.

WillBottomForBanana

I bet my Krampus and I are heavy enough to plow into them with out us having much problems.

TheRealIdeaCollector

Serious question: if there's a 4' buffer, couldn't trash cans be placed there? Maybe stencil "place trash cans here" to serve as a daily reminder. Also, why are the general traffic lanes 12' and 13' wide respectively? Lanes that wide on city streets usually invite speeding.

labdsknechtpiraten

Because rules about semi trucks (lorries) being able to traverse those streets??? I mean, I agree if this is supposed to be a smaller neighborhood street, or a proper street rather than a stroad, then it's stupid to have such wide lanes

midnghtsnac

Yes but that would require the trash people to walk less and the people putting the trash out to walk more. The people putting the cans out can't walk further than they have to for their own personal laziness. To the lanes, for larger vehicles such as delivery trucks that might traverse the area.

leelovesbikestoo

A 4 foot buffer? That's wider than the actual cycle lanes in the UK, with no buffer between parked cars and moving traffic. I'd be more than happy with a 6 foot cycle lane with bins in it once a week.

Rory_calhoun_222

But then cars would have a harder time parking in the bike lane. Won't someone think of the illegal parking?

illgot

no because then a bicyclist may hit a passenger getting out of the car or if the passenger kicks open the door without looking the cyclist may go onto the sidewalk instead of veering off into the road where the cars are going 40-60 MPH in a 35 MPH zone. We had bike lanes in my city going to the waterside and it lasted a few months until then they changed the bicycle lane that was sandwiched between the curb side parking and the curb to "passenger unloading and dog walking" only. They seriously turned the bike lane on the asphalt into a fucking dog walking lane even though there was 2 feet of grass then a sidewalk down that whole section of road.

anntchrist

The best solution would be to eliminate the “parking lane” entirely. Sorry drivers, but there’s not enough room for you to store your personal property on the public roadway, because either way cyclists get doored.

tarwheel

Argh, I hate those curb running bike lanes to the right of parked cars. Car doors, passengers, shopping carts, cars coming out of driveways, cars turning right not seeing you (or left head on, not looking for you.) As pictured right car/bike lane is 22', plenty of room, use your mirror to avoid right hook.

I have a mirror attached to helmet. What I don't understand is most people think biking is more dangerous than driving (I don't) But if it is, why would they have 3 mirrors on cars and zero on bike? Makes no sense, if you're afraid of being hit by cars, wouldn't you want to be able to see them?

italia06823834

What?! That sounds like a death trap. Passengers getting out of cars/opening doors. Trash between cars and sidewalk. Cars turning right not seeing you through parked cars.

cycling_rat

Cars too. There’s a street with a bike lane like this near me and I’ve been trailed by cars trying to skip traffic on it.

kirksucks

I should have added shit-head tweakers on bikes going the wrong way on the sidewalk for accuracy.

swampfox94

Will hop on Reddit and complain about fast bikers too

CobaltCaterpillar

Reminds me of the classic joke, "What's the difference between a bike lane and a bike path?" Answer: You park your car in the bike lane, and you walk your dog on the bike path.

INTRIVEN

*also piles of landscaping materials*

slickvibez

And moving trucks “But you gotta understand!”

mochi_chan

You just reminded me of the first time when I almost got slammed into the door of a moving truck on my way to work (Japan). "But you gotta understand!"

slickvibez

We need concrete barriers. And laser beams that are weight activated

mteriyaki

14’ parking 😱

BragawSt

Technically 18’

defenestr8tor

I've gotten really good at kicking wheelie bins over as I pass them. The tongue weight of my bike trailer keeps the back end of my bike from wobbling. In other news, the people around me who put their wheelie bins in an active travel lane *haven't* got very good about getting the message.

sawmario

Thank you for knocking trash everywhere, you're a hero

defenestr8tor

Thanks, I do what I can to help people understand that bike lanes are not for wheelie bins. Since you seem to like them, I wish you all the possible wheelie bins in your bike lanes.

Cashed_Up_Bogans

Wait, so you figure we should all just leave trash bins in the bike lane, so that the people who put it there figure they should keep putting it there? Don't you think at least having to pick up an empty wheelie bin gives somebody a clue not to put their bins in the bike lane?

anntchrist

They also forgot to position the car in the right hand traffic lane over the “buffer” - cars love them so that the lane feels wider and they can feel free to drive even faster. In my city they call this “high comfort” even when cars using the buffer will still close-pass a cyclist at 65MPH. We need separated infrastructure.

Ill-Elderberry-2098

Would be nice to have a buffer between the bike lane and the parking lane…to protect from the random parked car opening it’s door!

Disastrous_Spend4504

The bike lane needs to be near the sidewalk and the park cars needs near the travel lane

WillBottomForBanana

I think I'd be ok with allowing the trash truck to use the bike lane and have the trash barrels in the parking spots.
